In this episode, Candace talks with guest Tony about the medical news that he and his partner received, himself requiring an open heart surgery, and his partner getting diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer's. He talks about making a counter-intuitive decision that went against what some research would suggest for patients with Early Onset Alzhemizers; instead, they retired, sold their home and became nomads running marathons and half marathons all around the world. Tony talks about what it was like to travel around the world running race after race in places like Madagascar, Bhutan and the Great Wall of China with nothing but a suitcase. The pandemic did not put a stop to their plan and they are still running around the world over 7 years later.Anthony L. Copeland-Parker was a professional pilot/manager for thirty-seven years, the last twenty-seven with United Parcel Service. His last job had him managing pilots and flying B757/767-type air-craft all over the world. When he retired, he began writing his blog, PlayHard-HaveFun.com. Since then, he and his partner Catherine have traveled to eighty-two different countries. They have run at least a half-marathon in thirty-five countries and on all seven continents. His book Running All over the World, adapted from a blog he wrote during their travels, is a nonfiction account of our five-plus years of flying, running, walking, sailing, and sightseeing from Atlanta to Antarctica and back again. Part travelogue and part medical memoir, it transports listeners to exotic places like Madagascar, Bhutan, and the Great Wall of China while at the same time offering a day-to-day look at what it means to have nothing but what's in your suitcase. It's also an offbeat love story, recounting the trials and tribulations of an ex-pilot with a passion for vistas and logistics and a woman so tough she walks a half-marathon in the Australian Outback mere weeks after breaking her ankle. During their years as nomads, they pushed their physical and mental limitations as often as they could - and finished every race hand in hand.Get a copy of Tony's book hereFollow Tony on FacebookFollow Tony on IGFollow Tony on TwitterFind Tony on Linkedin

Canadian professional figure skater Elladj Baldé tells us how he’s bringing the sport to a new audience through social media. Videos of Baldé performing unconventional routines to artists including Rihanna and Labrinth, have been viewed millions of times. He was born in Moscow to a Russian mother and a Guinean father and tells us he hasn’t always found it easy to express himself in the sport. Baldé also explains how we was once told to cut his hair to fit in with perceptions of how a figure skater should look and about his hopes for increasing diversity in skating. Gerda Steyn joins us to reflect on breaking the South Africa national marathon record, which had stood for twenty five years. The 31-year-old confirmed her place at a first Olympic Games, with her performance in Italy last week. We’re live at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on the opening morning of the World Snooker Championship. The BBC’s Jamie Broughton brings us the latest action and we hear from the world number three, Neil Robertson. The Australian tells us how a second world title could cement his legacy in the sport and why superstition means he’s keeping his lockdown hair for the tournament. In the week that marked 100 days to go until the Tokyo Olympics, we speak to New Zealand rugby sevens star Tyla Nathan-Wong. She explains how she battled perceptions about her height and heritage to make it in rugby and how her Chinese grandfather is her inspiration. Nathan-Wong also tells us about chasing the gold medal in Tokyo and why she couldn’t turn down the chance to be featured on postage stamps ahead of the games. In Sporting Witness – we tell the story of the Spanish hurdler - Maria Jose-Patino - who was forced to quit the sport in the 1980s after a test found she had male chromosomes due to a rare genetic condition. Maria fought a two year legal battle, successfully proving it did not improve her athletic performance. The case is seen as a milestone in the debate around genetic variation in sport. And the BBC’s Vicki Sparks joins us live from St James Park ahead of the early game in the Premier League between Newcastle United and West Ham United. (Credit: Getty Images)

SAfm — Comrades Champion Gerda Steyn reflect on her Ultra distance running journey. Guest : Gerda Steyn ( Comrades Marathon Champion)
This week on Womanity – Women in Unity, Dr. Amaleya Goneos-Malka talks to Ultramarathon Champion Gerda Steyn, who currently holds the titles to the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon. We discuss her tremendous success in a relatively nascent career of just six years and her vision for the future as she prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She shares her journey from quantity surveyor to professional athlete, including the transformation of her microcosm to optimise performance on the road. We discuss some of the dynamics of running, such as the team aspect of the sport, physical endurance and importantly mental strength – as the mind controls the body. Gerda reflects on the history of competitive marathon running for women, explaining that women were barred, because of the perception that they were physically incapable of running long distances. In 1967 Katherine Switzer triggered an equality movement through her official entry to the Boston Marathon and completion of the event despite attempts to haul her off the track. Today female marathon runners are free to nurture their talent competitively, they earn equivalent prize money to their male counterparts and now receive equal exposure from broadcasters. Tune in for more…
