Join us for the final installment of One True Book Club '26! In this series of episodes, we are reading the Hemingway-relevant selection, Under Fire by Henri Barbusse, the classic French WWI novel published in 1916.This episode covers the final chapters of the novel. We discuss how Barbusse balances graphic, grotesque depictions of the dead with artistic restraint; we analyze anti-war themes throughout this section, including Corporal Bertrand's powerful speech; and we reflect on the "ray of light" symbolism at the end of the book.Throughout the discussion, we connect our reading to other works by Hemingway: “Chapter X” of In Our Time [They whack-whacked the horse…], A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Men at War, “A Natural History of the Dead," and “Soldier's Home.” We also draw connections to other non-Hemingway works, among them J'accuse (dir. Abel Gance), Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage, Bob Dylan's “Blowin' in the Wind,” Joseph Heller's Catch-22, Siegfried Sassoon's Memoirs of an Infantry Officer, and Saving Private Ryan (dir. Steven Spielberg). We are using the Penguin Classics edition with an Introduction written by Professor Jay Winter. In the second half of this episode, Winter kindly sits down with us to share his wisdom about this spectacular book!Thank you for listening to One True Podcast! In Part 7 of Foretold: Australia's Whiskey Au Go Go Fire, we examine the decades of controversy that followed the convictions of John Andrew Stuart and James Finch. As allegations of police corruption, questionable confessions, and organized crime connections emerge, the case becomes far more complicated than it first appeared. From the landmark Fitzgerald Inquiry to the shocking McCulkin family murders, we explore why many began to question not only whether justice was served—but whether the full truth had ever been uncovered. As public opinion shifts and new evidence comes to light, the stage is set for the explosive final chapter of one of Australia's most infamous criminal cases. Episode 119 John Stuart and James Finch finally stand trial for the Whiskey Au Go Go firebombing—but this is no ordinary murder trial. As prosecutors build their case around disputed confessions, jailhouse informants, and weeks of alleged extortion threats, Stuart repeatedly sabotages the proceedings by swallowing homemade spring-loaded wire devices that send him into emergency surgery. Eventually barred from attending his own trial, Stuart dismisses his lawyer, forcing the court into the extraordinary position of conducting part of the proceedings in his hospital room. This episode explores the bizarre courtroom drama that followed, the witnesses whose credibility would be questioned for decades, and the evidence that convinced a jury to convict both men. But the story doesn't end with the verdict. From rooftop prison protests and repeated acts of self-harm to lingering allegations of fabricated confessions and unanswered questions about Stuart's death, the controversy surrounding Australia's "crime of the century" only deepens. And with another confession, a kidnapping, and fresh challenges to the convictions still ahead, the Whiskey Au Go Go saga isn't over yet.  Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. If you'd like a much deeper dive into the case, we highly recommend the book. As always, keep your exits clear and your fire escapes free of storage.

Episode 118 In Part 5 of our Whiskey Au Go Go series, the investigation takes a dramatic turn when John Stuart's own brother, Danny, decides to turn him in to police. Was it an attack of conscience, or was Australia's largest-ever reward too tempting to ignore? As detectives close in, a backyard barbecue descends into absolute chaos, a mysterious Englishman named "Doug" repeatedly vanishes as police take John Stuart into custody.  Then they catch his closest friend, James Richard Finch. Police say Finch confessed to carrying out the deadly firebombing after being recruited by Stuart. Finch insists the confession was fabricated. With two suspects, two wildly different stories, and allegations of police misconduct already beginning to surface, the case becomes even more complicated. By the end of the episode, investigators believe they've solved Australia's crime of the century—but decades of controversy are only just beginning. Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. We also cover his  metafictional “Swear Words” chapter, where Barbusse reflects on a Realist writer attempts to describe the indescribable. We also connect this brutal novel to Hemingway's writing, to other modernist works, to Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried… and even to The Shawshank Redemption. We are using the Penguin Classics edition with an Introduction written by future One True Podcast guest, Professor Jay Winter.

Episode 117 As the weeks leading up to the Whiskey Au Go Go fire unfold, John Stuart desperately tries to convince police, journalists, and nightclub owners that a deadly protection racket is about to erupt in Brisbane. But with his stories constantly changing, his refusal to name names, and increasingly erratic behavior, detectives are left wondering whether they're dealing with a genuine informant or a deeply paranoid career criminal. When Stuart's prediction of an empty nightclub fire comes true, the warnings become harder to ignore—but by then, time is running out. In Part 4, we follow the increasingly bizarre trail of warnings, missed opportunities, and strange coincidences that culminate in the night the Whiskey Au Go Go burned. Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. Episode 116 John Stuart spent years insisting he had been framed. Most people dismissed the claim as just another excuse from a career criminal with a long history of arrests, escapes, and bad decisions. But the attempted murder conviction that haunted Stuart's life may not have been as straightforward as it appeared. In Part 3 of our Whiskey Au Go Go series, we examine the 1965 shooting of Sydney underworld figure Jacky Steele, the conviction that transformed Stuart into a deeply paranoid man, and the conspiracy he believed followed him for the rest of his life. Along the way, Stuart develops an obsession with alibis, begins documenting his movements through postcards, befriends one of Queensland's most respected detectives, and repeatedly warns nightclub owners about the growing threat of protection rackets. As Brisbane's criminal underworld collides with allegations of police corruption, organized crime, and extortion, Stuart finds himself once again at the center of the story. The question is whether he's a whistleblower, a criminal opportunist, or something in between. Because when the Whiskey Au Go Go burns, investigators will discover that John Stuart had been warning people for months that a nightclub was going to be firebombed. The problem is that John Stuart was also the man they suspected of setting the fire. Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. Episode 115 In Part 2 of our Whiskey Au Go Go series, we leave the nightclub behind and turn our attention to the man who would become the central figure in the investigation: John Andrew Joshua Stuart. Long before the Whiskey Au Go Go fire claimed 15 lives, Stuart was already well known to police, journalists, and much of Brisbane's criminal underworld. Raised in a home marked by violence, poverty, and abuse, Stuart's life became a revolving door of arrests, reform schools, mental institutions, prison escapes, and newspaper headlines. This week, we follow Stuart's journey from troubled child to notorious criminal, exploring the brutal conditions at Westbrook Farm Home for Boys, his involvement in Australia's bodgie and widgie subculture, his repeated clashes with police, and his growing reputation as a man who always seemed to be at the center of the action. We also examine Stuart's unusual relationship with Sunday Truth reporter Brian "The Eagle" Bolton, a connection that transformed Stuart from an ordinary criminal into something far more influential: a source. Time and again, Stuart appeared to possess insider knowledge of crimes, escape plots, and events before they occurred. Sometimes he warned people. Sometimes he claimed no one listened. As police would later discover, that pattern would become impossible to ignore. Because years before the Whiskey Au Go Go burned, John Stuart had already established himself as a man who seemed to know things before they happened—and a man who desperately wanted people to pay attention. Sources for this episode include Geoff Plunkett's excellent book, The Whiskey Au Go Go Massacre: Murder, Arson and the Crime of the Century, along with contemporary reporting and historical records. One True Podcast does its part to help your summer reading lists by covering a book that is not by Hemingway, but is Hemingway-relevant: Henri Barbusse's Under Fire, the 1916 World War I novel that Frederic Henry and Count Greffi name-drop so provocatively in between sips of icy cold champagne and smoothly fluent billiards shots. This episode covers the first nine chapters of Under Fire, where we discuss why Hemingway damned this novel with such faint praise in his Men at War anthology, how the episodic structure might remind readers of a contemporary work like The Things They Carried, the absence of instantly recognizable characters, and – controversially – whether there's more rain in this novel or in A Farewell to Arms. One True Podcast is never one to shy away from the divisive topics. We hope you'll join us in this summer's long-overdue read of Under Fire. We are using the Penguin Classics edition with an Introduction written by future One True Podcast guest, Professor Jay Winter.
