We meet artist Joe Bradley, on the eve of his new solo show of new paintings in London. Animal Family is Bradley's second exhibition with David Zwirner since the announcement of his representation in May 2023. His celebrated debut at David Zwirner New York, Vom Abend, was presented in spring 2024. In November 2025, a major survey of Bradley's works from the past ten years will open at Kunsthalle Krems, Austria. In these new paintings, figurative elements—which Bradley had begun to develop in previous works—emerge as central compositional structures. ‘I have never really felt comfortable calling myself an abstract painter,' says Bradley. ‘There have always been flashes of figuration in my work. For whatever reason, at this moment, I feel ready to let it all come to the surface.' 1A group of horizontal paintings feature black contour lines that serve as scaffoldings for swaths of colour, floral blots of brushy paint, and scraped and stippled textural patches, which coalesce into hulking, animal-like forms that fill the surface of the support. Bradley builds up these forms until they achieve a loose balance between assembled wholes and disparate parts, establishing a dynamic tension in the work between cohesion and dissolution. In one painting, pinkish triangles read like teeth extending along a pronounced blue-and-white snout. Lines, shapes, and blots of colour momentarily read like a tail or paw but just as quickly come to stand as distinct visual components. This figural mass rests against a black ground dotted with white, suggesting a dark, star-filled sky. While related to those paintings, several vertical canvases represent a notable evolution in Bradley's work in which the human form becomes a broad organising principle. Shades of mid-century deconstructed figuration and other art-historical references and associations come through in these large, frontally oriented figures.Like his constant working and reworking of the formal and compositional elements in his paintings, such associations are part of Bradley's open and deliberative method of painterly accumulation and adaptation, whereby he constantly reacts and responds to the process of creation itself. In some of these paintings, the figure is quite discernible. In others, the formal elements share only a general relationship to the human form with eyelike ovals or leglike protrusions suggesting bodily architectures. Like the animal associations in the horizontal canvases, these roughly human-scale paintings reinforce such bodily associations, reflecting Bradley's sensitivity to the formal, compositional, and material qualities of his medium.Joe Bradley (b. 1975) is widely recognised for his expansive visual practice that encompasses painting as well as sculpture and drawing. Over the past twenty years, Bradley has constantly reinvented his approach to his art, creating a distinctive body of work that has ranged from modular, minimalist-style paintings and sculptures to rough-hewn, heavily worked surfaces featuring pictographic and abstract elements to refined and layered compositions that, as critic Roberta Smith notes, “balance gracefully between representation and abstraction.”Bradley was born in Kittery, Maine, and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. He presently lives and works in New York. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is a re-edited version of an interview that was first heard on "Light Hearted" in 2019.  Jim Pope was a keeper at rugged Whaleback Lighthouse in Maine from 1960 to '62, and the light was automated and de-staffed a short time later. Whaleback is a ledge on the northeast side of the entrance to the Piscataqua River, on the approach to the harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The 70-foot granite lighthouse tower was built in 1872. The keepers lived inside the tower itself. Whaleback Lighthouse, photo by Jeremy D'Entremont Jim Pope was born in Scarborough, Maine, in 1938. After graduation from Traip Academy in Kittery he began a lifelong career on the water. After his time in the Coast Guard, he worked as a tugboat captain for Moran Towing for more than 25 years. He lived for many years in Eliot, Maine, near Kittery, and was fondly known as the Pope of Elliot.

Middle school is a terrible time for teenage girls. Their bodies are changing. Acne is developing. Boys are starting to look at them. And for whatever reason, girls start being really mean to each other. They often feel like no one understands them, like they have to pretend to be someone else, like they're supposed to mold themselves into what society expects them to be. Carrie Penna remembers these feelings. Now she's on a mission to make sure no Seacoast girl ever has to feel them again. Everyone wants to live on the Seacoast. And who can blame longtime city dwellers, newlyweds, retirees, or recent college graduates for wanting to plant down roots here? With proximity to mountains, beaches, great food, and Boston, the Seacoast is a highly practical place to call home. The problem is ... the demand doesn't meet the supply these days. So, as simple economics would have it, housing prices surge. Costly Seacoast real estate, unfortunately, is costing many aspiring homeowners their dreams of owning property, leaving lots of New Hampshirites and Mainers feeling dejected, hopeless, and like they'll have to settle for a house that doesn't meet their needs and wants. Fortunately, today's guest is here to help those who feel they're getting the short end of the real estate stick. My Body Odyssey rode along the 20th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride this year, interviewing 4 protagonists who faced steep uphill challenges to even get to the starting line of this scenic ride. Rebecca, a yoga teacher in her early sixties, has missed the event the past few years- first, due to a recurrence of endometrial cancer, then COVID, and then work obligations. She counts three challenges in completing this year's one hundred mile route.  “One is torn ligaments in my knee,” she told us, “ and one is that almost exactly two years ago today, I had my last chemotherapy treatment. And in the mix, I manage the energy of depression.” Profiled in a previous episode, Larry is a Stage IV prostate cancer survivor taking on the 40-mile distance despite finishing chemotherapy three months ago and sustaining a training ride fall two days before the event. “I was just gonna have a small ride and I fell off my bike onto a set of railroad tracks,” Larry explains. “The doctor said… I'll give you a 20, 30% chance of riding. So I may not do the full 40 miles.” Also taking on the 40-mile ride is New Hampshire resident Jim, an engineering PhD who became partially paralyzed from a mountain biking accident twelve years ago. Nevertheless, getting back onto a bike -or a more stable three wheeled trike- became one of the major goals of his long rehab process.  “I have to concentrate really hard when I ride,” says Jim, who propels the substantial weight of his “trike” with only good leg. “So it's also done a lot for my focus.” Eric, a Portland resident in his early thirties, had a serious hiking accident one year ago that required surgical attachment of a quad muscle as well as a rotator cuff repair. That put him in a downward spiral, both financially and behaviorally. Yet, he's taking on the 62-mile ride today after gradually escalating his training mileage the past few months.  “I think it all saved me when I found the right athletic trainer that was able to work on my injuries,” he recounts. “She encouraged me to get help on my mental health issues I was battling... And then over a few months, I started getting more confident.” Over 800 riders at this year's Maine Lighthouse Ride, which benefits completion of the Eastern Trail, a 65-mile dedicated bike path from Kittery to Portland Maine for recreation and commuting. That's a lot of mileage and a lot of stories. Tune in to find out if these four MBO protagonists– Rebecca, Larry, Jim and Eric– complete their ride distances. What rewards will they reap from the 20th Annual Maine Lighthouse Ride? My Body Odyssey is a Fluent Knowledge production. Original music by Ryan Adair Rooney.
