In Wahpeton, there is a regal-looking house built for Ellen Seely by renowned architect Eugene Schuler. Mrs. Seely came to town in 1881 to establish residency for a divorce in the Dakota Territory. Known locally as "Madame Seely," she was a Rockefeller in-law and an opera devotee. Her son, W.A. Seely, had arrived in Wahpeton earlier and prospered. To help pass the time, he built the Seely Opera House downtown. On this date in 1885, Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice had a successful run there.

fWotD Episode 2932: Merchant's House Museum Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 15 May 2025, is Merchant's House Museum. The Merchant's House Museum, also known as the Old Merchant's House and the Seabury Tredwell House, is a historic house museum at 29 East Fourth Street in the NoHo neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City, United States. Built by the hatter Joseph Brewster between 1831 and 1832, the edifice is a four-story building with a Federal-style brick facade and a Greek Revival interior. It was the Tredwell family's residence for almost a century before becoming a museum in 1936. The Merchant's House Museum is the only 19th-century residence in Manhattan with its original exterior and interior intact.Brewster built the house as a speculative development, selling it in 1835 to the merchant Seabury Tredwell, who lived there with his family and servants. The structure remained in the family until the death of the youngest child, Gertrude, in 1933. George Chapman, a distant relative, purchased the building and transformed it into a museum. Over the next three decades, the museum's operators struggled to obtain funds to restore the deteriorating house. The architect Joseph Roberto completely renovated the building from 1970 to 1980, and the museum underwent further restoration in the early 1990s after the demolition of nearby buildings damaged it. During the 2010s and 2020s, museum officials protested the construction of a nearby hotel because of concerns that the project would further damage the house. The Merchant's House Museum has a raised basement, a front doorway accessed by a stoop, a slate roof, and a rear garden. The interior consists of a family room and kitchen in the basement; two parlors on the first floor; and bedrooms on the upper floors. The museum's collection has over 4,500 items owned by the Tredwell family, including pieces of furniture, clothing, household items, and personal items. The museum also hosts various performances and events, and it operates tours and educational programs. Reviewers have praised both the museum's exhibits and the architecture. The building's facade and interior are New York City designated landmarks, and the building is a National Historic Landmark. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:01 UTC on Thursday, 15 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Merchant's House Museum on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Arthur.

“The Merchant of Death is Dead!” That was the headline for an obituary that may have caused Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, to make a course correction in his life. But the newspaper made a mistake—Alfred was very much alive. It was his brother Ludvig who had died. When Alfred realized he’d be remembered for a dangerous invention that claimed many lives, he decided to donate most of his significant wealth to establishing an award for those who had benefitted humanity. It became known as the Nobel Prize. More than two thousand years earlier, another powerful man had a change of heart. Manasseh, king of Judah, rebelled against God. As a result, he was taken captive to Babylon. But “in his distress he sought the favor of the Lord,” and “when he prayed,” God “brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom” (2 Chronicles 33:12-13). Manasseh spent the rest of his rule in peace, serving God and doing his best to undo the wrongs he’d done before. “The Lord was moved” by Manasseh’s prayer (v. 13). God responds to humility. When we realize we need to make a change in the way we’re living and turn to Him, He never turns us away. He meets us with grace we don’t deserve and renews us with the self-giving love He poured out at the cross. New beginnings begin with Him.

Jamie Peck speaks with Jamie Merchant, author of the book Endgame: Economic Nationalism and Global Decline, about the current state of things. As recently as the early 2000s, technocratic elites had come to a consensus around a fully globalized neoliberalism, but the crash of 2008 touched off a shift back towards economic nationalism that nobody could've predicted (except for Marx and people who've read Marx). How did we get here, and how might we exit the ever-worsening boom and bust cycle of capitalism? The Jamies discuss. Success now demands more than technical delivery, it requires a deep understanding of market risk, community engagement, and long-term asset management. From battery storage financing to the growing importance of social license, this episode explores navigating risk, engaging communities, and why having a long-term view matters more than ever, as Australia navigates away from the traditional model of centralised coal and gas toward a more renewables centred generation stack. In this episode of Transmission, Wendel joined by Dennis Freedman, Managing Director for Australia and New Zealand at Aquila Clean Energy. Over the course of the conversation, you'll hear about:Aquila Clean Energy's approach to battery storage: Why being comfortable with merchant risk is vital and how the debt market's view on batteries is changing. The challenge of modelling batteries vs. wind and solar: Why volatility and spread are what matter for storage revenues.Australia vs. New Zealand: Comparing two very different energy systems, from hydro dominance to nodal pricing structures.Social license and misinformation: Why community engagement is becoming the biggest challenge for new projects and how developers can get it right. The future of the grid: Why replacing coal requires not just generation, but massive investment in transmission and why politics is increasingly slowing the transition.Mentioned in the episodeDennis is a member of the Clean Energy Council, if you would like to learn more about the CEC, head over to their website. "The History of the World," as described by Ezarh'had Daan Jhae'œn Amarazae, is a telling of the creation story among the Aman'haddi, or marsh Giants that inhabit the Great Dismal Moor along the southeastern borders of Cadraswé. According to the Ezarh'had Daan, he first encountered the Aman'haddi only a few days after beginning his Walk in 795, C.R. While the telling varies from speaker to speaker, the Ezarh'had Daan found this version by a warrior-griot named Ngaj'in to be the most compelling. Ngaj'in, one of the Assi-Wer rangers from the Agwó-Zos "dry-home," sang the version transcribed here as she, a young nameless Jhae'œn, and their companions, recuperated from battle in the ruins of the Aman'haddi's ancestral city. Many regale the tale of that epic battle as the more significant element of his time in the swamps, but in the years since his return to claim the Amarazae seat and face the ensuing catastrophes that befell Agwe, the Ezarh'had Daan insisted that this simple campfire song gave him the insight to survive his walk, and the strength to face what was to come. Here, the Chaugwé Theater is proud to present the first installment of "The History of the World" as originally performed by the late Ngaj'in of Agwó-Zos. Tonight, you will hear the second of nine verses, "The Night's Gentle Stillness. Please take a moment to refresh your beverages. Welcome back to Not Fintech Investment Advice, where Simon Taylor and I talk about fintech companies that we're definitely not giving investment advice on! The theme of this episode is infrastructure galore. We kick things off with Ubyx, who are essentially building the Visa for stablecoins–a network of merchants, issuers, and acquirers with a standardized incentive and legal structure that could help stablecoins finally qualify as cash equivalents. We're not yet at the Visa moment of mass merchant adoption and real interoperability pain (all pain points are still mostly theoretical), but Ubyx is betting that moment's coming fast. They're one to watch, especially if you love good nerdy whitepaper... Next up, Codex. They recently raised a seed round (with participation from Coinbase and Circle, among others) to build a layer 2 blockchain network specifically for stablecoins. Codex wants to be the sleek payments rail for stablecoins, and while “just another blockchain” fatigue is real, there's logic in going vertical. They're also pitching themselves as a liquidity hub, which, if it works, could be a major edge in reducing fragmentation. Then, there's Agent AV, which is basically Shopify for AI agents. They're tackling the wild west of agentic commerce, where bots now shop on our behalf. E-commerce was built to keep bots out—but now, humans are deploying bots on their behalf. The challenge, then, is separating the good bots (authorized agents) from the bad. That's why a two-sided mode, building for both agents and merchants, makes a lot of sense. It's early days, but they might be laying rails for a whole new kind of shopping experience. And finally, the dark horse of the episode: Experian. Yes, that Experian. They just launched a new cashflow-based credit score and, in a twist, are skipping the bottom of the data stack to go full-FICO. In an open banking world, they don't want to be the bureau—they want to be the scorer. No end-of-show manifestations on this go-around; Simon already manifested the biggest fintech nerd gathering ever, Fintech NerdCon, so Alex is manifesting an excellent inaugural NerdCon in Miami come November. 00:02:36 - UBYX 00:16:25 - Codex 00:30:05 - Agent AV 00:41:14 - Experian Newline™ by Fifth Third is an innovative, API-first platform that enables fintechs to launch embedded payment, card and deposit solutions directly with Fifth Third Bank. Episode 164Fate, as in Romeo and Juliet, plays a large part in ‘The Merchant of Venice', as do deep seated grudges, but these are more societal than familial. We are still in Italy, but no longer in close knit Verona, but mercantile and outward looking Venice. As Shakespeare wrote this play London was becoming orientated around increasing global trade and English trading ships were regularly making their way to Venice as a major trading hub, so perhaps it is no surprise that Venice, with its eyes on commerce and profit, was a suitably exotic setting for this tale of greed, love and a clash of cultures. Welcome back to the Fintech Takes podcast. I'm Alex Johnson, and as always, I'm joined by my partner-in-crime, Jason Mikula. Today, we're unpacking Klarna's public debut, the growing rift between Mercury and Evolv, and why getting wrecked might just be the best education in lending First up, the BNPL giant Klarna has finally gone public, filing an F1 as a foreign entity. Now as a public company, we'll get to see their actual numbers. With 93M active consumers, Klarna isn't small, but its path to profitability is still a question mark. The key stat? Transaction margins. Klarna's European banking license gives it an advantage in low-interest rate markets, but as it pushes deeper into the U.S., credit losses are an issue. The big question: can Klarna mature fast enough to bring those losses down? Next, we're diving into the fallout between Mercury and Evolv. Mercury has stopped onboarding customers through Evolv and is actively shifting accounts elsewhere—publicly, at that. Meanwhile, Evolv seems caught off guard for Mercury's departure, with mixed signals on whether this was a surprise or a slow-moving train wreck. So, what really happened? And what does it say about the state of fintech-banking relationships? And finally, is taking a beating the only way to master lending? We think so. The right order? Start with lending, get punched in the face by risk, and then consider a bank charter. Doing it the other way around? Painful. Avoidable. And yet...it keeps happening. Please stop! The very busy actress, Laila Robins, was recently seen in Ryan Murphy's anthology series, American Horror Stories. She also has a recurring role as Colonel Grace Mallory on the hugely popular Amazon series, The Boys. Laila starred opposite Amanda Seyfried in the Apple+ limited series, The Crowded Room and opposite Joshua Jackson and Alec Baldwin in the Hulu limited series, Dr. Death. She also recurred memorably as Katarina Rostova on the hit NBC series The Blacklist, and she had a major arc playing Pamela Milton on the final season of AMC's The Walking Dead. Among, Laila's many film appearances are: Eye in the Sky, Side Effects, Blumenthal, Concussion, The Good Shepherd, An Innocent Man, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, True Crime, and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. You may have also seen her in such TV series as: The Handmaid's Tale, Homeland, Deception, 30 Rock, So Help Me Todd, Bull, Person of Interest, Blue Bloods, Damages, In Treatment, The Sopranos, Law and Order, and the series lead in Gabriel's Fire opposite the late, legendary James Earl Jones. Laila's work on Broadway includes Heartbreak House, the Tony-nominated play Frozen, and The Real Thing, as well as Off-Broadway in: the quartet of Richard Nelson's Apple Family plays. She's also appeared around the U.S. in numerous stage performances in shows such as: The Lady from Dubuque, Antony and Cleopatra, A Midsummer's Night's Dream, Sore Throats, Tiny Alice, Mrs. Klein, The Merchant of Venice, and many productions at The Guthrie in her hometown of St. Paul/Minneapolis, including Hedda Gabler and The Lion in Winter. Over the years, I've enjoyed quite a few of Laila's on-screen performances in shows of which I'm a big fan, including everything she did in The Walking Dead, Homeland, The Blacklist and The Boys. Laila never hits a false note even when the stories in which she's acting brilliantly defy reality.Of note: Laila also happens to be married to a favorite StoryBeat guest, and someone to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude, the phenomenal actor and singer, Robert Cuccioli, who originated the roles of Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde in the musical I created with Frank Wildhorn, Jekyll & Hyde.

“Payments Performance Optimization” is a pretty broad term, and it might mean different things to different people. In a series of Payments on Fire episodes this year, Glenbrook's Drew Edmond will be talking to guests who are approaching payments optimization from a variety of different angles, with a focus on primarily online, card not present merchants. At the end of the day, a merchant wants the maximum number of good transactions to be authorized successfully. It sounds so simple. But is anything in payments really simple? In this episode, Oban MacTavish, CEO and Co-founder of Spade, joins Drew to explore this issue by focusing on merchant data, and how issuers make decisions about card transactions.
In this installment of the More with McGlinchey Podcast, Members Susan Desmond and Marcelle Mouledoux discuss the Safer Seas Act requirements for the maritime industry and review the legal obligations that Merchant Marines have regarding sexual harassment claims.

Many restaurant operators are unknowingly signing their businesses away with predatory merchant cash advances (MCAs). These high-cost financing options promise fast money but come with crippling repayment terms that can put restaurants out of business. In this episode, we break down: What MCAs really are and why they're dangerous How POS companies and third-party apps market these loans The long-term financial risks of taking an MCA What better financing options exist for restaurant operators If you're considering quick funding, listen to this episode first—you might save your business. Show Notes In this episode, we uncover the hidden risks of merchant cash advances (MCAs)—a form of financing that is marketed as fast and easy but often leads to financial ruin for restaurants. Unlike traditional loans, these cash advances are structured as purchases of future credit card receivables, making them expensive, aggressive, and difficult to escape. Many struggling restaurants turn to MCAs in times of financial distress, only to find themselves buried under exorbitant repayment terms that accelerate their path to closure. We break down why these loans are dangerous, how they differ from traditional financing, and what you should do instead. Key Takeaways What Are Merchant Cash Advances (MCAs)? MCAs aren't loans—they're structured as purchases of future credit card receivables. Funds are repaid daily, based on a percentage of your sales, often leading to crippling cash flow problems. Effective interest rates can be well over 100%, making it nearly impossible to get ahead. How Restaurants Get Trapped in MCAs MCAs target struggling restaurants with promises of fast, no-hassle funding. POS systems and third-party platforms (like DoorDash) market these loans directly to operators. The focus is on how quickly you can get the money, not on the devastating repayment structure. The Long-Term Impact of Taking an MCA Payments are automatically deducted, reducing your ability to cover operating expenses. Defaulting can trigger harsh legal and financial consequences, including personal liability. Many operators end up in a cycle of taking multiple MCAs just to stay afloat, leading to business failure. Why 2024 Is a Critical Year for Restaurants Rising costs, labor shortages, and consumer uncertainty have made it the toughest year for restaurants since early 2020. Many operators desperately seek financing, making them more vulnerable to predatory lenders. Instead of relying on expensive, short-term cash, restaurants must focus on financial planning and sustainable growth.

Ireland may have been England's first colony but, by the 17th century, Irishmen were carving out their own imperial legacies in India. Gerald Aungier, an ambitious East India Company official, saw Bombay as a new frontier for plantation and trade. Drawing from his family's plantation experience in Ireland, he laid the foundations for the establishment of the legal and economic framework that would define colonial rule in India for centuries. A hundred years later, John Nicholson, an Ulster-born soldier, became a symbol of British military might - and brutality. Known for his extreme violence during the 1857 uprising, Nicholson led savage campaigns against Indian rebels, earning both devotion from his men and horror from his enemies. His actions, once celebrated in Britain, are now remembered as some of the worst atrocities of colonial rule. At the height of the Raj, another Irishman, Lord Dufferin, presided over India as Viceroy. Deeply aware of Ireland's own history under British rule, he feared that Indian nationalism would follow the same path as Ireland's Home Rule movement. So, how did these Irishmen shape the empire that once subjugated their own people? Listen as William and Anita are once again joined by Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, author of Making Empire: Ireland, Imperialism and the Early Modern World, to uncover the contradictions of Irish imperial history. _____________ Empire UK Live Tour: The Booze & Brews live show is going on a UK tour! The Merchant's House Museum at 29 East Fourth Street in Manhattan is a relic from the past making it a treasure in New York City. The house has stood for over 180 years and seen many changes to Manhattan, but one thing that hasn't changed is its interior. It is likely the only house in New York City with a fully preserved 19th-century interior. There are those who claim this is the most haunted house in Manhattan and many of the spirits belong to the family who lived in the house for generations, the Tredwells.
