In the previous episodes, we mostly focused on the topics like school life or recruiting . But, even with all the classes, events and assignments, There is still plenty of free time that you can decide how to use. It could be after school hours, weekends and holidays, or breaks between semesters. How you spend those free time can really change your overall MBA experience. We invite Yiran Huang, who is currently a second-year MBA student from Chicago Booth, to share how she manages her off-campus free time with us.
MBA is a journey for a new career path. And to find a better career path, many MBA students visit various companies and meet numerous people to learn more about different industries. To facilitate this point, many MBA programs or clubs do “professional trek,” which means they organize a trip for companies. For example, Tech Trek goes to big tech companies in the west coast and marketing trek goes to Chicago to visit several famous marketing companies. It really varies by schools or clubs. So let’s talk about this more with Sendy,Chen a second year MBA student from University of Southern California, or USC Marshall.
MBA is such an inspiring experience. It’s more than just getting a good academic result or finding a great job. More importantly, It’s a place where you can meet very interesting people from around the world, learn about their stories, and make meaningful, lifelong friendships. That being said, a lot of these bondings are happening outside of the classroom. For example, during social events. That’s why there are so many social events in the MBA. In this episode, we invite Warittha Chalanonniwat, a second-year MBA student from Duke Fuqua, to share her MBA social life experience with us.
Taking an MBA program in the US is a big, huge decision. And if you already have a family, it becomes 100 times more difficult. Today’s topic is about MBA and Family. Many international students had to decide whether they came to the US with family or not. Some partners may give up their career. Some couples ended up living separately. If they have a baby, how would they handle all difficulties in the country where they’ve never been. What a crazy situation. Let’s welcome Kazrin Khairul Anuar, a second-year MBA student from MIT Sloan, and listen to how he dealt with these issues.
You cannot talk about student life without mentioning homework and assignments. In MBA particularly, a lot of assignments are group projects based, which means, you have to work with other students and rely on each other to finish it together. It’s not easy for international students to participate or contribute under the group project setting due to a variety of reasons. We invite Doyoun Kim, a second-year MBA student from Cornell Johnson, to share his group project experience and to tell you more about why the group project is important as a part of your MBA experience.
The pandemic has changed the world a lot in 2020. People started to wear masks everyday and canceled their meetings with their friends, family and even wedding ceremonies. MBA is no exception. Most Business schools are doing virtual classes. Recruiters don’t come to the campus anymore. Many social events have been canceled or reduced. In other words, the Class of 2022 MBA students’ experience would be entirely different from other classes. With Jun Takahashi, 1st year MBA student from Ross, University of Michigan, we talk about what challenges they have and how they‘ve been going through this unprecedented time.
As the most popular post-MBA career path for MBA students, recruiting for consulting is very competitive. Therefore, it is very important to have a clear recruiting strategy to be successful. We invite Kelly Song, an MBA2 student from Tuck Business School at Dartmouth to share her consulting internship recruiting experience from networking to case preparation with us.
Many students come to business school not only to learn academics such as accounting, finance, strategy, or marketing, but also to look for career changes and get a new job. That’s why people spend most of their time to prepare for the summer internship recruiting right after starting the semester. However, it’s a tremendously difficult process for international students to compete with domestic students. We invite Chrissa da Gomez, an MBA2 student from UC Berkeley Haas business school, to share her summer internship recruiting process with us.
Even though many people think MBA programs are about networking and getting a better opportunity for a job, we can’t discuss MBA life without academics. Each MBA program has unique core classes and numerous electives. Also, having a brisk discussion and sharing ideas in the classroom is another attractive feature of MBA classes. However, there are many difficulties too. Many professors cold-call students in the class or use the casing teach method with which international students are not familiar. We invite Ryan Yu, an MBA2 student from Harvard Business School, to share his academic experience with us.
There are many kinds of clubs that can help your MBA journey. From professional clubs to fun and social clubs, you can have various opportunities to learn new things during your MBA life. However, it’s impossible to join every club you want to participate in; you should prioritize and make some tough choices.. Everything during MBA life is about how to distribute your time. We discuss a wiser way to join and use clubs during MBA life with Jung Lee from UCLA Anderson.
Some B-schools have a trek before the program starts or during the semester, travel purely led by students. Unlike professional treks, you do not need to worry about recruiting or networking, you just enjoy meeting new friends and learning new cultures. Incoming students can also listen to 2nd year students’ experiences and get lots of tips for their MBA lives. We invite Weber Lu from Northwestern Kellogg to share his KWEST experience, one of the most popular non-academic opportunities at Kellogg.
Orientation is officially the first time you meet your classmates from all over the world. You may be excited about meeting new people and starting the new chapter in your life, but at the same time, feel nervous. We invite Hiroki Mochizuki from Japan to talk about his stories during the MBA orientation period and share his advice on ice-breaking and getting close with new friends.
Moving to another country for your MBA is a big deal. There are so many things that need to be considered and be taken care of before school starts. We invite Neha Tadichetty from India to talk about her experience of preparing for the MBA journey and share her advice on how to deal with housing options and how to adjust to a new environment.
