This week, writer, political analyst, and founder of the Substack publication, The Ink, Anand Giridharadas, joins Preet to unpack his latest article, “How the Elite Behave When No One Is Watching: Inside the Epstein Emails.” Then, Preet answers your questions about President Trump's meeting with New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, and how the Senate passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in less than a day. In the bonus for Insiders, Preet and Anand chat about the physical attribute that Anand thinks contributed to Mamdani's rise. Motors are the quiet workhorses of industry. They drive pumps, fans, compressors, and heaters, and they consume more than sixty percent of the power in most industrial operations. When operators need to control motor speed, they historically relied on mechanical adjustments or trial-and-error testing to keep processes stable and safe. As motors get larger and drive trains more complex, traditional testing approaches no longer work. Bringing every component together for a full string test adds months of delay and millions of dollars in logistics. The industry is conservative and reference driven, which makes it hard for operators to trust new configurations without seeing them proven first. This is where simulations shine. In this episode, I speak with Anand Jha, Vice President of Global Sales for ABB System Drive – Process Industries, about simulation twins that let operators model the entire system before it's built. These "virtual plants" replicate the grid, the drives, the motors, and the compressor. With software-in-loop and hardware-in-loop tools, operators can validate performance, tune configurations, and eliminate expensive string tests. The result is faster execution, lower cost, deeper system insight, better training, and continuous improvement across the plant lifecycle.

Every week, two local newspapers close somewhere in the country. Some 50 million Americans have limited to no access to local news. That may increase with loss of public media funding. What is the future of journalism in an age where truth itself is under attack? Local news is essential because “that's where rebuilding confidence in facts and truth starts,” said VTDigger editor in chief Geeta Anand. We spoke at a public event at the Manchester Community Library on Nov. 11. “If you've actually gone to a meeting and seen a story based on it and met the reporter and it actually seems the article matches what you heard, then you begin to disbelieve the discrediting of journalism that is happening, led by the leaders of our country, which is having a devastating effect on our democracy.”Anand's career as a journalist and author spans the globe. Her stories on corporate corruption in the Wall Street Journal earned her a Pulitzer Prize in 2002, and she was a finalist again in 2003. Her book, "The Cure," about a father's fight to save his kids by starting a company to make a medicine for their untreatable illness, was made into the 2010 movie, Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford. She was a foreign correspondent for The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal in India. Anand's roots in journalism are in covering local news. She worked at Cape Cod News and then covered local government and courts at the Rutland Herald. In 2018, she became a professor at the UC Berkeley journalism school, where she was dean in 2020. She was at Berkeley until taking over leadership of VTDigger in July 2025. Anand spoke about how local journalism is a critical link in the information ecosystem. “Our coverage right now of immigrants getting picked up and spirited off to other parts of the country -- that's the way the world finds out that these things are happening. Our stories get picked up by national media, and the national media hold our national leaders accountable. We matter to you here in Vermont, but we're also a key part of the web of national and international news.”Anand said that for community and democracy to function, it is critical to support local news. “If we aren't vibrant, if we're not there at the city council meeting or at the school board meeting and telling those stories, government isn't held accountable. It's almost like these things haven't happened if we're not there.”Thanks to Greater Northshire Access Television for recording this conversation.

One of the biggest challenges facing HR is the perennial challenge of leadership capability. Despite years of investment in programmes, frameworks, and workshops, many organisations still struggle to see real behavioural change. The world around us is moving faster, the expectations on leaders are higher, and yet our development approaches can still feel generic, theoretical, and removed from the realities of day-to-day work. But what if technology - and specifically, AI - could help us do it differently? Instead of a one-size-fits-all course, what if every manager could have a personalised coach in their pocket that gives them real-time, practical guidance in the moment they need it most? To explore the benefits and risks of AI coaching, Lucy is joined by Anand Chopra-McGowan, Managing Director, Europe at Valence. Anand explains how Nadia, Valence's AI coach, learns your context (company principles, programmes, your team) and supports both the “small moments” such as a tricky feedback chat, and the “big moments” like onboarding and performance reviews. He shares a live example of using Nadia minutes before a meeting, why perfect memory beats good intentions, and how the tool integrates where managers already are . We dig into trust and ethics, what data Nadia uses, and how clients are measuring value - from time saved on reviews to uplift in leadership effectiveness scores and store-level customer outcomes. Anand's deployment advice is refreshingly practical: point the coach at high-friction moments in your HR calendar, customise to your ways of working, and use early wins to convert sceptics. Chapters 00:29 — Why traditional leadership development stalls 10:22 — What Nadia is and how it works (with an in-the-moment example at 12:12) 14:47 — Ethics, data, and measuring impact (ROI examples from 19:23) 23:01 — How to deploy AI coaching and bring sceptical managers with you Discover more about Disruptive HR Find out more about Disruptive HR: www.disruptivehr.com Get in touch: hello@disruptivehr.com Check out The Disruptive HR Club: https://disruptivehr.com/the-club/ Contact Anand: https://www.linkedin.com/in/achopramcgowan/
Explosive Debate! Has India's Judiciary Turned Anti-Hindu? | Anand Rangnathan vs Vishnu Shankar Jain
In this special NL Hafta Live episode, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, Anand Vardhan and Raman Kirpal were joined by The Hindu's Sobhana K Nair and senior journalist Neerja Chowdhury to decode the Bihar poll results. On the sweeping mandate for the NDA, Anand spoke about Nitish Kumar's enduring appeal, noting that he “maximises his EBC base better than anyone else. He knows how to balance administrative acumen with realpolitik.”Sobhana weighed in on Prashant Kishor's poor performance, saying, “It is not a surprise to me that Jan Suraaj did not get even a single seat. There was a lot of disinterest in the rural regions of Bihar. A lot of distrust also. There were questions being asked about where he was getting so much money to put up such a big campaign.”Neerja highlighted the unusual nature of the mandate. “I have not seen this kind of a pro-incumbency wave in India despite 20 years in power. It is unprecedented.”On Nitish Kumar's future in Bihar, she pointed to his biggest vulnerability: “The minus point of Nitish Kumar is that he doesn't have a second line of leadership. Nor has he named a successor. At one point he considered Prashant Kishor but the story would have been different had they not fallen out.”This and a lot more. Tsunamis destroy buildings, habitats and danger to everything in its path on land. But how do they affect life under the water? That's what CrowdScience listener Alvyn wants to know, and presenter Anand Jagatia is searching beneath the waves for answers. Anand meets Professor Syamsidik who is learning about how tsuanami waves are formed to help protect against future disasters. He runs the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center at Universitas Syiah Kuala, Indonesia. With him at this state-of-the-art lab is Dr David McGovern, expert in ocean and coastal modelling at London South Bank University. David tells Anand how the energy of a tsunami is spread across the entire water column. To explain the forces at play, Anand chats to Professor Emile Okal a seismologist from Northwestern University in the United States. Tsunami wave can move as fast as 800 kilometres an hour but, despite this, out at sea you might not notice it - but can the same be said for marine life? We follow the wave as it nears land and all that force is contracted and begins to show its might. Professor Suchana 'Apple' Chavanich from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand was one of the first people to swim off the Thai coast after the 2004 tsunami and remembers how coral reefs were battered. In Japan, after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami as the water retracted it pulled with it tons and tons of debris into the water. The fishing communities of the Sanriku Coast lost almost everything, their equipment was destroyed and the water was heavily polluted. Anand meets Hiroshi Sato who set up the Sanriku Volunteer Divers, a team of people who dragged the debris out of the water. One of them was diver and journalist Bonnie Waycott who tells her story of witnesses the destruction first hand and trying to rescue the fishing industry with Hiroshi. Finally, we learnt that the effect of modern tsunamis carries far further than people might have imagined. On the west coast of the United States Professor Samuel Chan is an expert in invasive species at Oregon State University. He explains how modern infrastructure is contributing to some incredible migrations. In Future of the Forest: Struggles over Land and Law in India (Cornell UP, 2025), Anand P. Vaidya tells the story of the making and unmaking of India's Forest Rights Act 2006, a law enacted to secure the largest redistribution of property in independent India by recognising the tenure and use rights of millions of landless forest dwellers. Beginning with the devastating destruction of a north Indian village Vaidya calls Ramnagar, inhabited by landless Dalits and Adivasis, the book follows the interventions of activists, forest dwelling communities, political parties, and corporations during the drafting of the law and traces how each of these coalitions shapes the law's implementation. Vaidya shows how this ambitious law became a battleground of competing legal potentialities — at once a tool of exclusion, dividing forest dwellers along caste and class lines, and yet a platform for resistance, enabling forest dwellers to challenge State domination. A multi-scalar study, Future of the Forest is attentive to the everyday politics of staking a forest rights claim, revealing how the law opens space for fluid (and often extralegal) interpretations, shifting political authority, and diverging aspirations. Anand Vaidya is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Reed College. Raghavi Viswanath is a postdoctoral researcher and teaching fellow at SOAS, University of London. Her research, supported by the Leverhulme Trust, examines how pastoralists claim grazing rights under India's Forest Rights Act 2006 and how the everyday processes of staking such claims has been impacted by the authoritarian turn in India. In this episode of Cloud Wars Live, Bob Evans speaks with T.K. Anand, Executive Vice President at Oracle, during Oracle AI World in Las Vegas. The discussion centers on Oracle's new AI Data Platform, a major initiative designed to help customers harness their own data to drive AI transformation. Anand outlines how Oracle's open, unified approach to managing enterprise data enables organizations to bring AI directly to their business processes, while also citing breakthrough developments in industry-specific applications.Reinventing with AIThe Big Themes:Data + AI = Business Reinvention: Enterprises cannot simply adopt AI as a bolt‑on; they must combine their private business data — workflows, applications, processes — with advanced models if they hope to reinvent themselves ahead of disruption. Anand notes that many AI/LLMs have been trained on public domain data and thus “know nothing about our customers' private data.” The AI Data Platform is designed to enable that union.Pre‑integrated with SaaS Applications: For customers of Oracle's large SaaS portfolio (e.g., Fusion, NetSuite, industry apps) the AI Data Platform offers tailored variants that are pre‑integrated with the application's data models and semantics. This means organizations get out‑of‑the-box predictive models, analytics, and agents aligned to their workflows, but still have the full platform underneath to extend or customize. This helps reduce time‑to‑value for companies using those applications.Full Stack Advantage: Oracle positions its differentiator as owning and integrating the full stack: cloud infrastructure (OCI including autonomous database), data and analytics platform, applications (SaaS) and now AI/agents. This end‑to‑end control enables closer integration between data assets, applications, and AI use cases. For example, having application workflow knowledge baked into the data platform allows faster mapping from business process to predictive agent. The Big Quote: “The AI Platform is all about helping our customers achieve AI transformation through the power of their own data."More from T.K. Today we're talking about polyamory under duress (PUD). Being non-monogamous comes with its own set of challenges, and sometimes when external pressure or internal conflicts can make it even more stressful. Dealing with polyamory under duress can be very difficult for our mental and emotional wellbeing, so today we're going to discuss why someone might be feeling duress in polyamory and who might be vulnerable to it. We'll also talk about how to recognize if you might be in a situation that qualifies as polyamory under duress, whether persuasion or coercion is involved in PUD, and how to bring a sense of equilibrium back to the relationship if you think it might resemble a PUD situation. Kabir is the most alive of all dead poets. He is a fabric without stitches. No centres, no edges. Anand threads his way in. Over the years, as a publisher and editor, Anand immerses himself in the works of Babasaheb Ambedkar and other anticaste thinkers. He gives up his practice of music and poetry, blaming his disenchantment on caste. One day in Delhi, Anand starts looking for Kabir. He finds him here, there, everywhere. He begins to pay attention to the many ways in which Kabir's words are sung, and translates them. Soon, Kabir starts looking out for Anand. The songs of Kabir sung by a range of singers—Prahlad Tipaniya, Fariduddin Ayaz, Mukhtiyar Ali, Kumar Gandharva, Kaluram Bamaniya, Mahesha Ram and other wayfarers—make Anand return to music and poetry. Anand translates songs seldom found in books. Along the way, he witnesses Kabir drawing on the Buddha, often restating ancient suttas in joyous ways. The Notbook of Kabir is the result of this pursuit with no end in sight. This is the story of how Anand loses himself trying to find Kabir. You can check out the YouTube list of relevant Kabir's songs curated by S. Anand here. Dr. Pria Anand joins Google to discuss her book, "The Mind Electric: A Neurologist on the Strangeness and Wonder of Our Brains." The book demonstrates the compelling paradox at the heart of neurology; that even the most peculiar symptoms can show us something universal about ourselves as humans. Dr. Anand is a neurologist at the Boston Medical Center and an Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine. She is a graduate of Yale University and Stanford Medical School, and she trained in neurology, neuro-infectious diseases, and neuroimmunology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. When Ike Anand flew into Memphis in the summer of 2020—just one of four passengers on an otherwise empty plane, double-masked with a face shield—he was answering what he calls a calling he couldn't ignore. After 15 years scaling Expedia's global network in Seattle, Anand left the tech world to become the seventh CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Now he's leading the charge on a $12.9 billion strategic plan while reimagining what it means to be a tech-forward nonprofit in an age of viral content and AI-driven personalization. In this conversation, Anand reveals how speed, data, and culture are reshaping one of America's most beloved charitable institutions. It's Ike Anand on The Business of Giving.
For some they're the stuff of nightmares, but many of us can't get enough of horror films. For Halloween, CrowdScience investigates the science of why we enjoy films that scare the living daylights out of us. CrowdScience listener Maria from Taiwan is one of those people who would rather avoid frightening films, yet her husband loves them and is always trying to get her to watch with him. She wants to know why people like her husband are so drawn to horror films. To try and find out, presenter Anand Jagatia travels to the Recreational Fear Lab in Aarhus, Denmark, which is dedicated to understanding why people frighten themselves for fun. He meets the research lab's directors Mathias Clasen and Marc Andersen who explain how horror and recreational fear could help us cope better with uncertainty, bond with those we are frightened beside, and perhaps even have some physical health benefits. They also take Anand to a haunted house, called Dystopia, which has used the Recreational Fear Lab's research to become as terrifying as possible. And we hear from horror film music composer, Mark Korven, who creates tension and fear using an invention he calls ‘the apprehension engine'. He speaks to BBC Naturebang's Becky Ripley who has been investigating sounds that scare us and their evolutionary origins. Anand Medepalli of Shippeo talks about why most supply chain transformations fail; good data; workflows focused on outcomes; and why AI isn't a quick fix. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [03.57] An introduction to Anand and Shippeo. “Our goal is to provide trustworthy data so you can make decisions. Your supply chains are constantly hit with disruptions – it's no longer a disruption here, a disruption there. It's actually tranquility here, tranquility there, and disruption the rest of the time!” [07.40] The latest Gartner data on the state of supply chain digitization, and why most transformations fail to deliver the promised value. “Businesses run out of energy – these are big projects. People think: ‘We must architect the whole thing before we can do anything,' so perfect becomes the enemy of good, fast... Digitization doesn't happen because someone has a grand vision, it's the incremental steps you take towards it.” [14.09] Why AI isn't a quick fix for all your digitization challenges. “It's not a magic wand, you can't just sprinkle AI and think things will work... And the problem is that, particularly the LLM models, have been trained to please you.” [16.07] Why data is the foundation for success, and the importance of building trust. “It used to be that, when these disruptions happened, even if you didn't have the perfect data at hand to make a decision, you at least had the human capital to be focused on figuring it out. So reactivity was a plausible strategy.” [21.29] How Shippeo is investing in data quality, and why it's so critical as they support customers on their digitization journeys. [27.21] Why visibility alone isn't enough, and how people, AI, and good data also need to be weaved in to drive success. “Visibility is not enough – engagement is required. And, if I engage with that, what are the actions that I need to take to overcome the problem?” [30.39] Why workflows are crucial, and how they help to bridge the gap between ‘knowing' and ‘doing.' “Don't get caught up in the buzzwords, or worry that you're missing out… Think: “If I can solve this problem without AI, why aren't I solving it?” Solve it, then challenge yourself to make it better.” [35.58] How to define simple but effective workflows that focus on outcomes. [42.34] The business impact you can create by working with Shippeo. “You can live with fewer surprises, let Shippeo give you a little more tranquility.” RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: Head over to Shippeo's website now to find out more and discover how they could help you too.
