A lot of residential pool techs learn water chemistry the hard way: a few rules of thumb, a few opinions from the internet, and a lot of costly guessing when something won't clear up. We wanted to change that conversation, so we brought Terry Arko back on to share real news about a new training rollout that preserves Bob Lowry's legacy while making it easier for today's pool service pros to actually use.We dig into why Bob Lowry's Pool Chemistry Training Institute (PCTI) mattered so much for the backyard pool professional, especially in a world where CPO certification is aimed at commercial operations. Terry explains how HASA took on the responsibility of maintaining and expanding that residential pool care education, and how the growth of on-demand learning (including the influence of Orenda's education approach) helped shape the new direction. The goal is simple: practical pool chemistry training that's clear, relatable, and built for what you see on route. Then we get into the big update: HASA is filming 14 short training videos based on Bob's residential material, followed by a quiz and a certification. We also talk about the specific concepts that make this training worth your time, including cyanuric acid (CYA) and chlorine effectiveness, water balance and LSI for residential pools, the importance of free chlorine over combined chlorine, and how understanding buffering and source water can help you save chemicals while keeping pools more stable. If you want smarter, simpler pool chemistry that you can apply immediately, listen through and keep an eye out for the video series dropping on the HASA site. Subscribe, share this with a tech who needs it, and leave a review so more pool pros can find the training they've been missing. We share breaking news on a new HASA-hosted training series that brings Bob Lowry's residential pool chemistry teachings back in a modern format. We also talk through why practical, poolside chemistry education matters and how techs can access certification-style learning again. • the training gap between residential pool service and commercial certification paths • Bob Lowry's teaching style and why it resonates with backyard pool pros • how HASA and Orenda help expand access to pool chemistry education • why the condensed two-hour format works better for many techs • what to expect from the 14 short videos, quiz, and certification • the downside of overly theoretical instruction and the value of usable concepts • key chemistry topics like CYA, free chlorine, combined chlorine, LSI, source water, and buffering Join the pool guy coaching program. In early 2020, as headlines around the world warned of a fast-spreading new virus, Sierra Leone watched with a mixture of concern and determination. The country had not forgotten the devastating Ebola outbreak of 2014 to 2015, which had exposed painful weaknesses in disease detection, surveillance, and emergency response. That experience left deep scars, but it also sparked reform. When COVID-19 began its global sweep, Sierra Leone faced the crisis with a stronger foundation than many might have expected.

A surgeon hurls a scalpel across theatre. It clatters off the wall. Nobody looks up. Twenty minutes later he's in the tearoom offering everyone a biscuit, and someone shrugs: "That's just him when he's stressed."If you've worked in veterinary practice for any length of time, you've got your own version of that story - maybe a bit less dramatic, but still things that completely destroy psychological safety. This episode is about that stuff, and the new psychosocial safety laws now rolling out across Australia that say plainly: no, actually, that's not acceptable. To make sense of what that looks like on a normal Tuesday in a normal practice, you'll hear from psychologist Rhonda Andrews, who works across high-pressure industries - emergency departments, the courts, and the veterinary profession - and who has spent years watching them all wrestle with the same problem: people breaking. This conversation is not about “just be more resilient”, but about systems. Rhonda makes a genuinely good-news case that these laws aren't more bureaucracy to dread - they're the push our profession has needed all along. You'll hear Why the things you've always filed under "just part the job" might now legally count as a psychological workplace injury - with consequences attachedThe myth spreading fastest right now - that bosses can no longer have an honest performance conversation - and why that's flatly wrong What the new psychosocial safety laws actually require of you as a practice ownerWhy this a team problem, not just something for management to sort outWhy "workload" is almost never the real problem - and the thing breaking your team underneath it that owners consistently missThe one shift available to everyone in the building - whatever their title - that changes culture without a single policy changeA note: this is the second in a small psych-safety miniseries. If you haven't heard Episode 158 with Dr Rebecca Faris on the AVA Thrive programme, start there for the bigger picture.Resources:Barrington Centre - Rhonda's psychosocial safety seminars (two online sessions, plus an in-person Melbourne day) and the Vet ECM training programmes for owners, leaders, and new supervisors: barringtoncentre.comFor show notes, clinical content and the newsletter head to thevetvault.com, and come find your people at a Vets On Tour conference - email me at info@thevetvault.com to find out about our new-grad 50% discount for Wānaka inAugust.Topics and time stamps04:52 Rising Mental Health Claims08:41 Mythbusting Owners Fears10:37 Defining Psychological Safety12:37 Vets Staying in Bad Jobs14:28 Sponsor Break Vets On Tour16:03 Systems vs Individual Responsibility19:35 Burnout Stats and Human Cost21:17 Who Can Influence Culture?22:46 Is Vet Work Uniquely Hard?24:05 Human Sector Parallels29:15 Business Model Reality Check30:18 ROI of Retention32:20 Psychosocial Safety Laws37:34 Workload and Rostering Fixes42:44 Leadership and Being Heard45:27 From Blame to Pathways50:27 Training Programs and Teams52:58 Myth Busting Performance Reviews54:27 Final Takeaways
What sets the general surgery training program at Brown University apart? In the final installment of our three-part series, we sit down with Residency Program Director Dr. Thomas Miner to break down the clinical, academic, and cultural blueprint of the program. In today's episode, Dr. Miner explains how Brown's unique position as the only major academic medical center in Rhode Island gives residents massive case volumes—graduating with around 1,400 cases—and unparalleled, one-on-one operating time without competing with fellows. We also dive into the program's unique global health electives in Kenya and the Virgin Islands , a research environment that boasts more projects than residents , and how Brown defines professional wellness as a baseline culture rather than just a checklist of perks. If you want to know what it truly means to be a "Brown Surgeon," this episode is a must-listen.

In this episode of the Personal Injury Marketing Minute, host Lindsay Busfield welcomes Eric Sanchez and Stacie Monahan from Maestro Strategic Partners to discuss the evolving landscape of law firm operations and the integration of AI technology. Eric and Stacie share insights from their extensive experience in optimizing law firm processes and their involvement with PILMMA’s mastermind groups. They delve into the importance of balancing people, processes, and technology, emphasizing the role of AI in enhancing, rather than replacing, human capabilities. The conversation covers the challenges and opportunities presented by new technologies, the significance of mastermind groups for law firms, and the importance of preparing for AI’s impact on legal practices. Listeners will gain valuable knowledge on how to effectively integrate AI into their operations while maintaining a focus on people and processes. Key Timestamps: 00:01 – Introduction 00:11 – Meet Eric Sanchez and Stacie Monahan 01:21 – Overview of Maestro Strategic Partners 02:31 – The Role of Mastermind Groups in Law Firms 04:47 – Overcoming Isolation in Legal Practice 05:39 – The Importance of Diverse Perspectives 06:58 – AI’s Role in Law Firm Operations 08:41 – Challenges of AI Implementation 10:06 – Risks of Relying Solely on AI 12:02 – Evaluating AI Tools for Law Firms 14:22 – The Need for Agility in AI Adoption 16:15 – Cybersecurity Concerns with AI 17:26 – Upcoming PILMMA Initiatives 19:22 – Training Programs for Law Firm Operators 21:15 – The Importance of Candor in Advisory Roles 23:38 – Preparing Law Students for AI Disruption See all episodes or subscribe to the Personal Injury Marketing Minute here: https://optimizemyfirm.com/podcasts/. What is the role of mastermind groups for law firms? Mastermind groups are essential for law firms as they provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and problem-solving among non-competing firms. They facilitate transparent discussions about profitability, vendor relationships, and operational challenges. These groups serve as a safe space for law firm principals to share and receive feedback, helping them avoid echo chambers that can hinder growth by exposing them to new inputs and ideas outside their own firm. How is AI influencing law firm operations and technology adoption? AI is increasingly integrated into law firm operations, impacting areas like intake, case management, and document review. However, its adoption is contingent on the firm’s readiness to change and the processes in place. While AI can enhance efficiency by handling mundane tasks, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Successful implementation requires understanding AI’s role in specific tasks and ensuring staff are prepared to incorporate these technologies into their workflows. What are the challenges and considerations in adopting AI for law firms? The adoption of AI in law firms comes with challenges such as ensuring data security and the need for staff buy-in. Firms must assess their readiness and infrastructure before integrating AI tools, as poorly implemented technology can complicate operations. It’s crucial for firms to pilot AI solutions carefully, perhaps during off-hours, to gauge effectiveness without disrupting core functions. Additionally, firms need to be agile, ready to revert changes if the AI does not perform as expected. How is technology shaping the future of law firm operations? Technology is rapidly evolving, and law firms are increasingly leveraging AI for tasks like medical chronology and document review. Some firms are even developing their own AI tools to meet specific needs. However, maintaining and updating these tools as technology advances is crucial to avoid obsolescence. Firms must also consider cybersecurity and data privacy when adopting new technologies, ensuring robust measures are in place to protect sensitive information. What initiatives are being launched to support law firm operators? New training modules are being developed to equip law firm operators with comprehensive skills in managing firm operations. These programs aim to cover all aspects of firm management, from HR to cybersecurity, and are particularly beneficial for operators who have been promoted from paralegal roles and may lack broad operational experience. Additionally, there is a push to create mastermind groups specifically for high-functioning operators, providing a platform for sharing advanced strategies and experiences. How are law schools preparing students for the evolving legal landscape? Law schools are currently lagging in preparing students for the practical and technological aspects of modern legal practice. As AI continues to disrupt traditional roles, there’s a growing need for legal education to incorporate training on AI and business management skills. Law students should be equipped to use AI tools effectively and understand their implications, rather than focusing solely on traditional legal analysis, which AI is increasingly capable of handling.

The line trade gives apprentices the opportunity to earn while they learn and train for a lifelong career powering their communities. Before they even join an apprenticeship program, however, some high school graduates are learning the basics of line work through a pre-apprenticeship. For example, our latest ICYMI episode of the Line Life Podcast highlights the one-year Electric Utility Technology Program at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) in Iowa. This article, "Training for a Future Career on the Line," which originally appeared in the October 2025 issue of T&D World magazine, spotlights two former students: Trevor Grefe and Kellen Miller. Grefe became interested in the line trade because he wanted to work with his hands, found the concept of electricity fascinating and wanted to help people. Miller learned about opportunities in line work as an intern at an architectural firm after seeing a photo of a lineworker hanging out of a helicopter, working on a transmission line. For more information, visit DMACC's training program website or read the article on T&D World's website.
Research years. Professional development time. Career exploration.Whatever you call it, stepping out of clinical residency can feel confusing, intimidating, and oddly hard to plan for. In this episode of Behind the Knife, our BTK Surgical Education Fellows Drs. Elizabeth Maginot, Nicole Petcka, Agnes Premkumar, Kara Button, Emma Burke, and Michelle LaBella sit down with Dr. Daniel Nussbaum, Associate Professor of Surgery at Duke University and leader in the Duke Residency Research Fellowship Program, to unpack dedicated resident profressional development time really looks like, who it helps, who it doesn't, and how to make the most of it if you choose to step out of clinical training.Together, the group tackles:· Why “research years” are often better thought of as professional development time· Whether taking time out of residency is actually necessary for fellowship or an academic career· How to find the right mentor—and why there's rarely a “perfect” project· Practical advice on setting boundaries, saying yes (and no), and managing unstructured time· A clear, resident-level overview of funding options, including:- NIH T32 and F32 grants- NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP)- Society, foundation, and departmental funding· What faculty and program leadership look for when supporting resident research· Lessons the panel wishes they'd known before starting research timeWhether you're a medical student curious about residency structure, a resident debating whether to step out, or faculty mentoring trainees through career development, this episode offers candid insight, real examples, and reassurance that there's more than one “right” path. Most high-performing advisors can point to someone who helped shape their success. Yet many firms still leave learning to chance, assuming experience alone will do the work. In this episode, Ray Sclafani makes the case that training is not a nice-to-have but a growth imperative for advisory firms that want to scale, retain top talent, and deliver a consistent client experience.Drawing on industry data and real-world examples from ClientWise, Ray breaks down six practical steps firm leaders can use to build a learning-driven culture. A: According to LinkedIn's Learning Report cited in the episode, 94 percent of employees say they would stay with a company longer if it invested in helping them learn.Q: What are Professional Development Plans (PDPs)? A: PDPs are co-created plans between team members and their leaders that outline skills, competencies, and experiences needed for future roles. They are reviewed regularly and tied to measurable goals rather than treated as static HR documents.Q: Why should advisory firms budget intentionally for training? A: Research from the Association for Talent Development shows that top-performing companies spend more per employee on training and are more profitable than their peers. Training should be budgeted with the same discipline as hiring, marketing, and technology.Q: How does training support future leadership and succession planning?
