Welcome back to another chaotic and hilarious episode of SHENK! This week, Sarah Wine-Shank sits down with the brilliantly funny comedian, Dylan Carlino (host of the 'Feeling Girly' podcast). In this episode, Dylan shares his unforgettable out-of-body experience meeting Demi Lovato in first class and why he feels spiritually connected to the Olsen twins. Sarah and Dylan dig deep into the stark differences between the comedy scenes in Austin and LA, the toxic green room dynamics at Joe Rogan's Comedy Mothership, and the brutal reality of gay dating apps. From childhood weight struggles and body dysmorphia to deep-cut pop culture takes on Sydney Sweeney, Euphoria Season 3, and Amber Heard—nothing is off-limits.
In this episode of Big Blend Radio's “Lost Angel Travel Adventures” Show, travel writer and author Linda Ballou shares why she fell in love with Topanga Canyon, the artistic and spiritual enclave nestled in California's Santa Monica Mountains. From wildflower-covered hiking trails and sweeping ocean views to live music festivals, eclectic shops, and hidden gathering spaces, Linda explores the unique culture and community spirit that makes Topanga so special. Learn about the canyon's deep ties to music legends like Neil Young, Canned Heat, and The Doors, along with the history of beloved venues like The Corral. Linda also discusses local treasures including Theatricum Botanicum, the magical Inn of the Seventh Ray, the artistic sanctuary of Jalan Jalan Imports, and the vibrant community hub of Pine Tree Circle. The conversation highlights the canyon's hiking culture, Indigenous history, spiritual traditions, and the restorative power of nature that continues to draw artists, musicians, writers, and seekers to this hidden corner of Southern California. Plus, Linda reads from her essay, “My Season in the Canyon.”
My mom doesn't read this Substack. We sit on opposite ends of the great divide. But she doesn't hold my political shift against me, even if she doesn't understand it. When I visit her, I often find CNN or the BBC filling up the silence. The same messages drone on and on: Trump is bad, the world is coming to an end, it's all terrible. And there's my mom, absorbing it like a sponge. It's a wonder she talks to me at all. We get along because we studiously avoid any mention of the Orange Man or politics. She is always on one side, and I am almost always on the other. If it does come up, and she makes an off-handed comment, it's like someone lighting a match near a gas leak. We can't talk about it at all, none of it, and so we don't. I'm grateful that politics doesn't define her to the point that she would go “no-contact” with her own daughter. No one in my family went that far. I guess I'm lucky. I think they think I caught a crazy bug, and one day I will go back to normal. So we just tread water until things change. My mother's life wasn't what she wanted it to be, although whose is? She was a bright light who looked like an adult by the age of 12. At 14, she was pretending to be 16 to compete in beauty pageants. Here she is, at number 1.It wouldn't last long, just a few short years. But it must have made her parents proud to see her star rise that fast. She never knew her biological father and still doesn't, but those genes are partly what made her such a stunner. Not long after, she would meet a man, get pregnant, and drop out of high school. That would never become a marriage and a family. Eventually, she'd start working nights at Pandora's Box in Hollywood, where she met my dad, a Jazz drummer. My dad would split, and she'd be a divorced mom with four kids before the age of 25. She was still too young to understand what she'd done to her life by having us, but over time, it would start to sink in, everything she gave up to raise us instead of chasing her own dreams. It wasn't easy for her, that's for sure, but we had what was kind of like a little farm, with goats, chickens, and ponies on top of a mountain in Topanga Canyon. Because I grew up in the era of blaming your parents for your bad childhood, we didn't spend a lot of time thanking them for giving us life at all. We were too busy looking at what was wrong. But I can't pretend it was all sunshine and roses either. It wasn't. It was painful and explains why my life is the way it is now, at least partly.Understanding what shaped my life is different from blaming my mom, who really did do the best she could under the circumstances. We felt guilt throughout most of our childhood for having taken her life away from her. She gave up everything, it felt like, but now I bet she can't imagine her life without us.Back in the 1970s, parents didn't coddle their kids. We grew up like weeds. We had to learn how to survive, and it wasn't shameful to punish your children or leave them to fend for themselves. Or teach them hard lessons. It's just how it was. I don't remember being very close to my mom. She didn't comfort me when I cried. If anything, she tried to toughen me up. I was too sensitive for her liking. But I do remember her holding me in the Pacific, taking me out into the waves to show me that I could do it, since I was too afraid. I remember feeling close to her then, and it's one of the only times I've felt that way. I was still scared of the water, but I felt safe in her arms, and I'll forget how warm and soft her skin felt as I clung to her through the crashing waves. The truth is that we were lucky to have that life, at least in the early days before we left Topanga. We spent every morning until night living in the wild. We were always barefoot, always with our hands and feet in nature. I remember plunging into the mud during rainstorms, tasting different kinds of grass, watching the weather turn, and the smell of my pony's fur after a long ride. Ultimately, how things changed in the coming decades, after Columbine and 9/11, how kids were over-protected, I am grateful I got the harder, rougher childhood. It prepared me for right now, for living through this era of people mostly online, of coddled children, of dehumanizing each other and tribal warfare, of cancellations and assassinations, and overly medicated and emotional women who couldn't handle the election of the Orange Man. What I learned from my mom was hard work and resilience. The reason I work every single day, and have ever since I started working online over 20 years ago, is my mom. Her words have often echoed in my mind over the years, “Just do the next thing. Keep moving forward.” Then again, for both of us, work is something we understand. The complications of everyday life, especially relationships, not so much.Just do the next thing is how you manage a messy life, or a broken life, or even a hard life - something most Americans know nothing about. If you can just do the next thing, you will be halfway there. That reminds me of one of my favorite movies, The Edge (written by David Mamet). They decide they have to kill the bear because most people die in the wilderness of shame. They collapse in helplessness because they can't believe they were stupid enough to get themselves into a place where they might not survive. “They die of shame!”“What one man can do, another can do!” Doing the next thing means getting out of bed, making the bed, making coffee, walking the dogs, writing something, tweeting something. There is always something to be done, and doing that one thing pulls you along. It is the best way I know, other than praying, to live with the idea that one day I will die. Or one day my mom will die.My mom had to do the next thing because she had no choice. She couldn't waste a day lying around crying about a life she did not plan and didn't want. It might be true that she didn't realize how hard it would be to parent four kids, all on her own, before the age of 25. It might even be true that at some point, she realized she actually wanted to live a life of learning, of expanding her horizons, of becoming someone, like those early pageant days of promise. To her credit, she never abandoned us. She left for long periods, especially during my middle school years. Sooner or later, she'd come back. She stuck it out with dental appointments and bought us bikes she couldn't afford (that would then get stolen). She gave us a place to live and got us to school, much of the time. Perfect, no. But we survived. My mom flourished in life by doing the next thing. She never gave up on herself. She went from welfare to working as a cocktail waitress and then a bartender, to earning her real estate license, to becoming a property owner who could leave pieces of it to all of her children and grandchildren. I can't think of a greater success story of anyone I know personally. She doesn't really see it that way, I don't think. My guess is that she still mourns the person she might have been all of those years ago, before things changed so dramatically. She doesn't credit herself or pat herself on the back. She just does the next thing.Even this morning, when I talked to her on the phone, with her back problems that have meant she can't move around much anymore, she told me she walked around her yard, and everywhere she looked, there was something that had to be done. There is always another thing after the next thing. Happy Mother's Day to my strong, imperfect, glorious mom, who will never read this. I send it out to the universe anyway as an appreciation to all the moms, those who aimed for perfection and those who just did the best they could. Hope your day is full and that you can count your blessings of all you have right in front of you right now. // This is a public episode. OJ Simpson’s estate has agreed to pay nearly $58 million to the family of Ron Goldman, who was killed along with Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994. Although Simpson was acquitted in criminal court, he was later found liable in a civil trial and ordered to pay more than $33 million; interest and penalties have pushed the total dramatically higher. A flood advisory is in effect, and the show will be broadcasting live from Smart & Final in Yorba Linda this Friday, where Tim jokes about auctioning everything in his garage while begging the clouds to stop the rain. Attorneys representing survivors of the Eaton Fire in Altadena have filed a lawsuit against Southern California Edison and Genasys Inc., alleging the utility sparked the blaze and Genasys failed to send critical evacuation warnings, contributing to the death of a woman in the fire zone. Construction crews in both Topanga Canyon and Altadena are dealing with the latest round of storm damage and heavy rain impacts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

OK, let's get into the song! In Conversations with Tom Petty, Tom tells author Paul Zollo “I wrote that on the drive to the studio in Bugs' truck. My trusty roadie Bugs was driving me to work—and I got this idea for this song, “Billy The Kid.” I pulled out a pad as we were going over Topanga Canyon with all those curves, so I was really writing on the edge of the paper, and back and forth in the truck. And I wrote it all out on the way to work, and I had the tune in my head.” Any songwriter will tell you that it's massively exciting when that thunderbolt of inspiration hits and words or music come at you all at once. In this case, Tom had the words flowing and the tune only in his head, rather than it coming from sitting around noodling on the guitar and then framing in lyrics later. It's especially gratifying to hear for me because that's almost always how I write; a specific line or chorus and then some basic melody.Song : https://youtu.be/WHVywrWjjrQLive from the Fonda - 2013: https://tinyurl.com/26yv2c2fDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. Hunter S. Thompson wrote in his book Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail:The "mood of the nation," in 1972, was so overwhelmingly vengeful, greedy, bigoted, and blindly reactionary that no presidential candidate who even faintly reminded "typical voters" of the fear & anxiety they'd felt during the constant "social upheavals" of the 1960s had any chance at all of beating Nixon last year--not even Ted Kennedy--because the pendulum "effect" that began with Nixon's slim victory in '68 was totally irreversible by 1972. After a decade of left-bent chaos, the Silent Majority was so deep in a behavorial sink that their only feeling for politics was a powerful sense of revulsion. All they wanted in the White House was a man who would leave them alone and do anything necessary to bring calmness back into their lives.”It's hard to believe that the Democrats became so crazy that they made Trump seem like the normal one, the only person who could bring calm back into our lives.I felt happy the other day and thought, what is this strange feeling? It wasn't so much that I was happy with all of what Trump was doing, but he did the one thing that had been keeping me up at night - his Executive Order to end “gender-affirming care” for minors.I'm not foolish enough to think that these big moves Trump and his team are making will bring about permanent change, but he's shaking the tree, standing up to the most powerful forces in the country, and doing exactly what we, the voters, asked him to do.Trump isn't the problem. It's the crumbling empire that refuses to relinquish power and insists so many of its delusions and narratives must be adhered to, even now. Adam Schiff and Elizabeth Warren reminded us that they don't really seem to care about how the election turned out. They didn't even turn the page. They don't seem to have gotten the message that they're still considered too crazy to govern. It's the exact kind of crazy that drove Nixon to a landslide victory and eventually put Reagan in power, keeping Democrats out of the White House for the next 12 years. As things look now, that's exactly how it will play out.I sometimes peer into the crazy on TikTok. Women wearing red lipstick in silent protest. Young and old alike screeching and caterwauling at Trump supporters, pleading with them, mocking and dehumanizing them, then begging them to see Trump as the embodiment of all of the evil in the world. How frustrating it must be for them to know that the silent majority doesn't agree. How frustrating it must be that they keep screaming racists, Nazis, fascists! And still be seen as the crazier side. With the election of DNC Chair Ken Martin and Vice Chair David Hogg, they seem to be sending a message to their voters that they're done with the “woke” thing, and maybe now they can un-crazy themselves with two boring “white dudes.”The last time the Democrats tried to un-crazy themselves, it didn't go so well. After losing every state except Massachusetts in 1972 and the even worse Jimmy Carter presidency, the Democrats settled on the idea that bland and boring middle manager types were better than chasing the dream. This “bland and boring” reset doesn't undo the crazy but disguises it. Look to the future, they say. Gun control, they say. Bring the fight to the Republicans, they say. But they still can't solve the problem because they are the problem. The star, their Great White Hope, their version of the “bro-whisperer” to bring in the young people is David Hogg, mass shooting survivor turned activist influencer. And he's just Ken:The worst sign is that nothing much has changed except appearances. The party is still leaning into the establishment of old, which means they aren't sending a message to voters that they are, in any way, prepared to deal with the mess they made over the past four years. What should worry the Democrats, not that they will pay any attention, is that there is no plan to clean house, which is what they'd need to do to have any real pitch to win back the voters they lost. They seem to be doing the bare minimum, admitting nothing, with Barack Obama still guiding the ship. They really do think they can sweep it all under the rug — hiding Joe Biden's age, the Afghanistan withdrawal, the censorship machine, George Clooney op-ed, how Biden refused to leave, whatever they threatened him with, and the manufactured candidacy of Kamala Harris. How much better would it be for them if they admitted their party had become too corrupt to function? And too crazy to lead? But they won't because that other America still exists inside the utopian bunker they've been hiding in all this time.In choosing David Hogg, the Democrats prove they have no plans to roll back the crazy, which, of course, I already knew. This goes deeper for them than politics. This is who they are. This is how they see the world. With Martin and Hogg (which sounds like a leather boot manufacturer) they're sending a message to those of us who have defected from the party that nothing has changed. There were no lessons learned, no reckoning to be had.Says Adam B. Coleman:When I was a Democrat, we believed in classically liberal principles, like freedom of speech and fairness for all people, not just some people. They elevated serious and, dare I say, likable individuals within the party. At one point, The Democrats seemed like the "cool" party with aspirational and better ideas. But now, The Democrats are the party of dogma. There is nothing inquisitive or reflective about the party. They are verbal one-trick ponies, twisting their words to validate their end-goal ambition regardless if it works or not.I've seen tweets by people who are hoping their ongoing hysteria about Trump's first ten days will send people like me running back into their arms. But the problem has never been Trump. The problem has always been them, what they did to this country, what they did to the party, what they did to themselves.Just like the silent majority ran from them back in 1972 and 1980, so too are we all still okay with Trump, even with the chaos, because he's not them.It took me four years to realize that. But once you see it, you can't unsee it, and there is no going back, at least not until they clean house and un-crazy themselves. So we'll see bland candidates running for president as they attempt to tack to the center, but the crazy will follow them like toilet paper stuck to the bottom of their shoes. The “Mood of the Nation”The last time the Democrats scared America, I was just a kid. I grew up in Topanga Canyon around the same time as the Manson family lived there, not to mention it being a hotbed for old-time rock n' rollers, surfers, and cults. Nothing scared me as much as Charles Manson, whose face stared out at us from the cover of magazines. Those crazy eyes, that “X” scar between his brows. This is a public episode. The Canyons have long called to the bohemians and artists of Los Angeles. While Laurel Canyon is renowned for its role as a hub of rock history in the 1960s and '70s, Topanga Canyon has its own rich tapestry of stories. In this episode of My Rock Moment, we welcome Emmeline Summerton from the Instagram account Lost Canyons LA, a historian of the LA Canyons and former writer for the New Topanga Times. Together, we explore Topanga's iconic rock legends and the songs inspired by this enchanting area. Was there truly a roadhouse that sparked Jim Morrison's lyrics in “Roadhouse Blues”? Did a fateful house party in Topanga Canyon contribute to the breakup of one of the most successful bands of the late '60s? Which famous Topanga musician got his start with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention before forming his own band? And did Ronald Reagan's daughter really co-write a classic Eagles song? In light of the recent devastating fires, this episode pays tribute to the unique beauty of Topanga Canyon, nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains. Despite the challenges, this iconic area endures, and My Rock Moment is proud to celebrate its lasting rock 'n' roll legacy. I'm thrilled to have Georgie Fuller and Will Turner of The Heavy Heavy on the show this week!! Just off their amazing Fall tour in support of their debut full-length album, One of a Kind, Georgie and Will sit down to reflect with me on everything from touring, to their unique musical partnership, to the impact of bringing their retro-sounding but forward-facing vibe to audiences across the country and into the UK and Europe. A product of their love of the 60s and early 70s, Georgie and Will love that sound of a bygone era, but at the same time have created something entirely unique and absolutely stunning and special. All that said, these two are stellar humans who have a fun-loving and sweet vibe that sends ripples of positivity throughout their music, and who doesn't love that? We talk about it all in this amazing conversation. So let's all celebrate going back to the future with The Heavy Heavy!! About Roger Brown and TRAVELER FROM THE PAST: Roger Brown began his driving career at 11, driving a truck, pulling a hay wagon while three men, including my father, loaded baled hay on a 160-acre ranch in Banning, CA. Picked cotton two seasons starting at 12. Next driving job at 15 delivering sand, gravel, and building supplies with a dump truck in Topanga Canyon. It was larger 18-wheel rigs moving livestock, logs, locomotives, and heavy equipment, including rigs with 9-axles and 120 ft. in length. Cleaning up railroad train wrecks brought me to equipment operating, including 100-ton cranes. I fought forest and wildland fires during 55 years operating dozers and excavators. Worked as a diesel mechanic for several trucking companies and offshore oil drilling platforms—packed mules for three seasons in the National Parks. More About Author Roger Brown Travel was instigated at an early age; by 19, I had been to forty-seven states and four foreign countries. At 53 took early retirement, bought an ocean blue water sailboat, and set out on an epic voyage for the past 28 years. In between all of this designed and built timber homes in the California Sierras, and the blacksmith work and designed and built straw bale homes in Central Mexico and built roads in the jungle along the Mexican Coast. One of my mentors often liked to ask a couple of simple questions when we were together: first, “What is the Christian life?” and second, “What is the church?” At first glance, those feel like beginner questions. Of course we know what a Christian is and what church is about. But how many of our assumptions about our life in Christ together look more like being a twenty-first century North American more than an apprentice of Jesus in the here and now of our lives? To what degree are we letting the way of Jesus transform our expectations, our values and our pursuits into a very different way from the culture that surrounds us? John Mark is a teacher and writer from Topanga Canyon in Southern California. For nearly two decades, he was the founding pastor at Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon where he spent many years working out discipleship to Jesus in the post-Christian West, organized their community around a simple idea: practicing the Way of Jesus together. In 2021, after leading a five-year initiative around spiritual formation called “Practicing the Way,” John Mark stepped away from his pastoral role to create simple, beautiful formation resources for church communities around the world. Today, John Mark is developing new practices, courses, and podcasts for Practicing the Way and serves as a teacher in residence at Vintage Church LA with his wife and their three kids. ____________________________________________________Connect with Alan on LinkedIn or learn more about Unhurried Living programs on their website.
