Yossel said no to a Russian General Rumyansev, a Russian war hero. No business on Shabbos. I read this story but do not remember where. I was not sure of the place, the people, or the time period (as is the case with many stories). I picked this time and place because it fits the narrative of the Partition of Poland and General Rumyansev because I read that his son helped build a shul in that village. It kind of makes sense with the story.

For hundreds of years, the Jewish community in Spain faced persecution and coercion to convert to Christianity. Compulsory debates and violent upheavals led to the 1391 pogroms, which became known as one of the worst massacres in Medieval history, forcing hundreds and thousands of Jews to be baptized and become Christians. The story is fictitious and based on true events and characters like the Archbishop of Burgos, Spain, Paul (Pablo) de Santa Maria, who was once Solomon, the Rov of Burgos. He led the Church on a crusade to persecute the Jews in 15th-century Spain, with restrictive laws and inciting riots. Rabbi Jacob Abotrani, an inspiration to the secret Jews, was in trouble with the Church. His unfinished Megilat Esther will be the guiding force of young Dovid Abotrani to trust in Hashem wherever he goes. This story is based on a Gershon Granzler story found in Galus Melodies, entitled The Young Artist.

This story presents the tragic reality of many Jewish boys who were kidnapped and forcibly baptized during the reign of Czar Nicholas I (1825-1855). This terrible event, known as the 'Cantonist Affair,' was a government policy that forced Jewish boys to serve in the Russian army for up to 25 years. The boys were taken from their families at a young age and forced to baptize through brutal conditions in the army, including physical abuse, and food deprivation. Many died from illness or mistreatment, while others survived through incredible resilience and determination. The Czar and Count Beckendorf were real people. Dmitry is a fictional Jewish character that depicts the tragic experience of a Jewish cantonist soldier. I encourage you to read The Cantonists: The Jewish Children's Army of the Czar by Larry Dominitch for a more in-depth understanding of this very tragic yet inspirational time period of persecution and Jewish survival.
