Eric Toda, Global Head of Social Marketing at Facebook, joins Jerry to share his story of growing up as a 4th generation Japanese American, experiencing racism and stereotypes in the corporate world, and changing the conversation around race for his children. Learn about how his viral ADWeek article came to be and what he's doing to continue the fight against the injustices through LAAUNCH, TAAF, and his current role in the marketing industry. In this episode: Multi-cultural background and upbringing Back story of the ADWeek article Changing the conversation around race for his children How his experiences and work portfolio played a role in speaking up for injustices Meet Eric, in his own words:Hi, I'm a marketing executive, angel investor, and active advocate for the Asian American community. I've held previous brand and digital marketing leadership roles at Stitch Fix, Gap Inc, Airbnb, Snapchat, and Nike and my work has been awarded by Cannes Lions, Webbys, Clios, amongst others for combining purpose, creativity, and business results. As an Investor at Hyphen Capital and an independent advisor I have been very grateful to help build disruptive brands like Yumi, Wardrobe, Upaway, Fyllo, amongst many others. The most proud work i've done is for my community. I proudly sit on the Board of Directors for Reimagine and LAAUNCH (Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change), the advisory council for TAAF (The Asian American Foundation), the advisory board of directors for the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and most recently I've been using my voice and platform for the #StopAsianHate movement in the business world to speak up for those that look like me. I launched my advocacy in Adweek earlier this year by writing a piece called: “My People Are Dying In Silence — And I'm Here With A Megaphone” calling out the marketing and advertising industry not just to care, but to act. My work for the community has been featured on NBC News, CBS, FOX, The Wall Street Journal, and CNBC I was one of the first 100 executives to sign the StandWithAsianAmericans letter in the Wall Street Journal. Previously, I was a reporter on The Post's national politics desk, covering diplomacy and the State Department, campaign finance, lobbying, election administration, voting rights, political influence operations and other topics. I was formerly a reporter on The Washington Post Fact Checker, with a focus on fact-checking the 2016 presidential campaign, the Obama and Trump White Houses and congressional leadership. Before joining The Post, I was a government accountability reporter at the Arizona Republic. In my free time, I volunteer as president of the Asian American Journalists Association, which I joined as an 18-year-old aspiring journalist. I've been on the national board of AAJA since 2013, as national secretary, senior vice president and now going on my second term as president. I was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to Guam when I was 7, and was raised there until I went to Emory University for college.Connect with MichelleInstagram @myhleeTwitter @myhleeAbout AAJAAAJA is a professional nonprofit that was founded in 1981 to create a network for AAPI journalists and to make sure AAPIs are accurately and fairly represented in media coverage. Korean American journalist CeFaan Kim joins us to share his story of growing up in Philadelphia, what drove him to choose a career in journalism, and what principles guide him in his work as he has worked tirelessly for 20+ years in sharing stories, giving a voice to the voiceless. Congratulations to CeFaan on joining the ABC News team as a correspondent!Meet CeFaanSince joining WABC-TV in 2015, CeFaan has covered a wide range of important stories. During the pandemic shutdown, he reported nightly from the streets of New York City, speaking with health care workers, gravediggers, farmers and others impacted by the health crisis. CeFaan also reported daily on the Black Lives Matter protests that followed the murder of George Floyd. He covered the 2020 presidential election recount in Pennsylvania, the Chelsea terrorist bombing and protests of President Trump’s travel ban at JFK airport. CeFaan has consistently reported on poverty within the AAPI community, including an exclusive report in 2016 on Asian-American seniors who were riding casino buses to help make ends meet and how the pandemic has impacted Chinatown in NYC.Throughout the pandemic CeFaan has been at the forefront covering the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes, interviewing and telling the stories of countless victims. His reporting helped spark a national conversation on anti-Asian hate and led to the NYPD reversing its posture on how it communicated its investigatory process on anti-Asian hate crimes. CeFaan has contributed to multiple primetime specials on the topic including, the ABC News Live special “Stop the Hate: The Rise in Violence Against Asian Americans,” the 20/20 special “Murder in Atlanta” and most recently, ABC Owned Television Stations’ news special, “Our America: Asian Voices” which rebroadcasts across the station group’s owned channels this weekend, and is set to air on National Geographic on May 20 and available on Hulu at the end of the month. Before joining WABC-TV, CeFaan was a reporter for News12 Westchester/Hudson Valley and NY1 News, where he extensively covered local politics and breaking news. Kristina Manansala joins Jerry on Episode 113 to share her personal journey of being the youngest in her Filipino American family, to studying neuroscience, and now helping to bridge the healthcare access gap particularly within the Asian American community. She will be graduating from the USC Keck School of Medicine with her MPH degree in biostatistics and epidemiology soon. #FightOnMeet Kristina, in her own words:Hello! My name is Kristina (Krissy). My parents immigrated from the Philippines to the United States and I was born and raised in the Bay Area. In my free time, I loooove yoga, drawing, baking and going on long hikes with my two pups, Cupcake and Gelato (Cupcake is a Chihuahua and Gelato is a German Shepherd!). I'm quite passionate about health care and research. I studied Neuroscience at UC San Diego, researched metabolic regulatory pathways at Scripps Research Institute and led medical relief projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central America. Right now, I am wrapping up my Master's of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at USC and am working on COVID-19 research projects at a Biotech company. I am very grateful for my mom's sacrifices, and as such I'm the only person in my family to graduate from college. Within the past few years, I've been on a journey to discovery my identity and value beyond professional or academic accomplishments. For this episode I take a break from our narrative to bring you a collaboration that I had teamed up with Steve from Spartan History Podcast to record. We went into this conversation without any scripts and just a rough plan of what we wanted to cover. Steve’s series, Spartan History Podcast, takes a deep dive into the history of the Spartans, beginning back in Mythological times. He is currently in the stages of how the institutions and practices that would define the Spartans were developing. I would encourage everyone to check out his series as I am sure you will learn some elements about the Spartans that I bet you didn’t know about before. For this episode we begin by talking about ourselves and how we got into the podcasting world. We also look at what drew up towards Ancient Greek history. The conversation then evolved of many different tangents around Greek history, but we would come to focus on three many areas. I would look at the founding of Democracy in Athens with the early stages of its development. Steve then takes us for a closer look at Lycurgus and the question of if he was a historical figure. We then turn to the Greek and Persian War looking at who out of Athens and Sparta had been the most influential in their victory of Persia. The collaboration has been split over two parts, with this episode being part 1. Part two is hosted on Steve’s show over at Spartan History Podcast. Below are a number of links to help you find his show and his social media pages, though he is easily found on all good podcast platforms.www.spartanhistorypodcast.comSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2oYdMfzDbVzJUrddjpFF6eiTunes: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/spartan-history-podcast/id1489152895Twitter: @Spartan_HistoryFacebook: Spartan History PodcastSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/castingthroughancientgreece)
