Oscar night is almost here, and Below the Line closes out its 2026 Oscar series with a look at the Academy Award for Best Original Song. This week, Skid is joined by returning guests Chris Molanphy, Louis Weeks, and Tom Peyton to break down the five nominees — a lineup that ranges from chart-topping K-pop to blues-infused cinematic spectacle, intimate indie folk, and even a rare operatic outlier. As the ceremony approaches on March 15, the panel weighs not only which song will win, but how each nominee functions inside its film — and what that says about the evolving relationship between movies and popular music. Among the highlights: Diane Warren's Dear Me — her 17th nomination — and a candid conversation about formula, legacy nominations, and the Academy's enduring embrace of one of its most persistent contenders Why Golden from K-Pop Demon Hunters has become the category's undeniable frontrunner — and how its structure, performance demands, and cultural impact set it apart The scope and ambition of I Lied to You from Sinners, and how its blend of blues tradition and cinematic storytelling makes it more than just a “song” An operatic curveball in Sweet Dreams of Joy from Viva Verdi! — and what happens when a classical aria sits beside pop craftsmanship Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner's Train Dreams, a meditative, image-driven piece that bridges songwriter performance and filmic atmosphere The conversation moves easily between technical craft and big-picture questions: What makes a song “original” in today's industry? Should Best Original Song reward chart success, narrative function, or musical innovation? And in an era of streaming metrics and algorithmic pop, what still feels distinctly human?
In this episode we discuss the songwriter's Sisyphean quest for an academy award and go through each of her record-breaking 17 nominations. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It's our annual Oscars episode, with our resident Oscars Scholar, Denise Rodriguez*! Despite the fabulous "Sinners" getting a record 16 noms, we found some egregious snubs to discuss: Eva Victor, Naomi Ackie, and "Sorry, Baby"; Jesse Plemons for "Bugonia", Jennifer Lawrence and "Die My Love", to name a few. We get hot and heavy about the new casting category (only one man nominated here), "Sinners" and the other films/performances nominated that we loved. Plus, the perpetual injustice of the Diane Warren nomination, and why it's time for a Best Performance By a Non-Binary Actor category. *Denise has recently launched an exciting new service: Menopause Doula! She explains that menopause starts much earlier than you might think. And traditional medicine is not cutting the mustard on diagnosis and treatment. Diane Warren is one of the most successful and prolific songwriters in music history — and a proud SAG-AFTRA member. Her catalog includes many of the biggest pop songs of the past several decades. In this episode, she talks about the relentless drive behind her career, her new documentary and the early challenges that shaped her voice as a writer. Diane shares how she "casts" artists to bring her songs to life and why no form of A.I. can match the soul behind a truly human song. *The views expressed by guests are their own and do not necessarily reflect the views of their organization or SAG-AFTRA. In this Telugu podcast episode, Oscar-winning lyricist Mr. Kanukuntla Subhash Chandrabose shares a deeply personal and inspiring journey through words, music, and resilience, marking a historic moment for Indian cinema with *RRR* becoming the first absolute Indian film to win an Oscar. He relives the emotion of that night, the pride of global recognition, and the lesser-known moment when legendary American songwriter Diane Warren predicted the Oscar win weeks before nominations were even announced. For Chandrabose, the award was not just a trophy but validation of Indian storytelling, Telugu language, and music reaching the world. With over 3600 Telugu film songs to his name, Chandrabose reflects on how songs like *Nenu Unnanani*, *Panchadara Bomma*, *Raju Nuvve*, *Chiru Chiru Chinukai*, *Kumkumala*, *Oo Antava*, and many others were born in the most ordinary yet magical moments like train journeys, petrol bunk stops, long nights, and emotional conversations. He talks about writing songs during travel, singing them to himself hundreds of times, and creating multiple versions before arriving at the final lyric. Long before digital metrics existed, he believed that people were the only true measure of success, even distributing cassettes by hand during *Student No.1* and learning directly from audience reactions. The episode dives into his unique writing philosophy shaped by his illiterate mother who deeply loved songs, and the lifelong influence of literary giants like Acharya Aatreya, Sri Sri, Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry, and others. Chandrabose explains why writing simply is far more difficult than writing complex poetry, how he avoids repetition across thousands of songs, and why emotion always comes before structure. He reflects on rejection, humiliation, and the patience required to keep going, sharing how some songs received true recognition only after 20 years. He also speaks about the evolution of Telugu cinema music, the misunderstood role of item songs, and how their purpose and meaning have transformed over time. From decoding lyrics on shows like Swarabhishekam to collaborations with iconic directors and composers, Chandrabose shares behind-the-scenes stories that shaped landmark soundtracks. The conversation touches on dubbing songs, lip-sync challenges, the greatness of the Telugu language, and how lyrics can travel beyond cinema to influence society, business, and real-life decisions.A significant part of the discussion focuses on royalties, IPRS, and intellectual property rights, and how songwriters today can finally receive long-term recognition and earnings. Chandrabose explains how songs like *Kumkumala* and *Chiru Chiru Chinukai* continue to generate royalties years later, proving that music outlives films. He also acknowledges pioneers like Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry for fighting for writers' rights and creating a foundation for future generations.Blending childhood memories, his BTech background, early struggles, love for language, emotional connection with “amma,” and unforgettable moments from his career, this episode is warm, reflective, and deeply motivating. If you love Telugu songs, lyric writing, Indian cinema, music history, creative journeys, and stories behind iconic melodies, this conversation offers inspiration, honesty, and timeless wisdom that stays with you long after the music fades.

She's a fan of the band. They're currently touring the new album with stops in our region.

From the outside, Chrissy Metz seemed to have it all starring in a hit show, inspiring millions, and radiating confidence but behind the spotlight was a woman navigating the painful realities of childhood trauma, body image struggles, people-pleasing, and the long road to emotional healing. In this heartfelt conversation, Chrissy opens up about the survival patterns she developed as a young girl trying to be “good” enough to be loved and how those patterns followed her into adulthood. She shares her experience growing up in a fractured home, enduring emotional pain in silence, and turning to food as both comfort and protection. Through therapy, spiritual grounding, and creative expression, Chrissy began the deep work of untangling her worth from performance. We explore the cost of being the peacemaker, the fear of being truly seen, and the challenge of letting go of perfection. Chrissy reflects on her journey into acting, the power of being chosen for a role that mirrored her own struggles, and how her latest children's book is helping the next generation talk about emotions that many of us were taught to suppress. This is an honest, soul-stirring episode about the courage it takes to stop performing and start healing from the inside out.__________________Follow/Watch/Listen/Subscribe: Instagram: @rootedrecoverystoriesTiktok: @patrickcusterprojectYouTube: @rootedrecoverystoriesFacebook: @rootedrecoverystoriesWebsite: www.rootedrecoverystories.com__________________Cast:Patrick Custer - HostInstagram: @thepatrickcusterTiktok: @thepatrickcusterYouTube: @thepatrickcusterFacebook: @thepatrickcusterWebsite: https://linktr.ee/patrickcusterChrissy Metz - GuestInsta: @chrissymetzFacebook: @chrissymetzofficialYoutube: @chrissymetzmusic Tiktok: @chrissymetzX: @chrissymetzWebsite: www.chrissymetzmusic.comSpotify: Chrissy Metz__________________Get Help (addiction, mental health/trauma):Promises Behavioral HealthCall: (888) 648-4098Website: www.promises.comInstagram: @promises_bh__________________About Chrissy Metz: Emmy and two-time Golden Globe nominee Chrissy Metz stars on the award-winning NBC series "This Is Us,” winner of the 2018 and 2019 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and People's Choice Award for "Favorite New TV Drama.” Chrissy recently starred as Joyce Smith in the hit 20th Century Fox faith-based film, BREAKTHROUGH. Kelsie Watts's musical journey began in Lubbock, Texas, where she found her voice at two years old in a family of musicians. From early performances in church and school to studying opera and commercial music at Belmont University in Nashville, she developed her craft and gained recognition. Her self-released music led to a feature on AJ McLean's 2020 single “Hurts to Love You,” while her viral rendition of Kelly Clarkson's “I Dare You” on The Voice Season 19 earned her a spot on Team Kelly and millions of views. Now an independent pop artist, Kelsie continues to inspire with her music and advocacy. Her single “Live Out Loud” became the anthem for the Tokyo Sky Tree Global Campaign during the 2021 Olympics, followed by empowering tracks like “Look What You Missed” and the poignant ballad “I Can't Say Goodbye,” honoring her late brother who she lost to mental health struggles. In 2024, she released “After Midnight” and “Forgetful,” a Diane Warren-penned duet with Nate Amor. For episode 160 of the podcast, join Rain Phoenix at Licorice Pizza as she hosts an engaging conversation with legendary songwriter Diane Warren and rising musician Mergui. This episode offers a deep dive into Diane's illustrious career, her creative process, and her collaboration with Mergui on the song "Criminal." The discussion provides unique perspectives on the music industry, including insights from one of modern music’s most celebrated songwriters. IN THIS EPISODE: [5:05] Diane Warren's early musical influences [11:10] Writing I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing and OSCAR nominations [13:00] Diane launches Mergui [15:28] Diane's versatility across musical genres [20:00] Mergui’s insights on sampling Elton John’s song KEY TAKEAWAYS: Diane Warren's journey into songwriting began at a young age, sparked by her fascination with record credits. She would study the names of songwriters on albums, dreaming of seeing her own name there one day. This early passion and determination set her on a path to becoming one of the most successful songwriters in the industry. Despite the challenges faced by women in the music industry, Diane never let her gender define her capabilities. Inspired by trailblazers like Carole King, she pursued her career with confidence, never doubting her potential to succeed as a songwriter. Collaboration with artists like Mergui showcases Diane and Mergui's ability to adapt and thrive in different musical genres. Diane’s intuitive sense for matching songs with the right artists has led to successful partnerships, allowing her to continue creating timeless music across various styles. It’s important for songwriters to find the right artist to sing and produce their songs, someone who will honor and preserve the meaning and the music. That’s when the magic happens. She has penned nine #1 and thirty-three top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and is tied for having written the most #1 songs as a sole writer in Billboard history. She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the prestigious Johnny Mercer Award from the organization in June 2024. She has received 16 Academy Award nominations, is a GRAMMY winner with 15 nominations, an EMMY winner, and is a two-time Golden Globe winner whose songs have been featured in more than 150 films. In November 2022, Warren became the first songwriter in history to receive an Honorary Oscar, as voted on by the Academy's Board of Governors. She recently wrote the original song "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G for the film Flamin' Hot, directed by Eva Longoria, which marked her 15th Oscar nomination. She most recently wrote the original song “The Journey” performed by H.E.R. for the feature film The Six Triple Eight directed by Tyler Perry which marked her 16th Oscar nomination. She is the sole owner of her publishing company Realsongs, the most successful female-owned and operated business in the music industry. Warren is a recipient of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a nod to her legendary career, having worked with many of today's most popular artists, including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, H.E.R., Snoop Dogg, Paloma Faith, Jon Batiste, Maren Morris, John Legend, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Andra Day, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson and Janelle Monáe, in addition to having written songs for iconic artists such as Whitney Houston, Cher, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, and many more. Mergui has made it his mission to push the limits of modern pop music. He’s accomplished some incredible feats such as opening for Bruno Mars and Maroon 5. His talent has been recognized by publications such as Rolling Stone, Billboard, Wonderland Magazine, and Notion. Drawing inspiration from the rich tapestry of early 20th-century Italian opera and the nostalgic allure of ‘70s AM pop, Mergui’s sophomore EP Shadows of Blue was a remarkable fusion of influences. Notable tracks from the EP include the Elton John-approved “Cry,” and “Happy Now?”, which he performed on The Kelly Clarkson Show and NBC’s The TODAY Show, resulting in the track skyrocketing to the Top 10 on the U.S. iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. Mergui’s music has been featured in top-notch editorial playlists across digital service platforms including Spotify’s New Music Friday (US & Global), Chill Pop, New Pop Picks, and Just Good Music. Mergui’s unguarded sense of vulnerability shines through in his art, landing him a coveted spot on People Magazine’s Emerging Artists of 2024 list. Following a successful tour with Forest Blakk and a collaboration with Sam Feldt in the latter half of 2024, Mergui is ready to take 2025 by storm with the release of his latest EP Nobody Really Knows.
