Jordan Perry is a songwriter and guitarist who has been involved in many projects. He has recently released two albums of classical guitar compositions. I wanted to interview Jordan when I learned that he once worked as a guitar teacher at a school in Ramallah in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. In this interview Jordan refers to his own process of creating music as a mode of inquiry. This mode of inquiry allows him to meditate on and explore systems and patterns that catch his attention. But his aim is more to explore and pose questions, rather than to seek resolution. Jordan is also a host of a radio broadcast called World Turning, which airs in Charlottesville on WTJU 91.1 and WTJU.net This episode of Pink Noise featured these tracks: Crime Times from S/T by Jordan Perry Jordan's Piece from Oudopia by Dimitri Mikelis Witness Tree from Witness Tree by Jordan Perry You can find more episodes of Pink Noise by subscribing to this podcast, or by visiting pinknoisepod.com

Today we're going to hear from Gemma Gamarra and Marco Albano, members of the Barcelona-based band Berlinist. They are the creators of the soundtrack of the video game Gris. I met Gemma & Marco in 2013 when I was on tour in Spain. At the time, Gris was not yet in development, but it was clear Marco was interested in combining his passion for music and games. The idea of the game Gris started with illustrator Conrad Roset - the game's Art Director. Playing the game involves exploring a beautiful and strange world based on Conrad's illustrations. The player has to solve location-based puzzles to advance to new areas. Gemma & Marco's soundtrack enhances the otherworldly feeling. Gris has been nominated for a bunch of awards. They've received 4 nominations in the 2019 SXSW Gaming Awards including Excellence in Musical Score, Excellence in Art, Excellence in Visual Achievement, Most Promising New Intellectual Property. I talked to Gemma & Marco about working with the art director and programmers to compose their music and incorporate it into the game.

Michael R. Oldham is a composer and pianist from Chicago. Michael's compositions work with variations on a theme -- themes punctuated by so many individual motifs, then revisited as an oblique variation, as if the living theme is undergoing a rapid metamorphosis. Michael cites surrealism as an influence on his work, and it can sound as if the music is playing tricks on you, as if a pattern of notes could change colors before your eyes. Michael told me about some of his early experiences with music and movies, his dreams of Hollywood, and how he uses storytelling and visual art to add layers of depth to his inspired work. This episode features: "The Apartment" (From 3 Vignettes) "Crying in Topanga Canyon," and "A Solitary Venture On An Accidental Breeze" (from Los Angeles Miseries) "The Kiss," and "Mad Hatter Romance", from the forthcoming album In Select Theaters, and "Secret Volcanic" (from "Grand Delusions on a Small Scale.") All pieces written and performed by Michael R. Oldham. Violin on "The Apartment" was performed by Lillian Chou. Check out www.MichaelROldham.com for more music

Albert Bagman is the burlap masked character created by songwriter and visual artist Kory Johnson. This intensely visual project delivers tenderly emotive music with a flare for the theatrical. We talked about how living and working in relative isolation inspires his forlorn songwriting, and about how anxiety and stagefright led to his creation of a masked persona.
