This week we're in the book of Zechariah. Michael preached three separate messages across the Sunday and in the 9.15am service focussed on Zechariah's vision of a future kingdom and the coming king.
If you were to imagine an ancient king entering his capital city, you would likely picture a man sitting atop a powerful warhorse. You might see behind him a gleaming parade of chariots and a conquering army marching in formation. The king displays overwhelming strength and portrays an image that demands submission. This is how the world understands power. But the prophet Zechariah paints a radically different picture. He describes a righteous and holy King, one who is bringing rescue and salvation, riding into Jerusalem. Yet he does not ride on a warhorse, instead he arrives as one humbled—afflicted—riding on a donkey. What kind of kingdom is this? This prophecy cuts against every human expectation of power and glory. The Rev. Jacob Hercamp, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Noblesville, IN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Zechariah 9. To learn more about Christ Lutheran, visit clc-in.org. The Persian king Cyrus issues an astonishing decree: the exiles may go home. Among them are the Jews—God's chosen people—whom this pagan ruler not only repatriates, but commands to rebuild the temple of the Lord. Ezra 1–4 tells of their return, the joy of restored worship, and the crushing opposition that brings construction to a standstill. Then the prophets Haggai and Zechariah speak with God's authority, calling His people to courage, repentance, and hope. In Ezra 5–8 the temple is completed, worship flourishes, and hearts are renewed in God's Word. This series on Thy Strong Word follows the events in the order they happened, revealing how the Lord moves kings and prophets, overcomes opposition, and restores His people. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. - Zechariah 9:9
This Sunday, co-lead pastor Alex Leyva continued our series in Zechariah with a message from chapters 9–11, reminding us of God's faithfulness to His word. In chapter 9, we see that God promised to judge the proud—and He did. He stands against what is evil and calls us to worship Him alone as our true King. But God also promised to send His King—and He did. Jesus entered not with force, but in humility, riding on a donkey, pouring out His blood to set us free. And God has promised to restore His people—and He will. Chapter 10 points us to a God who does the work of restoration, shaping His people by truth, not falsehood. May we be a people who put away what is empty and cling to the only One who satisfies.

In this passage Zechariah captures the mind as he foretells of the coming King and the extent of His glory and reign.
Zechariah 9 | Greg Opean The book of Zechariah is rich with prophecy, history, and God's faithfulness. In chapter 9, we see how God used world leaders—like Alexander the Great—to fulfill His divine plan, just as He had prophesied 200 years in advance. This passage also foreshadows the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey to bring salvation. Through this chapter, we witness God's sovereignty over world leaders and history, the prophetic accuracy of Scripture, and the unfolding of Jesus' first and second coming. It also serves as a powerful encouragement to trust in God's plan, knowing that even when the world seems out of control, He is at work. https://www.maynardvillefellowship.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Carr-2-23-25.mp3 God didn't just keep his promise to judge the enemies of Israel after they returned from exile, but he told them exactly how he would do it. Not only does this passage show how God would judge his enemies, but it also demonstrates his attributes that his people should follow.

Zechariah prophesies that judgment is coming for Zion's enemies, but in a surprising reversal after their punishment, God will call them to be a part of his people as a remnant. Later, Zion is called to rejoice, for their king is coming. He is described as being victorious, righteous and humble all at once, even riding a donkey instead of a mule as was customary for kings. The Lord promises to restore his people and defend them from their enemies. Finally, Zechariah takes on the role of a shepherd of those sheep who were raised for purpose of being slaughtered as a symbolic parallel, for the shepherds had not cared for them; they only used them for personal gain.Zechariah 9 - 1:09 .
