Markets are lower once again today, as investors debate the path of the economy ahead of tomorrow's jobs report. We'll get a preview of the numbers. Plus, we'll speak with one investor who says no matter what happens with the economy, you should “always bet on growth.” And, if the economy has you concerned about stocks, maybe consider investing in handbags & sneakers. We'll look at that market as part of our ‘Alternate Investment' series.
In 1985, at the height of the Cold War, Bulgaria was a strictly controlled communist dictatorship. It was also facing a wave of infection and death caused by a mysterious new virus. The authorities refused to recognise the threat of HIV and AIDS, so one of Bulgaria's virologists took the initiative. In this programme for World Aids Day, Professor Radka Argirova tells Janet Barrie how she smuggled the live HIV virus back from Germany to start testing in Bulgaria for the first time. We are so excited to welcome a new guest to our Designer Spotlight Series: Gretchen Maull of GG Maull designer handbags. This is NOT your average designer, nor just another handbag. Gretchen is an artist and a visionary, and we love having her on our podcast because she has built her business around empowering women and giving joy. And #sorrynotsorry, but what else is there? Designed in NY, and carefully handcrafted in Italy by cherished artisans — GG Maull is a handbag brand motivated by spreading JOY, building CONFIDENCE, and inspiring WOMEN. But how Gretchen started her own handbag design company – and more importantly – why, is the real story. Get the full episode here! PRO TIP: This episode requires some visual assistance, so we recommend watching it on YouTube or visiting Holly's Pinterest. How it started: Gretchen believes in only having things in her life that "spark joy." She nearly lost her sister to a horrific car accident and came face to face with life's fragility. She had been in a hospital waiting room for hours anxious and desperate to hear whether her sister would survive, when the doctor finally announced that she would make it through the night. Her now-husband gifted her with a beautiful pair of black and emerald earrings. At the moment, in the ICU waiting area, it was not something she was expecting, nor felt she could be present for. But he insisted, "If these bring you joy for two minutes, that's two minutes of joy you need right now." (Host note to ladies: Marry THAT man!) Why GG Maull was started: Joy in the face of incredible adversity. That moment laid the groundwork for Gretchen's drive to empower women and equip them to live their lives to the fullest. She looked around and saw many women in New York struggling to perform multiple roles and responsibilities: building a career, being a sensitive friend, achieving their health and fitness goals, dating eligible partners, having a rich social life, becoming an adult, leading a community, caring for others around them, becoming a solid partner, managing a household, raising a family, taking conscious care of themselves, and being socially responsible citizens. ARE YOU EXHAUSTED YET??? In these pursuits, Gretchen found the women she came across being weighed down physically and emotionally. So, she was inspired to take her 10-year experience in handbag design under prestigious fashion labels to create her own brand characterized by functionality, aesthetics, and purpose. How it's going: Fast forward five years, and GG Maull now delivers functionality through handbags that can be worn multiple ways, including hands-free, with removable pouches that make it easy to change between handbags, and with even weight distribution. Gretchen's objective in delivering these unique functionality features is to provide customers the feelings of lightness, freedom, strength and security. “She observed her husband “preparing” to leave the house with astonishment that all he needs to do is grab his cell phone and wallet.” In contrast, she felt compelled to have a bag that gave women the ability to contend with expectations for the day ahead. Women fill multiple roles during the day, from perhaps mother in the morning to executive by day to sexy dinner companion or concert-goer at night. And while these roles certainly bear their respective shares of responsibilities, women don't have to feel anchored down anymore. With Gretchen's “multi-wear” approach, every woman can feel that as her role transitions, so can her handbag. Loving this journey for us! Gretchen's designs are different because they are versatile. But they also look different because of her passion for the types of leather she sources and her love for all aspects of design: color, texture, uniqueness. If you wear Gretchen's bags, you are considered one of her “Rebels,” because her customer does not live, breathe or dress like everyone else. A few of Holly's favorite styles: Power Belt Bag Don't call this a fanny pack, but it's a fanny pack. In the most glorious way! The Power Belt Bag can transition from a hands-free belt bag to fashionable tight cross-body to an evening clutch. #totallygettingthisone Rebel Holster Imagine the wild west of motherhood, when your hands are full, but you need your stuff handy at your side – well this ‘holster' slips over your back and rests two small handbags at waist-level on your sides. You have to see it to believe it! (Hint, go to Holly's Pinterest board!) Power Tote: To address the age-old challenge of switching between bags, the Power Tote was designed with a removable insertable pouch with magnetic snaps large enough to fit a laptop. It also has an outside cellphone pocket, so you don't spend 20 minutes searching for it in the bottom of a deep bag. (PS, it's also a killer diaper bag). #Finally #ThanksGretchen Cocktail Clutch: The Cocktail Clutch was designed with unique beaded fringe and Italian snake leather and was inspired by vintage cosmetic cases. It has a silver-plated ADJUSTABLE brass wristlet chain, so your hands are free for cocktails and crudité! There are just too styles many to love!! As always, Holly has hand-picked her favorites and created an episode board on Pinterest! Holly and Gretchen talk about so much more than just handbag love. This is truly an in-depth conversation about purpose, women supporting women, being a female entrepreneur - and the powerful impact of choosing to live life with joy as an end goal. We hope you will listen and come to love and appreciate Gretchen as much as we do! Follow her, support her, become a GG Maull Rebel! Thank you for joining us again this week. BoF luxury editor Robert Williams unpacks how the French luxury brand has managed to grab the industry's attention and maintain a sound business model without outside help. Simon Porte Jacquemus is one of fashion's hottest independent designers — and his namesake label is one of its most impressive businesses. The company, known for its tiny bags and minimalist playfulness, is on track to double annual revenues to over €200 million ($199 million) by year-end, with plans to reach €500 million by 2025. The designer has been able to build buzz with his clear brand vision, and savvy ability to storytell through social media. “He was one of the first designers to realise how powerful of a tool Instagram was going to be, and to have something really compelling to say on that platform — to have a universe that was just really organically compelling,” said BoF luxury editor Robert Williams. Key Insights:Simon Porte Jacquemus has managed to build a scalable luxury start-up without the help of a conglomerate or big investor: a rarity in fashion. Jacquemus thinks the pressure to up sales every season to keep the business running pushed him to commercial success. Armed with a new store on Avenue Montaigne, the brand reaches up into luxury prices, but maintains a more accessible, fun, young and playful bent.Handbags — led by the brand's hit, Chiquito style — are an essential profit driver for the business. With a new CEO on board in Puig's Bastien Daguzan, the brand is looking to solidify its footwear business and diversify its menswear offering. As of now, Jacquemus does not plan on taking outside investment. The brand believes it's momentum and strong retail partnerships will help it reach its sales goal of €500 million by 2025.Additional Resources:Jacquemus: A Fashion Star's Business Vision: For the first-time, the industry's hottest independent designer — a charismatic, social-media savvy storyteller from the south of France — reveals the financial underpinnings of his burgeoning company and plans for the next phase of growth. Myf and Zan are back and oh boy there's a lot to catch up on. Much of it food related, weirdly; from roast chicken handbags as art, to butter boards (wtaf), and Olivia Wilde's “special salad dressing”. James Cordern is being banned from eating out, for good measure. More locally, the Bureau of Meteorology caused it's own storm with an attempt at rebranding this week. And artists across the globe are cancelling tours and speaking out against rising costs, unsustainable touring wages, and the mental health impacts of working in an industry that is so demanding. Our guest this week is Michael Kliger, CEO of Mytheresa, the fast-growing global e-commerce destination for luxury fashion---and one of only a handful of retail "disruptor" brands that actually makes money. With Steve facing technical issues, our interview segment turns out to be a duet of Michael's, who explore the current state of the international luxury market and what makes Mytheresa truly remarkable within it. We learn about Mytheresa's rapid evolution since its founding in 2006, and get a glimpse into how an intense focus on the customer--characterized by curation, personalization, and localization--has fueled their success. We also go deep on how Michael thinks about "acquiring the right customers" and the magic formula that is essential to driving strong customer lifetime value. We close with a discussion of sustainability in the fashion world and the importance of story-telling and making memorable emotional connections with customers. But first we open with our hot-takes on the past week in retail news, including what it means to live in a VUCA world and why our season opening admonition to "buckle-up buttercup" almost makes us retail prophets. We also try to make sense of the blockbuster Kroger and Albertson's merger, TikTok's rumored entry into e-commerce, and the latest results from Steve's old employer (and MyTheresa's former corporate parent), Neiman Marcus. We close by highlighting strong results from fast-growing Aritzia--one of the OG's of DTC--while wondering aloud whether Vuori--part of the newer generation--can successfully expand globally. 买这种自行车的人，并不是interested in the function（对它的功能感兴趣），却是为了the special wood design（特殊的木制设计），因为the entire bike frame is made of wood, not metal（整辆自行车车架，都是由木头制成，而非金属）。 其实，人们买的不是a wooden bike，要的就是a luxury brand – Hermes（爱马仕这个品牌）。*function /ˈfʌŋkʃn/ n. 这位网友的评论，是一个sarcasm（讽刺），自行车座杆也就20美元，the extreme price isn't equal to the product（剩下的部分，价格和产品不对等）。*sarcasm /ˈsɑ:rkæzəm/ n. *down-to-earth price 切合实际的价格Comment 3：Craftsmanship（工艺）is going to cost but so is the name. It makes me wonder what it actually costs though. *craftsmanship /ˈkræftsmənʃɪp/ n. 荣耀hour /ˈaʊər/ n. 使精疲力尽这些奢侈品品牌，很容易读错，听音频[6:47-8:33]，看看你读对了没有香奈儿Chanel /ʃəˈnel/ 古驰Gucci /ˈɡuːtʃi/ 阿玛尼Armani /ˌɑːrˈmɑːni/范思哲Versace /veˈsɑːtʃe/ 纪梵希Givenchy /dʒɪˈvɑŋʃɪ/ 巴宝莉Burberry /ˈbɜːrˌberi/ LV Louis Vuitton /lui:vitn/ 迪奥Dior /diˈɔr/普拉达Prada /ˈprɑdə/4. 大多数美国人对luxury goods（奢侈品）的态度是：love them or don't care about them（要么很爱，要么是根本不在乎）。有些人是真正喜欢奢侈品，可能是因为their favorite celebrities and idols use them（他们最喜欢的名人或偶像用这些品牌），或者是他们想要look wealthy and successful and impress others（看上去富有，成功，并想要给别人留下深刻印象）。 因此，他们更愿意save their money and buy cheaper products（省钱买一些更便宜的产品）。人们对奢侈品的态度，可以总结为：one man's trash is another man's treasure. *appearance /əˈpɪrəns/ n. *fashionista /ˌfæʃnˈiːstə/ n. 超级时尚迷除了这些价格昂贵的奢侈品，many Americans pursue common luxuries（大多数美国人民追求的是普通奢侈品），比如说new cars, bigger houses, and the latest technology（like cellphones and laptops）。 Sarrah doesn't really care about her image looking fashionable（不在乎形象上的时髦），因此她也不会chase stuff（赶时髦）。 Sarrah would rather chase moments with people（更愿意追求和亲人、朋友共度的时光）。 For most people, they are luxurious.

About This Episode: After developing an affinity for design while in the costume department in high school, Rebecca Minkoff moved to New York City at only 18 years old to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer. In 2005, Rebecca designed her first handbag, which she soon dubbed the “Morning After Bag,” a.k.a. the “M.A.B.”. This iconic bag ignited Rebecca's career as a handbag designer and inspired her edgy, feminine creations in the years to come. After four years of designing statement-making handbags and accessories with her trademark leathers, studs and hardware, Rebecca returned to her roots of apparel design and introduced her first ready-to-wear collection in 2009. The brand has four domestic retail stores, eight international locations, and is distributed in over 900 stores worldwide. In 2011, Rebecca won industry recognition when she was awarded the Breakthrough Designer Award from the Accessories Council. In September of 2018, she established the Female Founder Collective, a network of businesses led by women that invests in women's financial power across the socioeconomic spectrum by enabling and empowering female-owned businesses.
