Nib is a prolific artist whose work includes still lifes as well as abstract and narrative paintings.Over 100 of Nib's paintings spanning more than 40 years of work will be in the exhibit, which opened this week at Zeitgeist's Gallery Cafe and runs through July 30. The exhibit will expand to the Zeitgeist's Atrium July 2–30, where some of Nib's larger works will be hung. The paintings are for sale as well.Sing me a SongAmanda Helling is an improviser from Minneapolis, and she appreciates the musical improv abilities of Hannah Wydeven. Her ability to make up engaging songs on the spot is on full display in her show “Sad Songs for Happy People,” which runs Fridays in May at 9:30 p.m. at Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. It's part of The Residency at the venue that pairs two 25-minute improv shows in an evening; Darth Hogbeef is the partnering act.“Sad Songs” will also help kick off the Twin Cities Improv Festival, which runs June 5–8 at the Phoenix Theater in Minneapolis.Amanda says: Hannah is an engaging musical improviser, and her show is very interactive. I'm always blown away by people who can improvise songs that sound almost preplanned, and Hannah is at the top of that game. Between the total 4th-wall break and the music that, despite being called “sad songs,” is often riotously funny.Hannah's show is a tour de force. “Sad Songs” would be at the top of my list of suggested shows to introduce someone to long-form improvisational theater.— Amanda HellingTell Me a StoryPeter Bretl of Minneapolis calls himself an enthusiastic amateur storyteller, and he's really been enjoying taking classes and attending open mic nights at the American School of Storytelling in Minneapolis. He appreciates the coaching to help him tell stories more comfortably before a crowd, and he recommends that anyone who is interested show up at an open mic night and add their name to the list of speakers for an opportunity to tell a story of up to 10 minutes in length.Open mic nights for storytelling are the third Monday of the month (next event: Monday, May 19 at 7 p.m.) and open mic nights for poetry are every fourth Monday (next event: Monday, May 26 at 7 p.m.)Peter says: The venue itself is delightful. I think seating capacity is 36, so you feel almost surrounded by friends. There's an intimacy to it that I really, really like. And the crowds there are very supportive. Everyone wants you to succeed.— Peter Bretl

Arresting a sitting MP isn't something you do without Parliament's approval. That's the law. The NIB's invasion of Rev. Ntim Fordjour's premises and their attempt to arrest him was a clear breach of procedure. - Hon. Ben Abdallah Banda, Former MP for Offinso South Constituency

We will not allow Rev. Ntim Fordjour's arrest today. The NIB has no authority to make a forced arrest using guns on him. However, tomorrow, the Minority Leader will escort him to the NIB to assist with the investigation. - NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye

We all have gaps. Gaps in our awareness of others' feelings, in how we communicate or don't communicate, or in the many ways we don't measure up particularly in dealing with people. Our emotional intelligence allows us to navigate through life and difficult times and, as such, the topic of emotional intelligence is one of great importance. McKay enlightens us on the subject today and how we can bridge the gaps many of us tend to have in our emotional lives. McKay starts with the story of the Golden Gate Bridge which was built despite the many apparent impossibilities and how this bridge has become a great landmark in the city of San Francisco. He likens us to this bridge - when we decide to improve our emotional intelligence, we bridge gaps that we have in our lives. Our host also discusses the impact of negative emotions and avoiding the ‘me-monster' that neglects the views of others, and identifies some ways to strengthen our emotional quotient - bridge gaps by seeing the views of others, and show genuine interest in things that interest them. McKay finishes up by sharing his message for us all to harness the power of time, use the NIB rule - Notice, Importance, and Belonging, and watch how strength comes into our lives as a result. The Finer Details of This Episode: - Creating landmark moments in your life; lessons from the Golden Gate bridge- Recognize that you have a gap- Why does your emotional quotient matter?- The impact of negative emotions- How do you avoid difficult emotions?- Ways to strengthen your EQ and bridge your gaps- Walk in the shoes of others- Harness the power of time- The NIB rule Quotes: “There's something about us or what we're doing that needs to be overcome, and this isn't easy.” “It's our shortfalls that are at the heart of our gaps in life. And here's the thing, bridging the gaps in our life is possible.” “It is critical to remember that we all have gaps, we all fall short, and sometimes we need to step up and do what we think isn't possible.” “When we overcome and become more of who we can and should be, we find landmark moments in our life.” “A ‘me-monster' is someone so self-absorbed that no one else matters. Someone who thinks and makes decisions out of their mood or need or perspective.” “It's easy in life to get so focused on ourselves, that we don't see the major things going on around us, and this makes us blind to the gaps that exist in our life and with people.” “EQ is the ability to perceive, control, and evaluate emotions. It is the ability to understand things from the view of other people, empathize with others, and overcome challenges in dealing with people and defuse conflict.” “Success in school is 75% IQ, and 25% EQ. In life, it's exactly the opposite.” “Every time we strengthen our emotional intelligence, we bridge a little more of the gap.” “When you can step into another person's view with ease, and empathize with their way of thinking, and do that with a variety of people, you don't get stressed or upset or thrown off course in life because you understand others.” “As we learn to catch our emotional reactions before we act them out, we become more...

This week Features co-director Marjorie Alford talks with cartoonist Bianca Xunise about their graphic novel Punk Rock Karaoke. The two discuss the confusion of early adulthood, finding grace for the people you love, how a lack of representation in the media lead to Bianca filling that void for themself, and most importantly, punk rock. "I put so much of my heart and my own punk experiences into this story that I want to sit with it. I want to be with this beautiful piece of art that I made." - Bianca Xunise, on why they won't be rushing into their next project. Bianca Xunise is a cartoonist based out of Chicago, Illinois. Their work primarily focuses on the plight, joy, and daily struggles of misfits within the black community. In 2017 Xunise earned an Ignatz for Promising New Talent for their comic Say Her Name, an autobiographical story of police brutality and social justice. In 2020 Xunise earned their second Ignatz for their contribution to Be Gay, Do Comics published by IDW. Xunise has collaborated with Vogue, The Washington Post, The Nib, and Believer Magazine. They are also a contributor to the book How We Fight Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance along with Ta-Nehisi Coates, Tarana Burk, and Harry Belafonte. Bianca became the first nationally syndicated non-binary cartoonist when they joined the comic strip Six Chix in 2020 as their first black creator. Punk Rock Karaoke is out now! This interview features songs highlighted in Punk Rock Karaoke. Tracks included: Lake Shore Drive - The Cell Phones Waiting Room - Fugazi I am A Poseur - X-Ray Spex Photo Credit: Bianca Xunise

The Runs Podcast Season 2 Finale! We're closing out strong, with another deep dive into Peter Bagge's Indy comics canonical series, Hate, with Whit Taylor (Fizzle, Dead Air, The Nib), who is one of my very favorite people to dish comics with. We get into the nuts and bolts of this series, which really arrives at its fully-formed self in these issues. Great character development, compelling stories, and unique and expertly crafted cartooning is present in each issue. We also discuss some of the aspects of the series that are more difficult to talk about, as what was controversial in the 90's may be unacceptable for some audiences today. Does it hold up? Listen and find out! Thanks so much to everyone who listened to this season! Drop me a line if you want me to do another one. Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes. With The Nib, cartoonist & editor Matt Bors helped build an online (and print!) venue for political satire, graphic journalism and non-fiction comics that featured some of the best names in comics and gave space to a bazillion up-and-comers. Matt & I sat down during CXC to talk about his decision to close down The Nib after 10 years, how it felt to bring together the best political cartoonists under a single online umbrella, how tech money giveth and taketh away, and what this fall's farewell tour means to him. We get into what comes after The Nib (like Justice Warriors comic), how it felt to see one of his comics displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives, the challenges & rewards of building a diverse roster of cartoonists, why he always wanted a print companion of The Nib, and how mainstream comics and dystopian science fiction have always held an appeal for him (and why he'd love to do more with his Wasteland characters). We also discuss how it feels to have traded America for Canada and how the move has changed his perspective, the ways his post-Nib self spends less time getting mad online, how he plans to catch up on all the comics he's missed in the last decade, what it's like having his first two-week stretch as an adult without immediate editorial deadlines, and more! When his partner is tragically killed by a self-driving bus, the seasoned Swamp Cop of Bubble City finds himself paired with the rookie Schitt. Richard Osborne does NOT explain the three seashells, and such is the touch of a great novelizer. This week on Authorized, we tackle the Demolition Man with the creative minds behind Justice Warriors, Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson. The book, while no peach, actually explains where Stallone's daughter is. If anything, it reveals what a mess of a film we're dealing with. One thing's for sure: Osborne has a grip on the voice of Simon Phoenix.
