Are you ready for the rain? There was only one way to be ready for the Flood, and that was to get in the Ark. Practicing your swimming "just in case" wasn't going to save anyone. It was the Ark, or death. And the only reason you'd get in that odorous Ark would be if you believed that judgment was coming. Today, as in the days of Noah, there are a few who believe that judgment is coming, and a great multitude who are "living for the weekend" - just like Jesus told us in Matthew 24. Have we just stuck Jesus onto our old lives? When we look at the Apostle Paul's life, we see purpose. We see a plan. And his plan didn't always turn out to be God's plan, so that's reassuring. What we don't see is a life of leisure, putting in his time, coasting to Heaven. He was "all in." We're looking at Romans, chapter 15, and taking stock of the world, and of Christianity then, versus now. And asking, "What happened?" (Laramie, WY) - Monday was Media Day at the University of Wyoming as various members of the region's radio, tv, print and digital outlets chatted with athletes and coaches. It's not often that the wide receiver coach gets a lot of attention at the event, but 2025 was different with the return of an all-time Cowboy great, Jovon Bouknight. Jovon played for the Cowboys from 2002-2005 and racked up over 3,600 receiving yards, placing him as the third best UW receiver in the category (behind only Marcus Harris and Ryan Yarborough.) After graduating, the Denver native began the shift from receiver to mentor. He's spent time coaching at Marshall, Kentucky, Oregon, Texas Tech and Utah State before returning to Laramie. “It is a full circle moment as it all started here at the University of Wyoming,” Bouknight told reporters when he first returned. “It is great to be back in the saddle with familiar faces with our student-athletes and coaches that have so much love and passion for this program. I'm ready to hit the ground running and go back to the foundation and fundamentals.” Coach Bouknight told County 10 at Media Day about some of his favorite memories as a UW athlete, "obviously the Vegas Bowl (2004) sticks out. I was only fortunate to win one Border War, so I think about that one from my sophomore year." Jovon said it's helpful to remember his playing days to instruct this 2025 group of Cowboy receivers, especially when it comes to the eventual cold weather. "It makes us unique, the mental aspect and being mentally tough about it. Understanding that it can play into your favor in late November if you're prepared for it." And the Pokes newest coach says while there's still some improvement he'd like to see before the August 28th opener at Akron, he's thrilled with the wide receiver room so far. "It's been going good. I think the energy is really high, guys are flying around. A couple guys that are new are working some kinks out. For the most part we're doing really well. It's the carnivores vs. the vegetarians! The early Christians in Rome had a problem. Some wanted to honor God by abstaining from meat and enjoying holy days; others wanted to honor God by doing the reverse. Apparently there wasn't a king-like human authority in the church... in Rome... who could decide the matter for them. To this day similar disagreements continue to give Christians reasons to either judge each other, or accept our differences. You can pay your taxes, you can pay off your mortgage, but there's one debt that can never be settled. Fortunately, the inexhaustible debt to love others is a happy burden. Yes, it's very difficult sometimes, but the end result can be peaceful and pleasant. The thing about serving the Lord is, there are no days off! The difference between the sacred and the secular in the Christian's life is exactly zero. Don't be a sloth! Romans 12, verse 11 gives us three directives (one "don't" and two "do's"). They have to do with our outer work ethic, our inner state of excitement in the Spirit, and the purpose of it all: to "serve the Lord." A Christian working with diligence will certainly stand out next to someone advocating a 4-day work week and free paid everything, serving only his own comfort. Do I matter? We all want to know that we have significance, value, worth, even honor. Well, that value was proven at the Cross. We were ransomed with something far more valuable than gold, as Peter writes: with the "precious blood of Christ." But our value isn't of any use hidden under the mattress. According to Joseph de Maistre, "Every country has the government it deserves." If the philosopher's point seems a little too sharp, how about the psalmist? Don't be conformed to the culture, but comply with Congress? What? Romans, chapter 13 gives us the clearest instruction anywhere in Scripture of how Christians should relate to civil government. Love, and right. When fake Christians parrot the words, "God is love," they mean, "God is love and does not judge." But the Bible explains, "Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth." That's in Paul's famous "love chapter," 1 Corinthians 13. We can't love without giving, but we can give without loving. Love gives. What if God were to give you a gift wrapped in brown paper? We're not just adopted into the divine family; we've been given a gift for blessing others. Where do we worship God? Everywhere! To present our bodies as a living sacrifice is our "reasonable" act of worship, Paul writes. That Greek word denotes something "pertaining to the mind and soul." More than just physical service: we're offering every part of ourselves - spirit, soul and body. And that happens everywhere! One more word that we need to know for today's study, is "publican."
