Our brains can feel remote and abstract. Hidden behind Latin names and textbook diagrams, they rarely feel as personal to us as our hearts and stomachs. In this episode, neurologist and author Pria Anand helps us get a little more intimate with that grey, wrinkly seat of our consciousness.Together we explore both the structural architecture and the musical synchronies of the brain. We travel across the left and the right brain, "listen" to the meaning of different brain waves, and discuss some of the most perplexing examples from the annals of neuroscience. What emerges is not just an intimate journey through the organ that makes us who we are, but also an exploration on the meaning of pain, identity, and storytelling. As always, we finish with my guest's reflection on humanity.

In this GMS Podcast episode, host Ingrid sits down with Dr. Anand Hiremath, CEO of the Sustainable Ship and Offshore Recycling Program (SSORP), to examine two sharply different approaches to ship recycling and what they mean for ship owners worldwide. The conversation starts with Canada's Deep Water Recovery case in British Columbia, where regulators found repeated toxic discharges of heavy metals such as copper and lead, weak pollution controls, and long legal disputes. This case illustrates the environmental and business risks of recycling a vessel without strong oversight and clear waste-handling systems. Dr. Anand then takes listeners to Alang, India, where more than one hundred ship recycling yards are certified under the Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) and many also meet EU Ship Recycling Regulation standards. Key insights include: How HKC yards build a Ship Recycling Plan from a detailed Inventory of Hazardous Materials before a vessel arrives. Use of impermeable flooring and closed drainage to capture and treat oil, paint scrapings and wash water, preventing ocean contamination. Worker training and ISO 45001 safety systems, with protective equipment, insurance and family health coverage. Independent audits by ClassNK, Lloyd's Register and other IACS members, ensuring constant compliance instead of slow court battles. Circular economy benefits: re-rolling 75 percent of hull steel cuts energy use by about 58 percent and avoids around 1.6 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel compared with melting in European dry docks. Regulated removal and off-site treatment of hazardous waste such as asbestos. Dr. Anand explains why HKC-compliant beaching in Alang can match or exceed dry-dock recycling in environmental performance, while offering the scale and steel reuse rates global shipping needs. For ship owners, cash buyers and maritime professionals, this episode provides practical guidance on choosing a ship recycling destination that is verifiably safe, cost-effective and climate-friendly. CrowdScience listener Kerry started thinking about his sentimental attachment to his possessions when he began sorting through an old trunk, full of objects from his past. He wants to know why we get so attached to things that often have no use anymore and why it's so hard to give them away. Anand Jagatia investigates why the objects we accumulate during our lives mean so much to us. He talks to psychologists Mary Dozier and Melissa Norberg and finds out that our possessions offer stability and comfort from the earliest age. That keepsake you brought home from your holiday may also stir memories about days gone by - and that's one reason why we may find it hard to part with the things we own, because they help us to access our emotions. And the items we collect through our lives can come to represent our identity too. Anand visits the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb, Croatia, where people from all over the world have donated possessions from relationships that ended, whether romantic or family, and discovers that sentimental attachment is universal. President Trump wants a new census that excludes undocumented immigrants and reflects post-election data. But experts say such a change would require congressional approval and disrupt years of planning for the 2030 count. Vierailunsa aikana Kanadan ulkoministeri Anita Anand antoi haastattelun Maailmanpolitiikan arkipäivää -ohjelmalle. Maailmanpolitiikan arkipäivää -ohjelman on toimittanut Paula Vilén. Mango Bae is back with indie rock legend Anand Wilder (co-founder of Yeasayer, now flying solo with his new album Psychic Lessons). He also unveils his absurd 1-800-BOG-PEOPLE hotline, blending surreal humor with sharp truths. It's music, madness, and Mango at its finest—equal parts hilarious, unfiltered, and dangerous.

Send us a textEver wondered how an entire nation discovers a medium that's been thriving elsewhere for decades? Meet Gautam Raj Anand, widely known as "the father of podcasting in India," whose remarkable journey from bored banker to pioneering podcast innovator reveals what happens when necessity meets opportunity.Gautam's story begins with corporate firewalls that blocked traditional entertainment but overlooked podcasts—a serendipitous oversight that led to his 14-hour-a-day listening habit. This personal discovery sparked a data-driven revelation: India possessed the perfect conditions for podcasting to flourish—high commute times, cheap data, numerous languages, and a rich oral tradition—yet remained virtually untouched by the medium. The challenge? Most Indians had never heard the term "podcast," and those who had associated it with expensive Apple products they couldn't afford. What follows is a masterclass in problem-solving as Gautam walks us through building Hubhopper, evolving from a simple content aggregator to a comprehensive ecosystem addressing each barrier to podcast creation and consumption in India. His team had to forge partnerships with music platforms, in-cab entertainment, and news applications to create distribution channels where none existed. The results speak volumes—India has transformed from a podcast desert to the world's third-largest podcast market in less than a decade.Particularly fascinating are the distinct differences between Western and Eastern podcast consumption patterns. While Western listeners embrace hour-long shows focusing on true crime, sports, and comedy, Indian audiences prefer shorter episodes (under 25 minutes) with religious and devotional content leading by a significant margin. These insights reveal how cultural contexts profoundly shape media consumption even within the same medium.Whether you're a podcast creator, media entrepreneur, or simply curious about global digital trends, Gautam's perspective will transform how you think about content creation across cultural boundaries. Subscribe now and discover how sometimes all it takes is "20 seconds of insane courage" to spark a revolution that changes how an entire nation communicates.Support the showGot a question about something you heard today? Hello and welcome back to First Principles. I'm thrilled to bring you episode 46, my conversation with Anand Jain, the co-founder of Mumbai-headquartered customer engagement platform CleverTap.Anand and I were once colleagues at the media conglomerate Network 18. He got out before I did.In 2013 he and two of his colleagues, Sunil Thomas and Kondamudi, left Network 18 and decided to fire up their respective laptops and code a new customer engagement platform. In just a few months, WizRocket, as it was then called, found its first – albeit non-paying customer. Then, in fairly short order, word-of-mouth driven inbound Seed and Series A investments.Over time it became Clevertap, raising over $180M in VC funding and becoming a globally used and respected product. As it turns out though, one of Clevertap's operating philosophies is, well, First Principles. A strong reason is because Anand himself is a strong believer in it.At the age of 12 he lost his dad. Thus, at an age when kids are taught to focus only on studies, Anand started tinkering, repairing and learning computer programming to earn money to put food on the table. His first business was a scheduling system for lawyers in Ahmedabad, written in FoxPro. That was in 1994.His friends in college called him “khurpechi” in Hindi. Literally, that's a person who uses a khurpi – a gardening tool – to turn soil over to weed crops or plants. Colloquially though, that's a person who is curious, restless and is always meddling around with things that don't concern them directly.Along the way, Anand co-founded Burrp, one of India's first restaurant review portals, which got acquired by Network 18. While he was building and running Burrp, he also started manufacturing and selling pigeon spikes to shops, because he noticed there was no one doing that in India!“I shouldn't be here,” he told me. Why, I asked. He is not very smart, he replied. He doesn't have good educational pedigree. He did not even study computer science formally. But, he said, he is extremely hard working and believes that anything can be learnt through hard work and perseverance. You can see why First Principles is a concept that is dear to Anand.I asked him how happy he was on a scale of 10. He said 10.I asked him if he'd ever thought of retiring. He said never. Life is too short to not have fun, he said.Indeed, it is. So let's dive into episode 46, with Anand Jain, co-founder of Clevertap. This is part 2 of my conversation with him-This episode was produced by Hari Krishna, with mixing and mastering by Rajiv CN.Write to us at fp@the-ken.com with your feedback, suggestions and guests you would want to see on First Principles. If you enjoyed this episode, please help us spread the word by sharing and gifting it to your friends and family.
When listener Rob from Devon, UK, heard of a newly detected planet light years away, he was struck by the sheer scale the light must travel to reach us here on Earth. It got him wondering: How long does light last? What's the oldest light we've ever observed? And does light ever die? To find out, presenter Anand Jagatia calls on some of the brightest minds in astronomy and physics. Astronomer Matthew Middleton from the University of Southampton describes himself as “a kid in a sweet shop” when it comes to physics, and that enthusiasm comes in handy, because scientists still struggle to define exactly what light is. What we do know is that light comes in many forms, and choosing the right kind can peel back the cosmic curtain, revealing the universe's deepest and darkest secrets. That knowledge will prove vital in Anand's search for the oldest light ever observed. At the European Southern Observatory in Chile, staff astronomer Pascale Hibon gives Anand a behind-the-scenes look at the Very Large Telescope, one of the most advanced optical instruments on Earth, perfectly placed under some of the clearest skies on the planet. Light from the objects Pascale studies has often travelled for billions of years, making her images snapshots of the distant past. In a sense, she's pretty much a time traveller. If light has crossed the vastness of the universe to reach us, it must be unimaginably ancient. But what will become of it in the far future? Could we trap it and preserve it forever? “If we knew what light is, that might be an easier question to answer,” says Miles Padgett at the University of Glasgow, who has spent his career trying to pin it down. As Anand discovers, physics can be more philosophical than you might expect. From redshifted galaxies at the edge of the observable universe to exotic materials that can slow light to walking pace, CrowdScience explores whether we can catch light, how it changes over time, and why truly understanding it remains one of physics' most stubborn challenges. CrowdScience listener Jon started wondering how our teeth are created while he was in the dentist's chair. It took his mind off the drilling. He wants to know how our teeth are made, what goes into them and how come we only get two sets of teeth when other animals, like sharks, grow thousands of new ones throughout their lives.Anand Jagatia goes back to prehistoric times to discover how the story of teeth began millions of years ago. Palaeontologist Yara Haridy explains that teeth weren't designed originally for eating at all, but as a kind of armour on the exoskeletons of fish that was also sensitive to the environment. It turns out that our teeth in fact are part of our evolutionary success story. Biological anthropologist Peter Ungar reveals that we flourished as a species because our teeth are designed to get the maximum energy from our food. Anand discovers how teeth can even be grown in a lab when he meets researchers Ana Angelova Volponi and Xuechen Zhang whose team has managed to replicate the environment in which teeth develop. He also talks to Katsu Takahashi who has discovered a method for developing a third set of teeth. It's a whole new way of creating teeth that will change the way we make them.
