Yes, I realise it won't be summer for another week or so, but the following observations are just a few Gardeners' Tips to muck around with: Ancistrocerus gazella is an introduced “potters wasp” from Europe. It got here decades ago and is a really cute predatory wasp that does some great things in your quarter acre paradise. This little wasplet makes nice nests inside hollow tubes and then it goes on the hunt for small caterpillars, usually the leafrollers that silk your leaves together and chew from within their leaf-silk tent. Ancistrocerus paralyses the caterpillars, lays an egg on them and cements the quarry and its own potential baby inside the carefully chosen tube. Of course, the caterpillar will become food for the ectoparasite, and this helps to reduce the chewing damage on your roses, perennials and other plants. Here's a tip: create a bunch of small-diameter bamboo tubes as a choice of real estate for these wasps to live in. The accommodation runs a little bit like that of the mason wasp (who gets their kids —larvae— to feed on paralysed spiders). Frustrated Cucurbit growers (cucumbers, melons, marrow, courgettes, you name it) often complain at this time of the year that their plants simply don't set fruit at all; in fact, the plant almost exclusively produces male flowers and hardly any female flowers! Yep, common complaint. If there is a scarcity of pollinators the plant “thinks” there isn't enough pollen/there are not enough pollinators to fertilise the female flowers, so it creates more male flowers to “compensate”. A remedy that works toward solving the problem is to have a lot of Pollen and Nectar plants surrounding the cucumber/melon, etc, so that a heap of pollinating insects are constantly patrolling the area. The first female flower will then almost certainly get her turn, and the plant “knows” it's okay to produce more female flowers. If you can achieve that from mid-spring onwards, all will be well! Talking about pollinators, have a look out for the Wool Carder Bee! It's another introduced pollinating insect from Europe, and it has some quite amazing behaviours. It loves to hover and fly around the Lamiate flowers in your garden, stuff like Salvias, and lamb's ear. These types of plants are its favourite food, and it defends its patch fiercely by chasing away other pollinators – bees, bumble bees, and even wasps! It does so by dive-bombing these “interlopers” with almost Top Gun-like sorties. They will even squeeze bees and bumble bees between their abdominal segments, festooned with spikes! Gruesome stuff, especially when then mortally wound these bees. When wool carder bees start nest building, they scrape off the fine, light-coloured hairs off the leaves of certain plants (remember lamb's ear!) and work these fibres into the most delicate, soft and insulating ball that acts as nest nurseries for their larvae and pupae in development. Their name (wool carder bee) tells the story of their ability to cut off the hairs and fibres and use those resources to create brilliantly designed nests for their babies. When you point all this activity out to the kids, you'll find they will be busy observing aerial battles and dogfights, right in your back yard! And that's what Vyāsadeva says in the Vedānta-sūtra. He said the śāstras are all saying you should rise to the highest level, therefore you can, because if you couldn't rise to the highest level, then the śāstra would be illogical to say, "Rise to the highest platform." There's also the way of defining what a pure devotee is. In Bhagavad-gītā, Kṛṣṇa says (BG 9.30): api cet su-duracaro bhajate mam ananya-bhak sadhur eva sa mantavyaḥ samyag vyavasito hi saḥ Which means that even if somebody at this point is encumbered by some worldliness, because their determination and intention is fixed properly, then Kṛṣṇa says emphatically, you have to consider them sādhus, and that's a big name: they're called a Sādhu. What's more, you find the nuances and definitions in the Nectar of Instruction, verse number five, in the purport. Prabhupāda describes kaniṣṭha, madhyama, and uttama more in the context of, let's say, our ISKCON society, and then he describes a neophyte as somebody who just joined and is just making their way, getting chastised by everybody for sitting in the wrong direction. Then there's the madhyama-adhikārī. But then he gives the uttama-adhikārī: he says somebody who's been practicing for a long time and has shown they're steady in the process, and they preach, and they know śāstra. Now, those are verifiable. You can see if somebody is doing that because they either show up or they don't. And then, do they know śāstra? Well, I mean, there are different levels of knowing śāstra. But if they know the basic śāstra enough to establish that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and some other things, that's pretty good. And then, that they preach. If you try to take other kinds of definitions of uttama-adhikārī which are bandied about a lot, like, "How do you judge somebody's faith?" and "Okay, they have to be seeing Kṛṣṇa directly." We'll just ask them, "Are you seeing Kṛṣṇa directly?" Even the Six Gosvāmīs say, "No, we don't see Kṛṣṇa, we're looking for Him." And if somebody does say they saw Kṛṣṇa last night and were dancing with Him, how are you going to prove otherwise? Say, "Yeah, I dance with Him every night." And then say, "Okay, well, prove me wrong that I wasn't dancing with Him." So that's not the means by which we judge whether somebody is a kaniṣṭha, madhyama, or uttama; it has to be verifiable signs. Madhvācārya says, when you're discerning an advanced devotee, you can't judge by the ecstatic emotions, because some pure devotees hide their emotions. That's in that verse: evaṁ-vrataḥ sva-priya-nāma-kīrtyā. He said there are only two ways by which you can judge the pure devotee, and that's: one is by their steadiness, and the other is by what they say. This episode ofNature Calls, Conversations from the Hudson Valley is a retrospective look at one of the early radio interviews from our precursor show, “Digging in With Master Gardeners”, aired on WGXC, 90.7 FM. Teresa and Jean interviewed Master Beekeeper and Emeritus Master Gardener Volunteer Linda Aydlett. The original was aired as episode 14. Linda Aydlett has been a beekeeper for over a decade, tending from two to thirty hives in various years. She got started at a workshop by the Catskill Mountain Beekeeping Club, studied via books, internet and Youtube videos, and then became a Master Beekeeper through Cornell University. Linda tells us there is a special relationship between bees and their keeper, quoting author Mark Winston : “The world slows down to focus on bees and their world.” There are 20,000 bee species worldwide. Honeybees are the only insect providing food eaten by people. They are most commonly managed by people. There are twenty sub-species and they are now found in all habitable parts of the world, but are not native to North America. Some key details about honey bees include: they forage over an area of several miles they rarely sting because they will die if they do they use their knees to carry the pollen from flower to flower their role in the ecosystem is enormous. One third of our food supply relies on the presence of pollinators. Honeybees can be directly connected to 75% of fruit crops and 53% of seed production. Direct production from honey bees includes honey. It is nectar brought back to the hive and stored at an 18% moisture content. It takes millions of miles of flight and visits to two million flowers to produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey. Propolis is a glue produced from the sap of evergreens for maintenance of the hive. It is also valuable to humans for certain antimicrobial properties, and is also used as a wood varnish. Beeswax is excess nectar, and is the infrastructure of a hive. Humans have multiple uses for the wax, including the popular beeswax candles. Even the venom has a use. Although its removal kills the bee, the venom is used to inject “heat” into arthritic joints. Bees are often considered livestock and overseen by departments of agriculture in many states. Nectar is the reward to the bee for transporting pollen from flower to flower. Linda goes on to describe the fascinating details of a forager bee's life. They find the flowers (and are flower “constant” while a particular flower is in season), and collect the nectar. They return to the hive and transfer it to another bee. They also perform a “waggle dance” to transmit information about direction of the nectar source. Linda describes both the dance and how researchers decoded it in 1927. There are three castes of bees, and Linda describes the duties of each in detail, from the queen to the drone to the worker. There is considerable drama to the choice and emergence of new queens. Learn about a substance called royal jelly which is exuded from the foreheads of nurse bees to feed the queen larvae. The larva of worker bees emerge to assume one or more of the duties of a worker bee. There are, in addition to nurse bees, mortuary bees, ventilator bees, guard bees and others. Eventually each of these can be promoted to a forager bee, usually for the last half of their life (eight weeks on average). There are even some bees known as winter bees. They are born in September or October and can survive the winter. They are of necessity less active and their main duty is to keep the hive warm... around 90 degrees F. They can unhinge their wings and then shiver to produce heat, all the while rotating from the inside to the outside of the bee cluster. New egg laying starts in February and March when activities revert to traditional good weather behavior. Ideally, there was enough honey stored in the hive for the population to survive the winter.
