Your newsfeed needs an interpreter! Ideally journalists would tell us about events that really happened. But even then, those occurrences would need context, and some sort of key or template so that we could make sense of them. You're way ahead of me: The Bible is that key. Today's headlines are just random recitations without the grid of the eternal Word of God. Let's take another peek at the back of the Book, Revelation 13. Here's Jim with Part 2 of his message, Satanic Imagery. Is the Antichrist creeping up on us? Will we awaken one day to find the Mark of the Beast hidden in our computers, our phones, our watches? We know that the devil loves to quietly infiltrate our institutions - including our churches. The Snake is a sneak. But in the Last Days he'll be a lot less subtle. Big, worldwide signs and universal edicts will be his new style. Today, we'll learn some of that Satanic Imagery, with Jim. Here's the world's biggest geography problem! If the End Times prophecies are to be fulfilled - including some made by Jesus Himself - then we have an issue. We'll need a temple for the Antichrist to desecrate, and God's temple has only one possible location: on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. Not only is there no temple there now; there's a mosque on that hill! Here's Jim to give us the solution to this geography problem, in Part 2 of, Keep Your Eyes on Jerusalem. God has a clock... and a pin! The locator pin on God's map is stuck into 31.2 degrees North latitude, and 35.2 degrees East longitude: Jerusalem, Israel. That's the Last Days hot spot. If God is to fulfill His promises to the Jews, He has work to do in the City of Peace. That's why Jim says, "Keep Your Eyes on Jerusalem." A New Plymouth business is stamping its mark on the crazy world of American sports trading cards and sporting memorabilia. Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin has more.
Has Jesus returned already? Some early Christians were upset to hear that the Lord had come back, and they had missed it. That sounds kind of silly to us because we know that, when Jesus appears, no one will miss it! We have His word on that. And there are some events that must happen first. There's a mass de-conversion, for one thing; the Apostasy. And the capital-A Antichrist has to arise. We're in Daniel 9, talking not about the Rapture, but the Return. "Does anybody really know what time it is?" When it comes to reading the signs of the End, there's a lot of confusion. Some of that is intentional. Some of the befuddlement comes from putting too much stock in speculation - ours, or a teacher's. But Jesus wasn't confused. His watch was accurate to the nanosecond. He knew the prophetic time the same way we can know it: by the prophetic text. Here's Pastor Jim with part 1 of, So When You See...Be Sure to Flee. When God gets tired. Isaiah taught us that "the Creator of the ends of the earth be fainteth not, neither is weary." But God does grow tired of sin. He gets fed up with human injustice and arrogance and wickedness, just like we do. So, one day He'll dramatically push the chess pieces toward the end-game. We're in Ezekiel chapters 36 through 38 for the second half of Pastor Jim's message, When God Honors His Great Name. Bones... and breath! Ezekiel saw some crazy stuff! Creatures with four faces; wheels within wheels, covered with eyes; a throne with a glowing human on it; and that valley of dry bones. The people of God were demoralized, defeated and deported. Could they be re-animated? "Can these bones live?" We're looking at signs of the End. Ugly or an icon? The New Plymouth Power Station chimney has dominated the city's skyline since 1972. Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin reports.
To expect something but not be ready for it - why, that would be foolish! Half of the 10 virgins in Jesus' parable were foolish. They expected the Bridegroom to arrive... but they expected Him to arrive soon! They must have thought they had reasons to believe that. But they didn't really know the Groom - and that was their fatal folly. As we dive into Part 2 of the message, They Didn't Know, we're still looking at the Lord's answer to the question about when He'll return. Could something that's never happened, happen? By definition, if something has occurred, we know it can occur. But what about the unprecedented? We have a blind spot in this area, don't we? If something has never happened, in the entire history of the world, it's so unlikely that we'd be safe to think of it as impossible. That's an error that humanity fell into before the Flood. Is it our mistake, too? Here's Jim to begin his sermon called, They Didn't Know. After more than four years living in a motel room, a New Plymouth man paralysed in a fall is finally in a home of his own. Shane Emeny's Kainga Ora house has been modified for a wheelchair user and gives him the privacy he's craved since 2021. At long last he has also got a spare room for when his 11-year-old son comes to stay. Now, the 49-year-old wants to make sure no one is again left languishing for years in emergency accommodation - which comes at a hefty cost to the people there and the taxpayer. Jimmy Ellingham reports.
A Taranaki father has shared his sense of loss and anger following the death of his son in a one-punch assault. About 200 people gathered at the Tukapa Rugby Club in New Plymouth today to remember Daniel Nganeko and join a march calling for tougher penalties for coward-punch-style offences. Robin Martin reports.
Are you ready for the rain? There was only one way to be ready for the Flood, and that was to get in the Ark. Practicing your swimming "just in case" wasn't going to save anyone. It was the Ark, or death. And the only reason you'd get in that odorous Ark would be if you believed that judgment was coming. Today, as in the days of Noah, there are a few who believe that judgment is coming, and a great multitude who are "living for the weekend" - just like Jesus told us in Matthew 24. If I had a hammer, I'd hammer in the morning... for 120 years! Noah must have worn out his hammer building the Ark... then another one... then another one. All that pounding and all that "gopher wood" were a testimony to everyone around. There were other testimonies, too. But when water started falling from the sky - for the first time ever - people were confused. They "didn't know." Today we begin a study on the signs of the Lord's return. Have we just stuck Jesus onto our old lives? When we look at the Apostle Paul's life, we see purpose. We see a plan. And his plan didn't always turn out to be God's plan, so that's reassuring. What we don't see is a life of leisure, putting in his time, coasting to Heaven. He was "all in." We're looking at Romans, chapter 15, and taking stock of the world, and of Christianity then, versus now. And asking, "What happened?" Looking back, looking forward. While wrapping up his letter to the Christians in Rome, Paul introduces himself! Today his mini-résumé would be the "headline" of his "profile page." It looks to the past. And then the Apostle focuses on the future. What's on the horizon - and why is he so driven to accomplish his mission? For a few minutes, let's think about our lives in this same way. Where have we been, and where are we going? Who should be ministering what, to whom? Toward the end of his letter to the Romans Paul gives us some background on his assignment to the Gentiles. He wasn't sent out with rituals and sacraments, or even hidden knowledge. It was a mission to bring the gospel in a powerful way. There's so much here in Romans chapter 15 that can correct human errors about "the ministry." Got hope? Our world is in a freefall of despair. It would be depressing even to mention some of the tragedies we've seen recently - caused by empty philosophies and dark theologies. "Whatever is not from faith is sin." As we continue our discussion about living with others in mind, we'll come back to the last two verses of Romans, chapter 14. We can certainly scandalize another believer - put a stumbling block in his or her path - by flaunting our freedom. But we can also overstep our own conscience. It's a thoughtful, considerate kind of life that we're being invited to live. Here's Jim with Part 2 of, Living for Whose Pleasure? What if you had to put all your proposed actions up for a vote? Your choices will now be approved by the committee! Sitting on that board will be your conscience, your family (especially your children), and others who look up to you. And a few strangers. That's not very practical, you're right. But if you're thinking it would infringe on your freedoms, Pastor Jim has a few thoughts he'd like to share with you. The scoffer says, "There are too many hypocrites in the church!" His Christian friend answers, "No, there's room for one more." It may be true that the critic is looking for an excuse not to believe in Jesus, but his criticism hits closer to the mark than we would like. All God's children need principles! We've been studying Romans 14, and how we should handle legitimate differences of opinion on how we interface with the world. At this point we've left the land of laws and rigid rules. But does that mean we have no objective guideposts at all? What if we're both right? Some people like things to be tidy. We like a neat workspace, an orderly flow of traffic, and a theology with no loose ends. We want right to be right and wrong to be wrong, always and for everybody. Well, God seems to have left some ambiguities just to challenge people like us. It's the carnivores vs. the vegetarians! The early Christians in Rome had a problem. Some wanted to honor God by abstaining from meat and enjoying holy days; others wanted to honor God by doing the reverse. Some practical tips for the Heaven-bound traveler. The fact that we don't know when we'll be leaving makes our preparation more challenging! The only rational course is to be ready to go at any moment. We might go the usual way, or we could be "snatched up" in the Harpazo - the Rapture. You can pay your taxes, you can pay off your mortgage, but there's one debt that can never be settled. Fortunately, the inexhaustible debt to love others is a happy burden. Yes, it's very difficult sometimes, but the end result can be peaceful and pleasant. In the section of Romans 13 that we've been looking at, Paul charges his readers to love "one another," and then again, to love "your neighbor." So the circle widens. As Christians we are free! - but we have obligations. At some point in our journey toward adulthood we figure out that grownups have to pay bills. And those who don't pay what they owe will have a difficult time of it. It's the same on our road to Christian maturity. Along the way, we learn that we have debts. Jim will talk about what those are, in the opening segment of his sermon, Love's Truest Test. People working with the homeless in Taranaki say there are more and more people who need help and their needs are becoming more and more complex. Robin Martin reports.
"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." That simple scripture, Romans 12:21, is sparking some thought in us. How do we respond when someone injures our reputation, or our career - or our body? It takes some faith and imagination to believe that my "enemy" might one day be my brother or sister in Christ. One person has died in a house fire in New Plymouth on Wednesday night. Reporter Mary Argue spoke to Corin Dann.
If we could distill the entire Bible into one verse, which verse would you choose? Most people would say that John 3:16 is the message of God's Word in miniature: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." But Jim has a different choice! Today he'll defend his selection of Romans 12:21 as the unified message of the Bible. It's a verse that divides all of humanity! New Plymouth ratepayers are getting a cash-back of around $100 per household, after a rates blunder. New Plymouth mayor Neil Holdom spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
"Comeuppance" is a word we need to bring back! "Punishment" and "retribution" are good words. But there's just something satisfying about the villain finally getting his comeuppance! In Romans 12, Paul uses the word "Wrath." And today Jim will show that God's wrath is better than our wrath - for at least a couple of reasons. Here's Part 2 of his sermon, Stretch Your Credibility. When someone gives you hate, can you give them love... and say, "Keep the change?" It's unnatural to bless those who curse you. Or maybe "supernatural" is a better word. In those seemingly rare instances when it happens, the whole world notices. People are forced to come to grips with the fact that there's something else going on here, something more than meets the eye - something supernatural. Trouble? We eat trouble for breakfast! In Romans 12:12 we see three atmospheres, requiring three different attitudes from us. Trouble, or affliction, is just one of those atmospheres. No one likes difficulties, but they will come. The good news is that we can make our problems serve us. Jim will explain, and he'll walk us through the "Hope" and "Prayer" elements of this verse, as well. The thing about serving the Lord is, there are no days off! The difference between the sacred and the secular in the Christian's life is exactly zero. "Do all to the glory of God," Paul would write to the Corinthians. In his letter to the Romans, he talks about what that feels like from the inside. It feels like something bubbling over. Are we "fervent" - hot, boiling, heated by the flame of the Spirit? Here's the conclusion of Jim's sermon, Too Hot to Handle. Don't be a sloth! Romans 12, verse 11 gives us three directives (one "don't" and two "do's"). They have to do with our outer work ethic, our inner state of excitement in the Spirit, and the purpose of it all: to "serve the Lord." A Christian working with diligence will certainly stand out next to someone advocating a 4-day work week and free paid everything, serving only his own comfort. But maybe this message is Too Hot to Handle. That's Jim's sermon title. "Outdo one another in showing honor." Ah, it's a contest! Most translations render the last part of Romans 12:10 something like, "in honor giving preference to one another." But others read, "Set examples for each other in showing respect." There's an element of eagerness that Paul is asking for: Get to the front of the line in this matter of putting others first! Do I matter? We all want to know that we have significance, value, worth, even honor. Well, that value was proven at the Cross. We were ransomed with something far more valuable than gold, as Peter writes: with the "precious blood of Christ." But our value isn't of any use hidden under the mattress. This worth is exchanged within the family - by living the faith life with other redeemed ones. Here's Jim to open a sermon called, Living Respectfully. According to Joseph de Maistre, "Every country has the government it deserves." If the philosopher's point seems a little too sharp, how about the psalmist? "For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest upon the land of the righteous, so that the righteous will not put forth their hands to do wrong." We'll have to conclude that both good and bad rulers are instruments for God's purposes. We're looking at the first 7 verses of Romans 13 as we round out Jim's sermon, Respecting the Higher Powers. Don't be conformed to the culture, but comply with Congress? What? Romans, chapter 13 gives us the clearest instruction anywhere in Scripture of how Christians should relate to civil government. But let's not tear it out of its context. All that the Apostle has written in chapter 12 about being transformed, and our living sacrifice, is still in play. The key to understanding this is the idea of delegated authority. Here's Jim on Respecting the Higher Powers. "Communion" celebrates our common union. As we're thinking about the brotherhood and sisterhood of believers, let's not forget that we have a living picture of that in the Lord's Supper! Every time we celebrate this memorial meal, we can see God's love working not just in the vertical dimension - but horizontally, among our siblings in the family of the redeemed. "Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another...." In Romans, Paul offers us grand theology, as well as some "Do's and Don'ts" of getting along with others: "...distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality." He writes, "Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Agree toward one another." Today Pastor Jim begins a sermon called, Behaving Like Brethren. Love, and right. When fake Christians parrot the words, "God is love," they mean, "God is love and does not judge." But the Bible explains, "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth." That's in Paul's famous "love chapter," 1 Corinthians 13. So real love - "true love," as we've been discussing - not only distinguishes good from evil; it aligns itself with righteousness. We can't love without giving, but we can give without loving. Love gives. It doesn't have to be prodded, it doesn't overthink things, it doesn't care how the gift might look to others - love just gives. God so loved, that He gave. That stands in contrast, a lot of times, to our giving. That's what we noticed yesterday from Romans 12. Today Jim will tell us all 4 obstacles to genuine love. "The Academy award goes to....!" In our study of Romans 12 we've noticed that God distributes gifts to those in His family, to build each other up. But it's possible to employ those gifts in a kind of hollow performance. Are we just acting? Or are we being driven by love? And why is it so hard to take off the mask? What are we afraid will happen if people see the real Me? Jim will share some insights into that. Here's the opening to his sermon, True Love.
