Episode 10: Opportunities to Rejigger Your Business Model

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 8, 2021 26:52

In Episode 10 I speak to 2 small business owners in Texas who are using the disruption of Covid to rejigger their business models - in two completely opposite ways.    Our first guest - from Episode 4: Disruptions In The Supply Chain -  is our Austin Mr. Fix It, Matt McCorkle of Handyman Matt who has downsized his  operations for good. And our second guest, new business owner Justin Limburg of Stone Bros Pizza in San Antonio was a long time chef, laid off by the pandemic, who used this moment as the opportunity to hang his shingle and gain control over life's ups and downs by bringing pizza to the masses.  If there is a silver lining to Covid, it's that it taught us what's most valuable to all of us individually…  we all got a moment to look inside and ask, what do I want most and how do I shift my operating model to accomplish that and not just let my business run me instead.
First up is Matt McCorkle with Handyman Matt, a handyman turned General Contractor who's realized when he had it all that maybe he'd actually had his fill - and he made a choice to downsize his business back to being a one-man-operation. He's lived through the boom and although there is money to be made, he's decided he's not going back into the mindset that being a bigger business is necessarily better. This episode of Emerging Texas Strong is sponsored by Texas Mutual Insurance Company, a leading worker's comp provider in Texas, and is a production of Earnest Media.  If you are interested in sponsoring a heartful podcast focused on the journey of Texas business owners for a focused market audience email, contact@EmergingTexassStrong.com

I'm going to ask you the elephant in the room question right now; do you still love running your business? And if not, do you have an Exit Strategy? Exit Strategy is one of those things we small & medium size business owners may not have thought about before. But life happens. It could be a Pandemic, a shift in life-goals, a health issue, or just a good old-fashioned retirement - but it at some point you'll need to ask, “What do I do with what I've built? Does it have a cash-out value? And does that value match the price tag someone else is be willing to pay for it? We ask this question because whether or not we have any intention to leave our company - THIS single exercise - of planning for an exit can actually ensure that you come out of 2021 stronger, make running your business easier, set you up for being able to sell in the future or just put you back into more of a flow state for when we return to business as usual.
