Facing Climate Despair: How Young Artists Inspire Hope for the Future

Art Heals All Wounds

In this concluding episode of the series focusing on artists and climate change, I'm reflecting on the emotional impact of dedicating multiple episodes to the pressing issue of climate change. Initially optimistic about the potential of governmental agendas to address environmental issues, I'm feeling disheartenment, to say the least, due to political challenges that threaten environmental protection efforts. However, I found renewed hope through community engagement and the creativity of young filmmakers at a film screening event I co-hosted.Key Highlights:·       My Personal Journey: I share my shift towards a more eco-conscious mindset after focusing on climate-themed episodes.·       Political Disappointment: My optimism about Biden's climate agenda is challenged by political setbacks, including threats to the EPA and public land protections.·       Community and Art as Hope: I highlight a film screening event I co-hosted with filmmaker Kristin Tièche, featuring local films on environmental topics. Young filmmakers offered a refreshing perspective, focusing on community solutions and creative problem-solving.·       Young Filmmakers' Impact: Despite climate challenges, the youngest participants exhibited hope and determination, emphasizing community engagement as a path forward.·       Appreciation and Future Vision: Thank you, listeners for your support! Stay tuned for the next series which will focus on artists in healthcare fields, beginning in early April.Mentioned Films and Contributors:1.     The Invisible Mammal by Kristin Tièche, focuses on bats.2.     Film by Cynthia Abbott featuring artist Tess Felix and her ocean plastic portraits.3.     Above Ground by Jimmy Ramirez, discusses Oakland's natural waterways.4.     Threads of Change by Ethan Lee, covers fast fashion's environmental effects.5.     What's at Steak by Alisa Ching, Ashlynn Wong, and Sonia Shin, addresses beef overconsumption and global warming.Acknowledgments:·       Special thanks to the podcast editor, Iva Hristova.·       Gratitude to musicians Ketsa and Lobo Loco for the podcast's music.·       Appreciation for listener donations and engagement throughout the series.Next Series Preview:·       After a month-long break, the podcast will return in April with a new series focused on artists in the healthcare sector.Listeners are encouraged to stay connected and join for future episodes as the podcast continues to explore the intersection of art and transformative societal impact.Don't forget to go to my website and leave me YOUR story of belonging to feature on a future episode!Buy Me a Coffee!Links to artists mentioned in the episode.Kristin Tièche, The Invisible MammalCynthia Abbott, Every Second BreathFollow Me!●      Art Heals All Wounds Website●      My Instagram ●      My LinkedIn●      Art Heals All Wounds Instagram

For centuries, Native American art has been viewed through the lens of collectors, art historians, and tourists. But how have Native artists considered their own work? For many tribal artists, there was a financial incentive to create objects that would appeal to non-Natives. But that's changing. Across the U.S., Indigenous artists are fighting stereotypes, protesting cultural appropriation, and carving spaces for their work in museums and galleries beyond those reserved for Native artists. Indigenous Affairs Reporter Debra Utacia Krol, a correspondent for The Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY network, joins The Excerpt to discuss how Native art has grown and evolved.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Sitting down with me today is artist and designer Josh Young. Josh's new book, Artful Home just launched and it's a masterclass in authenticity. He's been collecting and curating since he was 5 years old, and growing up next to a small auction house didn't hurt either. After studying art in Milan, Josh garnered the art of mixing old and new. How to Build Confidence and Learn from Failure: Insights from Clare Southworth In the latest episode of Talking Flutes, Clare delves into the intricate process of learning, improving, and maintaining confidence even when things go wrong. Whether you're a musician, an athlete, or anyone striving for excellence, the principles discussed in this episode are universally applicable. Clare opens the episode by highlighting the importance of a positive mindset in the face of challenges. She emphasises that failure should not be seen as a setback but as a learning opportunity. "You're not failing, you're learning," she says, a mantra that resonates throughout the episode. Drawing parallels between musicians and Olympians, Clare discusses how both groups undergo rigorous training, practice, and performance to achieve their goals. She notes that, like athletes, musicians must prepare meticulously, perform with focus, and debrief honestly to improve continually. The key stages of preparation, performance, and debrief are crucial for success in any field. One of the most compelling parts of the episode is Clare's recounting of her experience at the America's National Flute Association's Young Artists competition. Despite facing discouraging remarks from a fellow competitor, she used the negativity as fuel to strengthen her resolve and ultimately win the competition. This story serves as a powerful reminder that mental strength and resilience are just as important as physical ability. Clare also touches on the significance of mentorship and offers her services to any flute player needing guidance. She believes that sharing knowledge and experience is vital for personal and professional growth. Whether it's preparing for an audition, planning a career, or seeking specific practice techniques, having a mentor can make a significant difference. As the episode concludes, Clare reiterates the importance of staying positive and using every experience as a stepping stone toward success. She encourages listeners to reach out for mentorship and support, emphasising that no one has to navigate their journey alone. If you're looking to build confidence, learn from your mistakes, and achieve your best, this episode of Talking Flutes is a must-listen. Clare Southworth's insights and experiences offer invaluable lessons for anyone committed to personal and professional growth. How might a young person's future look different with exposure to and training in the arts? This is the proposition at the heart of the mission of Milwaukee Youth Arts Center. In this episode of Creative MKE, Elisabeth speaks with Chad Tessmer, the Executive Director at MYAC. They discuss how equitable engagement in the arts has a measurable positive impact on young people's development—and on their entire lives. Located at the corner of Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Walnut Street, MYAC is at the intersection of several Milwaukee neighborhoods including Halyard Park, Brewer's Hill, Harambee, Schlitz Park, and The Deer District. Since its founding in 2005, the space has served as a home to First Stage and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, as well as many other local arts organizations. While MYAC is not in the business of trying to “turn every student into a performer at Carnegie Hall,” the organization seeks to give young people means to explore their voices and express themselves artistically in a safe, inclusive and professional environment. And because the employees at MYAC are creatives themselves (some of them alumni!), they believe in the promise and purpose of the institution, and “pay it forward” every day by shaping high quality and equitable access to transformative arts experiences. As the organization evolves, MYAC seeks new ways to engage with young artists across their developmental trajectories in to support their creative professional development. This series is an expedition to the core of servant leadership as exemplified by our Lord Jesus Christ. In this series, we'll uncover the seven leadership principles that can transform lives and the world, so you can be inspired to lead with a servant's heart, uplift others through your words, and create ripples of positive change. Each of the seven principles will shine a light on the pathway to a servant leader approach, helping you not only walk in Jesus' steps, but also stand on His shoulders and view the higher horizon of your calling. Whether you're scribbling your first draft or putting the finishing touches on your latest manuscript, these principles have the power to deepen your influence and elevate your impact. So if you're ready to step into your role as a change maker — to pen not only stories, but legacies — then “Leading with Grace” is where your next chapter begins! Get ready for an awakening, a rebirth into leadership that serves, heals, and harbors the greatest purpose. A Spirit of Service & Empathy“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.”1 Peter 4:10What if the true essence of our potential is not measured by our individual achievements, but by our dedication to uplifting others? What if our greatest legacy is the kindness and understanding we spread through our acts of service? To kick off the “Leading with Grace” series, let's examine the example set by a member of our own community: John Alexander, whose life exemplifies a spirit of service and empathy. John is a Texas resident, an author, and a cherished member of the Christian Authors Network, and he embodies the spirit of service through his passion for poetry and storytelling. After a successful career in high tech, John turned his full attention to writing, crafting stories and poems that have captured the imaginations and hearts of children and adults alike. But it's at the Frisco Senior Center where John's impact truly shines. He regularly shares his poems there, offering words of hope, encouragement, and joy to everyone present. John's book of poetry, Timeless Tales: Rhymes from the Heart, and his Quiet Time Rhymes series are more than collections of verses — they are his gifts of empathy and understanding to the world. And his dedication reminds us of an essential truth: Your spark of potential is God's gift to you; how you nurture it and serve others is your gift back to Him and to the world.Through his poetry readings, John transforms moments into memories, proving that service and empathy can amplify our impact, touching lives in ways we might never fully know.Thank you, John, for being such a luminous example of kindness and creativity in our community! How Will You Nurture & Channel Your Spark? Now it's your turn. How can you channel your unique gifts into service? How can you allow empathy to deepen your connection to those around you and enhance your journey as an author? Here's a simple step you can take today: Share your talent with someone who could use a moment of joy. This could be reading, writing, singing, or simply listening. Remember, the essence of service lies in sincerity and love. JOHN'S BIO:John Alexander lives in Texas with his beautiful wife and his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. He spent his childhood in a small town in east Texas. For hundreds of years, the Jewish community in Spain faced persecution and coercion to convert to Christianity. Compulsory debates and violent upheavals led to the 1391 pogroms, which became known as one of the worst massacres in Medieval history, forcing hundreds and thousands of Jews to be baptized and become Christians. The story is fictitious and based on true events and characters like the Archbishop of Burgos, Spain, Paul (Pablo) de Santa Maria, who was once Solomon, the Rov of Burgos. He led the Church on a crusade to persecute the Jews in 15th-century Spain, with restrictive laws and inciting riots. Rabbi Jacob Abotrani, an inspiration to the secret Jews, was in trouble with the Church. His unfinished Megilat Esther will be the guiding force of young Dovid Abotrani to trust in Hashem wherever he goes. This story is based on a Gershon Granzler story found in Galus Melodies, entitled The Young Artist.
