He categorizes leaders into three levels: those focused on safety and belonging, those striving for advancement, and the most elevated leaders who prioritize contribution and value creation. Ryan discusses the significance of establishing a clear, inspirational, and stakeholder-centric purpose within church organizations, drawing parallels to successful leaders in the corporate world. He emphasizes that a well-defined purpose can help shift focus from individual concerns to a collective mission, fostering a more engaged and vibrant community. The conversation also touches on the importance of mission and vision statements, as well as the need for clear values that guide behavior in challenging situations. Ryan suggests that church leaders should conduct a stakeholder analysis to identify key groups impacted by their leadership and to ensure that their efforts create meaningful value for these stakeholders. Kurt and Ryan delve into the complexities of administering temple recommends, exploring the balance between behavior-focused and grace-centered discipleship. They consider the implications of current temple recommend questions and how they may inadvertently create a caste system within the church. The episode concludes with a thought-provoking examination of how church culture can either uplift or alienate members, emphasizing the need for leaders to cultivate an environment where all feel valued and included. Overall, this episode offers valuable insights for church leaders seeking to enhance their effectiveness and foster a more inclusive and purpose-driven community. 01:48 - Welcoming Ryan Gottfredson Back to the Podcast 02:30 - Discussion on Leadership Challenges in Church Settings 03:34 - Introduction to Leadership Concepts and Themes 05:15 - Ryan's Background and Current Roles 06:14 - Consulting Relationships and Leadership Development 08:08 - Common Issues in Organizations 09:12 - Levels of Leadership Sophistication 11:09 - The Importance of Cultivating Leadership Environments 12:07 - The Role of Character Development in Leadership 13:40 - The Balance Between Behavior and Grace in Discipleship 16:16 - Temple Recommend Questions and Their Implications 20:08 - The Concept of a Caste System in Church Leadership 22:38 - The Challenge of Creating Inclusive Church Communities 23:01 - Indicators of Effective Leadership in Organizations 24:05 - The Importance of Purpose in Leadership 27:28 - Engaging Stakeholders in Leadership 30:06 - The Role of Mission and Vision in Leadership 32:08 - Stakeholder Analysis for Effective Leadership

Send us a textWe are LIVE for this episode, with a special guest observer one of our friends (and biggest fans!) The girls wrestle with social inequalities. When Samantha dates super-rich Harvey, she enjoys the perks she claims not to crave, but finds his relationship with female servant Sum is not as one-sided as it seems. Charlotte's date with celebrity actor Wylie Ford starts as a luxury dream, but she soon finds she's expected to become more of an abjectly servile fan then a self-respecting lover. Miranda takes Steve shopping for his wardrobe but has a taste he cannot afford and yet won't allow her to pick up the bill, even if that breaks them up. Carrie is insecure again when Big takes her to a socialite party on Park Avenue but never seems able to express his love, and therefore she goes out with an artistic flirt without means she find waitering there.

India's caste system, one of the world's oldest social hierarchies, has shaped lives for centuries, granting privileges to some while oppressing others. Although caste based discrimination was banned in 1948, its influence hasn't gone away and is now spilling into our social media feeds, with some young women asserting pride in their caste identities. We're joined by correspondents from Delhi, Umang Poddar and Divya Arya, who explain the complexities of caste and unravel this new trend on Instagram. We also hear from two Indians, Sachin and Christina, who come from different ends of the system. In this powerful and historically rich podcast episode, we dive deep into the untold stories of Hyderabad's past, featuring the iconic Pasham Yadagiri Sir. Known for his extensive knowledge of the region's history and his fearless critiques of modern society, Yadagiri Sir sheds light on many hidden aspects of Hyderabad, the Nizams, and their rule. We begin by revisiting the famous “Bandi Venaka Bandi” song, which leads us into a detailed discussion about Hyderabad's Nizam era, particularly what transpired on September 17th. This was a turning point for many, especially for farmers and certain communities like the Brahmins and Padmashalis, who faced brutal killings. Yadagiri Sir unpacks the complexities of the British taxation system and how the Nizams acted as allies to the British crown. He touches on significant events such as the hanging of 1,000 Gonds in Nirmal and emphasizes the need for a 'mosaic vision' to truly understand the British rule in India. We explore how the Nizams first came to power in India and whether there is any confusion between the Nizam army and the notorious Razakars. Yadagiri Sir breaks down the difference between the regular and irregular armies, drawing parallels to contemporary cases like Disha and Nayeem, showing the long-lasting impact of these historical systems on today's society. We discuss infamous cases such as Belle Lalitha's death and the mysterious ways in which these deaths are often brushed under the rug. Yadagiri Sir raises concerns over critical thought in journalism and why cases like Nayeem's death were never properly filed. The conversation also takes a turn towards Operation Polo, the military action that led to Hyderabad's annexation into India. Yadagiri Sir speaks passionately about the massacre that occurred afterward, often referred to as the second Jallianwala Bagh, and the forgotten figures like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Chaakali Ellamma who played crucial roles during this period. He shares insights into the once-wealthy regions of Hyderabad, such as Vagul and Adilabad, which were richer than Kashmir. Yadagiri Sir also discusses how the oppressive 'Dhora' taxation system and violent events like the Puligiri massacre shaped Telangana's fight for survival. The podcast delves into intriguing questions about Belle Lalitha's death and its connection to Nayeem, exploring the larger political context that led to her tragic end. From the closure of all CBM factories, including Asia's largest sugar factory, to the Charminar cigarette industry, Yadagiri Sir points out how these economic collapses affected common people. He argues that certain political parties, like TRS, TDP, and BJP, have ultimately put an end to the vision of Graama Swaraj, leaving us in a cryptocracy rather than a democracy. Moving on to caste dynamics, Yadagiri Sir explains the historical origin of caste titles like Reddy and Choudary, clarifying that these were originally professions rather than social hierarchies. In the case of Reddys, they were land contractors, while Choudary referred to tax collectors. With his trademark candor, Yadagiri Sir also delves into human evolution and how the rise of industrial economies disrupted natural societal progress. With the rise of social media, Yadagiri Sir ponders whether YouTube could become the next mainstream platform for journalism. Citing the example of Dhruv Rathee, who has reportedly influenced up to 20% of voters, he discusses how mobile phones have become the new 'AK47s' in the hands of the people, reshaping political discourse and the flow of information. Finally, Yadagiri Sir shares his thoughts on the Emergency of June 25th, 1975, revealing the harsh conditions of the time, including mass sterilization and the draconian actions of Sanjay Gandhi. In a thought-provoking discussion, he touches on the long-term changes to India's Constitution and the rise of systems like HYDRA that continue to influence the nation today.

Caste—one of the oldest systems of exclusion in the world—is thriving. Despite the ban on Untouchability 70 years ago, caste impacts 1.9 billion people in the world. Every 15 minutes, a crime is perpetrated against a Dalit person. The average age of death for Dalit women is just 39. And the wreckages of caste are replicated here in the U.S., too—erupting online with rape and death threats, showing up at work, and forcing countless Dalits to live in fear of being outed.  Dalit American activist Thenmozhi Soundararajan puts forth a call to awaken and act, not just for readers in South Asia, but all around the world. She ties Dalit oppression to fights for liberation among Black, Indigenous, Latinx, femme, and Queer communities, examining caste from a feminist, abolitionist, and Dalit Buddhist perspective--and laying bare the grief, trauma, rage, and stolen futures enacted by Brahminical social structures on the caste-oppressed. Incisive and urgent, “The Trauma of Caste” is an activating beacon of healing and liberation, written by one of the world's most needed voices in the fight to end caste apartheid.  Learn more about the story and find the transcript on radioproject.org. Globally, many individuals grapple with oppressive caste structures that condemn them to lives marked by degradation, oppression, and poverty. These enduring systems of racial, religious, and color discrimination remain prevalent. For instance, in India, the Dalit community (the lowest class of people) continues to battle for the same rights that Black Americans secured half a century ago.Join us today as we spotlight Kamna Singh, a champion of the underrepresented in India who has defied all the cultural limitations to become a Ph.D. student in a country where this is a monumental and challenging fete. Her area of study is Black women writers in America. Best selling author Yashica Dutt visited the University of Washington to discuss her globally successful book, Coming Out As Dalit: A Memoir of Surviving India's Caste System. The book was first published in 2019, but an updated US version was released in 2023 that includes Gus' Seattle, Washington and the recent legislation to prohibit "caste discrimination" in the workplace. Dutt is a non-white female born in the area of the world known as India. Her memoir examines her life as a "Dalit," non-white female member of India's caste system. It's been said that this system of mistreatment predates the System of White Supremacy. However, Whites overpowered dark people in this part of the universe too. Gus learned that Vice President Kamala Harris is a member of India's upper caste - which may explain her access to the White House and a White husband. Gus was able to ask Dutt about the role of skin color in the caste system. The bestselling Dalit author had lots to say on this subject! She even detailed growing up with skin bleaching creams. Many non-white females in attendance (classified as Indian) seemed to vigorously relate to the experience of chemically damaging your melanin-rich epidermis. People classified as black get the "double whammy" of mistreatment in this part of the world. This event took place in a very tiny room, for a large number of people, on a campus with countless auditoriums. #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

Today opens with a segment brought to you by Tara Bull on X called, the Top 10 Headlines the media won't tell you. It makes for a good launching point into the rest of my show prep. Once we finish, I jump to an item that didn't make her list and that has to do with the election lawsuit in Fulton County, Georgia. It appears the high-priced attorneys working on behalf of the state who are trying to prevent over 150,000 suspicious, mail-in ballots from being examined, have filed a motion to vacate themselves from the case. Next we spend time mocking MSNBC's Chris Hayes for trying to explain away the Palestinian photo-journalist that went along with Hamas on Oct. 7 to capture image of their atrocities. It's even caused Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) to write a letter to AG Merrick Garland, asking for an investigation to be opened. I've tried to articulate several times why we must not equivocate between Hamas and Israel. I have given the history, the timelines, the backgrounds, my analysis, all that I can think of to explain why the two are not even remotely on similar footing. However, field correspondent Douglas Murray, in a back-and-forth discussion with Piers Morgan, manages to frame this argument in two minutes. Using what we now about the Nazi's attempt at genocide, Murray reminds the world that the German's tried to hide their crime. On the flip side, Hamas was so gleeful in committing their acts, they proudly filmed and shared it with the world. That is a massive distinction to keep in mind. I then play some testimony of a poor, Gazans woman who is happy her son got his wish to become a martyr, because that's what all true believers want. They must rid the world of Jews or die trying. Now, I don't believe everyone in the Gaza Strip is immersed in the culture of death. But, those who want to escape are being attacked by their own Hamas government. Footage today showed escaping Gazans who were gunned down by Hamas in their attempt to get away from the war zone. Hamas must have their human shields, remember. On a positive side, Julia Steinberg, an intern at The Free Press, and a student at Stanford University, testified before Congress about the anti-Semitism that has been released across college campuses. She has come to the realization that DEI policies are to blame. She calls it a caste system meant to divide and set people against one another. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) has issued subpoenas to the Jeffrey Epstein estate to get flight log released with the names of those who flew on the Lolita Express. That should prove interesting. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has decided he will not run for another term. After being lied to about the Inflation Reduction Act, it's obvious he won't stand a chance, so he's bowing out. What I do find funny is in his announcement, he says he plans to go on tour and try to find ways to pull more people to the middle. Nothing says “courage” like standing in the middle of the road. Donald Trump released a statement yesterday saying the attempt in Wisconsin to keep his name off the ballot has failed. He reminds us all why it's important to stand up to tyranny. Finally, we get a satirical song from comedian Jim Gossett, who sings a familiar song, but from the perspective of the many members of Hamas who are seeing what it's like to be dealing with the might of the IDF. Hint, it's a bit “camp”y. Take a moment to rate and review the show and then share the episode on social media.   In the US, roughly 1 in 33 infants are born with a congenital disability, about 25% of which have an identified genetic cause. For the first time,, parents can use Orchid's whole genome sequencing to screen their embryos for these genetic variants and mitigate their baby's disease risk. Check out orchidhealth.com, and use code RAZIB when signing up to skip the waitlist. What is caste? This is a question many Americans have been asking since the publication of Isabel Wilkerson's Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents (an Oprah's Book Club selection). On this episode of Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks at length about the historical, cultural and genetic aspects of caste. He explains the genetic origins and impacts of the practice in the Indian subcontinent, and how that contrasts with “caste” in other societies like feudal Japan. Razib also explores how caste, a European-origin word, came to bracket a sociological phenomenon that includes two related concepts, varna and jati, and how the former is abstract while the latter is concrete. Caste in the Indian subcontinent has massive social and political implications. Razib talks about the demographics of caste, and how this is relevant to considerations of equity in a nation-state originally founded on socialistic principles. In the subcontinent, caste is not simply a Hindu phenomenon but extends to Muslims and Christians. And in a subcontinent of nearly 2 billion people, caste expresses itself in varied ways depending on region. Finally, Razib ponders the future of the institution. If diasporic communities like Mauritius and Guyana are any guide, caste has a dim future. With urban jati exogamy rates increasing constantly over the last generation, Razib predicts that in the 22nd century caste in the subcontinent will be viewed as a outmoded practice continued only by a few communities. Caste is a question that is relevant to both the past and the present, but the forces of modernization will eat away at its foundations going forward.

When we think of India, many people question the fairness of the so-called caste system, which, on the face of it, appears to divide the population into different classes, based on the family one is born into. This perception appears to limit the opportunities people have in their lifetime, and some even think that being born into a “lower” caste can be a result of so-called “bad karma.”In this episode, Thom sets the record straight, describing the actual structure and function of the caste system, and how it came to be distorted to the point that it effectively became a class system. He includes a beautiful example from the Tradition of Masters that have been the custodians of Vedic Meditation over the centuries, of one particular Master who flexed his caste to be even more fully of service than he already was.Episode Highlights:[00:45] The Caste System in India[02:14] The Four Castes or Varnas[04:40] The Caste System: A British Creation[06:47] Four within Four[09:02] Adi Shankara: The Brahmin Who Considered Himself a Shudra[11:04] Gandhi's Legacy in Abolishing the Caste System[13:15] The True Vedic CivilizationUseful Linksinfo@thomknoles.comhttps://thomknoles.com/https://www.instagram.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.facebook.com/thethomknoleshttps://www.youtube.com/c/thomknoleshttps://thomknoles.com/ask-thom-anything/
