How Baba tasted the nectar of love in salt & bread

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 27, 2021 8:06

Ram Ram and a warm welcome to another episode of Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. It's been a while since we connected but we are back again with many more interesting stories about our beloved Neem Karoli Baba, also known as Maharaj Ji among his followers. Can salt ever be sweet? Isn't the composition of salt and sugar totally different from each other? Well turns out everytime a poor devotee offered Neem Karoli Baba Indian flatbread or Roti with noon or salt, which in India is known to be a poor man's dish, he would exclaim in joy and delight saying how sweet the salty combination tasted and how it was way better than the sweetest nectar ever. Why did Maharaj ji do such a strange thing?  Long story short, because Maharaj Ji always rose above the material taste of the food offered to him and cherished the simplicity, affection, devotion and faith of his devotees who offered him the simple food to him. On the other hand, if an opulent follower would try to impress Maharaj Ji by offering a plate full of 56 different types of delicacies, known as Chappan bhog in India, which is generally offered to God's and saintly people, he would simply reject it. That's because that the offering was made out of show off, arrogance and a desire to be recognised by him. He was well aware of the fact that opulent offerings lacked simplicity and the nectar of love.  Here are some stories that elucidate how much Maharaj Ji cherished simplicity.  When Maharaj Ji first went to the hill station of Kainchidham in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand in India, a place where his famous ashram and temple is situated now, he visited the home of a devotee called Purnanand Tiwari. Upon reaching Purnanand Tiwari's home, he shouted out loud in hindi, 'Maai noon roti lao'Which meant, oh mother of the home bring me some salt and bread please. When that was offered to him, he would be praised the simple mean to no end, describing how sweet, delicious and divine it was.  Likewise once he was traveling with a devotee known as Jeevan Baba. Jeevan Baba was driving his cycle rickshaw and Maharaj Ji was sitting on it. They both had a fulfiling meal before they began their journey. However, Maharaj Ji suddenly asked Jeevan Baba to stop at a poor, old woman's hut which was nearby. He called out to the old woman and demanded he be fed noon roti or salt with bread. The old woman embarassed of her poverty and with tears in her eyes offered noon roti to Maharaj ji. She was ashamed because that's all she could afford to offer and at first thought Maharaj Ji was mocking her poverty. But Maharaj ji ate it all up with the glee and delight of a little child. He then embraced the old woman and said in Hindi, Aah ha ha Anand aa gaya mai, which when means oh wow mother, I loved and enjoyed every bit of it.  The old woman's tears of embarassment changed into tears of joy. How lucky she was to have fed Maharaj ji in her own home and with her own hands. Many would have given millions to have that experience. In my humble opinion the old woman was richer than the richest of all mortal beings just because she received rhe infinite wealth of Maharaj Ji's love and affection in her own home.  Similarly once when Maharaj Ji visited Mukunda or Prakash Chandra Joshi's home in Allahabad, he demanded for baasi roti or stale bread...that is roti that was made in the morning. Maharaj ji knew beforehand that Mukunda's home only had stale bread that day. Hundreds of devotees had earlier wanted to feed him the choicest of Indian delicacies but he had declined. He went straight to Mukunda's home to enjoy his fill of baasi roti or stale bread. Needless to say Mukunda was the happiest man on earth that day. There's another amazing story where the wealthy owner of a mill requested Maharaj Ji to have lunch at his home. Maharaj Ji agreed and visited his place. When the mill owner asked Maharaj Ji what he desired for lunch, Maharaj ji said simply a bowl of daal or lentils and roti or bread. But the wealthy man ridiculed Maharaj Ji's choice and behaved arrogantly. He asked his servants to make the most delicious dishes and sweets for lunch.  Maharaj ji calmly said well then, let the dogs enjoy the meal.  And no sooner had all the delicacies been prepared, some stray dogs ventured into the wealthy man's kitchen through an open door and started eating the food there. The arrogance of the wealthy mill owner was shattered then and there.   Another rich man from Nainital offered Maharaj ji food in silver plates and golden bowls with dishes made from expensive dry fruits and ingredients. Maharaj ji instantly knew that it wasn't a plate of love rather a plate of show off that was desperately seeking a sign of recognition or approval from him. So e took everything that was in that silver plate and poured it into another simple plate and mixed it all up in front of the wealthy man, as if indicating that all the food offered out of pride and a sense of seeking recognition was nothing but just a concoction of material ingredients. He then summoned his humble driver and told him, look I am hungry. Will you feed me in your home?  His driver lovingly took Maharaj Ji to his home where they once again enjoyed noon roti or simple salt and bread.   Maharaj ji, himself was famous for feeding hundreds of people in his ashram in Kainchidham. Even when an ocean of people would visit his ashram, he would instruct everybody to be fed sumptuously with plates full of simple yet delicious poori and sabzi, which is fried indian bread and a delicacy of Indian mixed vegetables.  However, while everyone would enjoy poori and sabzi, he would simply stock to noon roti or salt and bread.  Many wondered why he did that.  Well, it was his way of reminding us that in simplicity lies the greatest joy of life. And that divinity does not reside in rich opulent offerings, rather it embraces purity and simplicity of the heart and selfless love. He was also telling us that sense gratification such as enjoying a rich taste can give us a momentary kick of joy and pleasure, but real ecstacy and contentment lies in being uncomplicated, simple and living a life of surrender to the higher taste or nectar of love. Time and again Maharaj ji made it clear that he was indeed a prisoner of his devotee's love for him, and that he doesnt need anythinf from them besides that. What gave him immense joy and happiness was a sense of total surrender to love and simplicity. How beautiful is the Leela of our beloved Maharaj Ji. Isn't it?  That was it for now. I am your narrator Sourav Roy and I hope you enjoyed these beautiful stories of Maharaj Ji . The mention of Kovid/Covid in the Hanuman Chalisa

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 7, 2020 4:25

Namaste and welcome to another episode of Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. Neem Karoli Baba or Maharaj Ji said that every line of the Hanuman Chalisa, composed by the Indian poet Shri Tulasidas, is a maha mantra. Now, what exactly is a maha mantra? The word maha in Sanskrit and Hindi means the greatest and the most potent of all. So a maha mantra is the most powerful sacred chant for deliverance. As author Stephen Knapp explains in simple words, the chanting of a maha mantra uplifts a person's mind and life condition in multiple manners. Every line of the Hanuman Chalisa is indeed such a mahamantra. In today's testing times, when the world is battling a pandemic, intolerance, terrorism, fundamentalism and self-centered politicians, there's plenty of negativity to shake our existence. The Hanuman Chalisa is the perfect antidote for that. Let's take the pandemic caused by the COVID 19 virus. There's a remarkable message hidden in two lines of the Hanuman Chalisa for all of us to acknowledge, realize, and celebrate. Tulsidas writes, Jam, Kuber Digpal Jahan te Kavi Kovid kahi sake kahan te. Did you hear that? The word Kovid is in the lines above. Although the Hindi meaning of Kovid differs from the English one, the overall message of finding refuge at the feet of Lord Hanuman from the fear of death is loud and clear. Let's understand the above lines from the Hanuman Chalisa. In Jam kuber digpal jahan te, kavii kovid kahi sake kahan te, Tulasidas says Oh Lord Hanuman, even Jam or the God of Death, Kuber, the god of wealth and Digpal, or the guardians of all 10 directions, have to surrender to your immaculate glory and sing your praises. No poet's lofty composition or kovid in Hindi is good enough to describe your supreme power as the eternal protector of everything and everyone. Not even death dares to come close to you since Yama or the God of death falls at your feet, begging for mercy. Let's extrapolate that to the pandemic situation. The Covid19 Coronavirus has brought about the fear of death and loss from an invisible enemy, in everybody's mind. While the scientific world races ahead to find a cure, we take the right precautions meanwhile and fall back on our devotion to Lord Hanuman to remove the fear of death from the COVID pandemic. Neem Karoli Baba always said be sincere and don't hurt anyone. I am sure he would have wanted all his devotees to act responsibly and take the right precautions when moving in public. Everybody's life is equal and no one's life is lesser precious than yours. Just as Lord Rama built a bridge to Lanka with a massive army of monkeys, we all have to build a bridge over this sea of COVID pandemic by collaborating together with each other. And don't forget Tulasidas ji's precious lines from the Hanuman Chalisa, Jam kuber digpal jahan te Kavi kovid kahi sake kahan te, Let's all pray to Lord Hanuman and Neem Karoli Baba to give us the strength to defeat the COVID pandemic and keep Jam or Death away from near and dear ones. I'm your narrator, Sourav Roy and I'll be back soon with more stories of Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. How Baba taught an arrogant man what selfless charity is

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2020 6:15

Hello and Namaste, A warm welcome to Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. In this episode, we will share with you another story of Baba's incredible leela and his unique way of reminding us of leaving our ego out when helping others. Baba believed if you do good unto others, then you shouldn't be talking about it, dont even expect any rewards or recognition or any kind of praises being showered at you. Otherwise the help is not unconditional and just a feel good loop for your self Baba used to say in Hindi, Sab Ek ek hain aur sabka maalik Ram hain, which means we are all one and everybody's saviour is Lord Rama. He said, The person who is helping and the person who is being helped are not different from each other. In fact, there are no others. We are all one. Often, we forget this simple message from Baba and our ego tricks us. We start thinking I did this great charitable act or because of me, the sufferings of the poor were diminished. But in reality, we are just small actors playing our roles in the grand leela of life, and maybe sometimes not realising that we forgot to remain humble and succumbed to our pride and self-importance. However, for an exalted saint and mystic master like Neem Karoli Baba, nothing is hidden. He has his own system of checks and balances and performs unimaginable leelas at the right time to separate the wheat from the chaff. Here's a story on how Baba reminded an arrogant follower that there is no place for an egotistical and narcissistic 'I am the doer' feeling when one performs an act of charity. Once when Neem Karoli Baba was spending time in the beautiful Indian hill station of Nainital, a few followers gathered around him and started asking him questions on divinity and the material nature of the world. Baba was answering them patiently when suddenly a devotee entered the room and almost immediately announced that he had brought with him a good amount of money to hand it over to Baba. Baba looked at him and turned down his offer. He told him in Hindi, Nahi Chahiye, yeh paisa kis kaam ka, which means I don't want it. Take it away. This money is of no use to me. But the man insisted and said in Hindi, Kisi bhi kaam mein laga lena baba. Gareebon ko khila dena, which meant, Use this money for any purpose. Feed the poor with this. Baba remained silent for a while, then refused one more time ,telling him in Hindi, Le jaa issey tu, Kya gareebon ke naam se chadah raha hain. Ja tera dikhawa nahin chahiye, which meant Just take it away from here and dont make the poverty of the downtrodden an excuse to feel important. Go away, no one needs your misplaced sense of show off. The man became even more adamant and told Baba that he shouldn't be refusing the money which could feed many poor people. He said it had taken him a lot of effort to raise that money Baba, the eternal magician and master craftsman of mystic leelas, then told him, fine if you think that the money which you have brought is that powerful, then go buy me Sev. with all this money. Sev is an inexpensive Indian snack made of chickpea paste and turmeric. The man replied but its so late at night, where will I find sev now? Baba said, Really, I thought you said this money is magical and it will solve problems for me and help me in feeding people.. You said I could use it anywhere? But if it cant even get me some inexpensive sev now then of what use is it to me or anybody? Baba did not accept even a penny from the man and instructed him to keep the money back in his pocket. The above story was recalled by a devotee named Kishan Tiwari and the story has been documented by Vinod Shukla from Mainpuri village for Dastak Media channel in India. As you can see, Baba's refusal to accept the money was his way of humbling the arrogant follower, sending him a clear message that if you do something good for anyone then do it with your heart and not for any show. Keep your self or ego out of it. A compassionate cause or purpose doesn't need publicity or applause. It just needs Baba's blessings. And when we start looking for reasons to justify why we have to show off or draw attention to our charitable cause then we are gibing more credence to external factors than our faith in Baba and his blessing. And Baba's message in Hindi is very clear. Charity is not an activity. It is a mentality. An inner disposition that expresses itself humbly and not with a loud bang. Those who consider charity to be merely an activity, focus not on the inner spirit but the other show. They obsess over how big and noticeable is the charity they give, and how much recognition and glorification they get. Such charity is nothing but a gift to one's own ego and a characteristic of the ungodly. That was another glorious tale of Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. How Baba kindled love and trust in a thief's heart

Hello and Namaste,  A warm welcome to Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion.   In this episode, you will know more about Neem Karoli Baba's life and times when he used to live in the Neeb Karori village. Baba led a simple and humble life. He probably had the most basic home in the entire village. We're talking about an Indian village in one of the most economically challenged and disregarded parts of British India in the 1900s. But despite not having any material possessions, Baba was a beaming lighthouse of contentment.  He would spend hours doing intense sadhana or deep meditation. And when he was not meditating, he would spend his entire time with the villagers, listening to their problems, suggesting practical solutions, and carrying out numerous leelas or miracles of love to diminish their suffering Baba was one with his surroundings and the fabric of space and time, Nothing was hidden from him. He would know of people's intentions just by looking at them.  It is written in ancient Indian texts that when you look into the eyes of a true mystic, then the real intentions of your mind, reflect in the mystic's own awareness, in exactly the same manner, like reflections of objects in water.  Good luck to those who go with one-sided delusional stories emerging from their own belief system and think enlightened mystics and masters such as Neem Karoli Baba can be fooled. To the rich, Baba would simply remind that all the money is worthless if it not used to serve humanity. To the poor, Baba would say, your greatest wealth is your ability to work hard, be truthful to yourself, and the power to change your destiny.   He would often say If you are sincere to yourself and your existence, the universe will reward your sincerity and truthfulness by opening up unbelievable doors for you. You would have then scripted miracle right from scratch. Baba biggest mantra was Love all, serve all and feed all. All of that with sincerity and purity of the mind.. If you would go to him and tell hiim, you know baba I was in love with my partner but now I have fallen out of it because he or she doesn't earn well enough, or is not serving my purpose and I think my partner will never change, then he would ask you, is that love or is that some sort of a business relation? Because he knew that conditional love was nothing but a disservice to one's own spiritual self in not letting love blossom in one's heart for it's highest purpose. Baba always said, Love dipped in compassion has the power to be the best cure for all maladies. Of course, we live in a highly calculative world. People around us will point out all logical reasons of the intellect to suppress our inner voice of love, giving much evidence and examples of failures in a relationship. She did this she did that. He did this, he did that. You deserve better, your mistakes are nothing as compared to his or hers.. You did the right thing in being harsh and unkind. So on and so forth. Basically, letting fear-inducing justifications to trump over our own true nature of love and forgiveness, which Baba constantly reminded us of. Baba said love is the biggest medicine in the entire universe and the worst punishment that you can give to someone and to your own self is to throw the person out of your heart. To block your ability to love and forgive. Thats why, to spurned and rejected lovers, inimical neighbors and people fighting with each other, Baba would say in Hindi,  “Pyaar karo. Bas pyaar karo.”  which means, just love, do nothing else. dont do business, Let love and compassion lead you to a better understanding of yourself, kindness, and acceptance.. His fame as a miracle worker and a saint with mystic perfections of mind over matter started spread like a wildfire.  People from and around Neeb Karori village started flocking to him. But of what use is publicity or fame or money to a man who is contentented with sleeping on the floor and drinking water from a well. He was not into that zone of I, me, myself or look at how great I am, as we often see in many around us. . He was the king of loving acceptance.  Thiefs, dacoits, robbers, criminals, charlatans, crooks, all rushed to him for guidance and a gentle tap of love and forgiveness,. Just as much as priests, sadhus, saints, householders and thousands of ordinary people did. Over a period of time, the dusty and rustic hamlet of Neeb Karori became a shrine of mercy and kindness, washed by the tears of the suffering and dried by the sunshine of Neem Karoli Baba's warmth and love. Here's a real story documented by the people of the village, that shows Baba's simple and unconditional love. Every now and then, Baba would organize a little village fair. He would inspire everybody from the village and nearby areas to participate and mingle with each other.  People would assemble to sing, dance, set up stalls of homemade goodies and sell local artifacts and produce.  Baba would tell everyone to trust each other and keep the doors of their homes and shops open for as many days as the fair lasted. He would say trust yourself to trust yourself. Only then can you trust others. Build bridges of love and respect and not of doubt and fear.  If you approach each other with love and not suspicion and believe that everybody deserves a chance of goodness just like you do, then the universe will ensure that you also receive only goodness in return. For only when you give without any fear or any ulterior motive, will you then receive with equal magnanimity. Once a thief from a neighboring village came to the fair. There were too many people around him and not a single spot where he wouldn't be noticed stealing. Finally, the thief found an unguarded fruit stall. He thought he would steal the most expensive fruit and resell it to make good money.  He quickly stole a big watermelon and ran away. But as he was crossing over the railway tracks to get on to the other side of the village his foot got stuck. He tried very hard to free himself but nothing worked. He was becoming desperate because he knew sooner or later he would be caught. Eventually, he started crying out for help, saying Baba pls forgive me. Forgive me that I took advantage of people who no wrong to me. Within moments, two men appeared on the scene. They said they had been sent by Neem Karoli Baba who knew that the thtief was stuck there for hours.   One of the men said, Baba says why steal when everything is being offered with love. You should have just asked for the fruit and the villagers would have gifted it to you out of love. What would you prefer, stealing this fruit and feeding your family once with the money that you make out of it, or winning our hearts and every villager helping you to find a sustainable profession? The thief pleaded for mercy and forgiveness. At this point, the second man told him that Baba had asked for him to eat the watermelon right then and here, and to share it with them as well. The thief immediately did what he was asked to. Within no time, his foot became free.  He ran back to Baba and fell at his feet. Baba took him in his arms and said, How can a stolen fruit be sweeter than one which is shared out of love with everybody? He then said, ask with love, receive with love and after that share with love. The owner of the fruit stall who was standing by then gave more fruits to the thief and said don't worry brother. It took time for all of us to understand that Baba conducts this festival in the village, for us to not only open our homes but also our hearts.  We are just happy that you will return from our village with Baba's blessings, our love, and more fruits for your family. The thief promised not to seal again and find a more respectable way of sustaining himself and his family. That was another glorious tale of Neem Karoli Baba's leela and miracle of love and compassion. We will return soon with more stories of Baba's love. Understanding Siddhis and Leelas

Play Episode Listen Later May 17, 2020 7:01

Hello and Namaste,  A warm welcome to Neem Karoli Baba'smiracles of love and compassion.  In the previous episode, you heard how Neem Karoli Baba was thrown out of a train by its British conductor for traveling without a ticket. And despite numerous attempts after that, the train wouldn't move at all.  Finally, when the railway officials promised Baba, that they'll be more respectful to sadhus and saints, and also build a train station right at the spot where they threw him out, Baba blessed them to continue their journey.   But he stayed back in the Nib Karori village, where he meditated for 18 years and attained numerous spiritual siddhis or mystic powers of the mind and the spirit. Talking about siddhis or mystic powers of the mind, It is important to clarify here that Himalayan yogis and sadhus attain mystical abilities through advanced yogic meditation and ancient spiritual practices.  There is absolutely no dependence on psychotropic or trippy consciousness or mood-altering substances such as marijuana, or mushrooms, as many wrongly believe and promote.  These could work but who knows?  For genuine Indian mystics and spiritual lighthouses such as Neem Karoli Baba, Shirdi Sai Baba, YoganandaParamhansa, Ramkrishna Paramahansa, and many more, it was all about getting high on the divine source of life.   These Indian mystics are also perhaps textbook examples of mystical magnificence and proof of mind over matter.   However, obtaining a mysterious or magical siddhi or power of complete control and perfection of the mind, was nothing more than just a paranormal ability of the earthly or mundane plane for them.    They never gave much importance to it, let alone flash it or encourage it as an end goal of spiritual mastery.  Unfortunately, many in the West often push and peddle this esoteric bunk that Indian siddhis or mystical perfections of Himalayan masters are some sort of superhuman brilliance or knack.  Oh well, the pitfalls of little knowledge mixed with the pangs for the paranormal.  The bigger question here is,  if all these mystical abilities or Siddhis of the Himalayan masters are only important at the mundane or earthly level, then why even bother attaining them?   What for? To stop train engines and force railway officials to build railway stations for villagers? Uh, huh, not true.  Mystical saints like Neem KaroliBaba would often manifest events and circumstances that served a higher spiritual and worldly purpose.   They did so by using their own spiritual capacity to play with the fabric of space and time. A remarkable spiritual ability known as leela in Sanskrit.    So these saints and yogis used their siddhis or spiritual faculties along with their mystic perfections to manifest leelas or regular day to day events that had a greater cause.  Stopping the train and not letting it move was Baba's leela to send a loud and clear message to the British officials who were then ruling India,  that every human being is equal and deserves respect and dignity.  Saint or no saint, everybody's presence on this earth is precious. The train station for the village of Nib Karori that came out of that episode, was a bonus for the poor and neglected villagers. There are many other examples of Baba's leelas or miracles of love and compassion while he remained in the village.  Here's one of them.  One day a man called Buddh Sen approached Baba at his cottage.  Buddh Sen had heard of a mystical saint meditating in the village and thought it would be a good idea to meet him.  He had been depressed for a very long time. Despite trying for years, his wife and him were unable to have any children. They had given up on hopes of having a family of their own.  Baba told Buddh Sen that he would be blessed with a child, provided he promises to dig a well in the village.   Hmm... What did a well have to do with having children? It is said that the higher purpose of the leela of a mystic is best known only to him. Baba knew precisely what was the greater good in this. Within a few weeks, Buddh Sen's wife got pregnant. And in time, she gave birth to a beautiful boy, called Ram Sevak.  As promised, Buddh Sen dug a well in the village. Now, Nib Karori was a poor village. During the days of the British Raj, it was completely ignored as it served no political or economic importance. So the British government did not bother to develop any facilities there. The village even lacked basic amenities like drinking water. Turns out the well dug by Buddh Sen was a big boon for the village community.  It became an important source of fresh underground water in an already struggling village.  But going beyond the worldly logic of quid pro quo, or one good in exchange of another,  Baba's leela here was tomatch Buddh Sen's spiritual intent to nurture and nourish his own family by granting him an opportunity to provide a source of relief and nourishment for hundreds of families.   Baba knew that both Buddh Sen and the village needed each other's benevolence and support.  What followed with the birth of Buddh Sen's son, Ram Sevak,, was a pure miracle of love and compassion, orchestrated by Neem Karoli Baba.  The well and the ancestral home ofBuddh Sen and Ram Sevak can still be found in the Nib Karori village. Vinod Shukla, one of India's leading biographers of Neem Karoli Baba and editor in chief of Dastak Media, has traced the well and the family of Buddh Sen in Nib Karori. We have posted Dastak Media'sYoutube link of the well in the description of this episode.   https://youtu.be/ubIhcGFk    That was it for today.   We will be back with more miracles of love and compassion carried out by NeemKaroli Baba.  If you have any specific requests or questions, you can send your emails to loveneemkaroli@gmail.com or connect with us on Instagram by following our profile, neemancipation.  I am your narrator Sourav Roy and I hope you enjoyed this episode of Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion with me. The mystical story behind Baba's name

Hello And Namaste, A warm welcome to Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. Until now you heard how young Lakshman Das's parents married him off at the tender age of 11. But Lakshman Das had other plans and he left home right after the marriage.. He wandered with mystics and saints throughout India and strengthened his own spiritual practice or sadhana as they say it in Sanskrit. His journey from being Lakshman Das to Neem Karoli Baba is full of awe and heartwarming episodes of care and compassion. But before we get into that, let us try to figure out with our limited understanding how Himalayan mystics and yogis tinker with the fabric of space and time, whenever they want, wherever they want and howsoever they want. Its like kids playing with clay and turning it into different shapes or sizes. Many Indian sadhus and mystics are known to exhibit the spiritual ability to play with events and manifest circumstances at will. This mysterious playful nature of mystics that gives rise to new conditions and situations with a sense of higher and deeper purpose is known as Leela in Sanskrit. Even the universe has its own leelas. From time to time it does some fine-tuning to the dance of life. To the mundane world and the untrained eye, the playful leelas of great masters like Neem karoli Baba seem to defy reality and often sound as myths emerging out of local folklore. But in fact, these leelas or events are just an extension of their own spiritual grace and often a direction for those who need it the most. Let's talk about a leela of Neem Karoli Baba that gave him the name with which we know him today. It is believed that Baba once boarded the first-class compartment of a train without any ticket. The British ticket examiner was furious at discovering a sadhu in the expensive first-class coach. He shouted at him and pulled the emergency brake of the train straight away. After belittling him even more, he threw Baba out of the train near a small village in Central India called Nib Karori. Nib karori as in N.I.B,nib and K.A.R.O.R.I as karori. In Hindi, nib means foundation and Karori means strong. So the village name literally meant a place where one builds a strong foundation. Many believe it was Baba's playful Leela or a premeditated manifestation of events to have chosen Nib Karori as the place of being thrown out because that very place became Baba's first known sanctuary or ashram. Perhaps, Baba wanted everybody to remember that spiritual growth is impossible without a strong foundation of love and acceptance and the village name served as a reminder. After being thrown out of the train, Baba sat under a banyan tree which was just a few metres away. He stuck his pair of tongs into the ground and patiently waited. One must know here that many mystics and sadhus in India carry a pair of tongs with them all the time. It is known as Chimta in Hindi. The tongs or the chimta serves a dual purpose. On one hand it works as a simple musical instrument to play along while singing. And on the othe, it acts like a pair of pincers for picking up hot coal or wood while performing a fire ceremony. Anyway, back to the scene of action. While Baba was waiting under the banyan tree, the guard blew his whistle for the train to leave. The driver of the train started the throttle of the engine. But despite repeated attempts, the train wouldn't budge. Another engine was called in to pull the train away. But even that didn't work. All along Baba was sitting calmly under the tree. Then a local magistrate suggested to the British officials that they should apologize to the sadhu who was thrown out and request him to board the train again. The officials dismissed the suggestion straight away as superstition. However, after waiting for hours and many frustrating attempts they reluctantly agreed to approach him. A few passengers even carried some food and sweets as offerings for him. They requested him humbly to board the train. Baba agreed to consider their request on two conditions. One, the railway officials will build a railway station for the villagers of Neeb Karori. And two, they will treat sadhus with more respect and politeness in future. He wanted them to know that everybody is equal and deserves love and kindness. The British officials promptly promised to do their best. Baba then boarded the train. The impatient officials pleaded him to please start the train again. At this Baba replied, What do you think? Since when is it up to a sadhu to start trains? But the engineer of the train pleaded with Baba and sought his blessings. The ever compassionate baba then smiled and said, Go proceed on your journey. Within seconds, the train started rolling again. Baba stayed back where he was thrown out. He made Nib Karori village his home and meditated there for many years. He even made a hanuman temple there. There are numerous documented accounts with recorded evidence of his miracles or leela in Nib Karori village. As his fame spread far and wide, people started addressing him as Neem Karoli baba in colloquial Hindi Perhaps, because it was easier to pronounce Neem Karoli than Nib Karori in the local dialect. Baba also graciously accepted the name given to him out of love. Eventually, the British government also kept its promise and constructed a railway station for the village. In December 2019, the station master of the Nib Karori railway station, Chander Shekhar Shukla, was interviewed by one of India's most respected biographers of Neem Karoli Baba and the editor in chief of Dastak media, Vinod Shukla. In the interview, the station master confirmed that the Banyan tree under whose shade Baba rested, was still standing there, just a few metres away from the railway station. Many sincere devotees of Neem Karoli Baba visit that spot just to experience a unique calmness and solace by sitting under the same banyan tree, where Baba once carried out one of his many mystical miracles or leelas. For those interested in seeing the tree in its current form, we have pasted Dastak Media's Youtube link of the interview with Nib Karori Railway station's station master in the description of this episode. Hello and Namaste A warm welcome to Neem Karoli Baba's miracles of love and compassion. Who is Neem Karoli Baba and why do thousands from all over the world yearn to connect with him? What is it that pulls people to a simple, unassuming man who never traveled outside of India.  From ordinary people to innovators, scientists, artists, yogis, and even thieves, everyone gathered in the same room where Baba would be cracking jokes and making people laugh.  It really didn't matter to him how virtuous or cunning a person was.  because he knew  that everybody sought and deserved inner peace  Baba's love never clamored for any attention or recognition. I know it sounds a bit strange for the times that we live in.  we're surrounded today by unending competition of likes, shares, comments, subscriptions and the crazy battle for attention but for Baba...his   simplicity worked its magic on everyone.  He was not in the business of making disciples, writing books, producing merchandise, or leaving behind a lineage of masters after him.  He was not running a 7-11 or Walmart for spiritual products and endeavors.  If at all, he was in the business of serving humanity with love and not making too much noise about it. It might be difficult for some people to believe but there were no appearances on TV with Ellen or Oprah, no prescription for any kind of soup or salad for the soul, and of course no PR agency or social media teams.  Rather just a very loving and modest Indian villager in one of the economically lesser privileged parts of India. But here was a man who seemed to be creating miracles after miracles of love in people's lives. How was he doing it and what was the real identity of this mystic man?  Was he like an offline version of one of those folks we see on Instagram who claim to activate your so-called shiva and shakti and third eye energy. You know the ones who appear in promoted posts on your social media feed. or was he running  a course on mindfulness and kundalini meditation for westerners with a  splash of chakras, doshas, tantra, reiki, ayurvedic recipes and what have you,  Well!! Thankfully, No. Neem Karoli Baba was none of that. He was a saint from the Himalayan order of mystics, whose mystic perfections coexisted harmoniously and peacefully with his imperfect human form. A man with incredible yogic and spiritual prowess and yet someone who did not care to be the center of attention. It is believed that Neem Karoli Baba or Maharaj Ji as his followers would call him out of love, was born around the year 1900.  His birth name was Lakshman Das Sharma. He was born in the small town of  Akbarpur in Central India, a city on the banks of river Tamsa which is a distributary of the mighty Ganges. His birth town Akbarpur is now renowned as the trading hub for some of the most exquisitely designed glass bangles from India.  When young Lakshman Das was only 11, his parents married him off, in accordance with the customs and belief system of the society then. Don't forget this happened 110 years ago in 1911. So after his marriage, the family expected Lakshman das to grow into adulthood and become a good householder, fulfilling his worldly responsibilities. But the little boy had other plans. Soon after his marriage, he ran away from home and wandered throughout India, leading the life of a recluse. He traveled to numerous spiritual hotspots of the country and met many mystic saints and exalted masters. For the next few years, he did intense sadhana or spiritual practice and became to be identified by other spiritual saints and commoners as a true energy-incarnate of the Hindu deity, Hanuman. The tales, mantras, and Sanskrit shlokas of Hanuman remind us all that God resides in our service towards others. Something that Lakshman Das made the thumb rue of his life. Legend has it that by the time he was 17, he had acquired the mystic siddhis or powers of being a trikaaldarshi, or one who can look into the past, present, and future.   This ability might be mesmerizing for many but for Himalayan mystics and saints, it was just a by-the-way- faculty that prospered with other spiritual practices. They did not like to talk about it and neither did they consider it to be an important goal of spiritual growth. It's almost like a skilled football player having the ability to run 100 meters under 10 seconds. Big deal for many but for the athletic player, its just a side ability that comes with his training to be a champion soccer star. So after 15 years of leaving home and wandering with mystics, someone known to Lakshman das' family recognized him and informed his father.  His father immediately rushed to the Farrukhabad district of India where Lakshman das was at that time and dragged him home. He then ordered Lakshman Das to stay with the family and lead a married man's life.  The family was land holdings and belonged to the upper economic strata of the society. Lakshman das could have chosen to lead a comfortable life until he breathed his last.  But even at home, Lakshman das' heart went out to the poor and the downtrodden and he started doing various forms of social work. This continued for some years and in the meantime, he had three children, two sons, and a daughter. But as time went on, Lakshman das was craving to lead a life where all he did was to give love and compassion to those who frequented him and share with them the path of servitude.  He knew he had to reach out to the world and give lots of love to it.   It was about time. He was ready for the second leg of his journey. In the next episode, you will know how Lakshman das became the Neem Karoli Baba residing in people's hearts. Until then thank you for tuning in. I am your narrator Sourav Roy and I hope you continue this journey of love with me. Ram Ram.
