It's movie night in the clubhouse this week, as we take a look at the 1983 TV movie Quarterback Princess - and are thoroughly charmed by it. The original '80s Sweet Valley vibes are strong with this one, as Canadian teenager Tami Maida - played by Helen Hunt – spends a term at an American high school and becomes their star quarterback. We expected clichés, but instead we got a surprisingly warm, naturalistic depiction of a girl who defies convention and is celebrated for it by her lovely family and the cutest football team ever. All this and a character who basically is Jessica Wakefield! Oh, and some football stuff that went totally over our heads. If you like, you can watch the film on YouTube before hearing our recap of the whole thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCCvJx3nFI Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

This week, we're strapping on our scrunchies and doing synchronized backflips into the gloriously neon world of Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985). Join us as we relive the tale of rebellious Catholic school girls, televised dance-offs, and the eternal struggle against buzzkill parents who just don't understand the rhythm. We're talking Sarah Jessica Parker before Sex and the City, Helen Hunt in peak “my accessories are wild” form, and a plot that screams, “What if Footloose and glitter had a baby?” It's cheesy, it's chaotic, it's got choreography—and yes, we're judging every dance move like it's 1985.Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan Boyle----Show E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com----Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Bluesky, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. The year of the stitch up has had a couple of misfires for Dave's picks, with Chris unfortunately declaring Cloud City's for both sword and sorcery adventures - Gor and The Barbarians. So this is the time to roll out the cult classic sci-fi movie from 1984, Trancers.Trancers was a low-budget sci-fi film produced by Charles Band's Empire Pictures, a company known for its B-movie output during the 1980s. Directed by Charles Band and written by Danny Bilson and Paul De Meo, the film was conceived as a time-traveling noir with a futuristic twist, inspired by Blade Runner and classic detective stories. The production had limited financial resources, so the filmmakers cleverly set much of the movie in present-day Los Angeles rather than the distant future, allowing them to save on costly futuristic sets and effects. The film starred Tim Thomerson as the grizzled, time-traveling cop Jack Deth and a young Helen Hunt in one of her early roles. Despite its modest budget, Trancers managed to craft a unique cyberpunk atmosphere using creative cinematography and neon-lit cityscapes.Empire Pictures, known for churning out cult classics, ensured the movie had a quick and efficient production, utilizing familiar locations and a mix of practical effects to bring its sci-fi elements to life. The film's pulpy, hard-boiled dialogue and time-travel premise helped it stand out in the crowded landscape of low-budget sci-fi, leading to a small but dedicated cult following. Trancers performed well enough on the home video market to spawn multiple sequels, solidifying its place in the annals of ‘80s cult cinema. The movie's mix of noir and sci-fi influences, along with Thomerson's performance, kept it alive long after its initial release, proving that even a low-budget indie film could leave a lasting impact on the genre. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world where the future is on the brink of collapse, one man must travel back in time to stop an unstoppable evil. Jack Deth is a hard-nosed cop on the hunt for Martin Whistler, a madman who turns people into mindless, murderous Trancers. But when Whistler escapes to 1985, Deth is forced to follow, leaping into the body of his own ancestor. With the help of a fiery young woman, Leena, he'll have to fight his way through an army of mind-controlled killers, stop Whistler, and save the future… before time runs out!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Join Greg Alba, Aaron Alexander, and John Humphrey as they dive into the 2004 cult classic that redefined political satire—Team America: World Police. Directed by Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park, Cannibal! Team America follows an elite, over-the-top task force of marionette operatives as they confront the world's most dangerous threats. The film features unforgettable moments like the explosive “America, F**k Yeah!” the country elegy "Freedom Isn't Free," the "Montage" song, & Kim Jong Il's showstopping "I'm So Ronery" along with the host of outrageous action sequences that blend crude comedy with sharp social commentary. The film also parodies famous actors and iconic Hollywood personas—taking playful jabs at stars such as Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, George Clooney, Danny Glover, Ethan Hawke, Helen Hunt, Samuel L Jackson, Liv Tyler, Martin Sheen, Sean Penn, Ben Affleck, Julianne Moore, and others—adding an extra layer of hilarity and cultural critique. Have you ever wondered why we are drawn to people who challenge us the most?   In this episode, I sit down with Harville and Helen Hendricks, the minds behind Imago Relationship Therapy, to explore why we unconsciously attract partners who reflect our childhood wounds. We dive into how early experiences shape our relationships, why conflict is not the problem but an opportunity, and how we can create safety and connection instead of distance and frustration.   We talk about how the brain is wired for survival, why negativity is the biggest relationship killer, and how structured dialogue can transform the way we connect. Harville and Helen share practical tools to move from blame to understanding, helping us see our differences as a strength, not a weakness. Whether you're single, in a relationship, or struggling to communicate, this episode will shift how you see love and connection.   Stick around for a conversation that challenges common myths about relationships and offers real solutions to build deeper intimacy. Plus, we discuss their new project that ensures their work will live on for future generations. If you've ever felt stuck in a relationship pattern, this is an episode you don't want to miss.   === GUEST LINKS  Instagram: @harvilleandhelen Website: harvilleandhelen.com Taplink: https://taplink.cc/harvilleandhelen === Have you watched our previous episode with my husband, Emilio? Hop in the Twister-Wagon, we're going STORM CHASING! The GBGBs review the 90's disaster movie classic, Twister (1996) starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt. You guys know that Glen Powell movie called Twisters? Well this is basically like a prequel where you find out why the Tornado is so mad.  This movie has everything: Twisters (as advertised), ROMANCE, flying cows (or maybe just the same one over and over), and an original song by Sammy Hagar-era Van Halen.    Also discussed: Ryan's brave close encounter with a tornado, how to stop a tornado, and whether or not Bill Paxton's character's pants should have blown off at the end.   Thanks for stopping by!

Happy New Year (and Happy Reading) from The Daily Poem!Born in Amherst, Massachusetts, to academic Calvinist parents, poet, author, and Native American rights activist Helen Hunt Jackson (born Helen Maria Fiske) was orphaned as a child and raised by her aunt. Jackson was sent to private schools and formed a lasting childhood friendship with Emily Dickinson. At the age of 21, Jackson married Lieutenant Edward Bissell Hunt and together they had two sons. Jackson began writing poetry only after the early deaths of her husband and both sons.Jackson published five collections of poetry, including Verses (1870) and Easter Bells (1884), as well as children's literature and travel books, often using the pseudonyms “H.H.,” “Rip van Winkle,” or “Saxe Holm.” Frequently in poor health, she moved to Colorado on her physician's recommendation and married William Sharpless Jackson there in 1875.Moved by an 1879 speech given by Chief Standing Bear, Jackson wrote A Century of Dishonor (1881), an exposé of the rampant crimes against Native Americans, which led to the founding of the Indian Rights Association. In 1884 she published Ramona, a fictionalized account of the plight of Southern California's dispossessed Mission Indians, inspired by Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.Jackson was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985.-bio via Poetry Foundation Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Happy New Year! While I know not everyone makes new year resolutions, at the end of every year I personally like to reflect on the previous year and, more importantly, correct course and find ways to succeed in the future. On this week's episode I have picked four movies in which regular people just like you and me are presented with unique opportunities and are able to seize the day. If the characters in these films can find success, so can you!First up is UHF (1989), starring Weird Al Yankovic. In UHF, George Newman (Yankovic) accepts a job as the station manager of Channel 62, a mostly forgotten UHF TV station that only broadcasts moldy reruns. Soon, Newman and his ragtag group of friends including roving reporter Pamela Finkelstein (Fran Drescher), janitor Stanley Spudowski (Michael Richards) and many others other lunatics, put together a series of original programs that appeal to viewers. While Newman's overactive imagination originally costs him his job and nearly his relationship with his girlfriend Teri (Victoria Jackson), it becomes an asset as Newman and his pals take Channel 62 to the top of the charts.Next up is The Secret of My Success (1987) starring Michael J. Fox and Helen Hunt. After his dream job in the big city falls through, Brantley Foster (Fox) is offered a job working in the mailroom of his uncle's mega-corporation. Before long, he takes over an empty office among the executives and adopted an alias, working two jobs at the same time. Things are complicated when Brantley pursues fellow executive Christy Wills (Hunt), who is sleeping with the boss (Brantley's uncle) while his wife, Brantley's Aunt Vera, can't keep her eyes (or hands) off of Brantley. Eventually, all of Brantley's hard work in the boardroom — and bedroom — pay off in this wacky comedy. My third pick is Better Off Dead (1985). After Lane Meyer's girlfriend Beth dumps him, he can barely find a reason to live. Meyer's friend Charles points out that Beth's new boyfriend Roy is an excellent skier, and if Lane could best him on the treacherous K12 course, he might be able to win her back. Meyer's twisty path to the slopes will teach him who he is, and more importantly, who is important to him. My final pick of the week is Revenge of the Nerds (1984). In this film, a group of nerds attending Adams College spend half the movie defending themselves from the jocks from Alpha Beta (who kicked the freshmen nerds out of their dorms after burning down their own frat house) but soon go on the offense after accepting who they are and celebrating their strengths… something we could all stand to do.In each of these films, regular people find themselves in unusual situations and, after looking inward, discover who they are and what they are made of. I hope that in 2025 you are able to do the same. Happy New Year from all of us at the Video Store Podcast! This is a public episode. Along the way, we spend a lot of time discussing SNL movies and what makes them work, the careers of Tim Meadows and Helen Hunt (?), our love of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, song and dance numbers, Chicago locations, and the seemingly huge budget of this film. Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 76 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by AwardsWatch contributor Dan Bayer to discuss the first film in their Nancy Meyers series, What Women Want (2000). Following up her success of The Parent Trap, Nancy Meyers' second feature film follows an chauvinistic advertising executive who gains the ability to hear the inner thoughts of women, truly finding out what women want. A simple, amusing premise formed into the biggest box office hit of the director's career, with stars Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt lighting up the screen together. But over two decades later, the film, while successful, has become the most divisive film of her filmography, given her lack of involvement in the film's script, leading to some of the strangest storytelling decisions you'd see in a romantic comedy. What Women Want feels like a movie stuck between eras of time where most of the jokes don't work, characters and plot devices haven't aged well, and yet the premise is still interesting enough to keep things moving; it's a fascinating film to talk about. Ryan, Jay, and Dan break down their thoughts on the film, what still works within the film and what doesn't, the message Meyer's might be saying about her own personal life, the careers of Gibson, Hunt, and Marisa Tomei, if Nick Marshall is a redeemable character, and if hearing the thoughts of a female dog makes sense. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h06m. The guys will be back next week to begin continue their series on the films of Nancy Meyers with a review of her film, Something's Gotta Give. Comedian, actor, television writer, author and musician Paul Reiser is one of Hollywood's most prolific creatives.2024 is a busy year for Reiser. On the heels of his new comedy The Problem with People which Reiser wrote, produced, and starred in alongside Colm Meaney and Jane Levy, Reiser has projects across a multitude of media formats. In March, Carter Burke, Reiser's iconic character from Aliens re-emerged in a What-if… concept comic book from Marvel comics and he appeared in the independent comedy The Gutter, directed by Isaiah and Yassir Lester. Reiser also co-wrote the New York Times bestseller What A Fool Believes: A Memoir the candid, freewheeling memoir of his friend and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Michael McDonald. In July, Reiser will appear in Netflix's Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, reprising his role from BH Cop 1 and 2. Recently, Reiser could be seen in Hulu's critically-acclaimed comedy series “Reboot” by Modern Family creator Steve Levitan. He also took his first step into bloody, superhero glory in Season 3 of Amazon Prime's Emmy-nominated The Boys playing “The Legend.” Reiser is widely celebrated for his roles in two hit shows for Netflix: Stranger Thing  and Chuck Lorre's The Kominsky Method, for which he received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Mad About You, the long-running Emmy, Peabody, and Golden Globe-winning comedy that Reiser created and starred in with Helen Hunt, returned as a limited series on Spectrum Originals. Reiser earned acclaim for his supporting role in the Academy Award-winning film Whiplash. The veteran actor has garnered praise for notable performances in films such as Diner, Bye Bye Love, One Night At McCool's, and The Thing About My Folks, which Reiser wrote for his co-star Peter Falk. Reiser is a fixture behind the camera as well. He co-created and produced the seven-episode series There's Johnny!, a seven-episode series which streamed on Hulu and Peacock.
