We just talked with former ABC News anchor and now fellow Substacker Terry Moran, and more than 2,000 of you, about the catastrophic Texas floods, the families directly involved, and what their tragedies and legacies tell us about America now.We spoke about: * Making the necessary connections between human tragedies and underlying causes — the kind of narrative the press tends to avoid* Why talking about climate change after a flood isn't politicization, but the exercise of care* How people who would do anything to protect the ones they love can live the kind of duality that lets them back the kinds of politics — like climate change denial — that endanger the people they love* How the new budget's passage — by people who should know better — reflects the same problem: supported by business elites who are dooming their own great-grandchildren, who are far from guaranteed to be as rich as they are* What happened to the American ethic of solidarity that ensured people looked beyond their own families' self-preservation to the national and global interest, and how can it be rebuilt?* Why the press isn't built to tell people the deep story behind breaking news stories, how that limits public understanding of issues on the scale of climate change, and how independent media might develop the kind of storytelling that can really inform* How we can imagine a tragedy like the July 4 floods, with deep systemic and political roots, being ignored and simply preserving the status quo — and how we might also imagine a future where it motivates people to change* And what kind of great-grandparents are we being now, for our future great-grandchildren?You won't want to miss this one, so just click on the video player above.Visit the link below to read Anand's essay on the flooding:And visit the following link to read our interview with Leah Hunt-Hendrix about her book, Solidarity:We are opening this video to all. A conversation with Anand Ethirajalu, farmer-turned-ecologist and project director for the Save Soil movement. We don't talk about it much, but we should: a remarkable transition has been unfolding on the Indian subcontinent over the past few decades. Hundreds of thousands- if not millions- of farmers have been trained in regenerative practicesand have successfully made the switch. Yes, with higher yields and greater profits, largely due to significantly lower production costs. In the conversation, we focus on one region where the Save Soil movement, led by Sadhguru, has been training more than 10,000 farmers per year. There are countless lessons to be learned. Soil can recover quickly, but shifting farmers' mindsets often takes much longer. One key strategy: don't risk the whole farm. Start with just 10%, and show immediate financial results—higher profits. Provide crucial support in the early years, especially during the first growing season.More and more farmers are also joining programs to plant permanent crops like timber and fruit trees, both as a form of insurance and with the broader goal of planting enough trees (currently over 12 million a year) to begin “harvesting the clouds”. More about this episode.==========================In Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food podcast show we talk to the pioneers in the regenerative food and agriculture space to learn more on how to put our money to work to regenerate soil, people, local communities and ecosystems while making an appropriate and fair return. Hosted by Koen van Seijen.==========================
No one really cares that CrowdScience listener Sam has a younger brother, but they do care about his sister. In fact, they're fascinated by her. That's because Sam and his sister are fraternal twins. He's been wondering all his life why he's treated differently. Could it be cultural? Twins have long appeared in classical mythology, revered literature, and playful comedies—captivating artists and audiences alike across time and continents. Or is there something more scientific behind our fascination? Why are twins special? Anand Jagatia investigates with Karen Dillon from Blackburn College in the USA, who says it's more complicated. Over the years we have created stereotypes of who and what twins are. Our perception has been warped by history and pop culture. As an identical twin herself, she knows firsthand how stereotypes can shape a twin's identity. Philosopher Helena De Bres from Wellesley College in the USA believes these stereotypes play on human anxieties. Their similarities and differences are derived from their biology, maybe our genes have more of an influence over our personalities and behaviours than we like to think? And Nancy Segal agrees, Director of the Twin Studies Centre at California State University in the USA. She has spent her career studying twins. She's found that nearly every trait, whether it be behavioural or physiological, has a genetic component to it. Anand is sure to leave you thinking that Sam, his sister and all the other twins across the globe, really are special! What if the key to better sex isn't new, but rooted in ancestral knowledge? In this episode, Shan sits down with storyteller, mythologist, and ancient erotica expert Seema Anand to explore the rich, and yes, deeply sexy, history of sexual liberation, and why it's never really been a modern idea. Together, they unpack what it means to reconnect with your desire through ancestry, ritual, and unapologetic self-expression. We're returning to attachment theory this week as we go over some of the criticisms it has faced since rising in popularity. For some, attachment theory has been a powerful tool of self-discovery, but others dismiss it as pseudo pop psychology. Where do you fall on that spectrum of credibility? Today we're discussing the cases for and against attachment theory and whether or not non-monogamy can help heal unhealthy attachments. Listener Christine wants to understand one of the strangest phenomena in the universe. But to get to grips with it, she'll need a crash course in the bizarre behaviour of the very small. Here, things don't act the way you might expect — and it's famously hard to wrap your head around. Anand Jagatia has assembled some of the sharpest minds in the field and locked them in a studio. No one's getting out until Christine and Anand know exactly what's going on. Or at least, that's the plan. On hand to help are Kanta Dihal, lecturer in science communication at Imperial College London; James Millen, King's Quantum Director at King's College London; and particle physicist Harry Cliff from the University of Cambridge. Prepare to enter the world of the very small—and the very weird—where particles can be in two places at once, influence each other across vast distances, and seem to decide what they are only when observed. Hear how these once-theoretical oddities are now driving a technological revolution, transforming everything from computing to communication. Elon Musk is leaving Washington this week. Bye, Ketamine Felicia! What does his departure tell us?One thing is that, in some very important ways, democracy is still working, Anand told the “Morning Joe” crew earlier today. But the human damage Musk has done far outweighs any economic damage #Teslatakedown has done to his personal wealth. How much? Boston University health economist Brooke Nichols has crunched the numbers, and they're sobering: as of this writing, DOGE cuts have led to 300,000 deaths — five times the death toll of U.S. service members in the Vietnam War.DOGE teams remain in place, so it's not yet time to relax. But as Anand said today:The courts work still, not perfectly, there's problems, but courts work, lawsuits work, and pressure works, and people raising their voice works. And it's not just that Washington always wins. I think the people always win.The Ink is powered by readers, not billionaires. Periodically on TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'm DOING , we share a SPOTLIGHT conversation and feature brief chats with an individual from the community about a special topic or a unique endeavor. Now while we truly should strive for mental wellness all the time, May is mental health awareness month, and there's no more obvious place to focus our energy than on something we too often take for granted… our breathing. So I'm going to take a yogic approach, drawing from the teachings of both my parents who are yoga instructors and remembering some of the daily habits of my grandparents. Breathing is essentially the most outward demonstration of our “prana”, the Sanskrit word that refers to our innate universal life force, and through “ayama” the Sanskrit word which means to regulate or control or lengthen, we can therefore use the practice of "pranayama" to not just consciously understand our breathing, but also optimize and even increase that life force and harmonize our mind, body, and spirit. Now whether it's deeply practicing this living science of pranayama or simply pausing briefly to become more conscious of our breathing, the benefits can be quite extensive for so many physical and mental concerns. So it was especially terrific to have a conversation about…well… breathing with Dr. Amit Anand, who is a pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine specialist AND a master yoga teacher - truly a breathing superhero. With an academic medicine background, training in both Mumbai at KEM and in Boston at Harvard, Amit has been a rigorous practitioner, clinical teacher, and researcher. Fortunately for many patients and students alike, he has taken his experience and integrated this evidence based medical approach with an expertise in yoga training, meditation, breathwork, and pranayama. Amit is the founder of Pranayamarx, leading live and online yoga workshops and pranayama courses. He is also the co-founder of Breathonance, a science-based breathwork experience that integrates the yogic teachings of Pranayama with resonant musical rhythms. I actually caught a live demo this year and I was struck by a few things: the importance of creating space for this, how little time was actually required vs the perception of what was required, and the beautiful convergence of music, meditation, and breathing. Now, I know that all of you know this, but the content and conversation here should not be taken as medical advice, and is for informational purposes only, and because each person is so unique, please consult your own healthcare professional team for any medical questions. And so as Amit and I caught up to chat, we started with the very basic question that was in front of both of us particularly as doctors, in why we all tend to be so painfully unaware of our own breathing? And you can visit breathonance.com to learn more about Amit's vision and the musical expertise of co-founder Clint Valladares

Give everyone a quick introduction.Topic 2 - Our topic today is Preventing AI Model Hallucinations. Before we dig into that, I wanted to ask about your time as Lead Data Scientist at Meta. What was it like to be early into that organization, and what did you take away from your time there? Topic 3 - Ok, let's dig into model evaluations and hallucinations. Let's start at the beginning. How do model hallucinations come about?Topic 4 - When evaluating models for hallucinations, how does a developer or a data scientist know fact from fiction? Due to its size, complexity, and number of parameters, it's not feasible to simply fact-check and manually verify inputs to outputs. How is this process evaluated and automated with some level of confidence? Additionally, numerous benchmarks are available. What are your thoughts on the usefulness of the benchmarks?Topic 5 - How does the concept of data quality play into this? How would we know when a model was given insufficient or improper data vs. a hallucinationTopic 6 - We often hear about how frontier models are running out of training data, and increasingly, synthetic data is being used. Does this impact hallucinations in any way?Topic 7 - The last item I wanted to ask you about, Partonus AI, also pertains to model optimization. Can you explain that process?Topic 8 - If anyone is interested, what's the best way to get started?FEEDBACK?Email: show at the cloudcast dot netBluesky: @cloudcastpod.bsky.socialTwitter/X: @cloudcastpodInstagram: @cloudcastpodTikTok: @cloudcastpod

This week on Hafta, Newslaundry's Abhinandan Sekhri, Manisha Pande, and Anand Vardhan are joined by The Hindu's Dinakar Peri, who covers defense and strategic affairs. The episode opens with a discussion on the India-Pakistan military escalation, focusing on both the media narrative and strategic implications of the recent strikes.Critiquing Indian news media's coverage of the conflict, Manisha says, “In the middle of operations… the Army… was putting out fact checks, contrary to what these channels were doing.” She underscores how the media acted counter to national interest. “PSYOPs are directed at enemies. They're not directed at your own people drowning them down in misinformation.”Responding to a few journalists' arguments that the ‘misinformation' was part of India's warfare, Abhinandan adds, “It suddenly appears that it is somehow a journalist's job… to become cheerleaders for the military.”Dinakar, speaking as a defense journalist, emphasises how this hinders real reporting, “Nowadays, the bigger part of journalists is to actually defer the real news from the fake news… You spend a lot of time trying to find what is correct… because social media goes to a different level.”Anand adds, “Even if you are pedaling falsehoods, you have to look serious… If you are doing it in a melodramatic tone… no one is going to take you seriously.”The panel agrees that much of the media coverage undermined India's credibility. As Abhinandan puts it, “If you cannot trust them at war time, why should you trust them in peace time?”The conversation then shifts to military strategy and diplomacy. Dinakar says, “From a military sense, it kind of sets up a threshold… a differential between the two countries in terms of military symmetry.” Anand sees strategic gains for India, “One obvious gain… it has called out Pakistan's nuclear bluff… and it's a good advertisement for India's weapons set.”This and a lot more.
