There's Israel... and then there's Israel. Many Christians are confused about something God makes very plain in the New Testament: His plans for the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. In this court, we hear the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth - about you. Everyone desperately wants to think of himself as a "good person," and many convince themselves that the delusion is real. What do you mean by, "Hell?" Hell is the place you don't want to go when you die. That definition will work fine for most conversations. It's the place of anguish and torment. But Hades (or the lower compartment of Hades) is not the same place as the Lake of Fire, and it's worth thinking about how and why those are different. The Final Judgment. In our system of justice, we officially don't know whether you're guilty or innocent, until after the trial and verdict. And sometimes we don't really know whether you're guilty or innocent, even after that! In God's system, those who are righteous by faith have already been judged in our Representative. What's in your storehouse? The heavens are called, "the storehouse of His bounty." "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead." It isn't the cold cynicism or the scientism of our age that leaves people unpersuaded by the Resurrection of Christ. The battle for our salvation was decided not on Mount Calvary, but on the Mount of Olives. It was in the Garden of Gethsemane that the Lord wrestled with His own humanity to bring His will into alignment with the Father's. "Wrestled" is the right word.
