Late Nights at Blockbuster This week we're going to take you someplace warm, a place where the beer flows like wine, where beautiful women instinctively flock like the salmon of Capistrano. We're talking about a little Late Nights at Blockbuster celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dumb and Dumber. We spend way too much time trading quotes in our Drax award section, but that was to be expected with a classic like this one. Byers mentions Down Periscope for about the 10th time but don't fact check us on that. Intro/Outro music by friend of the podcast Seth Gilbertson. Full Text of ReadingsThursday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time-Thanksgiving Lectionary: 506, 943-947The Saint of the day is Saint James of the MarcheSaint James of the Marche's Story Meet one of the fathers of the modern pawnshop! James was born in the Marche of Ancona, in central Italy along the Adriatic Sea. After earning doctorates in canon and civil law at the University of Perugia, he joined the Friars Minor and began a very austere life. He fasted nine months of the year; he slept three hours a night. Saint Bernardine of Siena told him to moderate his penances. James studied theology with Saint John of Capistrano. Ordained in 1420, James began a preaching career that took him all over Italy and through 13 Central and Eastern European countries. This extremely popular preacher converted many people–250,000 at one estimate–and helped spread devotion to the Holy Name of Jesus. His sermons prompted numerous Catholics to reform their lives, and many men joined the Franciscans under his influence. With John of Capistrano, Albert of Sarteano, and Bernardine of Siena, James is considered one of the “four pillars” of the Observant movement among the Franciscans. These friars became known especially for their preaching. To combat extremely high interest rates, James established montes pietatis—literally, mountains of charity—nonprofit credit organizations that lent money on pawned objects at very low rates. Not everyone was happy with the work James did. Twice assassins lost their nerve when they came face to face with him. James died in 1476, and was canonized in 1726. Reflection James wanted the word of God to take root in the hearts of his listeners. His preaching was directed to preparing the soil, so to speak, by removing any rocks and softening up lives hardened by sin. God's intention is that his word take root in our lives, but for that we need both prayerful preachers and cooperative listeners. Enjoy this Thanksgiving meditation on Saints Philemon and Apphia! Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - LK 12:39-48 - Jesus said to His disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”Then Peter said, “Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?” And the Lord replied, “Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute the food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish the servant severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Memorial of Saint John of Capistrano, Priest Saint John, pray for us! Full Text of ReadingsWednesday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 475The Saint of the day is Saint John of CapistranoSaint John of Capistrano's Story It has been said the Christian saints are the world's greatest optimists. Not blind to the existence and consequences of evil, they base their confidence on the power of Christ's redemption. The power of conversion through Christ extends not only to sinful people but also to calamitous events. Imagine being born in the 14th century. One-third of the population and nearly 40 percent of the clergy were wiped out by the bubonic plague. The Western Schism split the Church with two or three claimants to the Holy See at one time. England and France were at war. The city-states of Italy were constantly in conflict. No wonder that gloom dominated the spirit of the culture and the times. John Capistrano was born in 1386. His education was thorough. His talents and success were great. When he was 26 he was made governor of Perugia. Imprisoned after a battle against the Malatestas, he resolved to change his way of life completely. At the age of 30 he entered the Franciscan novitiate and was ordained a priest four years later. John's preaching attracted great throngs at a time of religious apathy and confusion. He and 12 Franciscan brethren were received in the countries of central Europe as angels of God. They were instrumental in reviving a dying faith and devotion. The Franciscan Order itself was in turmoil over the interpretation and observance of the Rule of St. Francis. Through John's tireless efforts and his expertise in law, the heretical Fraticelli were suppressed and the “Spirituals” were freed from interference in their stricter observance. John of Capistrano helped bring about a brief reunion with the Greek and Armenian Churches. When the Turks captured Constantinople in 1453, John was commissioned to preach a crusade for the defense of Europe. Gaining little response in Bavaria and Austria, he decided to concentrate his efforts in Hungary. He led the army to Belgrade. Under the great General John Hunyadi, they gained an overwhelming victory, and the siege of Belgrade was lifted. Worn out by his superhuman efforts, Capistrano was an easy prey to an infection after the battle. He died on October 23, 1456. Reflection John Hofer, a biographer of John Capistrano, recalls a Brussels organization named after the saint. Seeking to solve life problems in a fully Christian spirit, its motto was: “Initiative, Organization, Activity.” These three words characterized John's life. He was not one to sit around. His deep Christian optimism drove him to battle problems at all levels with the confidence engendered by a deep faith in Christ. 23 DE OCTUBRE - SAN JUAN DE CAPISTRANO, PRESBÍTERO FRANCISCANO
23rd October, 2024 – In this episode of “Saint of the Week,” host Sabrina looks at St. John Capistrano, a famous preacher, theologian, and inquisitor. He earned himself the nickname “the Soldier Saint” when in 1456 at age 70 he led a Crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire at the siege of Belgrade with the Hungarian military commander John Hunyadi. L'articolo E165 | Saint of the Week – Sabrina McKiernan – St. John Capistrano proviene da Radio Maria.
Trivia Night! brings you the brand-new Game of the Week from Crowdpurr's 100% original trivia library.
One night in November 1999, a deputy was driving along a remote mountain road in Southern California when he spotted a car pulled off to the side of the road. The car's engine was still on, and the passenger side door was open, but there didn't appear to be anyone inside the car. Now this was a very remote road, so the deputy assumed that the driver must be having some sort of car trouble, otherwise, why stop here? So the deputy pulled over his cruiser and began walking over to the car to see if they needed help. But before he reached the car, the deputy noticed something dangling out of the passenger side door. He reflexively put his hand on his holster and walked the last few feet up to the car. And when he finally could see into the car, he just froze. It looked like a set from a horror movie. Except this was not fake. For 100s more stories like these, check out our main YouTube channel just called "MrBallen" -- https://www.youtube.com/c/MrBallenIf you want to reach out to me, contact me on Instagram, Twitter or any other major social media platform, my username on all of them is @mrballenSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Cru examine tales of one of WebEater's childhood heroes: Zorro. Is pulp a guilty pleasure, or is there literary merit in tales designed only to delight us? Stories begin at the 17:45 mark and include Zorro on the Z; the far future of the rodentverse; a fan of Zorro, who brings a girl back to his apartment; and women showing up for each other. From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable: Zorro The black-masked, black-caped master swords- man and avenger of old California was the creation of Johnston McCulley. He first appeared in 1919 in the magazine story 'The Curse of Capistrano'. His 'trademark' is the letter Z, which he slashes on the clothes or skin of his enemies. He soon transferred to the cinema screen, where he has been played by such actors as Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power and Antonio Banderas. His name is Spanish for 'fox', from a word that originally meant 'cunning'.Check out our website for a featured story from this week's episode, and be sure to follow us on Instagram (if that's your sort of thing). Have you ever wondered how veterans continue to shape our political landscape post-service? Join me as I sit down with Pablo Capistrano from the El Paso County Democratic Party Veterans Outreach Committee to unravel the depths of veterans' political activism and the pressing need for their voices in today's democracy. Pablo sheds light on the importance of dispelling myths about party allegiance, particularly the notion that military support is a Republican hallmark, and urges voters to align their ballots with their personal values. Our conversation doesn't shy away from the tough questions, as we examine the challenges of engaging constructively with conservatives who don't subscribe to extremist ideologies. I share anecdotes from my own life about the delicate art of discussing politics with friends and family who hold different views. These stories highlight the transformative power of empathy in political discourse, hinting at the potential to bridge divides and foster understanding through respectful conversation. Furthermore, we dissect the worrying trends within the Republican Party, drawing parallels with examples of democratic backsliding internationally and underscoring the crucial role of independent and unaffiliated voters in pushing back against these trends. The episode wraps up with an exploration into the deepening influence of right-wing extremism on local issues, such as school board elections and cannabis legalization movements. Through my discussion with Pablo, we spotlight the significant impact that local community action can have, especially when it comes to protecting the integrity of public education and supporting veterans' needs. If you're looking for a thought-provoking listen that combines personal insights with an impassioned plea for civic engagement, this is the episode for you. www.EPCCPV.org or info@epccpv.org

Gurdip selects the bubbly "It's A Wonderful World" from 1964's "Roustabout" while Justin goes deep on the obscure 1960 Elvis home recording "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano" - not just songwriter Leon Rene and the famous hit version by the Ink Spots, but also the actual event of the Return of the Swallows observed each year at the Mission San Juan de Capistrano. Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Lk 12:13-21 - Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me." He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed Me as your judge and arbitrator?" Then He said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." Then He told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?' And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!"' But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." Memorial of Saint John of Capistrano, Priest Saint John, pray for us! Full Text of ReadingsMonday of the Twenty-ninth Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 473The Saint of the day is Saint John of CapistranoSaint John of Capistrano's Story It has been said the Christian saints are the world's greatest optimists.
