This is a re-edited version of an interview that was first heard on "Light Hearted" in 2019.  Jim Pope was a keeper at rugged Whaleback Lighthouse in Maine from 1960 to '62, and the light was automated and de-staffed a short time later. Whaleback is a ledge on the northeast side of the entrance to the Piscataqua River, on the approach to the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 70-foot granite lighthouse tower was built in 1872. The keepers lived inside the tower itself. Whaleback Lighthouse, photo by Jeremy D'Entremont Jim Pope was born in Scarborough, Maine, in 1938. After graduation from Traip Academy in Kittery he began a lifelong career on the water. After his time in the Coast Guard, he worked as a tugboat captain for Moran Towing for more than 25 years. He lived for many years in Eliot, Maine, near Kittery, and was fondly known as the Pope of Elliot.

Middle school is a terrible time for teenage girls. Their bodies are changing. Acne is developing. Boys are starting to look at them. And for whatever reason, girls start being really mean to each other. They often feel like no one understands them, like they have to pretend to be someone else, like they're supposed to mold themselves into what society expects them to be. Carrie Penna remembers these feelings. Now she's on a mission to make sure no Seacoast girl ever has to feel them again. In today's conversation from my makeshift studio in Portsmouth, the Executive Director of Soul Models and I discuss: Why I care about women's issues (00:00) Carrie's middle school experience (02:45) Living in San Diego (07:04) Working at Lululemon in NH (12:50) Why Carrie joined Soul Models (26:05) What Soul Models does (28:02) How to participate in Soul Models (38:18) Boys' struggles vs. girls' struggles (42:55) Soul Powerful event (47:10) Why Carrie froze her eggs (48:58) What's your mission? (58:13) Carrie Penna is the Executive Director of Soul Models, a Seacoast nonprofit that gives middle school girls the tools they need to become confident young women. With the help of facilitators like Amy Tilton or Bridget Jenkins, Carrie creates a curriculum featuring local leaders in art, mindfulness, cooking, and more. Formerly a leader at Portsmouth's (extinct) Lululemon showroom downtown, Penna grew up in Durham, N.H., attended Stonehill College, and also lived in San Diego for five years following a stint working at Dana Farber in Boston. --To get Soul Models into your daughter's school district, visit SoulModels.org. Everyone wants to live on the Seacoast. And who can blame longtime city dwellers, newlyweds, retirees, or recent college graduates for wanting to plant down roots here? With proximity to mountains, beaches, great food, and Boston, the Seacoast is a highly practical place to call home. The problem is ... the demand doesn't meet the supply these days. So, as simple economics would have it, housing prices surge. Costly Seacoast real estate, unfortunately, is costing many aspiring homeowners their dreams of owning property, leaving lots of New Hampshirites and Mainers feeling dejected, hopeless, and like they'll have to settle for a house that doesn't meet their needs and wants. Fortunately, today's guest is here to help those who feel they're getting the short end of the real estate stick. In today's conversation from my makeshift studio in Portsmouth, Andrew Samonas, one of the Seacoast's leading real estate experts joins me to discuss: The importance of choosing the right home (00:00) The BTS of working in real estate (03:30) The state of Seacoast real estate (09:51) How to buy an (expensive) Seacoast home (14:30) How the U.S. economy impacts Seacoast housing (17:20) Under-the-radar Seacoast towns to buy property in (23:30) Buyers' biggest concerns (25:35) Buying vs. renting (30:36) Hearth Market's big miss (36:13) Why businesses struggle surviving in Portsmouth (43:00) What's your mission? (52:10) The Final Final Question (53:41) Andrew Samonas is an operating agent and owner of Samonas Realty, a legendary Portsmouth-based real estate agency. Alongside his father, John, Andrew is responsible for selling many of the residential and commercial properties you see as you walk through Portsmouth, Kittery, Eliot, Rye, and more. --To learn more about the services offered at Samonas Realty, simply visit SamonasGroup.com for more information. --To support the telling of more educational Seacoast Stories like this one, please FOLLOW this podcast on our Apple Podcasts and/or Spotify feeds. My Body Odyssey rode along the 20th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride this year, interviewing 4 protagonists who faced steep uphill challenges to even get to the starting line of this scenic ride. Rebecca, a yoga teacher in her early sixties, has missed the event the past few years- first, due to a recurrence of endometrial cancer, then COVID, and then work obligations. She counts three challenges in completing this year's one hundred mile route.  “One is torn ligaments in my knee,” she told us, “ and one is that almost exactly two years ago today, I had my last chemotherapy treatment. And in the mix, I manage the energy of depression.” Profiled in a previous episode, Larry is a Stage IV prostate cancer survivor taking on the 40-mile distance despite finishing chemotherapy three months ago and sustaining a training ride fall two days before the event. “I was just gonna have a small ride and I fell off my bike onto a set of railroad tracks,” Larry explains. “The doctor said… I'll give you a 20, 30% chance of riding. So I may not do the full 40 miles.” Also taking on the 40-mile ride is New Hampshire resident Jim, an engineering PhD who became partially paralyzed from a mountain biking accident twelve years ago. Nevertheless, getting back onto a bike -or a more stable three wheeled trike- became one of the major goals of his long rehab process.  “I have to concentrate really hard when I ride,” says Jim, who propels the substantial weight of his “trike” with only good leg. “So it's also done a lot for my focus.” Eric, a Portland resident in his early thirties, had a serious hiking accident one year ago that required surgical attachment of a quad muscle as well as a rotator cuff repair. That put him in a downward spiral, both financially and behaviorally. Yet, he's taking on the 62-mile ride today after gradually escalating his training mileage the past few months.  “I think it all saved me when I found the right athletic trainer that was able to work on my injuries,” he recounts. “She encouraged me to get help on my mental health issues I was battling... And then over a few months, I started getting more confident.” Over 800 riders at this year's Maine Lighthouse Ride, which benefits completion of the Eastern Trail, a 65-mile dedicated bike path from Kittery to Portland Maine for recreation and commuting. That's a lot of mileage and a lot of stories. Tune in to find out if these four MBO protagonists– Rebecca, Larry, Jim and Eric– complete their ride distances. What rewards will they reap from the 20th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride? My Body Odyssey is a Fluent Knowledge production. Original music by Ryan Adair Rooney. We believe the best weed is created by blending data-driven, high-tech agricultural techniques with old-school, organic techniques to boost soil health and terpene profiles. Our immediate family controls every aspect of the process, from seed to sale, to ensure our high standards. Archie McEachern, Global Enterprise Leader & former VP at Nike When I was a kid, I learned about fire safety. One of the visual frameworks adults presented to me was the “fire triangle”: the idea that for fire to exist, you had to have three ingredients: heat, oxygen, and fuel. Take one of these three things away, and you had NO fire. Well, just like fire needs certain conditions to thrive, business outcomes require specific ingredients too. Finding the right blend can be especially tricky when teammates are separated by time, geography, background, and language. So that's why it's been important for today's guest to keep the following question in his mind: How can deep connection and trust lead to a culture of innovation? A conversation with Archie McEachern, on this episode of Lead With a Question. Guest Bio: Archie grew up in Kittery, Maine. a small, coastal town an hour north of Boston. He attended Ithaca College in Upstate, NY, and played collegiate basketball. He spent 28+ years at Nike, starting in a warehouse in Greenland, NH. He's had leadership experiences across multiple functions including sales, product creation, general management and merchandising. From 2009 to 2020 he spent the majority of my executive career in merchandising where he had the chance to lead teams in North America, Japan (Tokyo) and China (Shanghai). During that time, he lived with the family for 5 years in Asia (2012-2015 Tokyo), 2018-2020 (Shanghai). Archie's current work includes a start-up company, 360 Hoops, which makes a 3-sided basket attached to one adjustable pool…patented design. He also works in an advisory capacity with a few smaller companies and/or individuals. He volunteered as a high school coach in Maine recently, which was one of the more rewarding experiences he's had. Best season the team had in 25 years (not due to him, in his opinion!) Finally, he's the lucky husband to his wife Bridget, and they have 2 great kids ages 20 and 17. Get to know Archie on his LinkedIn Profile.    --------- Please like, subscribe, rate, and review! We've been doing regional gatherings at our home here in New Hampshire for the last year.  It started out of friendship and has evolved to include upwards of around 30-40 leadership type folks around the area.  Many of us all have in common, the movement in our area that is ever expanding.  Last weekend in Kittery, ME we had a similar type setting but open the gathering up to anyone who wanted to come and hear about house church.  We had roughly 7 house church homes represented with about 35 folks present. Each time we meet the settings differ as do the outcome.  We were honored today at Kingdom Come to have a friend of the show Steve Leifheit on the program again.  Steve took the lead on setting up the Maine get together which was a nice break for us here in Concord.  His passion for this movement is contagious.  The show we had him on in the past called The Great Spiritual Reset Part 4 is one of our most listened to program's after 3 years!  Thanks for listening and believing in what God is building.

This exciting course is currently taught by Woody Mott, son of Todd Mott the New England brewing legend, and Horst Dornbusch, editor and contributor for The Oxford Companion to Beer, at Tributary Brewing Company. The class will start off with Todd's journey from the finance world to the brewing world, explaining his deep involvement and understanding of every step in the beer-making process. Horst will then join us and kick off the lecture with a dive into the history of pilsner, the Californian Common, New York Cream Ale, all before introducing us to Tributary's favorites like the flagship Pale Ale, the Dinkelator, and the soon-to-run-out Imperial Stout that will be available April 23. Lastly, Todd will go deep into his approach to recipe writing and his adoration for Aventinus, whereas Horst will emphasize the importance of ingredients and agriculture in the making of the beers, along with a climate change industry report. Todd will then leave a final appreciation for all the brewers that came before Tributary, and assure every student attending: “You're just gonna have a damn good beer!”Heritage Radio Network is a listener supported nonprofit podcast network. John and new addition to the show, Sales Associate with Tate and Foss, Sean Fellows have a lot to discuss in this episode: understanding the beautiful 13 sample seacoast towns and a few of the surrounding towns.  Plus we have the Tate and Foss Market Watch, and a spotlight on two towns similar in lifestyle, but with big differences in tax rates. John talks about the story he did with the Portsmouth Herald on affordability which they are defining as $450,000 and below. And finally, what can we expect in 2022? John and Sean share their thoughts on the year ahead and how to make the most of the situation at hand. The Tate and Foss Market Update: Lowest January inventory ever for 13 Sample Seacoast Towns—Less than half of last year. Some 57 active single-family listings.  Median price for 2021 in the Seacoast was $629,000 (No change from 2020) Highest price in Maine $7.5 in Kennebunkport and $5.676 in New Castle, NH …In Portsmouth $596,000; Rye $1m; Greenland $539,000. Overall, in the 13--$615,000 up 9.4% or about .7% per month.   SPOTLIGHT on Kittery Point, ME and New Castle, NH. Buyers love these towns because they are ancient seacoast communities where lifestyle amenities are superior, and one can feel that “sense of place” you would hope to find in two towns founded in 1647 and 1693 respectively. What you might not realize out of the gate is that both towns are about 11-degrees cooler than Portsmouth in the summer, thanks to ocean proximity. John happened to grow up in Kittery Point and spent many a lazy summer day on Sea point Beach. It's still beautiful, pristine, and not on everyone's radar. It's also a great place to walk the dog in winter. Similarly, New Castle has New Castle Common which is right on the Piscataqua River and has a lovely beach from which you enjoy views of all river traffic coming in and out of Portsmouth Harbor. Both communities have first-class marinas and the Portsmouth Yacht Club in New Castle hosts recreational and competitive sailing activities during the season. New Castle is home to the famous Wentworth Hotel as well as the Wentworth Country Club for golf, tennis, and swimming. Kittery has an extensive working town wharf with spectacular views looking directly out to Whaleback Light and the mouth of Portsmouth Harbor, known to locals as Pepperrell Cove. It's also five miles from the York Golf and Tennis Club. Tax Rate is $6.19 in NC, but $13 in Kittery.
