I love hearing exactly how people are carving out new ways of living—how we can evolve old systems into something new, and yet somehow ancestral at the same time.We also explore what it means to develop a kind of natural ecology of spiritual and daily practices that grow through the process of living together. If you're thinking about starting an Eco-Village, you wanna know, essentially you want to know what are the issues with soil, with air, with water, in your bio-region, in the ecological region that you live in; what are the relationships that you have with your elected officials that have the power over the area where you want to make this happen; who are your neighbors, and what kind of relationships you have with those neighbors whether they're rural, farm neighbors, or whether they're urban neighbors on your block. - Lois Arkin Lois Arkin shares her personal journey, from growing up in a close-knit, nature-filled neighborhood as a child, to moving to California with her husband, studying anthropology, and eventually finding her calling in the cooperative and intentional community movements. This led her to found the Cooperative Resources and Services Project (CRSP) in 1980, which laid the groundwork for the Eco Village LA concept. She explains how she came to the idea of creating an "eco village" - a cooperative, environmentally-focused community - after hosting public forums on different types of cooperatives. She describes the process of acquiring the first Eco Village LA building in the 1980s, and how the community has grown to encompass three buildings and a land trust over the decades. As she outlines, the key criteria that define an eco village, as outlined by early eco village pioneer Robert Gilman - includes being human-scaled, full-featured, closing the waste loop, supporting healthy human development, and being sustainable long-term. She explains how Eco Village LA aims to embody these principles, while also maintaining a diverse community in terms of income, ethnicity, gender, age, and household composition. Lois candidly shares the conflicts and challenges the community has faced over the years, including periods of intense interpersonal tensions. She describes how they eventually implemented a formal conflict resolution process, requiring members to first try to resolve issues one-on-one, and then seek mediation through a community conflict resolution committee if needed. Looking ahead, Lois talks about Eco Village LA's upcoming plans, including creating a pedestrian plaza on their main street, developing an urban farm, and continuing efforts to remove more housing in the surrounding neighborhood from the speculative real estate market. She emphasizes the broader goal of transforming the real estate industry's mindset from "maximum return on investment" to a "fair return on investment" to improve housing affordability and quality of life. — Effective Listening is an online healing community dedicated to everyone getting to thrive in this life as themselves. A truly supportive environment is essential for humans to thrive. In order to co-create a better world, we need to learn and practice the art of "Effective Listening." By learning and practicing Effective Listening, we create a supportive environment and empower each other toward self-actualization. Valeria interviews Ilya Parizhsky — He is the founder of Effective Listening, a group process that creates one on one listening partnerships for mutual healing and transformation.  He holds a Masters in Drama Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies, and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, Oregon, Colorado and Washington, DC, where he practices online couples and individual therapy. Ilya is an expert leader of personal growth workshops and group processes, and has helped thousands of people heal and overcome restrictions to their authenticity. He devotes himself to staying at the cutting edge of the healing arts. He has trained in countless therapeutic modalities, and has taken part in tens of thousands of hours of experiential workshops, and thousands of hours of individual counseling, meditation, yoga, dance and movement, theater, and other self-actualization processes. He continues to vigorously pursue both personal and professional development, and can't overstate the importance for therapists and healing professionals to do extensive amounts of both professional training and personal healing work in order to be authentically and skillfully available for others. Ilya is also adept at simplifying and boiling down the essence of complex processes. Effective Listening is the culmination of Ilya's wide-ranging experience and training, and offers an accessible synthesis of powerful personal growth techniques, borrowing from many different disciplines and modalities, but creating something truly unique. In addition to his passion for therapy and healing, Ilya is also a performance artist and stand-up comedian, where he uses his life story and experiences to bring levity, light, and laughter to subjects as deep as the nature of consciousness and the meaning of life, and as silly as multi-lingual animal sounds. Ilya is also a proud father of two young daughters. He is a devoted husband married to his best friend and favorite person on the planet. And he lives in an Ecovillage, which he finds to be an ideal environment for his children to grow up, freely roaming and playing with friends. Ilya has a deep longing and commitment to be of service, and to make the world a better place. He has developed Effective Listening as a means to that end. In his work as a psychotherapist, he is often confronted with the fact that humans need more than a therapy session once a week to thrive. We need a network of supportive skillful humans we can count on. The Effective Listening method is not therapy and is not meant to replace therapy. Effective Listening unleashes the awesome power and natural healing capacity that each of us has inside of us. It gives us a living network of people and a community of practice with whom to share and develop our dormant ability to give and receive love and build the collective resources to create a world that truly meets the needs we have. Hoppi Wimbish is a remarkable woman whose talents span the realms of sound healing, music, ceremonial artistry, natural shamanism, teaching, and sustainable living. Fourteen years ago, Hoppi and others transformed a large piece of land into an off-grid eco-village powered by hydro and solar energy. The village evolved and Hoppi developed The Lammas Earth Centre, a temple and haven for sacred work, training, teaching, crafts, and healing, seamlessly intertwining spirituality and creativity. Hoppi discusses just a fraction of the amazing things she does at The Lammas Earth Centre, including the ancient art of drum birthing and the teachings and practice of natural shamanism. Hoppi also shares details of a transformative pilgrimage to Arunachala, in Tamil Nadu, India, during which she was guided to let go of her attachment to everything in her life including her businesses and her family. Climbing this sacred mountain in India, Hoppi experienced an intense 11-day ceremony that she refers to as "The Annihilation," experiencing ego death and profound stillness. This became a catalyst for a rebirth - a newfound capacity to create, give and heal. We also hear Hoppi talk in depth about the concept of entrainment, sound healing, the power of shamanic drumming in accessing alternate states of consciousness, as well as the significance and potency of ceremonies and gatherings.   You can engage with Hoppi in the following ways:   Her websites: www.hoppiwimbush.com www.lammasearthcentre.co.uk   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hoppi.wimbush https://www.facebook.com/lammasearthcentre   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/hoppiwimbushhealing/ https://www.instagram.com/lammasearthcentre/     Follow Behind Our Eyes on Instagram: @behindoureyes333  Connect with Liane on instagram: @lianelightsup   This podcast is brought to you by www.supareal.com    If you'd like to receive email updates about this podcast and other projects, please subscribe on the SupaReal site (bottom of the page).   Don't forget to subscribe :-)

In this episode, we speak with Ian-Michael Hébert, one of the founders of Holos, a private retreat center and community specializing in holistic living and transformational experiences.    In our conversation, he discusses the genesis of Holos, their vision for a sustainable and resilient community, and the importance of focusing on reciprocity and honoring the indigenous people of the land. Ian-Michael also emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural beauty of the Diamante Valley and their commitment to stewardship.    Among other details of the community's infrastructure, he describes their design for conserving a quarter of the property while reforesting most of the already denatured zones. They also have plans for a macaw reintroduction initiative.   Ian-Michael reflects on challenges they've faced in getting set up with elements such as water management, communication breakdowns with the municipality, and bridging the gap between foreigners and locals.    As we discuss the importance of supporting the local community, paying fair wages, and engaging with local service providers, Ian-Michael affirms Holos's goal to continue reassessing their programming to focus more on community relations and neighborhood development.     Other topics we touched on include developing a clear vision, team building, project financing, and embracing the wisdom of not knowing.   I appreciate the degree to which Holos works to cultivate reciprocity with surrounding humans and the natural world. As important as it is, it can be challenging to keep such delicate subtleties at the forefront while in the development phase and when juggling the needs of investors and push-back from the municipality, but it's the path worth walking.   Setting space aside to develop housing and other infrastructure for the Costa Rican and indigenous Boruca people, who compile much of their labor force, is a significant investment. I've been happy to see this practice implemented among some of the other ecovillage projects I've been investigating, as well. It's a valuable step in honoring the needs of their workforce while holding space for the local culture and providing stability for the project.    Another element I've found attractive among the ecovillages I've been looking into is the effort to lay out a portion of the community infrastructure kept open for the use of the regional community, which is also represented in Holos's design.    Something that echoed strongly for me in this interview is that it can be difficult to handle people's projections when operating a project of this size. Gossip can be plentiful, and the most altruistically intending projects are often the easiest targets for it by those who are doing less, feeling like a project of that size should be able to do it all. I'm glad that Ian-Miachael plans to hold more events to bring the local community in to see more of what's happening there.   Another detail that stuck out for me was Ian-Michael's share of finding the right team. This topic often comes up with other landowners and entrepreneurs I work with. When looking for your team, it's essential to identify your strengths, clearly describe your needs, make a humble ask out to your community, and have patience as it comes together.   Before letting you go, I'd like to address a housekeeping detail regarding working with a team. About 2/3rds into the interview, there's a moment where I described my efforts to help with a road repair fundraiser a couple of years ago. Relistening to it, I recognize I used a lot of “I” languaging.    I feel it important to clarify that I wasn't the only member of the Diamante Bridge Collective who went to the Association meeting to learn about the pueblo's needs, nor was I the only person behind the fundraiser. I might have been the one who initiated it, but raising that much money was a multicultural community effort and a testament to the power of cooperation.   I hope your life unfolds in a continuous stream of miracles. Andrew Mystery is a Community Builder and an experiential entrepreneur. He is the Co-Founder of the Tmrw.Tday Community, a soul-development organization founded in 2017 that curates holistic experiences internationally. Currently residing in Costa Rica he is developing the Eco-Village of the future on 44-acres of land in the jungles of Nosara. As the world shifted in 2020, Andrew and his team pivoted online and presented the world's first Virtual Fest. With a rapidly growing online membership they launched the Tmrw.Tday Academy, a conscious lifestyle integration container, working with over 50 inspiring coaches, facilitators, and indigenous elders. With the desire to participate firsthand in transformation of his members, Andrew trained under Rob Starbuck learning the Conscious Connected breath technique. A very powerful practice enhanced with a sound odyssey taking the participant on a deep inner exploration of self. He now shares his practice with his members and the communities he serves. In this episode we dig into all of the above, as well as what it has been like becoming a father and going through his own personal evolution from the world of night clubs and promoting to more conscious living, loving and work.
