Long before cancer survivors organized into a movement, Hollywood had already shaped how Americans understood the disease. Films rarely used the word “cancer,” physicians often withheld diagnoses from patients, and the people who survived were almost nowhere to be found on screen.Recorded before The Cancer Mavericks: A History of Survivorship became a documentary series, this bonus conversation explores where the project first began. Matthew Zachary sits down with his mother, Roz Greenzweig, a retired educator and lifelong film enthusiast whose memories of classic cinema became an unexpected lens for understanding how cancer was portrayed throughout the twentieth century.Together, they revisit landmark films including Dark Victory, Love Story, and other iconic portrayals that reflected an era when cancer was treated as unspeakable, inevitable, and almost always fatal. Their conversation contrasts those carefully constructed Hollywood narratives with the lived reality of a family confronting a brain cancer diagnosis in 1995, revealing how popular culture both reflected and reinforced the fears surrounding the disease. The discussion also foreshadows many of the themes explored throughout the documentary series: the evolution of patient advocacy, the emergence of cancer survivorship, the role of caregivers, and the power of storytelling to influence public understanding. Before policy changed, before advocacy organizations grew into national movements, conversations like these were already challenging long-held assumptions about what cancer looked like and who had the right to tell its story.Consider this the prologue to The Cancer Mavericks. Before the movement found its history, it began with a family trying to make sense of the stories they had inherited.RELATED LINKSAmerican Cancer SocietyNational Cancer InstituteAmerican Film InstituteER (NBC)50/50 (Official)Chasing Life (ABC Family Archive)FEEDBACKLike this episode? The hiatus for the rebooted 3WHH is over! We got the band back together, and to further paraphrase the political philosophy of the Ellwood brothers, it's 70 minutes to the end of this podcast, we've got a full glass of whisky, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses. Just like Anthony Fauci in his glam cover shot for In Style magazine back in 2021.Most of our changes are cosmetic, and it it still a work-in-progress, but the two main new features on display this week is a short "cameo" appearance from a slate of contributors we're signing up, and responding to the best reader/listener question. This week's cameo is from Alex Priou of the University of Austin, who has some definite opinions about The Odyssey. Two main topics are on our mind this week: the mendacious Dr. Fauci, and what pathways for legal redress might still be open despite President Biden's pardon. Second, we spend some time discussing the "republican guarantee clause" of Article IV of the Constitution, which is usually overlooked, and thought to be non-justiciable, if not in fact a nullity, similar to the 9th Amendment. We take up this question because of Glenn Reynolds' mischievous suggestion on his Substack that President Trump might be able to invoke the clause to justify sending federal authorities into states with high potential for vote fraud. Here's the key passage from Glenn's article:"So if President Trump announces that we have uncovered massive electoral fraud — as he almost certainly will — and that he is dispatching huge numbers of federal election watchers to oversee voting and counting in areas where fraud has occurred, he would be acting directly under a power that the Constitution has vested in him. For a state to have a “republican form of government,” it must have meaningful elections, and elections that are rigged are not meaningful. Stopping them from being rigged would be protecting a republican form of government. Congress has passed other election laws, mostly for reasons of combating race discrimination, but those aren't strictly applicable to these circumstances. . ."Could make for some fun times!

You already know who you are. You just keep looking for proof you fit. The search is over — and The Impulsive Thinker® is done pretending you're the problem. In This Episode: Why ADHD isn't the problem — the world is The ugly difference between chaos and urgency for ADHD Entrepreneurs Ambition, self-care, and the brutal truth about people pleasing What You'll Take Away: The ADHD Entrepreneur brain runs on interest, not importance — that's not a flaw Chaos is not urgency; stop letting your business become a self-made fire drill People pleasing stacked with urgency is a recipe for burnout — and it's not ADHD The world's systems are the problem, not your brain or ambition You need to shelve goals, not your sanity ABOUT THIS EPISODE This episode is The Impulsive Thinker® stripped down. No guest, just a late-diagnosed neurodivergent Entrepreneur holding up the last 500 episodes and calling bullshit on the search for "normal." This one punches through ADHD, entrepreneurship, neurodivergent experience, and why chaos keeps stalking your calendar. You get the difference between actual business urgency and chaos addiction. The Impulsive Thinker® lays out why burnout keeps following ADHD Entrepreneurs — and why it's about broken systems, not broken brains. Stop measuring yourself on society's measuring stick. If you keep blaming ADHD for feeling scattered, here's your wakeup call. This one is for the ADHD Entrepreneur done pretending they fit and bored with one-size-fits-all advice. Hit play if you're ready to stop searching and actually build on what's already working in you. Email me about it at andre@theimpulsivethinker.com. Remember — ADHD failure is measured on society's measuring stick. Not yours. Your brain runs on interest, not importance. That's not a flaw. That's a different operating system. ADHD is not a deficit. It's a difference.
In the maelstrom that is modern life, we've lost any sense of seasonality. These days, the summer is as non-stop as any other time of the year and the long, sun-drenched days can come and go without any real rest or relaxation. But we remember a time in the not-too-distant past when July and August offered a welcome lull — a time to retreat, to recharge, to reinvent. To dream, even. The summer felt expansive, wondrous. We're convinced that this annual reprieve was essential for maintaining sanity. So this year, we've decided to bring back the slow summer. It's been a busy 2026 so far at Lean Out, during our fifth year in operation. The newsletter has surpassed eight million views and has been on the Substack bestseller list. The podcast, meanwhile, has just published its 256th episode. Not bad for a niche Canadian outlet dedicated to heterodox non-fiction current affairs books (and sometimes articles). That's all down to you, Lean Out's wonderful subscribers, and we can't thank you enough for your support. Tara's latest book, based on the work that we've been doing here — and on the 2024 Massey Essay — will be released in North America at the end of this month. (Pre-orders are helpful, should you be so inclined.) The Trust Spiral: Why the Media Needs Objectivity is already getting a great response and it has been especially gratifying to field interview requests from across the political spectrum. Lean Out normally goes dark for three weeks in the summer, but this year we are taking an extended break as Tara promotes her new book and then takes a few weeks of much-needed time offline — hopefully in the wilds of British Columbia. All monthly payments have been paused as of today, and yearly subscriptions will be extended when we resume production in the fall. As we slow down and reflect on the year so far — and mull over where Lean Out might go next — we'd love to hear from you on what is working and not working about this newsletter and podcast. Your feedback is most welcome. In the meantime, our hope for all of you is that you are also able to unplug at least a bit this summer, rediscovering all of the things that make life most worth living, from nature and travel to food and family and friendship and community. And of course, good books! We'll be doing our best to recapture that same spirit of adventure and discovery, and will share it with you all when we return in the fall. You can find Tara Henley on Twitter at @TaraRHenley, and on Substack at tarahenley.substack.com

Hey, Who fans, and welcome to The Big Blue Box Roundtable. After a couple of months away, the July roundtable brings Garry, Matt, Maria, and Harry back together to pick up everything that's happened since we last recorded. And there's been a lot.We kick off with a proper recap of the DWAS Capital event down at the Crowne Plaza, covering everything from Paul McGann practically joining us for breakfast to Matt's unexpected few minutes talking bacon and sausages with Dan Starkey, Tommy Knight and Gary Russell's "Return to Bannerman Road" panel, the Saturday night auction, and why Tony Jordan deserves a massive thank you for what he's built over the years. Then we get to the news that dropped while we were away. The Christmas special is gone, Russell T Davies and Bad Wolf are out, and the show is going to tender. We each share where we landed on all of it, and the feelings are not exactly simple. There's disappointment about the way it was handled, frustration about being lied to about a script that apparently never existed, a strong reaction or two to RTD's Instagram post, and the broader question of what happens to Doctor Who now and who might bring it back.We also end up in a full debate about whether filming in Wales has run its course, and the conversation goes somewhere nobody expected.Want to check out our podcast about Blake's 7? Your nine-to-five pays the bills, but it doesn't define your career, and if you think it does, that might be the thing holding you back. This week, I sit down with a lead product designer, community builder, and all-around multi-hyphenate to talk about owning your career before someone else does. What happens to your sense of identity when the job goes away? Have you built anything outside of it that would survive? My guest this week is Frank Bach, a lead product designer who's worked at places like Instagram, DoorDash, and Headspace. But honestly, the resume might be the least interesting thing about Frank. He also runs the LA Design and Dev community, teaches courses, fronts a hardcore band called Monk, and runs his own e-commerce shop, Sunshine Shop. Frank is someone who has clearly figured out that a career worth having doesn't fit neatly inside one little box.We get into a lot in this conversation, like the danger of tying your self-worth to a company name, why “personal brand” feels so gross to so many designers, and what it actually looks like to cultivate what you're known for without becoming a full-time content creator. Frank has a really practical way of thinking about all of this: treat your full-time job more like a freelance engagement, stay in “maintenance mode” when life demands it, and remember that your manager is thinking about their own promotion, not yours. We also talk about the other side of having a lot going on: how to decide when something's run its course versus when you just need a breather, how to balance side projects without letting them eat your life, and why starting something messy is always better than waiting for the perfect moment. If you've ever felt like your career is just happening to you, this one's worth a listen.Topics:• 03:20 - How Frank got into design and the multi-hyphenate mindset• 04:20 - The danger of tying your self-worth to a company name• 05:05 - Treating your full-time job like a freelance contract• 06:25 - The upside of big brand names on your resume• 07:05 - What happens to colleagues who lean too hard on “ex-Google, ex-Meta”• 08:17 - Why personal brand feels gross to so many designers• 09:35 - Personal brand isn't just posting on LinkedIn• 11:10 - Being memorable: your look, your setup, your presence• 13:40 - The Instagram hiring story: 15 years of showing up paid off• 14:45 - Internal brand: the designers who are legends without being online• 15:37 - Maintenance mode: you don't have to be 100% all the time• 19:38 - Does your day job have to fill your creative cup?• 21:05 - How side projects made Frank more valuable at work• 24:45 - How to have the side project conversation with your manager• 28:40 - How Frank stays consistent with so many things going on• 29:15 - The minimum viable version: where to start if you have nothing• 30:19 - Knowing when to cut something loose• 33:57 - Hiatus vs. done: how to tell the difference• 42:31 - Closing advice: you're in the driver's seatHelpful Links:• Connect with Frank on LinkedIn• Listen to Monk• Sunshine Shop—Thanks for listening! Derrick and Jeff share a serious update: Derrick shares his story behind being diagnosed with prostate cancer back in May, which will put the show on another hiatus after two remaining episodes (June 16 and June 23). Derrick explains his history of prostatitis and family risk, a PSA spike, biopsy and cystoscopy results, and a PET scan showing no spread; doctors believe it was caught early. He chose surgery scheduled for July 2, discusses recovery expectations (including a week with a catheter and significant activity restrictions), and says July will likely be off while they reassess in August. They emphasize the importance of getting checked, and thank supporters.

Jack explains that "Morning Coffee" is going on a hiatus and explains his reasonings.
After 122 episodes covering SaaS metrics, GTM analytics, and the evolving world of AI-native software, Dave "CAC" Kellogg and Ray "Growth" Rike announce that The Metrics Brothers podcast is going on hiatus. In this abbreviated special episode, Ray and Dave reflect on what made the show work, what made it hard, and why now is the right time to take a pause. They share their top-performing episodes across 122 weeks, including the all-time most-listened episode on NRR, a breakout episode on pipeline generation, and the Intercom AI transformation episode that set a record for first-week downloads. They also explain the primary driver behind the break: AI changed the subject matter faster than their accumulated operator experience could keep up. What started as two veterans trading war stories about metrics they had lived with for decades became something that required more prep, more research, and more time to do with the quality they demanded. Both hosts decided they would rather spend more time inside AI from an operator's perspective to gain real-life AI experience, then return with better stories to tell.Ray shares his plans to accelerate the AI to ROI podcast and newsletter, expand AI benchmarking initiatives with partners including Scale Ventures, and build out advisory services for companies trying to measure and justify AI business impact. Dave will be putting more time into Kellblog, deepening his work with the Balderton Capital portfolio and his advisory clients. The Metrics Brothers consistently ranked in the Top 25-50 on Apple Podcasts in the Business Management category. All 122 episodes remain available in the archive.Listeners with feedback or ideas for what comes next can reach the Metrics Brothers at metricsbros@benchmarkit.ai.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Episode 303 we're shouting out Colorado, Denver! 303 Area Code baby! Terrell is a big broncos fan so hopefully this one is special with the Bros as they're back fresh off Mother's Day weekend. We open with the weekend recap of course before starting Rick Ross and French Montana's recent VERZUZ concert where after Rick Ross seems to be backpedaling on beef with Drake. Next the Bros give thoughts on Chris Brown's new album “BROWN”. The Bros discuss their 2 hour review as well as give thoughts on the project and how artists can keep fans excited. They talk about the recent HANTAVIRUS outbreak that's very close to home, Terrance's live basketball tweet makes him have to eat words in real time before discussing the Washington Wizards getting the number 1 pick in the upcoming draft. Terrance thinks this means DC sports is making a turnaround. There's a great topic about Witnessing Harrassment in the workplace. Both Terrance and Terrell give advice and experiences on how they dealt with witnessing harassment and being in a vulnerable position with a decision to make. Next, they discuss TV Shows returning years later and what the “TIME JUMP” does to the watching experience, Rihanna and Tyla's drama ends up becoming a DEBATE, Latto is retiring from Rap and there's a streamer doing everything he can to rage-bait black folks into a reaction.. but this says something about Rage-Bait culture. Lastly, The Bros talk about Drakes ICEMAN album coming this weekend and expectations for what's to come for the Birthday weekend. Follow Us on Twitter @MalloryBros9 for all updates! SEASON 4 EPISODE 84: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (3:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: Back from a week off just in time to put the podcast on health hiatus...details within today's supersized edition. Plus, befitting the time off, some meta pictures on how Democrats should plan for what they want this country to look like on its 300th anniversary, if it lasts that long. Will we have jailed Trump and gotten back the money he took? Undone his damage? Eliminated the anachronistic idea that Wyoming should have as many senators as California? Let the Supreme Court continue to lie, cheat and steal the democracy from under us? As John Candy said in "Splash": Think big, be big, my friend. MORE IMMEDIATELY: Whaddya mean the Governor of Virginia hasn't been BRIEFED on the way to overturn her state's Supreme Court's usurpation of redistricting? Why the hell not Hakeem Jeffries? Anybody notice Trump is simply rotating the same three lies about Iran? Why are only independent journalists like Garrett Graff still covering the WHCD non-shooting when the New York Times is doing 31 paragraphs on the future of the dinner like anybody gave a crap? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: stop saying Trump is painting everything GOLD. That color is not GOLD. It is the color of WEE WEE. Say it. Use the clinical terms, use the gutter terms. The gutter terms define this idiot president. Stop saying gold when you mean whizzzzzzzzzzzzzz. B-Block (56:00) ON THE PASSING OF TED TURNER: Hard to believe few of the obituaries mentioned how he also invented 7-day-a-week sports on national television. Or how Jane Fonda kept him from destroying himself in, like, 1982. One particularly harrowing saga had him telling the lowest ranking staffer at CNN's Washington Bureau which way, when he finally decided he'd do it, he'd do it. And this is said with admiration and affection for the man who created the place where I and so many of the figures of the last 45 years began our TV careers. C-Block (1:30:00) ALL TED ALL THE TIME: I was holding back until I was certain I wouldn't jinx him. My beloved first rescue dog, Ted, was up against it last fall. I took him to the University of Florida for life-saving open heart surgery and boy, did they! Eight hours on the table, eight hours of SICU, all for an eight pound dog and now - he's not even on any medications! It's a long story and I would insist it's worth hearing it. And if you have a dog (or know of one) moving from Mitral Valve Disease to Heart Failure, maybe this will provide you with hope - and an option.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
