Do you have sparkling blue-green eyes that are the colour of the Pacific Ocean? Do you have hair like spun gold? Are you tanned, energetic and a perfect size 6? Neither are we. Listeners of Double Love that love the show mention:The Double Love podcast is an absolute gem for anyone who was a fan of the Sweet Valley High book series as a teenager. Hosted by Karyn and Anna, two hilarious Irish women, this podcast takes a deep dive into the strange and often absurd world of Sweet Valley. With their witty banter and feminist perspective, Karyn and Anna provide a nostalgic and entertaining look at these beloved books.
One of the best aspects of The Double Love podcast is the chemistry between Karyn and Anna. Their back-and-forth banter is witty, sarcastic, and absolutely hilarious. They play off each other's comments and observations with ease, creating a dynamic that keeps listeners engaged and laughing throughout each episode. Their genuine love for the series is infectious, making it impossible not to get swept up in their excitement.
Another great aspect of the podcast is the hosts' knowledge about the series. They have clearly done their research and are well-versed in all things Sweet Valley. From referencing obscure characters to dissecting plotlines, Karyn and Anna demonstrate a deep understanding of these books that goes beyond mere nostalgia. This expertise adds depth to their discussions and makes for a more enriching listening experience.
In terms of drawbacks, one potential issue with The Double Love podcast is that it may not appeal to those who are unfamiliar with or uninterested in the Sweet Valley High series. The episodes primarily focus on recapping and discussing specific books from the series, which may limit its appeal to a niche audience. Additionally, some listeners might find that the humor can be quite specific to Irish culture at times, which might not resonate with everyone.
In conclusion, The Double Love podcast is an absolute delight for fans of Sweet Valley High or anyone looking for a hilarious trip down memory lane. Karyn and Anna's witty commentary, extensive knowledge about the series, and feminist perspective make this podcast an enjoyable listen from start to finish. Whether you're new to the series or a longtime fan, The Double Love podcast is sure to entertain and leave you eagerly awaiting each new episode.
You wait five episodes for some action in this mini-series and then all of it comes at once! Yes, it's all kicking off at Camp Echo Mountain and we are loving it. Jessica skives off the colour war to picnic with Paul, leaving doormat Liz to compete in her challenges as well as her own. But then she's captured by an axe-wielding maniac whose name is so amazing we simply can't spoil it here! Can Liz and Nicole put aside their differences to save not just Jessica but the killer's other captives? All this and our new faves Buford and Johansen take up new surprising roles! We're back in Camp Echo Mountain, and there's a new villain in town. But is local maniac (their words, not ours!) Crazy Freddy just a campfire horror story, or is an axe-wielding killer really lurking by the lake? Our new favourite character Nicole is determined to convince Liz of the latter, though considering how good Liz is at gaslighting herself, Nicole doesn't have to try too hard. Meanwhile Paul continues to be irredeemable, a floral French picnic provides a moment of genuine hilarity, and a much-loved old character returns... We're back at Camp Echo Mountain, where Jessica's plan to win Paul's horrible heart reach new heights of sociopathic toxicity. If you literally have to kidnap someone on a canoe, it's a bad sign Jess! Meanwhile a heartbroken Liz gets bad advice from Maria, Winston rides a horse and Lacey loses her damn mind. It's movie night in the clubhouse this week, as we take a look at the 1983 TV movie Quarterback Princess - and are thoroughly charmed by it. The original '80s Sweet Valley vibes are strong with this one, as Canadian teenager Tami Maida - played by Helen Hunt – spends a term at an American high school and becomes their star quarterback. We expected clichés, but instead we got a surprisingly warm, naturalistic depiction of a girl who defies convention and is celebrated for it by her lovely family and the cutest football team ever. All this and a character who basically is Jessica Wakefield! Oh, and some football stuff that went totally over our heads. If you like, you can watch the film on YouTube before hearing our recap of the whole thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCCvJx3nFI Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Is Liz in a lavender haze? She's certainly not in her right mind in this episode, as she's torn between Todd and Joey. Will she actually make a choice between the two boys or will her nemesis Nicole (whose crimes have clearly been forgotten by everyone else at Camp Echo Mountain) make it for her? Meanwhile Jessica responds to toxic masculinity in the least healthy way possible, Lila continues a Sweet Valley tradition and Winston is dressed up as a cowboy against his will (the most entertaining bit of this boring book). We're back at Camp Echo Mountain, which continues to be a mess thanks to the disturbingly unprofessional Lacey Cavannah. As Lila pretends to be an outdoor type to impress Bo and Liz mopes over red-lipped Pob, sorry, Joey, Jessica is feeling quite smug - her vow to stay away from boys has left her the happiest member of the trio. But of course she can't fight her true nature for long! And Liz's crush isn't her only problem, as her own campers and the evil Nicole continue to torment her. Will justice ever be served? It's the summer holidays (again)! And so the twins and Lila are off to Camp Echo Mountain, an absolute kip in the wilds of Montana. Liz can't wait to be reunited with her former BFF Maria Slater (who?) and mould young minds, but alas things don't work out as she planned - not least because Maria is joined by her current BFF Nicole - and when Liz meets her redheaded rival, it's "hate at first sight". Will she be distracted by alleged hunk Joey? Meanwhile Jessica swears off boys (well, she has buried three boyfriends by now, she needs a break) and Lila is determined to snag an extreme sportsman called Bo. The high school war is drawing to a close, but as the incredibly spoilery cover and indeed title suggest, there'll be a tragic casualty before peace breaks out. While this half of the book has a lot of boring surfing stuff, it also contains a lot of drama, including Todd's melodramatic prison fears, scary bikers who sell boats, Rosie being the worst undercover agent ever, and Bruce planning a carjacking. All this and some surprising shout outs to legendary Sweet Valley moments of the past! We're back! And we pick up exactly where we left off, in the aftermath of the warehouse battle. Todd and Bruce have been carted off to the Big House, where the fists of fury make a dramatic appearance, Liz is torn between concern for Todd and anger at her macho classmate's violence, and Jessica and Christian are just driving around in his sordid sex van. Liz is desperate to end the high school war, and comes up with a classic plan to make that happen. She finds an unlikely ally in cartoonishly villainous Palisades surfer Rosie Shaw - but can she trust her? Happy Christmas, gang! In our now yearly tradition, we're sharing one of our bonus episodes of Pi Beta Alpha with you! If you like what you hear, you can sign up to Headstuff+ and join us in the PBA clubhouse at headstuffpodcasts.com. It might not strictly be a Christmas episode, but it does feature snow and skiing! You know we love it when the gang leaves the Sweet Valley town limits (wherever the hell they are). This week the twins, Cheryl and Enid head to a ski resort, where Jessica is determined to finally beat Elizabeth on the slopes. Liz clearly doesn't care about this alleged rivalry, but when she gives in to Jessica's demands for a rematch, the Wakefields find themselves in danger. Meanwhile Enid is tempted to betray "the Manimal" when she meets a ski lodge hunk, Todd is once more shockingly endearing, and our hopes for the return of Winston's Mario-esque ski dungarees are cruelly dashed. All this and a montage! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The high school war (remember that? Don't worry, this book will remind you of it a LOT) is still raging, and when Bruce leads the SVH lads to slash the tyres of the Palisades goons' cars, things escalate pretty quickly. Alas it's Winston who ends up in true danger - will he be the first fatality of the conflict?! Meanwhile Ken discovers the truth about Jessica's surfing sessions in a deliciously dramatic style, and Saint Liz turns her attentions to the Palisades girls, with deeply awkward results. Did you know there's a high school war on? Well, don't worry, you'll get reminded of it a LOT during this episode! After the dramatic rumble at the Palisades/SVH dance, the Sweet Valley jocks are out for blood - and a stunned Jessica vows never to see her Palisades love Christian again. Of course her vow lasts about 48 hours - but will Ken, who now seriously gives her the ick (#poorKen), find out about her affair? Tension rises in both Sweet Valley and Palisades this week, as Liz's attempts to forge connections between the two schools backfire spectacularly. Being called Li'l Windbag has traumatised Ken so much he's basically had a personality transplant, and the former lovable himbo can think of nothing but revenge. Luckily this distracts him from the fact that his girlfriend is cheating on him yet again. Things come to a head at the big dance that's inexplicably taking place in a manky old kip full of cobwebs - where Jessica makes a shocking discovery. We're back! And not before time. When the Palisades Pumas play dirty on the football pitch, the boys of Sweet Valley vow revenge, but Liz, Enid and their new Palisades pals decide to bring the rival schools together with a dance. Of course. However, when the SVH lads indulge in some truly iconic terrible trash talk, tensions rise even further. Meanwhile, Jessica decides to become a champion surfer in the space of a month, and meets a mysterious beach hunk. Could this finally be the beginning of the end for her and Ken? Devon Whitelaw has remembered that Sam is responsible for the yacht fire that killed his parents - but his warning comes too late for Liz, who is already in the evil businessman's clutches! Ever get the feeling you've been cheated? We had high hopes for Jessica's diary, which promised to reveal all about Jessica's steamy antics with Jeffrey French behind Liz's back. But unlike Liz's secret diary, which featured a whole romance with Ken, this is basically just a recap of SVH books 30-40 with a few references to #poorjeffrey shoehorned in! Join us for a trip down memory lane featuring highs (Jessa Fields! Tofu-Glo!) and lows (pretty much everything else). But the book manages to take us by surprise in the end... Don your young executive outfit and pick up your poetry books, we're heading back to SVU! Jessica comes up with a scheme to both go to the big dance with college boy Zach AND stay in the Theta sorority's good books - and it's unhinged even by her standards. Will Liz go along with it?(Well, hat do you think?) And the Sweet Valley High gang's frankly worrying plan to bring home the twins gets going - will that old trick reverse psychology work its magic yet again? All this and an excellent SVU books shoutout plus a genuinely good twist we didn't see coming! The Wakefield twins are still at SVU - and it looks like they won't be coming home. High on her inexplicable success in the journalism competition and her own massive sense of entitlement, Liz is determined to shine at SVU - but she may be out of her depth. Meanwhile Jessica is so smitten by Zach (who is remarkably tolerant of her consistently unhinged behaviour) that she's decided to stay in college too #poorken. Can their pals persuade them to return to Sweet Valley High? All this and the return of the young executive! We all know that when it comes to journalism Elizabeth's favourite subject is Sweet Valley, so when she's inexplicably allowed to enter a college feature writing competition on student life, she's stumped for an angle. Luckily for us, but unfortunately for her rivals, she finds the perfect topic for her hilariously ignorant yet sanctimonious style! Meanwhile Jessica continues to date Zach (#poorKen) and spin him a web of lies. But her romance may destroy her chance to become a Theta (in two whole years). While Billie enables Jessica's nonsense, Steven is losing patience with his house guests - and seriously who can blame him? Despite Jessica's appalling academic record, Ned and Alice have decided that the best way for her and Liz to recover from the SAT drama is to take them out of school for a week and send them off to Sweet Valley University to stay with Steven. Why? Who knows! But we do know that the twins have very different visions of the college experience. Jessica is determined to spend the week impressing college guys (urgh and also, Ken who?) while Liz is looking for more intellectual stimulation. When their hosts head away for a poorly scheduled romantic getaway, Jessica is determined to throw a huge party in the free gaff and immediately starts inviting random hunks. Can Liz foil her twin's schemes? Or will she just be a doormat as usual? The twins resit the SATs, but while Liz's stress free approach to the exams leads to triumph, Jessica's serious studying leads to disaster. When Jessica is suspended from school, Elizabeth is determined to prove her twin's innocence. How? With an inexplicably legally binding mock trial, of course! But when Jessica's school records are revealed, will they help or hinder her cause? We always suspected the educational standards at SVH were pretty terrible, but this book reveals they're even worse than we thought! It's SAT time and Liz is stressing out, while Jessica is totally chill. But there's a shock in store when the results come out! Jessica has aced the exams, while Liz has got the worst test results of her life. While Jessica fears being labelled a “nerd in hip clothes” (she wishes), Liz starts to spiral. Is the perfect twin actually not as smart as she thought she was? She looks to Todd for comfort, but offers from college sports recruiters have gone to his head. Meanwhile many faces from the past return (including some very unwelcome ones), Mr Collins offers genuinely wise counsel, Jessica checks out hunks in a college prospectus and she and Lila wear a staggering amount of silk. The gang are still out in the desert, and things are getting even more dangerous. Eagle attacks! Floods! And of course murderous (and in one case hunky) OTG convicts! But if any proof were needed that nothing can keep these freaks down, it's surely the fact that even when facing their imminent deaths, the SVH gang are still doing what they do best: bickering and flirting. There's a time and a place, lads, and this is not it! We find the gang right where we left them in Death Valley - stuck between a storm and a cave full of skeletons and scorpions. Things are getting desperate for the Sweet Valley Six, as they try and make it across the desert with nothing to sustain them but a few granola bars. Unsurprisingly, they all start losing their minds - especially Bruce. Yes, it's the infamous snake murder scene! Elsewhere Liz and astronomer (?!) Ken rekindle their old flame, Jessica and Heather encounter some convicts - and we end on a very literal cliffhanger. Welcome back to Death Valley, where the gold is cursed and the hiking teens have lost their damn minds! After the gang take a detour to find a second batch of gold, they decide they have to head straight to Desert Oasis. But Jessica tricks foolish Todd into taking them even further out of their way in order to find the third gold hoard! Consumed by gold fever, soon the gang are throwing their cans of food away to make room for treasure, getting swept away by rapids and being pursued by cursed scorpions. Pack your rucksacks and fill your single water bottle, we're heading to Death Valley! Yes, having all placed highly in an essay competition which we can only assume some of them were forced to enter at gunpoint, the twins, Todd, Ken, Bruce and Heather are hiking through the desert without any adult supervision. It all sounds absolutely hellish and not just because Liz is in full good girl bossy mode. But the gang's squabbles are forgotten when they find a bag of possibly cursed gold nuggets in a disused mineshaft... Don your curly blonde wig and bring your mauve blusher, Todd, Ken and Winston (or rather Tilda, Kendall and Winnie) are all dragged up and ready to sneak into the CHRLDR compound! Some really do like it hot, and Ken in particular is loving his delightful new look. He and Todd are determined to win back the twins - but will they get the sticky end of the lollipop? Meanwhile Heather's secret is out and the SVH girls are determined to make a cheering comeback. If only they could spell... Shake your pom-poms in tribute, because it's the end of the cheerleading trilogy. Rah rah rah! Like Margo and Nora before her, Karyn has headed west to California so there's no new ep this week! But we do have the third installment of Anna's unhinged 2002 fanfic, From Here to Sweet Valley, which I think we can all agree is a more realistic depiction of the twins' adult lives than Sweet Valley Confidential. Liz reaches out to an old friend, Jessica has worrying thoughts about Bruce, and Winston attempts to flee his terrifying wife Lila. Listen to a sample here, and follow the link in the show notes to read more. Is there any way to have these posts in our show page? At the moment they're impossible to find because they're not linked to the Double Love page. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The SVH cheerleaders are heading to Yosemite! Yes, Jessica and Heather's combined teams have reached Nationals, and the battle to be the best cheerleaders in the entire country. But after Heather encounters a familiar face at the cheerleading compound, things start to go horribly wrong.... Meanwhile Todd and Ken head off on an ill-planned roadtrip to win back their girlfriends, press-ganging Winston en route, Annie makes a show of herself and Mr Collins tries to keep the peace. Remember the Pom Pom Wars? Neither do we! Yes, it's been a while since we checked in on the rival Sweet Valley cheerleading squads but don't worry, we'll give you a quick reminder of the last book before we find out what happens when Jessica's new squad make their impressive public debut. Are you ready for a cheer-off? Meanwhile a lovesick Liz channels Margo, Mr Collins and Enid (they exist!) give sensible advice that is completely ignored, and Ken proves he's the best person in Sweet Valley (unless you're poor forgotten Terri we suppose). Don your blonde wig, pop in your blue green contact lenses, and have a little rummage in your portable Wakefield wardrobe, it's time to return to The Return of the Evil Twin! Nora and Margo have teamed up at last - and luckily the denizens of Sweet Valley are as dozy as ever because within days the Chapelle sisters are successfully impersonating the Wakefield twins. Have you learned nothing, Ned and Alice? The dynamic duo swiftly cause trouble between Liz and Jess - but tensions arise when it becomes clear that Nora and Margo both have the same twin in their sights. And as for the Voice? Well, it gets a very confusing story arc of its own! The second half of the greatest book ever written is even better than the first. We're back! And we're not the only ones making a grand return. Yes, it's been a year since we bid a fond farewell to our favourite psychopath, but back then we didn't know (and neither did the ghostwriters, because they're clearly just making this up as they go along) that Margo had a twin! Meet Nora, an orphan who discovers at her father's funeral that she has a twin sister who was given to an orphanage when they were two. When Nora learns what happened to Margo in Sweet Valley, she resolves to avenge her twin's death - and that means killing the Wakefield twins! But there's a big surprise waiting for Nora in California... This book was everything we could have hoped for. It's got it all - Prince Albert, southern melodrama, the bush, knives, wigs, schemes and of course our favourite character of all: The Voice. And that's just in part one! Happy Christmas, listeners! To celebrate, we're sharing a special festive episode of our Headstuff+ bonus series Pi Beta Alpha - and if you like what you hear, you can sign up to Headstuff+ and join us in the PBA clubhouse every fortnight at headstuffpodcasts.com. It's Christmas in Sweet Valley (again!). And while Liz attempts to single-handedly organise the Toys for Tots Christmas party, the rest of the gang are heading to the mountains for a festive fiesta in Shred's dad's ski lodge. Will they leave Elizabeth to wrangle the tots alone? Jessica and Lila have no interest in the Christmas spirit - until they fall asleep during a massage and are visited by three delightful and strangely familiar ghosts, who show them the error of their ways. This truly is a deadly Christmas! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It's Christmas! So to celebrate, we're breaking out the jingle bells and the (small) bag of cans and taking a trip down memory lane to discuss our favourite moments from the Sweet Valley High books we read in 2023. And what moments they were - from Bruce's visit to Dublin's most glamorous tourist attraction to the iconic Cookie Monster Werewolf's dramatic debut, from Young Executives to improbably framed photographs, a lot happened in Sweet Valley this year. And we had a lot of fun reminiscing about it all. P.S. Don't worry, it's not a clip show! And if you'd like more SVH nonsense in your ears until we return in the new year, remember you can access our bonus series Pi Beta Alpha by signing up to Headstuff+. Also! Having quit the cheerleading squad at the end of the last book, Jessica is facing an existential crisis. What is she if not a cheerleader? Luckily she won't have to find out. With Ken's encouragement, she starts her own rival squad, and a whole lot of familiar - and surprising! - names attempt to join it. Liz of course has no interest - but then Jessica, who has discovered her twin's sensational secret diary, makes her an offer she can't refuse... This is one of the most popular books in Sweet Valley history among you listeners, and we can see why - it's got us shaking our pom poms in delight! Also! We're back in Sweet Valley High, and the tension between Jessica and newcomer Heather just keeps on building. The sneaky newcomer constantly undermines her co-captain - and it looks like most of the squad, newly obsessed with making it to nationals, are being won over by Heather's lavish gifts of megaphone pins and flashy new uniforms! When Heather boots two veterans off the squad, Jessica declares war - but will she win this battle? Meanwhile Liz continues to mope about Ken - and takes out her frustrations on her (for once) innocent twin. Also! Break out your bag on cans, don your best silk blouse because we are live at the Podcast Studios! Join us and special guest Amy Clarkin (don't forget to vote for her in the Irish Book Awards) to discuss the stupidest SVH thriller yet. When the twins inexplicably bring Nicholas Morrow along on their work outing, he meets a beautiful, constantly weeping girl called Barbara, who dresses like a Victorian ghost. They of course fall instantly in love - but Barbara is staying with her strict uncle who forbids her from socialising. She tells Nicholas to stay away for his own safety - but you can guess how he reacts to that! Meanwhile the twins, who are still interning at the Sweet Valley News, find their assignments have connections with Barbara's plight... Also!
