Did you know...?” The voice asked on the other end of the phone. Then spewed a long litany of salacious and slanderous allegations regarding someone on my team. A chapter-a-day podcast from 2 Corinthians 13. The text version may always be found and shared at tomvanderwell.com.
In this NBN episode, host Hollay Ghadery speaks with one of Canada's most beloved novelists, Catherine Bush, about her debut collection of short fiction, Skin (Goose Lane Editions, 2025). In Skin, Catherine Bush plunges into the vortex of all that shapes us. Summoning relationships between the human and more-than-human, she explores a world where touch and intimacy are both desirable and fraught. Ranging from the realistic to the speculative, Bush's stories tackle the condition of our restless, unruly world amidst the tumult of viruses, climate change, and ecological crises. Here, she brings to life unusual and perplexing intimacies: a man falls in love with the wind; a substitute teacher's behaviour with a student brings unforeseen risks; a woman becomes fixated on offering foot washes to strangers. Bold, vital, and unmistakably of the moment, Skin gives a charged and animating voice to the question of how we face the world and how, in the process, we discover tenderness and allow ourselves to be transformed. Catherine Bush is the author of five novels. Her work has been critically acclaimed, published internationally, and shortlisted for numerous awards. Her most recent novel, Blaze Island, was a Globe and Mail and Writers' Trust of Canada Best Book of the Year, and the Hamilton Reads 2021 Selection. Her other novels include the Canada Reads longlisted Accusation; the Trillium Award shortlisted Claire's Head; the national bestselling The Rules of Engagement, which was also named a New York Times Notable Book and a L.A. Times Best Book of the Year; and Minus Time, shortlisted for the City of Toronto Book Award. The recipient of numerous fellowships, Bush has been Writer-in-Residence/Landhaus Fellow at the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society in Munich and a Fiction Meets Science Fellow at the HWK in Delmenhorst, Germany. An Associate Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Guelph, she lives in Toronto and in an old schoolhouse in Eastern Ontario. Learn more about your ad choices. Elon Musk goes scorched earth on Trump, raising Epstein ties, clashing with cabinet allies, and unfollowing MAGA influencers. The PBD Podcast exposes possible tech coups, loyalty cracks, and how this feud could reshape 2024—and maybe trigger a national security showdown.
In today's episode, we examine the intensifying public rift between Elon Musk and Donald Trump. The catalyst? Trump's recently proposed “Big Beautiful Bill” which notably removes federal subsidies that have historically benefited Musk's ventures. Elon has not remained silent, and tensions escalated further when he retaliated by implying that Trump is listed among Jeffrey Epstein's known associates, suggesting this as the reason the full client list remains sealed.Major accusation. Is this an authentic ideological clash, or a calculated distraction? What are the political implications, and who truly benefits from this spectacle? Let's dissect the rhetoric, analyze the deeper motives, and apply biblical clarity in the midst of all of the chaos.—https://www.thebrandsunday.com/products/the-bible-study-physical?srsltid=AfmBOopJ1q_VkwFOO-Q2RCLoc1uzsHwAP4yh-_ZFG-r8_S9idICTj6nR
Today's BOOKSPO ventures beyond the human as I talk to Catherine Bush about her sixth book, which is also her first short story collection, SKIN. She tells me about how she, like many writers, began writing short fiction, but soon realized that the novel was the container for the stories she was telling, and would focus on novel-writing for years…until an interest in flash fiction brought her back to short stories. SKIN includes some of those flash fictions, as well as longer pieces, stories she's written recently and other reworkings of stories she'd written in the past, the result a collection that's rich and eclectic (in terms of form and approach), but with fascinatingly recurring touchpoints, which reflect Bush's preoccupations as a thinker and an author over the years. Pickle Me This is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. And her BOOKSPO pick is Ali Smith's COMPANION PIECE, a book that inspired Bush for the ways in which it seems to be fiction pushing right up against our present moment, with both humour and urgency at once. She talks about the sense of play in the book, which is a sense that infuses her own stories in SKIN. And about how she admires the role that animals play in Smith's novel, which—like her own book—gives a vision of the world that's more than merely human. A blistering book of short fiction from one of Canada's most loved novelists. In Skin, Catherine Bush plunges into the vortex of all that shapes us. The math is pretty simple - and I say that as someone who isn't good at math. Trump's bill cuts medicaid, food stamps & the paltry environmental protections we had in order to pay for MASSIVE tax cuts and income raises for the richest of the rich. Meanwhile, Israel shoots at diplomats in the West Bank becasue you know, why not? Corporate media falls over itself to make it seem like no big deal, just like they do with genocide. Israel's plan in Gaza appears to be a concentration camp within a concentration camp where Palestinians will be brought if they want any form of aid before they will likely be ethnically cleansed from the area, a play taken easily from the book of the violent colonizers of what is now known as the United States. PLUS prisoners as mirrors to our inhumanity and when it comes to colonizers, every accusation an admission not least of all when it comes to "white genocide." leecamp.com eleanorgoldfield.substack.com

In this episode, we explore how the Book of Concord speaks about the Law's twofold work—accusation for the unbeliever and mortification for the believer. Drawing from key confessional texts like the Apology of the Augsburg Confession and the Formula of Concord, we discuss how the Law always accuses, but does so differently depending on faith. For the unbeliever, the Law terrifies and condemns. For the believer, the accusation remains, but it drives daily repentance and the mortification of the flesh by the Spirit through the Word. This distinction is not only doctrinally vital but also deeply pastoral, grounding the Christian's struggle in Christ's victory and the Spirit's ongoing sanctifying work. Join us as we trace how this confessional insight shapes our understanding of sin, repentance, and the Christian life. ----more---- Host: Fr. Jason Braaten Regular Guest: Fr. IV Week After Easter Tuesday May 13, 2025Jeremiah 30:10-17Colossians 1:15-23Luke 6:12-26
What does it mean for Jesus to be glorified? This week's lectionary text opens with, “When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified.” You'll hear Dr. Chris Croghan and Sarah Stenson explain Jesus said this as Judas left the Last Supper to betray him. That is what God's glory is: Jesus' betrayal, death, and, ultimately, resurrection. Then we shift to discuss Jesus giving us a new commandment: “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” They teach us that love is the Law, not the Gospel. In fact, loving one another as Jesus loved us means we will suffer others' sins…and forgive them. EASTER SEASON GUIDE“Easter is not the end of the story. It's the beginning. Not the conclusion to a tragic season, but the breaking in of a new creation. Not a soft spring metaphor for fresh starts, but the announcement of a concrete, crucified, risen Christ alive for us and coming straight into our locked rooms.” Those are Pastor Mark Anderson's words describing the 7-week Season of Easter. Luther House of Study just released a week-by-week Easter Season planning guide that features planning outlines, Greek word details, sermon angles, liturgies, and hymn suggestions. Access the guide at the link in the show notes. Access the guide: https://lutherhouseofstudy.org/liturgical-year-planning-guides/ CARE OF SOULS - ADDICTIONIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those struggling with life's challenging situations: addiction, death, family disharmony, and more. Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders. With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the broken places of addiction not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ. Because in the end, it's not about fixing people—it's about preaching the Gospel. Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of Souls - Addiction SING TO THE LORD Martin Luther said, "Next to the word of God, the art of music is the greatest treasure in the world." To understand the importance of hymnody in the Lutheran church, Lars Olson and Mason Van Essen sit down with Zachary Brockhoff to discuss the lectionary's hymns, their meaning and history, and how the music preaches the Gospel. http://bit.ly/SingtotheLordGOSPEL John 13:31-3531 When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32 If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33 Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, 'Where I am going, you cannot come.' 34 I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." Scripture: Matthew 12:22-32

In today's episode, we're discussing the recent season finale of the Netflix reality dating show "Love Is Blind" and the two women who left their fiancés at the altar over political differences! Really, the men should have noticed the red flags sooner, but at least they dodged those bullets at the last minute. We also break down some more bad theology from the creators of the 2022 documentary "1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted Culture," thanks to the promotion of the recent web series. We debunk the creators' claims about the Bible's condemnation of homosexuality and the LGBT community stemming from a translation error, and we go back to scripture to remember how God defines marriage and what our standard ought to be. In our conversation on A Sharp Compassion, we have been looking at what we've called the mechanism of offense, the complex series of emotions and desires that lead from insecurity to offense. In today's episode, we're looking at the final step of that process: accusation. We'll explore how insecurity moves us to accusation and how this spirit of accusation has consumed our modern culture.
