November is often a time for giving thanks, and the 4th Yama, Brahmacharya, encourages us to be grateful for having “just enough,” and to practice “nonexcess.” We live in a world that can rob us of our time, money, and energy while we pursue better and newer and more. Brahmacharya asks us to examine our priorities and to focus on what really matters. Are we living in communion with God? Are we sacrificing our precious time and energy in pursuit of worldly excess? Do we recognize when we have “just enough” and refrain from overindulgence?Brahmacharya seems like the perfect Yama to practice in November. Let's practice nonexcess in our daily lives. Let's practice gratitude for all that we have rather than focusing on our have-nots. Let's strive to see the divine in all people and moments. Let's do more with less.Show Notes:Denise's meditation at the end of the episode:May you rest in the space of ‘good enough.' You are good. You are enough. You are sufficient in this moment, just as you are. You deserve goodness and kindness and hope and help.” ‘Head to the floor, I breathe in and out, thankful for my breath and my body and gravity. Earth herself. Through this, I reveal the blessings. There are always some, sometimes many! Each day a new world to make what is possible real and fully embodied. I awaken awareness of my own influence to create kindness, depth, and love in every moment.” “Grant me daily the grace of gratitude. To be thankful for all my many gifts, and so be freed from artificial needs, that I might lead a joyful, simple life.” Edward Hays, OSBThe Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

pWotD Episode 3093: Diwali Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 407,031 views on Monday, 20 October 2025 our article of the day is Diwali.Dipavali (IAST: Dīpāvalī), commonly known as Diwali (English: ), is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolises the spiritual victory of Dharma over Adharma, light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Diwali is celebrated during the Hindu lunisolar months of Ashvin (according to the amanta tradition) and Kārtika – between around mid-September and mid-November. The celebrations generally last five or six days.Diwali is connected to various religious events, deities and personalities, such as being the day Rama returned to his kingdom in Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana after defeating the demon king Ravana. It is also widely associated with Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, and Ganesha, the god of wisdom and the remover of obstacles. Other regional traditions connect the holiday to Vishnu, Krishna, Durga, Shiva, Kali, Hanuman, Kubera, Yama, Yami, Dhanvantari, or Vishvakarman.Primarily a Hindu festival, variations of Diwali are also celebrated by adherents of other faiths. The Jains observe their own Diwali which marks the final liberation of Mahavira. The Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Divas to mark the release of Guru Hargobind from a Mughal prison. Newar Buddhists, unlike other Buddhists, celebrate Diwali by worshipping Lakshmi, while the Hindus of Eastern India and Bangladesh generally, celebrate Diwali by worshipping the goddess Kali.During the festival, the celebrants illuminate their homes, temples and workspaces with diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns. Hindus, in particular, have a ritual oil bath at dawn on each day of the festival. Diwali is also marked with fireworks as well as the decoration of floors with rangoli designs and other parts of the house with jhalars. Food is a major focus with families partaking in feasts and sharing mithai. The festival is an annual homecoming and bonding period not only for families, but also for communities and associations, particularly those in urban areas, which will organise activities, events, and gatherings. Many towns organise community parades and fairs with parades or music and dance performances in parks. Some Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs will send Diwali greeting cards to family near and far during the festive season, occasionally with boxes of Indian confectionery. Another aspect of the festival is remembering the ancestors.Diwali is also a major cultural event for the Hindu, Sikh, and Jain diaspora. The main day of the festival of Diwali (the day of Lakshmi Puja) is an official holiday in Fiji, Guyana, India, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago, and is symbolically recognized by some US state governments. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:24 UTC on Tuesday, 21 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Diwali on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Bluesky at @wikioftheday.com.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Brian.
Have you ever been accused of stealing? Probably not. Yet, most of us engage in various forms of stealing every day, often without realizing it. There are many ways in which we take from others, the Earth, future generations, and even ourselves. The third Yama, Asteya, encourages us to become aware of how our words and actions may rob others of their time, joy, or sense of self-worth. It reminds us that the Earth deserves our attention and appreciation now so that future generations can also experience its wonders. Lastly, we are prompted to consider how we steal from ourselves. We often forget that “comparison is the thief of joy,” yet we regularly diminish our own happiness by comparing or criticizing ourselves. As Oprah wisely said, “When we know better, we do better.” This embodies the essence of Asteya.Show notes:The Yamas & Niyamas: Exploring Yoga's Ethical Practice by Deborah Adele

Facing Death with Wisdom Why do we fear death so intensely? Why does the loss of loved ones bring such unbearable grief? In this episode of the Pragmatic Gita Podcast, we journey through verses 2.25–2.30 of the Bhagavad Gita, where Krishna teaches Arjuna about the Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul. Why Krishna calls the soul avyaktaha (unmanifested), achintyaha (unthinkable), and avikaryaha (unchangeable). How the cycle of birth and death never touches the Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul. The meaning of sarva-gata—the soul as all-pervading, existing everywhere and always. The wonder of the soul: why some see it as a marvel, some hear of it but never understand it.How samskaras (mental impressions) silently shape karma and destiny. The simple but profound way to transform samskaras through bhakti yoga.Krishna explains that the soul is beyond perception, beyond the grasp of senses and intellect. The Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul is invisible to material eyes and inconceivable to thought, yet it is the truest reality within us. Just as a map can never capture the richness of a city, our concepts can never capture the full essence of the soul.Even when we cling to the belief that the soul is born and dies, Krishna's wisdom still applies: death is certain for the born, and birth is certain for the dead. Life moves in cycles, but the Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul remains untouched, indestructible, and eternal. To bring this teaching alive, we recall Yudhishthira's dialogue with Yama in the Mahabharata. When asked what is most surprising in this world, Yudhishthira replies: every day beings die, yet the living believe they are immortal. This paradox shows why Krishna urges Arjuna—and us—not to grieve over what is inevitable, but to focus on realizing the eternal. The Gita also links this wisdom to samskaras. Our impressions form habits, and habits create karma. Negative samskaras bind us in suffering, but Krishna gives hope: through devotion, even the most sinful person can transform and awaken to the Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul.Closing Thought: Death cannot destroy us. The Unmanifested, Unthinkable, Unchangeable Eternal Soul is indestructible, timeless, and beyond sorrow. By cultivating devotion and refining samskaras, we align with our eternal essence and step closer to liberation.krsnadaasa (Servant of Krishna)

A story of luck, pride, divine wagers, and cosmic journeysIn ancient India, there lived a man whose life revolved around a single game—Judo, the game of dice. So skilled was he that no opponent could match him, and he earned his living defeating anyone who dared to challenge him. But when all humans refused to play, he turned to the gods themselves. In a bold twist of fate, he played against Lord Shiva in a temple, declaring himself the victor and claiming the goddess as his prize. This act set off a chain of extraordinary events. Gifted with a celestial wife—an Apsara from the heavens—his adventures spiral from divine dance halls to fierce battles with Kinnaras, from heavenly courts to the very kingdom of Yama, Lord of Death. From gambler to guest in heaven, from lover to judge of souls—this is the story of a man who dared to roll the dice with destiny.

Brahmacharya is one of the Yamas, ethical guidelines in Yoga philosophy. This includes managing your energy in terms of speech, consumption, activity, and thoughts. The goal is to avoid excess and depletion, fostering a balanced and intentional way of living. Brahmacharya is about self-mastery, not suppression. Be guided using an affirmation to experience inner wholeness. The question at the heart of this episode strikes at a surprising disconnect in personal finance: Why do so many investors intellectually understand they're investing to enjoy retirement, yet construct portfolios clearly designed to maximize wealth at death? Through a series of illuminating listener emails, Frank unpacks how portfolios optimized for accumulation often fail spectacularly during the decumulation phase. One listener confesses he "always wondered why anyone would buy bonds when clearly stocks give a far greater return," before discovering through portfolio testing that a 100% equity portfolio would have "failed catastrophically" for someone retiring around 2000-2003.This recognition—that diversification isn't about maximizing returns but enabling sustainable withdrawals—represents the fundamental insight many investors miss until too late. As Frank colorfully puts it, if your goal is to "die with the most money possible" in your "golden coffin," then by all means stick with 90-100% equities. But if you actually intend to enjoy your retirement by spending more than 3% of your portfolio annually, a properly diversified approach becomes essential. The episode also addresses why attempts to use valuation metrics like CAPE ratios to predict market movements have largely failed, and why separating your portfolio into growth and value components offers a more reliable approach to capturing rebalancing bonuses without attempting market timing.Make sure your investment behavior actually matches your stated goals. If you're planning to spend in retirement, construct a portfolio that optimizes for sustainable withdrawals, not maximum theoretical returns.Support the show

After our lecture on The 12 Secret Kālīs | & The Most Closely Guarded Secret in Tantra where we introduced the powers of non-dual consciousness which flow in a 12-step sequence (which we argued was one of the subtlest teachings of Tantrik non-duality if not THE subtlest teachings), many were asking: "how do we invoke the 12 Kālīs, worship them, relate to them and incorporate them into our day-to-day sādhanā?" In this talk, we introduce one of the two Krama Stotrams and introduce Abhinava Gupta's "wheel of fire meditation" from Tantrasāra Chapter 4, which he received from his Krama guru, Bhūtirāja. The 12 KalisPrameyam (aparā): KNOWN OBJECTSṛṣṭikālī = manifesting an object internally, she then Raktakālī (bahirmkuhī) = becomes passionate towards that object Sthitināśakālī = wishes to reabsorb it and starts to internalize it Yamakālī = manifests and dissolves a "vighna" (obstacle) to re-absorption Pramānā (parāpara): ACT OF KNOWING Saṃhārakālī = reabsorbs the object Mṛtyukālī = and contemplates "svabhava": my very nature is to reabsorb! (i.e savors the experience just had) Rudrakālī = perceives a subtle impression left over from perception + also Pure Consciousness and then devours the subtle impressionMārtaṇḍakālī = reabsorbs the solar-mandala of 12 faculties into the "Lord of the Circle" (ego) Pramātr (parā): KNOWER Paramārkakālī = reabsorbs the Lord of the Circle (ego) Kālāgnirudrakālī = reabsorbs the separation of one purusha (individual knowing subject) from another (mayīya-mala) Mahākālakālī = reabsorbs the Universal Subject (Shiva) into full expansion Mahābhairavacaṇḍograghorakālī = reabsorbs even that fully expanded ground into...what? void unspeakable! (or rather: articulates transcendence as immanence!) Here are just the first 5 verses of the Krama Stotram:Kaulārṇavānanda-ghanormi-rūpām unmeṣa-meṣobhaya-bhājam antaḥ |nilīyate nīla-kulālaye yā tāṃ ṣṛṣtikālīṃ satataṃ namāmi || 1 ||I always praise that Kālī of Emission, who blooms and recedes like a wave of bliss in the ocean of the Kaula! mahā-vinodārpita-mātṛ-cakra- vīrendrakā-sṛg-rasa-pāna-saktām |raktīkṛtāṃ ca pralayātyaye tāṃ namāmi viśvākṛti-rakta-kālīm || 2 ||I always praise that Passionate Kālī who manifests this world and who savours the world during a pause in dissolution, she who happily drinks the nectarean blood offered to the circle of Mothers by heroes (Tantrik adepts)! vāji-dvaya-svīkṛta-vāta-cakra- prakrānta-saṅghaṭṭa-gamāgama-sthām |śucir yayāstaṃ gamitorciṣā tāṃ śāntāṃ namāmi sthiti-nāśa-kālīm || 3 ||I salute that peaceful one, The Kali Who Destroys Stasis, who is there in the coming and going of the breath and the perfect union of breath which is set in motion by the Wheel of Wind (life-force), who dissolves all notions of purity! sarvārtha-saṅkarṣaṇa-saṃyamasya yamasya yantur jagato yamāya |vapur mahāgrāsa-vilāsa-rāgāt saṅkarṣayantīṃ praṇamāmi kālīm || 4 ||I prostrate before that Kali who out of desire for the play of great devouring and controlling the world dissolves Yama the controller, who controls the destruction of things! unmanyanantā nikhilārtha-garbhā yā bhava-saṃhāra-nimeṣam eti |sadoditā satyudayāya śūnyāṃ Saṃhārakālīṃ muditāṃ namāmi ||5I salute that Destroying Kali who is the endless, ever-radiant and joyful transcendent Void, the Womb of all things, who closes her eyes in order to withdraw the world so as to give rise to the Void (Consciousness).Support the show
In this segment we explore the asterism of Bharani. Bharani translates into something like "the bearer" and has the deity of Yama. Though Bharani is in the youthful, spry, energized sign of Aries, we will come to find that this asterism carries an incredible amount of depth and weight. Bharani has access to the other side... as Yama is the god of death and rebirth. This asterism is extremely mystical, magical, and has no hesitation when diving into the darker qualities of life.
