In this episode we answer emails from Anonymous, Pete, and Wilhelm. We discuss how MiFID reshapes investing for U.S. citizens retiring in the EU, the commodities fund HGER and the "Desert Portfolio."Links:Father McKenna Center Donation Page: Donate - Father McKenna CenterIBKR MiFId Client Page: MiFID Client CategoryPortfolio Charts Assets Page (for finding funds): Assets – Portfolio ChartsAnimal Spirits Podcast re HGER: Talk Your Book: How to Invest in Commodities - Animal Spirits Podcast | Podcast on Spotify Testfolio HGER Analysis: testfol.io/analysis?s=dcDPCTQc1j6HGER Fund Page: ETF | Harbor Commodity All-Weather Strategy ETF (HGER) | Harbor CapitalPortfolio Charts Safe Withdrawal Rates Chart: Withdrawal Rates – Portfolio ChartsBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:Planning to retire in Europe while keeping a U.S.-style portfolio? The moment you change residency, MiFID rules can block purchases of U.S.-domiciled ETFs, turning routine rebalancing into a headache and putting your safe withdrawal rate at risk. We break down practical steps to keep your plan intact, including using Interactive Brokers to run a two-sleeve setup—sell-only in the U.S. account, buy in an EU account with UCITS equivalents—and how to make rebalancing work without creating a tax and paperwork nightmare. You'll hear the pros, cons, and tradeoffs of each path so you can navigate regulation with confidence, not guesswork. We also examine a smarter way to think about commodities. Legacy benchmarks like BCOM haven't evolved with investor goals, and that's where HGER's rules-based design stands out with a quality and carry overlay that often elevates gold. But if you already hold gold, does a gold-tilted commodity fund add diversification or just overlap? We compare HGER to PDBC, highlight correlations with stocks and gold, and explain why managed futures can deliver broader, more resilient diversification across commodities, rates, and currencies. If you're after true crisis defense, a blend of gold and managed futures may beat a traditional commodity sleeve. To round it out, we stress-test the “desert portfolio”—high treasuries, modest equities, a touch of gold—and explain when its calm ride helps and when it lowers your long-term sustainable withdrawal. If your real objective is durable retirement income, consider upping equity exposure, adding value tilts, and relying on uncorrelated diversifiers that keep you rebalancing through drawdowns. Subscribe for more DIY-friendly portfolio tactics, share with a friend who's eyeing an EU move, and leave a review to tell us what cross-border investing questions you want answered next.Support the show
Angela Wilhelms, President and CEO of Oregon Business and Industry (OBI), discussed the organization's role in advocating for businesses at the state level. OBI recently released a report ranking Oregon as the nation's seventh most regulated state, with 179,000 regulations, many of which are excessive and burdensome. Wilhelm highlighted that 74% of small businesses struggle to keep up with changing regulations. She emphasized the need for legislative and executive oversight to streamline regulations and improve business competitiveness. Wilhelm also noted the impact of regulatory complexity on economic growth and called for a shift towards more practical and accountable rule-making.

Manual regression testing isn't going away—yet most teams still struggle with deciding what actually needs to be retested in fast release cycles. See how AI can help your manual testing now: https://testguild.me/parasoftai In this episode, we explore how Parasoft's Test Impact Analysis helps QA teams run fewer tests while improving confidence, coverage, and release velocity. Wilhelm Haaker (Director of Solution Engineering) and Daniel Garay (Director of QA) join Joe to unpack how code-level insights and real coverage data eliminate guesswork during regression cycles. They walk through how Parasoft CTP identifies exactly which manual or automated tests are impacted by code changes—and how teams use this to reduce risk, shrink regression time, and avoid redundant testing. What You'll Learn: Why manual regression remains a huge bottleneck in modern DevOps How Test Impact Analysis reveals the exact tests affected by code changes How code coverage + impact analysis reduce risk without expanding the test suite Ways teams use saved time for deeper exploratory testing How QA, Dev, and Automation teams can align with real data instead of assumptions Whether you're a tester, automation engineer, QA lead, or DevOps architect, this episode gives you a clear path to faster, safer releases using data-driven regression strategies.

But leading and building a successful real estate career in another country is not always as easy or glamorous as it might look. Michelle shares how she moved from Canada to Baja, Mexico, started a brokerage after COVID, and made transparency the heart of her business. Carmen tells her powerful story of resilience, leaving Nicaragua, adapting to a new life, and eventually stepping into her role as the leader of AREAA Global. They talk about how they pushed through difficult seasons and the habits that keep them grounded, like going for walks, enjoying simple coffee chats, counting their blessings, and staying close to family. Jody's life reads like a movie—one she ultimately wrote and directed herself. Growing up in isolation and surviving severe trauma, she moved through poverty, rape, separation from siblings, and profound loss—the deaths of her mother, grandmother, and daughter. Yet Jody transformed her pain into purpose, becoming a mother, model, teacher, TV's beloved adult facilitator on Romper Room, guidance counselor, and author. At 84, she achieved what few could imagine: becoming the Oldest Female First-Time Feature Filmmaker, earning awards and international recognition. Her film, Letters to Stephanie, tells an inspiring adoption story drawn from her decades-long fight to reconnect with her granddaughter. When South Carolina law blocked grandparents from signing the Adoption Reunion Registry, Jody helped change it. Now, at 85, she's writing her memoir—the final dream on her bucket list. Creativity through the lens of a social innovator, social entrepreneur, systems change advocate and artist"To me, it means that I am somehow tapped into the flow of life."Nora Wilhelm is a social innovator and systems entrepreneur dedicated to driving positive change for a regenerative and just future. Her journey as a changemaker began at the age of 15, when she became deeply aware of global challenges, particularly in youth engagement and sustainable development. This early commitment to active citizenship led her to work with international NGOs and, over time, to focus on systems change and social innovation. In 2017, she co-founded collaboratio helvetica, an initiative designed to catalyse systems change in Switzerland in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Nora holds a BA in International Affairs from the University of St. Gallen and an MSt in Social Innovation from the University of Cambridge, combining academic insight with hands-on experience in systemic transformation. After experiencing burnout firsthand, she created the well • change atelier in 2023: a space for creative regeneration and inner work, designed to help changemakers turn personal challenges, like burnout, into opportunities for growth and sustainable impact. Today, through her initiative Parayma , she also supports changemakers in clarifying their purpose and navigating the emotional and practical demands of systems work.Recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and a UNESCO Young Leader, she has spoken on global stages and continues to advocate for grounded, sustainable, and systemically informed approaches to leadership and transformation.www.norawilhelm.orgwww.linkedin.com/in/norawilhelmhttps://www.instagram.com/nora.wilhelm/https://www.facebook.com/nora.m.wilhelmwww.changeatelier.orghttps://www.instagram.com/thewell.changeatelier/https://www.linkedin.com/company/thewellchangeatelierhttps://www.pinterest.ch/thewellchangeatelier/www.parayma.cohttps://www.linkedin.com/company/paraymahttps://www.instagram.com/parayma.coSend us a text

Acclaimed author Gabor Maté joins the conversation in part two of our series exploring Wilhelm von Humboldt's public education system. Maté is a former English teacher. In this episode we ask: Is Humboldt's 200-year-old system equipped to meet the challenging demands of the 21st century? And does it still reflect his ideals, especially at the university level? *This episode concludes our two-part series. It originally aired on April 16, 2024.
Success for a princely family in the Late Middle Ages has a lot to do with reproductive luck. Not having any offspring, in particular no male offspring is a bit of a knockout. But having too many sons that could be a major issue too.And in 1386 the Habsburgs struggled with exactly that problem. Their territory was already divided between an Albertine and a Leopoldine line. But then Leopold had four sons, bringing the number of archdukes of Austria to six, which is five too many.In this episode we will discuss how they managed to muck it up quite bad, in fact so bad, one of their number had to fall to his knees before the emperor, not once, not twice, but three times…Albertiner- Albrecht III (1349-1395) o Albrecht IV (1377-1404) § Albrecht V (II) (1397-1439) · Ladislaus Postumus (1440-1457)Leopoldiner- Leopold III (1351-1386) o Wilhelm (1370-1406) o Leopold IV (1371-1411) o Ernst der Eiserne (1377-1424) § Friedrich V (III) (1415-1494) § Albrecht VI (1418-1463) o Friedrich IV (1382-1439) § Siegismund der Munzreiche (1427-1496)The music for the show is Flute Sonata in E-flat major, H.545 by Carl Phillip Emmanuel Bach (or some claim it as BWV 1031 Johann Sebastian Bach) performed and arranged by Michel Rondeau under Common Creative Licence 3.0.As always:Homepage with maps, photos, transcripts and blog: www.historyofthegermans.comIf you wish to support the show go to: Support • History of the Germans PodcastFacebook: @HOTGPod Threads: @history_of_the_germans_podcastBluesky: @hotgpod.bsky.socialInstagram: history_of_the_germansTwitter: @germanshistoryTo make it easier for you to share the podcast, I have created separate playlists for some of the seasons that are set up as individual podcasts. they have the exact same episodes as in the History of the Germans, but they may be a helpful device for those who want to concentrate on only one season. Two hundred years ago, Wilhelm von Humboldt created the education system as we know it today. At the heart of his philosophy of education was the concept of Bildung — reaching one's inner potential. Yet over the years, as his public education system was adopted, Bildung may well have been the critical piece left out. *This episode is part one of two-part series. It originally aired on April 15, 2024.
