This week, I sit down with a lead product designer, community builder, and all-around multi-hyphenate to talk about owning your career before someone else does.What happens to your sense of identity when the job goes away? Derrick and Jeff share a serious update: Derrick shares his story behind being diagnosed with prostate cancer back in May, which will put the show on another hiatus after two remaining episodes (June 16 and June 23). Derrick explains his history of prostatitis and family risk, a PSA spike, biopsy and cystoscopy results, and a PET scan showing no spread; doctors believe it was caught early. He chose surgery scheduled for July 2, discusses recovery expectations (including a week with a catheter and significant activity restrictions), and says July will likely be off while they reassess in August. They emphasize the importance of getting checked, and thank supporters.

Our semester-long hiatus is over! We've missed you, friends, and we wanted to check in this spring. We've both been busy with many things—both in our work here in the Education department at Dordt University, and in other things we also get to do. In this episode, Abby shares about her adventures in school leadership, and Dave shares about his adventures traveling all over the place. I wanted to share a quick update about Militantly Mixed.Just as I was starting to get back into the swing of things with the show, my precious cat Kreia died the day after I arrived in Seoul, Korea. I am devastated, not only to lose her, but also to not have been home with her when she died.Because of that, I am not in a place right now to finish editing the third interview I still have to edit, let alone record new episodes. I need to take another break to grieve and to focus on my last boy, Krayt, making sure he stays healthy, active, and cared for. I am not prepared to lose him, too.I know the show has been a bit spotty over the past couple of years due to all my losses, and I appreciate your patience and understanding with my show work.
