In this episode of Bean There Done That, host Phil Di Bella sits down with Larry Prosser, Executive Director of Beyond Payments, to unpack the Reserve Bank of Australia's proposed ban on card surcharges. They break down what this policy really means for consumers, merchants, and banks—and why the supposed “savings” for customers might actually backfire. Larry explains how surcharges evolved, why compliance matters, and the hidden costs bundled into merchant fees. Phil pushes the conversation into real-world territory: shrinking café margins, the politics behind RBA decisions, and the practical steps small businesses must take now. It's an eye-opening look into the payments industry, packed with insights every business owner and everyday consumer needs to hear. Key Topics and Themes The history of surcharging and RBA policy shifts Why banning surcharges may increase prices instead of lowering them The impact of shrinking café and hospitality profit margins How banks and POS providers bundle hidden fees into merchant services The ethical approach Beyond Payments takes with transparency and compliance The bigger picture: industry bodies, political motives, and small business survival About Our Guest Larry Prosser is the Executive Director of Beyond Payments, Australia's first fully compliant “fee-less” EFTPOS provider. Since 2013, Beyond Payments has helped thousands of merchants recover 100% of their merchant service fees through transparent and compliant surcharge mechanisms. Larry is a passionate advocate for small business, pushing for fairness, compliance, and practical solutions in the payments space. More at: beyondpayments.com.au Key Takeaways The RBA's proposed ban on surcharges may sound good for consumers but will likely push prices up across cafés and restaurants. Merchant fees are not “free”—bundled POS solutions often hide costs in other ways. Debit card fees remain one of the most unfair charges facing consumers today. Transparency, compliance, and constant vigilance are essential for small businesses when choosing merchant service providers. Small business survival depends on understanding merchant fees and demanding fairness from banks and fintechs. Episode 242 is about putting ploughs into the ground, how the rural areas of much of the country was experiencing something of an agricultural revolution. It's rather a fascinating tale, because there are tremendous contradictions in what we're going to talk about this episode. As usual, there we will need to combine a global story with our local story —without doing so would be to stunt our awareness of the strands and tendrils that spread and connect. By the 1850s, Great Britain was manipulating trade and military as well as political power as reciprocating elements. This is a technique adopted by pretty much every empire since before Carthage. Political influence was used so as to extend and secure free exchange, in Britain's case commerce and anglicisation, spread political influence and welded alliances. As Lord Palmerston so aptly pointed out “…It is the business of Government to open and secure the roads for the Merchant…” Antiquated regimes were its enemy and foreign tariffs were its enemy, as anyone knows, the greatest enemy of free trade are tariffs. Empires were broken, the gouty and outdated Chinese, the religion-strangled Turkey, innumerable sheikdoms, sultanates and chieftancies were drawn into the invisible British empire of informal sway. When merchants manage affairs instead of men with guns, it's harder to pin down the essence of power — and also the dangers. The results of this grand vision were not encouraging by the 1870s and the Victorians were less sure of their panacea for both Asia and Africa. Among the ancient and invincibly conservative Confucian and Islamic rulers, no effective westernising collaborators had been found. The Tai'ping rebellion in China and the growing chaos in Muslim states appeared never ending. It was the United States that was gobbling up immigrants — most of Britain's emigrants went there, and the Victorians bought and sold more there than in any other single country. It had dawned on the British political elite that their commerical experience impressed a single portentous fact — that their most successful trading associations with the exception of the Indian Empire, were with Europeans transplanted abroad. They accounted for around 70 percent of all her investment overseas. The white communities in the temperate zones had the outlook and the institutions favourable to progress which the Asiatics and Africans seemed to lack. They offered customers with European tastes and money to spend. Mutual self-interest with whites of their empire meant private business of Great Britain commingled freely with that of Greater Britain and the once-colonial societies of the New World — the Americans and many in South America too. At the same time, the colonists were growing more bitter about Downing Street control and self-government appeared one solution. The aim was to avert the loss of more colonies and more American Wars of independence. So by the 1870s, confederated Canada, responsibly governed Australia and the Cape were regarded as constitutional embodiments of collaboration between British and colonial interests — all working at their best. The number of trading stores in the Transkei quadrupled to a few hundred, and all of this meant that there was a major qualitative shift in the cumsumption patterns of Africans. New permanent wants replaced needs, metal was now preferred to traditionally crafted pots and baskets, the cow-hide kaross was replaced by the Witney blanket, ploughs and all manner of tools flooded into these developing farms. Around South Africa, energy seemed to be surging. Take the highveld for example. The sour veld of the Harrismith district to be precise. Largely used for summer grazing, the farmers here often moved their herds into Natal every autumn. Below the Berg as they put, OnderBerg. Underberg.

In this episode we're discussing Blood in the Machine by Brian Merchant, published in 2023 by Little, Brown and Company. Blood in the Machine is an account of the Luddite rebellion in early 19th century England. Merchant's engaging study draws parallels between this account and contemporary questions about the effects of automation, big tech and AI, as well as efforts to resist and challenge the degradation of working conditions and society in general. ---------------------------------------------------------------We have now fully decamped from Twitter, but you can keep in touch with the podcast our email abcwithdannyandjim@gmail.com, and our Substack https://abcwithdannyandjim.substack.com/. We dig into the perfectionist/overthinker paradox, learning poise by studying goalies like Logan McNaney, and practical reset routines (yes, even the blink-and-wipe “hard drive” trick). Tyler walks through his Florida-to-boarding-school journey, a reclass year, committing to Catholic, transferring to Stevenson, and what D3 vs. D1 really feels like from the crease. We also hit leadership when your team turns over captains, staying locked in during quiet stretches, drills for feet and balance (walk your arc, tennis-ball footwork), stick talk (Eclipse III + ghost pocket), stringing heads, and using ADHD as a superpower for film and reps. On this episode, Proof of Play's ICO Beast and former Coinbase Ventures investor Ryan Yi unpack why “exploring” is the operative word, how policy (the Clarity Act) could shape the rollout, and what a points-driven airdrop might look like. Today, on Karl and Crew, we kicked off our weekly theme of “Back to School” with some of the professors from the Moody Bible Institute (MBI). We had Dr. Jim Coakley join us to talk about Hermeneutics, the study of interpreting the Bible. Dr. Coakley is a professor of Bible at MBI and a current elder with the 180 Chicago church. He is also a member of the Evangelical Theological Society. He has several publications and books, including “14 Fresh Ways to Enjoy the Bible.” We also had Dr. Sanjay Merchant join us to break down the divinity of the Trinity. Dr. Merchant is a former atheist turned believer and professor of Theology at MBI. He also teaches Apologetics and Philosophy and has three Master’s degrees in Apologetics, Philosophy, and Theology, and a doctorate that focuses on the Trinity. We then turned to the phone lines to ask the question, "What did God help you to see most clearly, that you couldn't see before?" We then had a conversation about how turning to the Lord brings clarity and understanding and “removes the veil”. We see this in 2 Corinthians 3:12-17, where it talks about the veil being a covering over the mind of those who are without Christ and how it is only removed when we turn to Him. We then had Sydney Swenson join us to share about the upcoming admissions event, “Experience Moody.” Sydney is the Admissions Operations Manager for MBI in Chicago. She organizes all of the campus visits and “Experience Moody” events, and the next one is September 26, 2025. You can hear the highlights of today's program on the Karl and Crew Showcast. Welcome back to Behind Greatness. We sit down with Dr. Ken Atchity at his home in California. Ken started his adult life on an academic stream and he eventually became what he personally dreaded: a tenured professor. But, shortly after his tenure-ship, he decided to breakup with his career and start anew. Already an author, Ken decided to write screenplays and produce films – not ever looking back for over 30 years. as been producing films since 1996. We talk about his thoughts on competition, creativity and what it hinges on, doing great work in isolation and how he turned around his accountant dad to seeing the freedom and beauty in insecurity. We talk staring at fire and mountains, dying by committee, the perfection of Dante's Divine Comedy, chopping wood – and the Rose Café. Seeing the David before carving it. Go back in time to see our early episodes with like-minded luminaries who embrace Ken's philosophy: Kenneth Oppal (ep 106), Mike Narducci (ep 24), Steve Litchman (ep 36), Matt Larochelle (ep 30) and Tim Kring (ep 52). Timon leaves Athens with his curses, strips himself bare and goes into the wilderness. As hunger sets in, he digs for a root to eat and discovers a pile of gold hidden underground. Apemantus finds Timon lamenting his fate and scolds him for being an undeserving misanthrope, telling him to come back to Athens. Timon refuses, setting off an argument between them. Apemantus finally leaves Timon and returns to Athens, where the citizens are growing increasingly unruly over the high taxes and prices they're paying as Alcibiades launches his offensive against the city. When Apemantus announces that he's found Timon with a trove of coins, the Artist, the Painter and the Senators head for the hills to get some of Timon's gold. I got the idea for this episode talking to a bartender in Prague. The place was empty, and the fellow was garrulous and quickly said he loved American history, which naturally prompted me to suggest a podcast where he could find some. The barkeep called my bluff – “did I know who Augustine Herrman was?” Uh, noooo. It turns out he was a Bohemian – now we would say Czech – from Prague who became one of the wealthiest and most influential men in mid-17th century English and Dutch America, particularly in New Netherland and Maryland. He would live and trade in the early colonies for more than 40 years before his death in Maryland in 1686, and such diverse characters as Pieter Stuyvesant and Lord Baltimore would rely on him for their most sensitive diplomatic matters. Most famously, Herrman would draw the most detailed map of the Chesapeake Bay, at a time when maps were evidence in the settling of disputes between empires. Hermann's map would, among other things, determine the border between Virginia and Maryland on the Eastern Shore, and – through twists and turns – play a role in the establishment of the colony of Delaware. The Czechs are understandably proud of Augustine Herrman, so in gratitude to that bartender and his surprising knowledge of 17th century America, this episode is about Herrman, through the story of his map.
