In this episode of Time To Talk Titanic, Arron, Chandler, Presley, David and Callum discuss the wreck of the RMS Titanic, the laws and regulations put in place to protect it, the different ideas that have been thought of over the years to preserve or even raise her, and the multiple ways that people have taken advantage of the tragedy and the wreck for their own profit. Artifacts and even parts of the ship have been raised from the ocean floor and put on display in museums and touring exhibits, in an attempt to educate people and keep the story of Titanic alive. However, artifacts have also been sold at auction and disappear into private collections never to be seen by the public. Is this right? Titanic's story is being preserved, but at what cost? Let's talk about it...

The song is "Step Aside" (擱淺), which was first released in 2004. The list is based on the 10 most requested songs at Party World KTV clubs in Taiwan for Oct. 25-31. The PTT member also observed that half of the songs are by artists from China. Chinese singer Xiao Ah Qi (小阿七) seized the No. 1 spot with her song "Once upon a time" (從前說). In second place was "Red Scarf" (如果可以) by WeiBird (韋禮安), followed by Power Station's (動力火車) "Love me true" (我很好騙), Zhang Yuan's (張遠) "Jia Bin" (嘉賓), Ren Ran's (任然) "Fei Niao He Chan" (飛鳥和蟬) rounding out the top five. In Doctrine and Covenants 21:1, the Lord commanded the Prophet Joseph Smith that the Church's records and history should be kept "continually." While the prospect of recording and preserving those records can seem daunting, the Lord has promised that the keeping of records would be "for the good of the Church, and for the rising generations." Matt Heiss is the manager for the Global Support and Training Division of the Church History Library in the Church's seven areas in Europe and Africa. He is the guest on this episode of the Church News podcast. Since 1987, Heiss has worked with the Church History Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to acquire, manage and train others on collecting Church history. He discusses the importance of Church history, the potential of recording-keeping and what he knows now after decades of working for the Church. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Host Sarah Jane Weaver, reporter and editor for The Church News for a quarter-century, shares a unique view of the stories, events, and most important people who form this international faith. Before the Roswell UFO crash, there was another...like no other! Throughout the history of conventional archeology, artifacts have been found that seem to defy what we know about what we know. Did the Maine Penny, the Shroud of Turin, and the Antikythera Mechanism simply evade our previous understandings of what ancient societies were doing, and where, and when — or is there a case to be made for otherworldly intervention? This week we welcome Jessica Crawford, an incredibly knowledgeable Archaeologist hailing from The Archaeological Conservancy, to discuss all things related to our Native American cultures spanning from thousands of years ago to present day. What type of tools did they use and how did they make them? What site types did they inhabit? Did they practice any type of gamekeeping similar to how we do it today? Where do I look for artifacts, and what is ethical and/or legal means of doing so, and how do I properly document them? What do I do if I find a “site” or “mound” on my property? We also shared a couple of stories about the dark side of artifact collecting. Jessica and her family come from a long line of hardcore hunters and farmers, making her a perfect fit for this discussion we've been wanting to have for quite some time. If the power of our dominant cultural artifacts is to be countered and if new, better artifacts are to be created, Christians must be grounded in a thoroughly biblical vision for life and the world.
A conceptual update of affordance theory that introduces the mechanisms and conditions framework, providing a vocabulary and critical perspective. Technological affordances mediate between the features of a technology and the outcomes of engagement with that technology. The concept of affordances, which migrated from psychology to design with Donald Norman's influential 1988 book, How Artifacts Afford: The Power and Politics of Everyday Things (MIT Press, 2020), offers a useful analytical tool in technology studies—but, Jenny L. Davis argues in How Artifacts Afford, it is in need of a conceptual update. Davis provides just such an update, introducing the mechanisms and conditions framework, which offers both a vocabulary and necessary critical perspective for affordance analyses. The mechanisms and conditions framework shifts the question from what objects afford to how objects afford, for whom, and under what circumstances. Davis shows that through this framework, analyses can account for the power and politics of technological artifacts. She situates the framework within a critical approach that views technology as materialized action. She explains how request, demand, encourage, discourage, refuse, and allow are mechanisms of affordance, and shows how these mechanisms take shape through variable conditions—perception, dexterity, and cultural and institutional legitimacy. Putting the framework into action, Davis identifies existing methodological approaches that complement it, including critical technocultural discourse analysis (CTDA), app feature analysis, and adversarial design. In today's rapidly changing sociotechnical landscape, the stakes of affordance analyses are high. Davis's mechanisms and conditions framework offers a timely theoretical reboot, providing tools for the crucial tasks of both analysis and design. Jenny L. Davis is Associate Professor of Sociology at Australian National University. Michael O. Johnston, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He is the author of Community Media Representations of Place and Identity at Tug Fest: Reconstructing the Mississippi River (Lexington, 2022). His general area of study is on media representations of people and place at festivals and celebrations. He is currently working on his next book where he conducted research on an annual canoeing and kayaking event that takes place on the Upper Mississippi River. To learn more about Michael O. In a society (and a holiday season) often focused on consumerism, we can sometimes forget to treasure the special objects in our lives—things handmade or heartfelt, infused with prayers and dreams, memories and love, that we hold as totems while traversing our daily lives and rituals. In our last episode, Sheryl spoke about some "artifacts of the heart" that she took with her when evacuating under threat of a flood. In this episode, we turn our attention with reverence to some more of our most sacred objects. A pendant, a scarf, a candle holder, a guitar: each holds stories, stories of people and places that have shaped us, practices that bolster us, values we live by. We are sharing some of those stories today. We hope this episode helps you to reflect on your own artifacts of the heart, and that you'll share some of their stories with us.
Charlie Potter is joined by Mississippi River Levee Board Member Hank Burdine to discuss how life on the Mississippi River is at a record low. Later, the addressed the artifacts found dating back tens of thousands of years.

As a debate over how and when to repatriate art continues to roil, one clear-cut case of looting in the 19th century has art leaders taking strong stands now. Jeffrey Brown went to look at a museum that is confronting the controversial origins of its collection. It's part of our arts and culture series, "CANVAS." Episode 118 is our tribute to the late, great Tame One. We love doing tributes on Take It Personal, but we absolutely hate having to do a tribute them under these conditions. We've lost many great artists over the years like Biz Markie, Kangol Kid, MF DOOM, Prince Markie Dee, Gift of Gab, Shock G, Zumbi, Black Rob, Double K, Len Hub (The Roots), Malik B, DJ Kay Slay, Coolio, Takeoff, Pop Smoke, Hurricane G, Ecstasy, Blacastan and Don Newkirk to name a few. And it feels like we're still getting over the loss of Prodigy, Phife Dawg, Sean Price, Pimp C and Guru. On this episode, we're honoring the art created by Rahem Brown, better known as Tame One, one half of the Artifacts and an intricate part of New Jersey hip-hop movement. Tame entered our lives in the early 90s with witty lyrics, an appreciation for graffiti and a passion for hip-hop. He went on to give us two remarkable albums with El Da Sensei as the Artifacts before he took a journey into his solo career. On this tribute we're showcasing everything from the early days with El and Redman to the Eastern Conference days. We got everything from the Leak Bros to The Weathermen to all his great collabos with artists like Del, Sean Price, Hussein Fatal, Yak Ballz and Govna Mattic. This is our Tame One Tribute. We hope you enjoy it!
