According to Antoine Arnault, CEO of Loro Piana: "Luxury products are sustainable by nature." Hmmm. What do we think of that, then? Just because it's expensive doesn't make it ethical. In case you are not across these names, Arnault is a member of the LVMH dynasty (his dad, Bernard, is one of the 10th richest people on the planet) and Loro Piana is a posh Italian knitwear brand known for its cashmere and $500 baseball hats. But they've been in the news of late for rather less glamorous reasons, including sweatshop conditions in supplier factories in Italy. On this week's pod, Clare sits down with Jasmin Malik Chua, Sourcing Journal's Environment and Labor Editor, to unpack just how that can happen, and whether it's really true that you get what you pay for in high fashion.Thank you for listening to Wardrobe Crisis.Find links and further reading for this episode at thewardrobecrisis.comRead Clare's columns & support the show on Substack - wardrobecrisis.substack.comTell us what you think. Join Ian Croll, Gav Buckland and Joe Thomas for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast. Everton suffered an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth in their Premier League Summer series opener. Moyes' men started brightly and edged the first half despite failing to take the lead. The second half was a different story however, as Bournemouth scored three without reply, two of the goals coming from avoidable mistakes thanks to mishaps from Nathan Patterson and Jake O'Brien. Preparation ahead of the game wasn't helped by more injury woe with Everton missing three central defenders. Moyes was forced to field a makeshift back line which held strong during the first half, but faltered in the second. It's clear that Everton need reinforcements across the pitch and the need for players won't be helped by Moye' open and honest comments in a recent Athletic interview where he said the club were struggling to bring in the players he wants. The lads on today's show discuss all that and more on the latest Royal Blue podcast. ECHO Everton reporter Chris Beesley – the only UK journalist reporting on David Moyes' men throughout their entire time in the USA for the Premier League Summer Series – is out on the streets of the Big Apple for a special edition of the Royal Blue podcast. Ahead of the Everton Supporters' Club Welcome Event at The Turnmill bar, Chris is joined by James Rogers and Michael Setterberg, the co-chairs of NYC Evertonians, plus fellow Blues fan and native New Yorker Stephen Neave, who nevertheless is at pains to differentiate his Brooklyn roots outside the 27th Street establishment in Manhattan. With some typically robust New York Everton chat from the panel there are also several outspoken cameos from the club's larger than life outspoken bouncer Josh who intersperses the conversation on several occasions in what is one of the format's liveliest and grittiest ever episodes! We've all had tough days at work, right? But I'm going to bet your last one didn't involve multiple colleagues fainting from heat stress. My guest this week is researcher and academic Cara Schulte, author of an important new report, for Climate Rights International, that looks into the effects of the effects of extreme heat on garment workers in Bangladesh. These don't stop at the physical. Workers describe feeling mentally unwell, anxious, hopeless even desperate as both temperatures and humidity climb. And as climate change accelerates, we can only expect conditions to get gnarlier. So what can fashion do about all this?Listen to find out about the role of education; how pregnant women are impacted; how heat is linked to violence; why drinking fizzy pop won't help; how working hours, low wages, audits and PPE come into it; and practical action to improve things that would make a difference today.Cara's ultimate message: "When we think about sustainability in fashion, it's not just about materials and recycling - it has to be about people."Essential listening for anyone who produces in the Global South, or buys clothing made there.Thank you for listening to Wardrobe Crisis.Find links and further reading for this episode at thewardrobecrisis.comRead Clare's columns & support the show on Substack - wardrobecrisis.substack.comTell us what you think. For further details go to https://saily.com/bloodred Join Joe Rimmer, Dave Powell and Ian Doyle for the latest Blood Red podcast as they discuss the possibility of Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike at Anfield. Liverpool's game of chess continues as they step up their efforts to bolster their attacking ranks. The Reds are in the market for a new centre-forward and despite being linked with a plethora of possible targets, two leading candidates have seemingly emerged. On Tuesday (July 15), widespread reports claimed that the Reds had made contact with Newcastle United regarding star striker Alexander Isak and would be willing to make a British record offer to sign him. As reported by the ECHO, no official offer has yet been made by Liverpool for Isak, while Anfield sources would deny there had been contact from anyone at the club to anyone at Newcastle. But that is not to dispute the interest as the Reds weigh up their options ahead of making their move. Isak is not the only player on Liverpool's radar, though. They are also interested in Hugo Ekitike. *#BeMoreDan: Fascinating Tales From Liverpool's Incredible History* https://reachsportshop.com/book/lfc-stories/ Download SAILY in your app store and use our code bloodred at checkout to get an exclusive 15% off your first purchase. Join Ian Croll, Chris Beesley and Joe Thomas for the Monday edition of the Royal Blue podcast as they look ahead to the start of Everton's pre-season campaign this week. The Blues are set to kick off pre-season with an away trip to League Two side Accrington Stanley. With a number of senior players involved in International action over the summer and not yet back in the fold, this presents a chance for a number of academy players to make their mark. Just how will Everton line up? And is there any cause for concern, given how threadbare the squad is with so much work in the transfer mark still to be done? Everton have made a number of moves already this summer, with two key signings confirmed in Carlos Alcaraz and Thierno Barry, however, it's clear a number of essential areas still need to be filled. Blues boss David Moyes is keen on strengthening the squad with Premier League experience, which includes players who will be able to stabilise the club's position in the table as well as push on for Europe. With numerous players from across the continent linked, Moyes has made no secret of his intent to create a robust spine, while bringing in quality players in attacking areas. Just where do those key areas lie? And what are Everton's priorities in the next phase of the window? In today's Royal Blue podcast, Ian Croll is joined by Gav Buckland to discuss the latest transfer news as well as reports of Jarrad Branthwaite's release clause and reports that Everton are looking for minority investment in Everton's Women's Team. Also on the agenda is John Textor, the American billionaire who had a failed takeover bid of the club and recently appeared on Talksport. Textor reportedly came close to buying the club and recently revealed why the takeover didn't happen. All that and more on the latest Royal Blue podcast. Is James Garner Everton's most divisive footballer? Why does a player who clearly possesses much talent divide opinion among Everton's fanbase? The midfielder has established himself as an important player under David Moyes with many strings to his bow, however since joining the Blues back in 2022, the former Manchester United man has yet to display his attacking qualities, having played 84 times, scoring only two goals and notching four assists. Compare that to his loan spell at Nottingham Forest in the Championship in the 2021/22 season, he scored four goals and provided 10 assists, which contributed to the East Midlands club's promotion to the Premier League. While Garner has shown glimpses of what he can offer, he is het to convince many Evertonians he can push on. Everton manager David Moyes will no doubt be hoping for more from him next season. In other news, Everton have moved another step closer to finalising a deal to bring Villarreal forward Thierno Barry to the club. Thierno Barry is set to undergo a medical with Everton after the club reached a deal with Villarreal for the forward. The 22-year-old is moving closer to joining David Moyes' squad after talks between the Blues and the La Liga side reached a conclusion. As previously reported, negotiations had been ongoing for some time. By the middle of last week there was growing hope Barry would become the club's second signing of the summer. Work still needs to be done for the deal to be completed but a move is now looking increasingly likely, with the clubs having settled on a fee for the France Under-21s international. Everton held extensive discussions with Villarreal last month, leading up to the breakthrough over a fee. Liverpool forward Diogo Jota has died in a car accident in Spain. The 28-year-old was travelling with his brother, Andre Silva, in the Zamora region of Sanabria when the incident occurred. According to the Zamora provincial council, firefighters attended the scene on the A52, known as the Palacios de Sanabria, after the vehicle caught fire. Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 1am on Thursday morning, with the vehicle heading towards nearby Benavente. Local reports have claimed the accident was the result of a blown-out tyre. The Portugal international married long-time partner Rute Cardoso on June 22. They have three children. Tributes have poured in for the Liverpool striker. This week's episode is an update from Accra, Ghana, and the situation at Kantamanto markets. It was recorded during the Global Fashion Summit in Copenhagen, where I met up with Liz Ricketts from The Or Foundation. It's a miracle more people weren't killed. Six months later, the market structure has been rebuilt, but there's still work to do. Find out how fundraising has been deployed, improvements have given all stallholders access to electricity and a new association of traders has been set up along with a unified security force trained in fire management. However problems persist around waste, the quality of what's in the bales and the dangerous work of female porters...Find Episode 150 with Liz, here.Read Clare's columns & support the show on Substack - wardrobecrisis.substack.comFind all the links for what's mentioned in this episode at thewardrobecrisis.comTell us what you think? Jarrad Branthwaite has committed his long-term future to Everton. The young defender has signed a new five-year contract with the club. The centre-back was the subject of two failed bids from Manchester United last summer and has been attracting interest again early in the summer window. However, the Blues have secured a significant coup in keeping him tied down until 2030. Branthwaite was named as the club's Young Player of the Year for 2024-25, having won the same award and the Player of the Year gong for 2023-24 after an excellent breakthrough season. Join Ian Croll, Tony Scott and Paul Wheelock as they discuss today's breaking news and the positive impact that will have on Everton moving forward.
