Originally titled Children's and Household Tales, The Complete Grimm's Fairy Tales contains the essential bedtime stories for children worldwide for the better part of two centuries. The Brothers Grimm, Jacob and Wilhelm, were German linguists and cultural researchers who gathered legendary folklore and aimed to collect the stories exactly as they heard them.
Acclaimed author Gabor Maté joins the conversation in part two of our series exploring Wilhelm von Humboldt's public education system. Maté is a former English teacher. In this episode we ask: Is Humboldt's 200-year-old system equipped to meet the challenging demands of the 21st century? And does it still reflect his ideals, especially at the university level? *This episode concludes our two-part series. It originally aired on April 16, 2024.

Success for a princely family in the Late Middle Ages has a lot to do with reproductive luck. Not having any offspring, in particular no male offspring is a bit of a knockout. But having too many sons that could be a major issue too.And in 1386 the Habsburgs struggled with exactly that problem. Their territory was already divided between an Albertine and a Leopoldine line. But then Leopold had four sons, bringing the number of archdukes of Austria to six, which is five too many.In this episode we will discuss how they managed to muck it up quite bad, in fact so bad, one of their number had to fall to his knees before the emperor, not once, not twice, but three times…Albertiner- Albrecht III (1349-1395) o Albrecht IV (1377-1404) § Albrecht V (II) (1397-1439) · Ladislaus Postumus (1440-1457)Leopoldiner- Leopold III (1351-1386) o Wilhelm (1370-1406) o Leopold IV (1371-1411) o Ernst der Eiserne (1377-1424) § Friedrich V (III) (1415-1494) § Albrecht VI (1418-1463) o Friedrich IV (1382-1439) § Siegismund der Munzreiche (1427-1496)The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Two hundred years ago, Wilhelm von Humboldt created the education system as we know it today. At the heart of his philosophy of education was the concept of Bildung — reaching one's inner potential. Yet over the years, as his public education system was adopted, Bildung may well have been the critical piece left out. *This episode is part one of two-part series. It originally aired on April 15, 2024.

Generation Gap has been on the air nearly ten years, hosted by Dorothy Wilhelm. and Ray Miller Still, Editor in Chief of The Enumclaw Courier Herald. Ray says there are only 2 Courier Herald Newspapers in the World. One is in the United States and One in Ireland. So it's been our custom to decide on the question we'll discuss for each show. Dorothy, born in 1934, is a member of the Silent Generation. The Silent Generation is generally defined as those born between 1928 and 1945. This generation grew up during the Great Depression and World War II, which significantly shaped their values and worldview. We're called Silent because we didn't make waves. We didn't protest. We had seen the Great Depression and the Great War. We just wanted peace and civic involvement. Ray is a member of the Millennials who were born between 1981 and 1996, making them approximately 29 to 44 years old in 2025. This age range is defined by the Pew Research Center and is widely accepted, although some sources may vary by a year or two. And then our newest Generation Gap member is Jason Falls. we're still working on remembering what generation he belongs to, but we think Gen z. Stand by for late breaking bulletins. This month Ray suggested that we talk about the video games that everybody is playing these days. It didn't work out too well. Ray wanted to hear about the games that Dorothy played, and she denied ever playing a game in her life. Jason was ready to dive in. Born in 1975, he's a member of Gen x, according to the books, but I'm not convinced. He just doesn't seem like an X - more about this later. We were all ready to talk about games. According to Generation z blogs, this is an important indicator of the generations. It doesn't say why. Gen Z is the most important generational shift so far, according to Gen Z Blogs but their experiences and outlook are not understood well enough by those who have come before them. Generation Z has huge, as yet mostly untapped, potential to meet the challenges of today. In 2025 Generation Z will form over a quarter of the UK workforce and an even larger proportion of US. The older ones are already in management positions in large companies and ripping up the rulebook on their own. Their importance in the workplace will grow. But back to our question. Dorothy is steadfast in her determination not to play games or even have a pedicure for that matter. So you'll want to tune in next month to hear the final word on Why Generations Fight and if we can possibly get along. I actually thank we can, but I'm not sure I can learn one of those electronic games. But little old people can't manage those teeny keys. This is the closest thing to a drop dead question that we've had on Generation Gap. What do you think about old time hands and new time games. Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, Geoff and Katrina talk about the upcoming "posthumous partnering" of Stephen King and Maurice Sendak in a children's book of Hansel and Gretel in September. The news of this collaboration reminded Katrina of another book Maurice Sendak did with a dead partner, Wilhelm Grimm. In the 1800's before the Grimm Brothers were a household name, Wilhelm penned a letter to Mili, which contained a tale. Over a hundred and fifty years later, that letter was sold at auction and then turned into a book with the art of Maurice Sendak. Katrina retells the tale found in Dear Mili and then shows how the tale contains elements from three different stories found in the broader Brother's Grimm collection. Geoff and Katrina discuss how this letter might be a beautiful moment where Wilhelm Grimm stopped writing for a broader audience, and instead, wrote for an audience of one. Dear Mili.

Redefining leadership requires authenticity, cross-functional collaboration, and a willingness to embrace non-linear career paths. Kari Wilhelm, SVP of Data Strategy and Commercialization at Worldpay, embodies these principles as she navigates the complex intersection of payments technology and data innovation. In this fascinating conversation, Kari reveals how her unconventional journey from economic research in Hong Kong to management consulting at McKinsey ultimately led her to the payments industry. Rather than viewing her diverse background as a limitation, she's leveraged these varied experiences as strategic assets that provide unique perspectives on complex business challenges. As she notes, "I've really experienced that kind of non-linearity as more of a strength rather than a setback."Kari offers profound insights on modern leadership, emphasizing the importance of building inclusive team cultures, setting clear expectations, and providing the necessary tools for success. She highlights how the pandemic has transformed leadership dynamics, creating new challenges for maintaining collaborative environments across dispersed teams. Her practical solutions for adapting leadership approaches in virtual settings demonstrate her thoughtful, pragmatic approach to team management. The conversation explores the unique strengths women bring to payments leadership, particularly their ability to work cross-functionally and build consensus across stakeholders. Kari observes that women often excel at listening deeply to understand underlying needs rather than just surface requests, allowing them to craft solutions that address fundamental issues and build alignment across diverse groups. As leader of Worldpay's data strategy initiatives, Kari provides fascinating glimpses into how AI and data analytics are transforming the payments landscape. Her current focus on leveraging Worldpay's vast transaction data to provide merchant insights represents the cutting edge of payments innovation, with potential to reshape how consumers discover and purchase products.Whether you're a payments veteran, an aspiring leader, or simply curious about the human elements that drive technological innovation, Kari's perspective offers valuable guidance on navigating today's complex business environment with authenticity and purpose.

Throughout World War II, Nazi Germany was a formidable force due to its military strength and success. A large reason for this success was its intelligence network. What most people don't know is that the Nazi head of military intelligence was actively working against Adolf Hitler. Through a series of active and passive measures, he went from a loyal Nazi to a double agent. Part of the answer to that question lies in the arts and culture understanding the role it can have in a time of collapse or crisis, and to understand that itself is not in crisis. I think that's a big point because we hear a lot right now around the crisis that is happening in cultural institutions and in the arts. And in fact, the crisis that is happening is in our world, right? It's an ecological crisis, it's a world order crisis, it's a humanitarian crisis. The arts themselves have a lot to contribute to these moments in terms of meaning, belonging, helping us to process those crises. But the arts themselves are not in a crisis. What we can do, though, is place ourselves within those larger crises and ask the question, what can we contribute that's of meaning and value to people as they experience these other things that are really significant in the world that we're living in right now.My conversation with consultant and strategist in public policy, arts, culture and creative industries, Kelly Wilhelm, who currently leads the Cultural Policy Hub at OCAD University in Tkaronto. Kelly is a long-time friend and colleague with whom I have had many passionate conversations about art, culture, leadership, life and how to have fun through it all. This conversation was no exception. We talked a lot about precarity in the arts sector but also its resilience. You'll hear me refer to Kelly's A New Project on Precarity and Sustainability article in the recording. I love the way Kelly always finds a way to ask good and timely questions.Episode notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AIAction pointsChallenge traditional leadership models in arts organizations to foster inclusivity and relevance.Advocate for the arts and culture in broader public policy discussions, including areas like AI.Examine the financial conditions and precarity affecting individual artists and creators.Re-evaluate the not-for-profit model in the arts to identify sustainable governance structures.Promote collaboration between arts organizations and other sectors to contribute to democratic processes and public good.Story PreviewWhat if the arts aren't in crisis, but are actually a crucial part of the solution to global challenges? Beginning her career in Toronto in the late 1990s, Kelly saw the contrast between the work show and stories told in public art galleries and museums, and the diverse communities outside their doors. She became determined to bridge this gap. Her work at the Cultural Policy Hub at OCAD University is an example of her commitment to equity, relevance, and the power of the arts to create meaningful change. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESHey conscient listeners, I've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa).
