Su padre, García el Temblón, murió hacia el año 1004 y la regencia quedó en manos de su madre, Jimena Fernández, y de su abuela Urraca, dos mujeres de considerable peso político. Cuando el joven empezó a gobernar por sí mismo el califato de Córdoba estaba en plena guerra civil, de modo que pudo dedicar buena parte de sus energías a intervenir en los reinos y condados vecinos. Su instrumento favorito no fue la espada, sino el lecho nupcial. En el año 1010 se casó con Muniadona, hija de Sancho García, conde de Castilla. Cuando en el año 1029 el heredero de Castilla fue asesinado en León por los Vela, los derechos del condado recayeron en la casa de Pamplona. Sancho ocupó el condado, castigó a los culpables y colocó al frente a su hijo Fernando, que era todavía un adolescente. En 1032 remató la jugada con una doble boda que emparejaba a dos hijos suyos con dos hermanos leoneses. Entre 1033 y 1034 sus tropas entraron en Astorga y en la propia León, y Bermudo III tuvo que replegarse a Galicia. Al este absorbió Ribagorza y Sobrarbe aprovechando varias crisis dinásticas, arbitró entre los condes catalanes y ejerció una hegemonía un tanto difusa sobre Gascuña. En 1034 controlaba, directa o indirectamente, media España cristiana sin haber conquistado prácticamente nada a los musulmanes. Era tan poderoso que algunos cronistas se referían a él como rey de las Españas. Entretanto envió al monje Paterno a Cluny, implantó los usos benedictinos en San Juan de la Peña y Leyre, refundó el monasterio de Oña, restauró la sede episcopal de Palencia y consolidó el Camino de Santiago como arteria de comunicación con el resto de Europa. Murió poco después, en 1035, pero repartió sus dominios entre sus cuatro hijos bajo la jefatura del mayor, que se quedó el de Pamplona. El plan no duró mucho. Fernando venció a Bermudo III en la batalla de Tamarón y se hizo proclamar rey de León. A la vuelta de unos años Pamplona se la repartirían entre la emergente Castilla y el emergente Aragón. Se exige tanto porque en sus manos tienen un tesoro muy grande que no puede ser confiado a cualquier persona. Recemos para que todos los sacerdotes sean fieles hasta el final de su vida.

Hace un par de semanas recibí la llamada de Pedro Sardina, presidente del jurado del Premio Internacional de Comunicación Náutica, en la que me anunciaba que este año era el elegido para recibir este galardón, lo que ha supuesto para mí un honor enorme y también una emoción profunda. Lo recibo en el contexto del Trofeo de la Reina, acompañado de muchos amigos y compañeros del mundo de la vela. Es por ello que quiero dar las gracias al Real Club Náutico de Valencia, al jurado y a todas las personas que han pensado que mi nombre merecía estar en un palmarés al lado del propio Pedro, Enric Curt, Miguel Ángel Roselló, Josep Margalef, Carlo Borlenghi, Nico Martínez y María Muiña. Sí, son ya más de 35 años dedicados a este deporte y a este mundo que tanto me ha dado. Quién me lo iba a decir cuando comencé en mi casa, en Palamós y en la Christmas Race, primero yendo de niño y luego ya para cubrirla como informador. He tenido la suerte de vivir la vela desde muchos lugares: como periodista, como responsable de comunicación, desde unos Juegos Olímpicos a la Copa América, hasta una regata de club o una conversación a pie de pantalán. Y en todos esos escenarios he aprendido lo mismo: que la náutica no solo se cuenta, también se siente. Este premio no es solo mío. Es de toda la gente que me ha acompañado en el camino: regatistas, clubes, organizadores, compañeros, lectores, oyentes y amigos. Y, por supuesto, también de Tripulante18, que nació precisamente para seguir contando este deporte al que tanto queremos. Gracias de corazón. AAD Miércoles 8 Julio: Hoy hablamos del proyecto ‘Navegación Biológica a Vela en el Océano Global (PHYSALIA)’, dirigido por José Luis Acuña (Universidad de Oviedo) y Fernando González Taboada (COG-IEO-CSIC), que busca comprender mejor la biología y el comportamiento de la carabela, así como predecir sus llegadas. En el proyecto también participan el BIOPARC Acuario de Gijón, la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), y el Instituto de Ciencias Marinas de Andalucía (ICMAN).> Intervienen Rafael González Quirós, director del Centro Oceanográfico de Gijón (IEO-CSIC) Fernando González Taboada, investigador del Centro Oceanográfico de Gijón (IEO-CSIC) y Gemma Capeans, investigadora en el departamento de Biología de Organismos y Sistemas de la Universidad de Oviedo. La cinquena edició de la Regata d'embarcacions clàssiques del Port de Sitges s'allargarà tot el cap de setmana amb sortides a mar tots els migdies des de divendres fins diumenge per fer el recorregut Port-Terramar passant pel Baluard. Abans i després les dinou embarcacions participants es podran veure amarrades al Port, la més antiga és del 1926 i la més moderna del 1974 i totes es troben entre els 7 i 18 metres d'eslora. N'hem parlat amb el capità del Port de Sitges, David Vellet. L'entrada La Regata Sitges Vela Clàssica traurà a mar 19 embarcacions d’entre el 1929 i 1974 ha aparegut primer a Radio Maricel.

The tale of Jason and the Argonauts is one of the biggest and boldest stories in Greek mythology. And it involves some of the greatest heroes, many of whom are depicted in the stars – from the twins of Gemini to mighty Hercules. The boat itself was placed in the stars as well. But even it was too big. Astronomers eventually split it apart. The original constellation was Argo Navis. It was first drawn almost 3,000 years ago. It was far larger than any of the other ancient western constellations. And for a long time, that was just fine. But as astronomers began studying the stars with telescopes, the Argo was just too big – there were too many stars and other objects within its borders to catalog. In 1756, French astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille decided to do something about it. He split the Argo apart. He kept the references to the boat, though. So his new constellations were Carina, the keel; Vela, the sail; and Puppis, the poop deck – the deck at the back of the boat. And those constellations are still in use today. Carina is best known for its brightest star, Canopus. It’s the second-brightest star in the night sky. And from the southern latitudes of the United States, it crawls low across the south in early evening at this time of year. As night falls, it’s just above the horizon, almost directly below Sirius, the brightest nighttime star. We’ll have more about Canopus tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield
