Sailor and artist, Brechin Morgan, circumnavigated the globe solo. Alone on the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, he welcomed the companionship of a Swallow-tailed Gull, flying off of the bow stay in front of the boat, like a little shadow of moonlight floating back and forth, almost all night long. Brechin saw other birds on his voyage, too. He said, "They were friends in the middle of the void. Amazing visitors – I couldn't understand how they managed to get 1,500 miles from the nearest piece of rock and survive. Happy Podcast day, one and all!  Welcome to back to The Big Year Podcast.  Thank you once again for joining me.   It's April 15, 2025 and spring migration is well underway here in southwestern Ontario.  It's actually a bit of a miracle that I finished this episode on time because the last 2 weeks have been very busy for me and my fellow birders.  It started with a Western Grebe in Port Credit, a Black-headed Gull, at Port Colborne, followed by a Long-billed Dowitcher right here in Brant County.  The fun continued with over 50 American White Pelicans at Holiday Beach and a female Harlequin Duck down in Chatham-Kent.  I also go my first Ruffed Grouse and Common Loon for Brant County, but the real excitement was the chase for a Crested Caracara in Essex County, not too far from the Ontario/Michigan boarder, on April 7.   Dozens of birders flocked to the small town of Amherstburg for a once in a lifetime look at this large falcon that lost its way.  This bird should have been in Texas, and after a long day of searching seemed to have returned home.  I had then tried for a Yellow-headed Blackbird back in Chatham, but near blizzard conditions sent me home to contemplate missed opportunities.  However, on Wednesday the weather was nice again, so I decided to go back and look for the Yellow-headed Blackbird.  To my complete surprise, before I even arrived at McGeachy Pond, I was alerted to the return of the caracara, not in Amherstburg, but right there in Chatham, only 15 minutes from where I was parked at the side of the road.   Talk about being in the right place at the right time.  I drove, I saw, I counted a new Canada Lifer!  And I got to spend time with some of my favourite birding friends, including Kelly Sue, who you met on season one of the podcast.  She lived only 5 minutes away.  And yesterday we had another rare bird party as dozens of us migrated to Stoney Creek for a rare spring sighting of a Loggerhead Shrike.  And all through that I was trying to find time to finish this podcast.  Not only that, it's the onset of allergy season and my head feels like it's full of teddy bear stuffing.  Today's episode features Robert Gundy and Natasza Fontaine.  Robert is a biologist and Natasza was the 2024 ABA Bird of the Year Artist, painting the Golden-winged Warbler.  And they both completed a record setting (Covid)Florida Big Year in 2020.   

Edmundo Martinez's patches are Starlight and Concrete Parks in the Bronx. He has seen inland birds including warblers and woodpeckers as well as aquatic birds like herons and egrets. The Bronx River, New York City's only fresh water river, flows through these parks. Martinez birds big parks like Pelham Bay Park (2,722 acres) and small parks like Hunts Point Riverside Park (1.4 acres). He purposefully birds smaller parks in Black and brown communities to show that you don't have to leave your neighborhood to observe the species of birds typically associated with Central Park. Martinez found his way to birding while cycling; “I'm a big cycling guy,” he said. Special Judge Fran Gull has rejected efforts by Richard Allen's attorneys to overturn his murder conviction in the Delphi murders case, denying multiple defense motions aimed at securing a retrial. Despite Allen's conviction and sentencing to 130 years in prison for the 2017 murders of Liberty "Libby" German and Abigail "Abby" Williams, his attorneys continue to argue that key evidence was withheld and new information has surfaced. In an order dated Feb. 14, Gull denied the defense's Verified Motion to Correct Error, a request filed on Jan. 20 seeking to vacate Allen's conviction. She also denied a second motion filed on Feb. 14 to strike the state's response, as well as a motion to correct the abstract of judgment. These rulings were entered into the case record on Feb. 18 and were made without a hearing. The defense's latest challenge revolves around an Indiana inmate, Ricci Davis, who claims that two men—Ron Logan and Kegan Kline—confessed their involvement in the murders. Logan, who owned the land where the girls were found, allegedly admitted to Davis that he committed the murders and provided details only the killer would know. Davis says Kline, a convicted child pornographer, later corroborated Logan's statements and expressed relief after Allen's conviction, believing it would keep him from being a suspect. Davis claims he sent as many as eight letters to Carroll County Prosecutor Nick McLeland during Allen's trial, detailing what he was told. He also alleges that he provided a recorded interview to police. However, Allen's defense team has never seen these letters or the interview, and McLeland has refused to confirm whether they exist or were shared with the defense. “Ricci Davis was shocked to learn that Baldwin had never received this videotaped interview,” the defense wrote in their motion, referencing a conversation between Davis and Allen's attorney, Andrew Baldwin, in February 2025. The defense has accused McLeland of withholding evidence and failing to disclose whether the letters and recorded statements exist.
