Philippians 4:9:"Those things, which ye have both learned, andreceived, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be withyou."   Noticethe little command near the end of the verse: "Do." One simple word.Christianity was never intended to be merely something we know. It is somethingwe live. James reminds us of this in James 1:22, "But be you doers ofthe word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."  Knowledge without obedience only producesdeception. The goal of Bible study is never simply information. It istransformation. Paulreminds the Philippians of four ways they had received God's truth. First, theyhad learned it. That speaks of careful instruction. For several years Paul hadtaught these believers the Word of God. Second, they had received it. Thatmeans they welcomed it and accepted it as God's truth. Hearing truth is onething. Receiving truth is another. Third, they had heard it. Again and againthey listened as Paul preached Christ. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing bythe Word of God. Butthen Paul adds something remarkable. They had seen it in him. Paul wasn'tasking them to imitate a perfect man. He was asking them to follow a faithfulexample. He had already written in chapter 3:17, "Brethren, befollowers together of me." Not because Paul was perfect. In fact, hehad just admitted in chapter 3 that he had not already attained. But he wassincerely following Christ. Someonehas wisely said, "People may doubt what you say, but they usually believewhat you do." Augustine said, “Preach the Gospel, preach the Gospel, andif necessary use words”. Our lives either reinforce our message or contradictit. Paul could boldly say, "You've heard me preach it, and you've watchedme live it."Whata challenge for every Christian. Our children are watching us. Ourgrandchildren are watching us. Our neighbors are watching us. The people wework beside are watching us. Our lives become living sermons every single day. Paulthen gives this simple command: "Do." Put it into practice. Practicewhat you have learned. Practice what you believe. Practice what God has shownyou. Someone once said that the distance between heaven and earth is only abouteighteen inches—the distance from the head to the heart. But I might add thereis another distance—from the heart to the hands and feet. God wants His truthto move from our minds, to our hearts, and finally into our daily lives. TheChristian life is learned one step of obedience at a time. Thennotice the wonderful promise. Paul does not simply say that the peace of Godwill guard you. He now says, "The God of peace shall be with you."Back in verse 7, Paul promised the peace of God. Now he promises thepresence of the God of peace. What could be better than that? When we walk injoyful obedience, we enjoy the fellowship of God's presence in a very real way.The greatest blessing of obedience is not merely answered prayer, or even innerpeace. The greatest blessing is that we experience the nearness of God Himself.Jesus said in John 14:21, "He that has my commandments, and keeps them,he it is that loves me... and I will love him, and will manifest myself tohim." May each of us not merely know God's Word. May we live God'sWord. Asthe old hymn reminds us, "Trust and obey, for there's no other way to behappy in Jesus, but to trust and obey."Let'spray.  Heavenly Father, thank You forgiving us Your precious Word. Help us not to be hearers only, but doers of YourWord. May the truths we learn each day shape the way we live, the way we speak, and the way we love others. Help us to be examples of faithful followers ofChrist so that others will see Jesus in us. Thank You for the wonderful promisethat as we walk in obedience, the God of peace will be with us. May we enjoyYour presence every day of our lives. We ask this in the precious name of Jesus.Amen.

There are two stories here, their opposition is part of a theme.  Erasmus, the great Erasmus , Erasmus of Rotterdam was even more a product of the Devotio Moderna than was Luther.  Most of his young education was by the Brethren of the Common Life or their imitators.I am Groote.Last episode I called him a Satirist.  Of course he was much more than that.  You've heard of him, but are unlikely to have read any of his full length works, unless you are a specialist in the time. And yet he had great influence of his period, being perhaps the highest status intellectual of the period.   He was the writer of 1 in 3 books purchased during the 1530s.  And as he wrote Suleiman the Magnificent was first overcoming Hungary and then moved on to the Siege of Vienna.Erasmus wrote In Praise of Folly, which we discuss in the episode, while folly is being acted out in Hungary, to a tragic end.Hungary was well able to defend the West from the Ottoman during the days of Matthias Corvinus.  But on his death, short sighted magnates pursued a foolish policy, leading to their defeat.  After an absolutely heroic defense of Vienna, Suleiman was defeated, losing 20,000 men in the retreat.   Oddly enough, this is about the same number of boys and girls taken as slaves by the Ottomans on this campaign.  You want your civilization to be so powerful you do not have to suffer slavers.

The 250th Anniversary of American independence has been marked mostly by people trying to sell me merchandise! (Which is very American, when you think about it.) Beings act according to their nature. Even God. So what is the nature of the Divine Being, and how can we align our natures with His? Jim has chosen to begin a study on The Attributes of God with a look into the doctrine of the Trinity. Who is God... really? "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent." The Pharisees thought they knew God. The New Agers think they recognize God in themselves. The imagination of mankind has spun out idols uncountable. Well, who is the true God? And how can we know Him? Sola Gratia didn't come from Martin Luther; it came from the event we'll read about today. "...it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved...." That's Peter. "Saint" Peter, if you like. The cry, "By Grace Alone" didn't start in the 1500s, but in Acts 15, very early in the life of the church. Here's Jim to complete his talk, By Grace - Not by Law. Psalm 139 displays our interaction through prayer and the necessity of the dark time for the Christian life. David shows us how to struggle with the nature of the Almighty, the wonderful, uplifting results of drawing close to the God of the universe, and the Savior, the cornerstone rejected,, and His comforts to our hearts, minds, and souls.Contemplating the nature of God and our distresses in the dark times, when we bring them to God, lifts our souls. “O Lord, Thou hast searched me and known me. 2 Thou dost know when I sit down and when I rise up; Thou dost understand my thought from afar. 3 Thou dost scrutinize my path and my lying down, And art intimately acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all. 5 Thou hast enclosed me behind and before, And laid Thy hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it.” Calm 139:1-6“Where can I go from Thy Spirit? Or where can I flee from Thy presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, Thou art there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, Thou art there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 Even there Thy hand will lead me, And Thy right hand will lay hold of me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” 12 Even the darkness is not dark to Thee, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to Thee. 13 For Thou didst form my inward parts; Thou didst weave me in my mother's womb. 14 I will give thanks to Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Thy works, And my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:7-14“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.” Psalm 139:23-24Our So What?Throw yourself on the stone who knows rejection and darkness; He is the one who said: “My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?”Being broken on the Stone at the foot of the cross is the most precious place in the universe; seek Him, seek Him in sincere community, listening and speaking to the Stone of our salvation. Philippians 4:2-3 - "Standing Together in Unity"

Welcometo Pastor's Chat. Yesterday we heard Paul's loving appeal: "Stand fastin the Lord." Today Paul shows us one of the greatest ways we standfirm as believers—by maintaining unity with one another.Listento his words in Philippians 4:2-3: "I beseech Euodias, and beseechSyntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, withClement also, and with other my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book oflife." Atfirst glance, these verses may seem like a brief personal note tucked away inPaul's letter. But the Holy Spirit preserved them for a reason. Even in one ofthe healthiest churches in the New Testament, there were misunderstandingsbetween believers. Paul names two faithful women—Euodias and Syntyche. We arenot told what their disagreement was, and I believe there is wisdom in that. The issue itself was not nearly as important as the need for reconciliation. Noticesomething else. Paul does not take sides. He doesn't say one woman was rightand the other was wrong. Instead, he lovingly urges both of them, "Beof the same mind in the Lord." That phrase should sound familiar.Throughout Philippians, Paul has emphasized unity that grows out of humility. In chapter 2 he wrote, "Let nothing be done through strife orvainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better thanthemselves." Then he pointed us to the greatest example of unity andhumility—the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Thesolution to most conflicts among believers is not that one person wins and theother loses. The solution is that both become more like Christ. When our eyesare fixed on Him, many of the things that divide us begin to lose theirimportance. Paul then asks a "true yokefellow" (a truecompanion) to help these women. A yoke joins two oxen together so they can pullthe same load. Paul calls upon a trusted believer to come alongside them andhelp restore fellowship. Thereis a wonderful lesson here. Sometimes mature Christians can help bring healingwhere relationships have become strained. Galatians 6:1 reminds us, "Brethren,if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an onein the spirit of meekness." Notice also how Paul speaks of thesewomen. He says they "labored with me in the gospel." Thesewere not troublemakers. They were faithful servants. They had worked besidePaul in sharing the Gospel. Isn't it encouraging to know that even faithfulChristians can sometimes disagree? Remember Paul and Barnabas in Acts 15. Thechurch has never been made up of perfect people. It has always been made up offorgiven people who are learning to walk together in the grace of God. Paulalso mentions Clement and "other my fellow laborers, whose names are inthe book of life." What a beautiful reminder! Our names are written inthe same book. We are all members of the same family. We are serving the sameSavior. We are going to spend eternity together. That ought to encourage us toseek peace with one another now. Thedevil delights in division. Christ delights in unity. Psalm 133 begins, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Myfriend, is there someone with whom you need to be reconciled? Is there amisunderstanding that needs to be settled? Is there forgiveness that needs tobe extended? Don't let small disagreements become large divisions.  RememberPaul's appeal: "Be of the same mind in the Lord." When wehumble ourselves before Christ, love one another, and keep the Gospel first,God strengthens His church, and the world sees the reality of His love.

Somebody left the back door to the church unlocked, and the Gentiles are sneaking in! OK, alright; God has chosen people from pagan nations to become Christians, too. We'll get used to that. Eventually. But they'll have to come through the front door - the Mosaic Law! So said the legalists. We American Christians have forgotten something important about our faith - namely, it's about a life WITH God rather than all the things we're doing FOR God. Our focus on endless activity is no accident. In the late 1800s, American Christians shifted heavily toward action, perfectly captured by preacher Charles Spurgeon’s famous plea: “Brethren, do something; do something; do something.” For over a century, this mindset has defined the movement by its programs and busyness. But the earliest disciples were marked as different - simply because they had been WITH Jesus.

1 John is a letter written so that believers might know with certainty they have eternal life (1 John 5:13). John offers clear evidence for us to examine our lives and confirm our salvation, while also revealing the false teaching of those who had left the church claiming to be the true Christians. Faced with these false teachers, John repeatedly applies three basic tests—doctrine, obedience, and love—to help us discern genuine faith. 1 John 2:7-11 focuses on the test of love for one another as the heart of the matter. John shows that love is both an old commandment rooted in God's law and a new commandment fulfilled in Christ's sacrificial example. Love is not merely something we try to do better, but a gospel reality already at work in every true believer (v. 8b-9), serving as clear evidence we are abiding in God's light rather than walking in darkness. In verses 7-8, we see that love is both a command and a gospel reality. In verses 9-11, John explains that this love for the brethren is evidence that we abide in the light. John's tests call us to honest self-examination—not to measure how perfectly we love, but to ask whether God has placed within us a genuine longing to love His people as Christ has loved us. If we are cold or indifferent to Jesus' bride, the solution is not self-effort but turning afresh to Jesus in repentance and faith. More effort cannot fix a lack of love. Only the one who causes the darkness to pass away and the true light to shine in our hearts can do that. I. Love Is Both A Command & A Gospel Reality (v. 7-8) II. Love Is Evidence We Abide In The Light (v. 9-11)

When we come to Acts 13, there's a shift in the story. Really, it's hard to keep our footing in the book of Acts, so much is happening - including things that have never happened before! But when the gospel made it to Antioch it established a beachhead, and launched out. Here was a church made up of both Jews and Gentiles; a fellowship that prayed; that heard from God; a church that cared. Today we'll hear the first half of Pastor Jim's sermon, Serving in the Zone.
