Killer angels. There was an award-winning book about the Civil War called The Killer Angels. But the bloody battle of Gettysburg is nothing compared to the one that will commence at the river Euphrates: Four angels, 200-million cavalry, resulting in the slaughter of a third of the world's population. When you hear these trumpets, it's too late! We get the sense, reading Revelation, that God isn't commanding new judgments to fall on the Earth; we don't hear Him pronouncing them. Instead, the punishment for man's rebellion has been "stored up," and is now being released, in stages. These trumpets are not for celebration! What we do today, matters. If we know for sure that we are saved by grace through faith apart from our works, then we own a priceless truth. But the devil can still use that truth against us! He tries to persuade Christians that because their conduct can't save them, therefore God doesn't care what they do. Will you come before the King empty-handed? We've heard Christians say, "I don't want any rewards. Being with Jesus will be enough for me!" John's task is to describe the indescribable God! "No one has seen God at any time," John wrote. But... John saw something, just as Ezekiel had seen a Being on the throne. Both compared the emanations that struck their eyes to the look of brilliant gemstones. We said yesterday that Heaven is not a metaphor. Do you believe in Heaven? I mean, really? We've been lulled to sleep about the realities of Heaven and Hell. Today these doctrines are dismissed as relics of an unenlightened age. "To Him who loves us, and..." "Jesus loves you" has become a trite phrase, partly because it's simple enough to be twisted by those who do not love you. When God puts His cards on the table. If I were to say, "Turn in your Bible to the book of Apokalypsis," you might become concerned about my mental health. What am I looking at, here? Sometimes we have to say to our kids, "That's a lovely picture - what is it?" We were guessing school bus, but the artist informs us it is a giraffe. A new lead singer steps up to the mic. The act known as "Barnabas and Saul" was about to become "Paul and Companions." That normally would be the end of the band. Lawyers would be retained, solo careers launched, bitterness nursed into old age. But that was not how the Son of Encouragement rolled, as we've seen. The Diaspora - the Christian one. In hindsight, maybe it wasn't the most brilliant strategy to persecute and scatter the young church. Because wherever those believers went, they talked about Jesus. Antioch was a model church because of its model minister, Barnabas. Yesterday we started to investigate this "son of encouragement" who was such a blessing everywhere he went. When he went to Antioch, that church eventually became not just a model church, but a missionary church and a merciful church. Who was the most successful Christian in the New Testament? Evidence won't do us much good without eyes! On the afternoon of the Lord's Resurrection His Disciples had the evidence of the Scriptures, but they didn't understand it. Meet the Holy Spirit! If the third Person of the Trinity seems veiled in mystery, that's understandable. After all, there's plenty about God the Father and God the Son in the Bible, and not very much directly about God the Holy Spirit. The problem with signs. "And these signs will accompany those who believe...," Jesus said. Or did He? We're pretty sure Mark didn't write the last section of the Gospel of Mark. We know the evidence for Jesus; what's the evidence for you? Maybe we can't know what the Resurrection is, but we can see what it does. It's a weird thing about life: People argue about when human life begins, or how all life began, but we have to admit that we can't define it. We can only see its effects. Maybe it's the same way with the special kind of life we call "resurrection." The women trudging to the tomb of Jesus on that Sunday morning didn't expect an angel - but he was expecting them!
