The DEC hosted Mike Sievert, CEO of T-Mobile, on Thursday, May 2, at the MotorCity Casino Hotel. In a conversation moderated by Jackie Paige of WWJ Newsradio 950, Mike discussed "Forever Disrupting: T-Mobile's Evolution From Underdog to Leader in Wireless and Beyond" and answered questions from the audience.
John McElroy joins for a second time to discuss topics such as electrification, autonomy, and the concept of peak auto. McElroy shares his perspective as an automotive industry enthusiast and highlights the diverse skill sets required in the industry. Takeaways The automotive industry requires diverse skill sets and drives economic growth. Autonomy has the potential to save lives and transform society. Car sales in certain regions may not significantly increase in the future. Automakers face the challenge of designing cost-effective vehicles. Legacy automakers can face challenges in adapting to new technologies and the shift towards electric vehicles. Creating separate organizations or skunk works programs can enable a more entrepreneurial approach to develop new products. Balancing the risks of launching new products with an all-new team, plant, and workforce is crucial. The Innovator's Dilemma provides examples of successful shifts in other industries. Chinese startups with lower cost structures pose a significant challenge to legacy automakers. The supply chain faces disruption as the transition to electric vehicles reduces the demand for conventional components. Suppliers must adapt by diversifying their offerings or finding new industries to apply their core competencies. Legacy automakers must find ways to design costs out of vehicles effectively. He joined “Something Offbeat” this week to dive deeper. How has the situation since then impacted the supply chain workforce? And how much could the backup impact Christmas shoppers? Guests: Jonathan Gold (Vice President of Supply Chain and Custom Policy for the National Retail Federation), Jeff Gilbert (Auto Industry Reporter for WWJ Newsradio in Detroit), Matt Sterbenz (General Manager of Winter Sports for Checkspot) and Guy Platten (Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping).

The Result of Care: Part One No matter the vocation it's a struggle to achieve quality or to be the best. Well, imagine trying to define it. Some write complex tomes containing various recipes which is fine for a Debate Team but hardly applicable to everyday life. Others like philosopher Robert Pirsig take a sleeker, more modern day approach. He believes the best or highest quality can be defined simply as producing whatever by "the result of care." So if philosophers, lit experts and big thinkers battle over meanings, how does one come up with a standard that means "the best?" Well if you're the jurors of the North American Car and Truck of the Year Awards (NACTOY) you have a criteria you work from. Sure there are still disagreements, arguments and fights over who is "more right" but that's the beauty of the award: subjectivity to the max. And on this week's Autoline John McElroy and his panel discuss those fantastic sparks inside, outside and around the vehicle that made them go WOW! Joining John to discuss the finalists for Car of the Year are fellow jurors Jim McCraw from NewCarTestDrive.com and Jeff Gilbert of WWJ Newsradio 950 -- CBS Detroit.
