This Day in Maine for Friday, August 29th, 2025.
Maddie Prohaska was initially drawn to soccer to spend time with her friends but fell in love with the goalie position because it was, “weird, different, unique.” It also produced special moments where it was all on her. As her career evolved, so did her mindset from “nothing else matters, I will give up everything” to” I will strive to strike what's important for my physical and mental performance.” Not surprisingly, by thinking about things differently, she started to train differently using visualization, journaling, meditation and reframing her approach on the field. The results were record breaking. At University of Auburn, Maddie played over 96 matches with 36 shutouts! She was a 2022 Golden Glove Winner and 2023 Team Captain. In March 2025, she signed with Seattle Reign FC and in June 2025, she was selected to the Team USA U23 team. She shares that she didn't always believe she was capable but started to once she realized others did. By focusing on her feelings and identifying her values off the field, she is able to be where her feet are typically stopping a soccer ball and giving her team a chance to win! @m.proha

Like so many elite athletes, Carly Nelson grew up playing multiple different sports and was attracted to soccer because she could run around with her friends and kick a ball. She was both a field player and a goalie until a pivotal moment at age 15. During a typical game while playing goalie, she saved a great shot and experienced feelings of excitement, euphoria, validation, appreciation and ultimate confidence realizing, “I can do this!” Despite this life changing moment, she was talented enough in college that she didn't fully understand the work ethic required to be great. That was until she sustained a severe concussion and learned that her sport could be taken away from her at any moment. She also learned the critical values of self-talk, discipline, and effort through the unlikeliest of circumstances. After 4 years at the University of Utah, achieved her goal of becoming a professional athlete where she has played for the last 5 years for the Seattle Reign, Kansas City Current, Orlando Pride, Utah Royals FC. Carly explains however that while many consider professional sports a dream, it's really a job and it began to take away the joy, excitement, and validation she once felt. As hard as it was to get into pro sports, she made an even harder choice to step away. By taking care of her own health and wellness and appreciating herself, she is highlighting that if we want people to show up for us, we need to show up for ourselves. Showing up for ourselves might include walking away from something we love. @carly_nelson
“ I don't really want to be who I was before I was injured. In a lot of ways, I'm thankful to a place that just completely broke me, just brought me to some really low points. That's when I was able to grasp my faith or what it was, which is my personal worth. It has absolutely nothing to do with a soccer field or anything of the sort. Just learning that my worth and my fulfillment comes solely through my faith has been something that will go so much farther through life than soccer ever could.” Civana Kuhlmann started playing soccer at a young age and quickly excelled, consistently playing on the youth national team beginning in eighth grade. From childhood through her sophomore year at Stanford, she faced no serious injuries. But that all changed when she tore her ACL during preseason before her junior year. After surgery, she had to support the team in a whole different way as they reached, and then won, the NCAA championship. After that, Civana went through several additional procedures for her meniscus and hips; she's now had a total of seven surgeries. Throughout, she faced pivotal moments of learning to advocate for herself in the face of physical pain. As skilled as they are, doctors aren't inside your body, she points out—athletes must trust their intuition and communicate their needs during recovery. Through her physical and mental setbacks, including the emotional impact of losing her friend Katie Meyer to suicide, Civana learned to redefine herself on and off the pitch. But though she realized her worth had nothing to do with her skills as an athlete, her love for the game persisted. Ultimately, she was drafted into the National Women's Soccer League, where she's currently a free agent. Taylor Kemp was baptized Catholic, but early in his life, soccer effectively became his religion, taking up not only all his time on Sundays, as well as all his attention and affection. The more success he found, the more inadequate he felt, realizing that he had made himself and his soccer skills the measure of everything. By the time he had become a professional player in the MLS with DC United, he had developed a spiritual hunger that eventually began to be fulfilled when he met his future wife, a Catholic who encouraged him to take a look at the Church he'd left as a kid. Taylor went through RCIA and was confirmed, and is now on fire for his faith, working to to develop faith formation programs with the Augustine Institute.
