Melissa Kalicin combined two lifelong passions — for sailing and the environment — with an adventurous entrepreneurial spirit to launch Oceanum Vela. The startup, which Kalicin runs from her houseboat in Kittery, ME, takes used sails from iconic racing boats that were destined for the landfill and repurposes them into handbags and other products.
Dr. Maddy Orr is the founder and co-director of The Sport Ecology Group, an innovative nonprofit that makes the growing amount of sport-sustainability academic research digestible by sport-sustainability professionals. She is also a professor of sport management at SUNY Cortland. Maddy specializes in climate vulnerability research and has authored over a dozen studies on climate vulnerability in the sport sector, and adaptation measures that can be taken by sport participants and sport managers.
Dr. Allen Hershkowitz is the Godfather of the Green-Sports movement. Over the past 15+ years, Hershkowitz has helped sports teams, leagues and governing bodies make real reductions in their environmental impacts. In the inaugural GreenSportsPod episode, Hershkowitz shares the history of the Green-Sports movement and his part in it, from his work with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004 to his current role as Environmental Science Advisor to the New York Yankees.
