Have you ever had a discussion that baffled both of you? In John 3, Nicodemus wasn't tracking at all with what Christ was saying about going through the birth process a second time - or something. In part two, small businesses say the closure of GrabOne will be a huge hit. Then, who doesn't like a good rock? Thousands of collectors will be descending on New Plymouth this weekend for the Rock, Mineral and Crystal show.  

The Lord's Supper is a picture. And we need a bigger frame. The Corinthians had distorted the living image that Jesus gave us in the Upper Room. We have cropped out part of that picture. And others have painted over it as they wished, and hung it upside-down. But the picture can be restored - if we'll refer back to the original, as revealed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 11. Lucia is from Argentina and moved to New Zealand in 2018 searching for a new life adventure. She first arrived in Christchurch, where she already knew someone. In 2020, she moved up to New Plymouth because she got a job there, and as soon as she arrived, she met Kyle, her partner. She is originally an Architect Designer and a Project Manager, and that is what she had been doing for work until she had her son. Since having her son Koa, who is almost 2 years old, she has been staying home with him. Raising him and seeing him grow is their main priority these days. Lucia has also started a little project where she shares her experiences, learnings, and reflections on motherhood. She writes on Substack and briefly shares these writings on an Instagram page called Creciendo con Luli (Growing with Luli). In addition, Lucia and her partner run a design and screenprinting studio where they have been collaborating with like-minded businesses, creating fun and special designs for each of them. When she says “they,” it is actually Kyle who is the artist and Lucia who helps out with coordination and paperwork!

Science, and con-science. There is knowledge (science), and then there's something called "with-knowledge." That's what "conscience" means: the deeper awareness that must go along with our book learning; the knowledge that divides right from wrong. The Christians in Corinth were impressed with their big brains and all that was in them, but had forgotten how to use their hearts. Family members of a Taranaki man killed by a coward punch have expressed their horror that his killer filmed his victim and taunted him as he lay dying on the ground. Daytona Thompson appeared for sentencing for the manslaughter of Daniel Nganeko at the High Court in New Plymouth. Our Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin was in court

We need to talk about why we're persisting with having so many local body politicians. We clearly have too many positions, don't we? I mean, just look at how many people are winning their seats at the moment. The elections are this weekend - look at how many people are winning their seats without any elections, without anybody standing against them. With more than 200, that's 1 in every 7 council races. So Hurunui already has its mayor, even though the elections are this weekend. It's Marie Black, no one's standing against her. Manawatū already has its mayor, Michael Ford, no one's standing against him. There are more than 80 councillors who are already elected across the country, there are several on the Southland Regional Council already elected. Lower Hutt, Southland, Buller, Stratford, Marlborough councils, two of Auckland's councils already elected - unopposed - as well as 3 of Christchurch's. There are also empty seats that no one wants to fill in community boards in the Rotorua Lakes, New Plymouth's Kaitake, Clifton as well, rural Hastings, Hanmer Springs, Twizel, and Mataura. What that tells you is that you have more positions to fill than you have people who want to fill those positions. Now, please have a look at your voting papers and vote if you can. I voted in Auckland already, right? I had 1 vote for mayor, I had 1 vote for council, and then I had up to 7 votes for my local board. I didn't vote 7 times for my local, I didn't know who all of those people were. I knew about 5 of them and at least 2 of them I knew for bad reasons, so I didn't want to vote for them. So, you know, I think we clearly are asking too much. And by the way, in Auckland, we have 172 local board politicians by the end of this process, and I'm not even counting the local licensing board. The most junior of which, the ward councillors, get paid more than $54,000 each. Now, I think looking at all of this, we are well overdue tipping all of this up and changing it and massively reducing the number of people that we're paying to do probably not a lot. Christianity's highest value is not tolerance! Tolerance has become a kind of religion unto itself - and a very popular one. Those who refuse to bow to the god of Tolerance will not be tolerated! Falling into factions, versus following a father. A "party spirit" isn't actually as fun as it sounds. Paul once gave us a list of "deeds of the flesh," including "hatreds, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions," and the one we'll look at today: "factions." Real philosophers love Jesus. Once you've said that "all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden" in Christ, that's it. There's no wisdom left for pretenders like Plato, Descartes, Nietzsche. It's all in Jesus. And it's "hidden." Tongue-tangled. The Corinthian church had become disordered. Not just their church "services," as we would call them, but the church itself was in danger of losing its unity. And all because they had become enamored of certain gifts. Paul sets them straight about the proper hierarchy of spiritual gifts, but then he writes, "Now I'll show you a more excellent way." A bumper crowd turned up at the Theatre Royal in New Plymouth last night for an at times spirited and often humorous mayoral debate. Reporter Robin Martin has more.

Love constrains. Since the Sixties at least, "love" has been used to excuse all kinds of harmful behavior. "Free love" was a popular cliché then. "Love is love" something you might hear today. But real love lives in harmony with the Law of God. And it restricts our choices to those that actually help other people. "Pursue love!" But how? "And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." When Paul wrote that, he didn't know that someone would come along later and put a chapter break there! What we call the "love chapter" is really part of a larger discussion about gifts, self control, order in the church... and love. It all started because the Corinthians had valued their gifts above the purpose of the gifts. God will break the standing laws of the universe, before He will break a promise to you! Father Abraham had heard God give a promise. Then he heard God tell him to kill that promise. Does the Bible give us some "early warning signs" of the Antichrist? The Antichrist can't rise up whenever he wants to. Something or someone restrains the Man of Lawlessness, until that Restrainer is taken out of the way. This was all basic stuff to the Thessalonians. Jesus returns with the church, not for the church! We've been trying to think more clearly about what will happen at the close of the age, the end of Gentile rule of the Earth. Christian scholars come up with different solutions for how to fit the scriptures together, but some solutions work better than others.
