In this week's Wednesday mini episode, I'm walking through Phase Two of the First Marathon Buddy program and breaking down what actually matters during weeks 10 to 15 of a 20 week marathon training plan. This phase isn't about testing your fitness or grading every long run. It's about treating those miles like practice, experimenting and refining your fueling, protecting recovery as fatigue builds, and learning how to handle the mental spiral that tends to show up in the middle of a cycle. This episode is especially helpful if you're training for your first marathon, but experienced runners will probably recognize a few familiar patterns too. We talk through cumulative fatigue, under fueling, mid cycle doubt, and the importance of zooming out when one rough workout tries to define your entire build. Phase Two is where durability and quiet confidence are built, and where consistency matters more than perfection. The First Marathon Buddy course is live! Like finishing a marathon, successfully completing a Rubik's Cube is something that even those who have never done it understand that it's challenging, unique and worth celebrating. And the few who have done it enjoy a special type of camaraderie. To most minds, the similarities between the cube and the marathon stop there. But for this week's guest, Canadian Running's cover athlete, George Scholey, there's much more to the equation. At just 23, Scholey has already broken multiple Rubik's Cube world records, including for the most cubes solved in 24 hours. In recent years, he's begun a new pursuit: marathon running. It wasn't long before his two passions converged–in his hometown at the London Marathon, where he broke yet another record, solving 520 cubes over the course of the marathon (an average of more than 12 cubes per kilometre). On this week's episode, George joins us from his new home base in Canada, where he's working on the business of cubing as a brand manager at Rubik's global headquarters in Toronto. We talk about the parallels between cubing and training, how he fits the pieces of his full-time work and passion project together, and what the world's most popular puzzle might have to offer runners of all ability levels.Subscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcastsFollow George on Social Media @George.ScholeyThanks to this week's sponsor, CanPrevPrime your preparation, power your performance, and prioritize your post-run recovery with CanPrev. In this week's episode, we start with insights on winter run training, including when to prioritize treadmill versus outdoor running, how to plan safe routes in snow and ice, what to wear, how to fuel, and other key considerations for durability in the cold, ice, snow, and wind. We then spend most of the episode with Katie's reflections on the parallels—and important differences—between labor & delivery and endurance racing, including managing uncertainty, focusing on process goals, building a flexible plan, and identifying what you actually need from your support team. Katie also shares early postpartum reflections on physical healing, sleep deprivation, motivation shifts, and how she's thinking about movement, systems, and self-compassion in this new phase of life. Throughout, we explore how endurance training mindsets translate to major life transitions, honoring different seasons, and redefining what “enough” looks like. Weeks later, he kept the record-breaking streak going with a career-defining run of 2:05:36 at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon, taking a minute and a half off of his personal best and breaking his own Canadian record in the process. Fast forward three years, and Levins is returning to the playbook that served him so well in the past, as he'll toe the line this weekend at the Vancouver First Half in a final tuneup effort before a much-anticipated return to the streets of Tokyo on March 1.Now, eight years into his marathon career and nearly 14 years since his first Olympic team in London, Cam joins the show to talk about how he continues to chase excellence in the sport. We talk about his famous high-mileage training, how he's found his way back to healthy running after years battling injury, and what it all looks like while balancing life as a new father. Plus we talk about his return to the streets of Tokyo, a city that has been a common thread throughout his marathon career, and what it'll take to once again capture lightning in a bottle there in less than a month's time. Subscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcasts.Follow Cam on Social Media @CamLevins

It's about setting expectations, learning how to read your plan without panicking, building a routine that fits your life, and dialing in effort early so training doesn't fight back later. This episode is especially helpful if you're training for your first marathon, but experienced runners will probably recognize a few familiar traps too. We talk through patience, consistency, easy effort, and how to tell the difference between normal soreness and something that needs attention. Getting the worst flu of your life isn't a perfect plan for anyone's marathon race-week, but if there's any athlete who's used to less-than-ideal prep it's Hamilton's Erin Mawhinney, a nurse educator who balances training upwards of 150km each week with the demands of full-time healthcare work. At last month's Marathon Project in Arizona, Mawhinney's hopes of capitalizing on a flat, fast course against world-class competition were dashed by a nasty race-week flu that forced her to withdraw just 10K into the race. Yet for her and coach Reid Coolsaet, a 2xOlympian at the marathon himself, letting the months great training go unused was never an option.  Fast forward to January 11th and Mawhinney was back on the starting line of a marathon for the second time in under a month, this time in Texas at the Aramco Houston Marathon. Free from the illness that had derailed her previous attempt, Mawhinney would go on to run a massive 7-minute personal best of 2:29:36, finishing 5th in the women's elite field and making her the 12th fastest Canadian marathoner of all time. Today on The Shakeout Podcast, we're joined by Erin Mawhinney and Coach Reid Coolsaet to talk about the work behind the breakout performance and how they approach elite marathon training while balancing the demands of a full life outside of sport. Follow Erin @ErinMawhinney_Follow Reid @ReidCoolsaetSubscribe to The Shakeout Podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you find your podcasts.Huge thank you to this week's sponsor Smartwool. Back in December 2025, Libby Clark stepped up to the start line of the Centurion Winter Downs 200, a 200‑mile Ultra Marathon. Only nine women stood on that start line. Nine! And Libby wasn't just there to take part… she was there to race!Seventy‑five hours, sixteen minutes, and twenty‑seven seconds later, she crossed that finish line to claim a joint second place finish with Jemma Lyons. Today, we get to dive into that journey, the highs, the lows, the hallucinations, the juggle, and the glory. Key Takeaways Florida 70.3 Success: Danny's 3rd place AG finish (2:16 bike, 1:34 run) validated a marathon-focused training block, proving high run volume can maintain bike fitness. Houston Marathon Goal: The primary goal is a sub-3:00 marathon in Houston to secure a Boston qualifier (BQ) for the 45-49 age group (target: 3:07:30 to beat the ~7.5 min cutoff). Injury Management: A knee injury from high run volume was resolved with a fluid drain and cortisone shot. The Lever system was discussed as a key tool for injury prevention. Top Guns Update: The team has grown to ~60 athletes and partnered with Mauna for new kits. Ironman Marketing is producing a feature on the club. Florida 70.3 Race Report Context: The race served as a final 70.3 of the year, integrated into a marathon-focused training block with low triathlon specificity. Training Block: Run: 4 weeks at 50+ miles/week, followed by 4 weeks at 60+ miles/week. Bike: 5x/week, mostly easy Zone 1/2 rides (~190 watts). Swim: 1x/week (~3-4k yards) to maintain "feel for the water." Race Execution & Results: Swim: 28:00 (faster than expected on a slow, M-shaped course). Bike: 2:16:00 (avg. 270 watts) on a fast but not flat course. Strategy: Rode 5 bpm below normal 70.3 heart rate (145 bpm vs. 150 bpm) to conserve energy. Run: 1:34:00. Strategy: Ran at goal marathon heart rate (~150 bpm) instead of pace due to heavy legs. Outcome: The high run volume provided significant durability, preventing the usual second-half fade. Overall: 3rd place AG, ~30th overall. Marathon Training & Injury Management Houston Marathon Goal: Sub-3:00 to secure a Boston qualifier. BQ Target: 3:15:00. Effective Target: ~3:07:30 to beat the typical ~7.5 min cutoff. Pacing: Recent 4x3k workout at goal HR (~150 bpm) yielded ~6:40/mile pace. Knee Injury: Cause: Fluid buildup from high run volume. Resolution: 30 cc fluid drain + cortisone shot. Recovery: Resumed training 5 days post-procedure with no issues. Lever System: Recommendation: Use as an injury prevention tool to add unweighted run volume. Comparison to Alter-G: A cost-effective alternative that also helps with hip stability. Top Guns Team Update Growth: Roster now at ~60 athletes. Partnership: New apparel deal with Mauna. Media: Ironman Marketing is producing a feature on the club. Florida 70.3 Performance: World Slots: Matt Schuster and Tony Park qualified for the 70.3 World Championship in France. Slot Decision: Danny passed on his slot, citing the high cost (~$1,200) and low likelihood of attending. Coming Up! Danny: Execute the Houston Marathon on January 19, targeting a sub-3:00 finish. Consider purchasing a Lever system for injury prevention. Colin & Danny: Resume consistent podcast recordings in 2026. Dedicate the next episode to Colin's health and triathlon return.

"It's seeing the bridge from a distance and saying, ‘There are going to be 55,000 people that are going to traverse over that bridge from 150 countries from all over the world, and from every neighborhood in New York City.' And they've put in months of hard work. We have thousands of people that have raised millions of dollars for charity. There are people that are running for various causes that are inspiring their families, their friends, their neighborhoods, their communities. And most of all, they're inspiring the world. They're inspiring complete strangers as they run by them. And I think about that when I look at that bridge." —Ted Metellus, TCS New York City Marathon Race Director Every year on the first Sunday of November, more than 55,000 runners will take over the five boroughs for one reason: the TCS New York City Marathon. This episode is your unofficial guide to the iconic 26.2-mile race. Two jam-packed hours of New York City Marathon-related information. And this episode isn't just for the marathoners: We have tips for spectators, a breakdown of how to get into the race in the future, and general advice for having your best marathon day. As for my New York City Marathon love affair: This race is my Super Bowl, my Christmas, my birthday, Valentine's Day, my favorite day of the year. It was the first marathon I ever watched, back in 2008, when I went out to cheer for a coworker who was running the race. (Thanks for the inspiration, Therese!) I've run it three times — in 2013, 2014, and 2016 — and volunteered once, in 2015, at a fluid station in Brooklyn. In 2017, I cheered on “First and Fifth,” and in 2018, at three weeks postpartum, going to the New York City Marathon was my first outing since having a baby. I sat in the grandstands as Shalane Flanagan finished third, and pumped in a “fancy” (you know, the nice kind!) finish line porta potty. Then, in 2019, I got the best seat in the house for the first time: New York City Marathon finish line announcer. After announcing at the finish and at the Finish Line After Dark in 2019, 2021, and 2022, in 2023 I made my NYC TV debut. I joined the broadcast talent team as a reporter on the international feed, and was featured on the WABC7 local broadcast. Last year, I was on the ESPN and WABC7 broadcasts at the finish line, interviewing notables including Chelsea Clinton, Casey Neistat, Conner Mantz, Clayton Young, Sara Vaughn, Matt James, and Ilona Maher. This year: They're putting me on ESPN and ABC again! In addition to hosting a live show with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone during New York City Marathon weekend, on race day I'll be part of the ESPN2 and WABC7 broadcasts as a start and finish line reporter from 8 AM until 5 PM.
