There's something powerful about final words. Whether from a coach, a teacher, a parent, or a friend, words can leave a mark. They shape how we see ourselves and how we move through the world. Some become so deeply embedded that we carry them for decades, and even pass them down to the next generation. As David nears the end of his life, he leaves with final words that would change the entire trajectory of Solomon's reign.

You may be familiar with this verse from James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” God wants us to be wise, and the good news is, he will grant wisdom to us as we recognize our need for it and go to the source of all wisdom, our God. We also know from Scripture the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. We want the wisdom that God imparts, not the world's fake substitute. So, this is the pre-requisite: Do you fear the Lord? Do you know and respect the one true God through a personal relationship with his Son, Jesus?  That's where God's eternal wisdom begins. Assuming you do, here are the questions you need to ask yourself often. I believe these questions will help you avoid lots of trouble, keep you from shooting yourself in the foot, as we say, and greatly increase your effectiveness, regardless of where you are or what you're doing. Question #1: Do you think before you speak? How many times have you said something—jumped quickly to give your opinion or your advice or add your two cents—and as soon as you said it, you wished the ground would just swallow you whole? Proverbs 29:20 puts it so well: “Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.” I've often said, “I may not be good but I'm fast,” as though it is a good thing to be fast. Well, maybe it is sometimes, but to speak in haste is almost always a bad idea. Note there can be a difference between doing something with haste and doing something in haste. There are times when we do need to act with haste, quickly, for good reasons. David prays in Psalm 70:1, “Hasten, O God, to save me; come quickly, Lord, to help me.” We often pray for God to act quickly, right? And then later in Psalm 119:60, the Psalmist says, “I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.” That's the kind of haste we all need. There's no question we should hasten to obey the Lord with no delay. But speaking in haste is speaking without giving it proper thought; speaking without thinking of how it could be perceived by someone else. It is speaking foolishly. The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing (Proverbs 12:18). When you choose your words carefully, thoughtfully, not in haste, you can do so much good. Proverbs 18:21 says: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” So, if you want to be wise, ask yourself, “Do I speak words of life or death? Do I think before I speak?” Question #2: Did you sleep on it? The simple old adage, Sleep on it, can save you lots of trouble. A wise person takes time for decisions, big and small ones, because the choices and decisions we make on a daily basis set the direction of our lives. Think about decisions that you regret. I can easily bring some recent ones to my own mind, and when I look back on decisions that didn't turn out so good, it was always because I simply didn't “sleep on it,” didn't pray enough about it, didn't always seek good counsel. Again, from Proverbs 15:22, we read: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” Wise people seek counsel from those they trust. Wise people are able to live with delayed gratification, resisting the impulse to go for the immediate reward, the instant answer. How often do you tell yourself just to sleep on it, talk to somebody you trust, pray lots? I love this verse from Jeremiah 6:16a: “This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” When you're at a decision point, especially a fairly significant one, stand at that crossroad, ask for God's path, the good way. That's how you make wise decisions that bring soul rest for you. Question #3: Have you heard both sides? No doubt you've watched some courtroom drama, whether real or in a movie, where the defendant seems totally guilty until the defense gets the chance to present the other side. And what seemed so right before now seems totally wrong. Proverbs 18:17 talks about that: “In a lawsuit the first to speak seems right, until someone comes forward and cross-examines.” When someone is telling you their side of some story, before you take sides, before you get into gear to take some action, before you affirm that person, find out the other side. Do your own cross-examination and make sure you have the whole truth and nothing but the truth! There's a story in 2 Samuel chapter nine about King David who was on the run because of his son Absalom’s rebellion. A man named Ziba approached him; he was the servant of Mephibosheth, who was a crippled man who truly loved King David. But Ziba told David that Mephibosheth stayed behind in Jerusalem to reclaim his grandfather Saul’s kingdom—in other words, to take David's place—which was a lie. But David believed him and gave Ziba all of Mephibosheth's possessions. When David and his men finally returned to Jerusalem, Mephibosheth came to meet the king. Then David learned that Mephibosheth stayed in Jerusalem because Ziba, his servant, refused to saddle his donkey which prevented him from going with the king, because he was crippled and couldn't saddle it himself. So, when David discovered the other side of the story, he tried to correct his mistake, but there wasn't much he could do. Just think of the harm that is so often done because someone acted before they knew the whole story.  A wise person asks, “Have I heard both sides?” Question #4: Are you reacting or responding? A reaction is usually very emotional and often is full of feelings of revenge or defensiveness. Someone hurts your feelings and you react by trying to hurt them in some way. Someone treats you unfairly and in anger you ventilate your feelings about that person or even to that person. Those are reactions. A response is a delayed reaction, where you wait until your emotions are under control. Let me give you an example of reacting versus responding. Suppose you have a co-worker and every time she opens her mouth, it seems that bad news comes out. This person never has anything nice to say about anyone or anything, and all day long you are forced to listen to her negative chatter. What does that person do to you? If you’re in react mode, this person makes you angry, irritated, and frustrated. Having to listen to all that negative talk starts to make you think and talk negatively. That’s a reaction. It’s your automatic involuntary behavior, which is caused by that external stimuli—a negative co-worker. However, you can decide to respond instead of react. A response might be a smile when she says something negative to you. Or you may say something positive in response to her negative words. That positive response will help to keep you from being irritated and frustrated, and it will offset her negative input by your positive one, which will keep you from getting negative like your co-worker. Another response to this negative co-worker might be that you simply remove yourself from her company when you can, to avoid being exposed to her negativity. Or perhaps just develop a technique of quietly changing the subject! Now, you can see a response takes some self-control and discipline on your part. First, you have to be aware of the fact you have a tendency to react poorly in this circumstance, and then you must have an alternate strategy to tell you how to respond, so that you aren’t reacting. Question #5: Are you judging a book by its cover? We all have a tendency to do this. Someone dresses very differently from the way you dress, someone has tattoos all over their body, someone has a different political view from yours—there are just so many ways that we form hard and fast opinions and ideas about people or about a situation just by the way they look—by what you see on the outside. How many people in your life are dear friends, and yet they look very different from you? They have different backgrounds, different life experiences, come from different cultures, and yet they are dear people you know and love. If you judged them by their “cover,” you might never have become good friends. I think of a person in my church, Miss Shirley, who is now with Jesus, who made it her job to stand at the front door every Sunday and welcome everyone. It was her purpose to find a stranger and make that stranger feel welcome. When I first met Miss Shirley, I wanted to take her to a hair stylist and buy her some new clothes. She did not look like she should be welcoming people at the front door! I judged her by her cover, but I came to know her as one of the most effective people in our church. She was loved by so many, and she welcomed so many people into our church who might otherwise never have connected with us. I wish we had a hundred Miss Shirleys. God used her simple appearance to break down barriers, and she was a powerhouse for the Lord. So here are the five questions a wise person will ask herself often: Do I think before I speak? Did I sleep on it? Have I heard both sides? Am I reacting or responding? Am I judging a book by its cover? Proverbs 3:13 says: “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding.” No matter who you are, how young or how old, you can find wisdom and you will be blessed. I believe these five questions will help you.

This was in addition to my career as an author, and I wanted to help fellow authors get their work into the hands of audiences. However, I had no clue how to get started. One day, I was talking with my husband on a long drive. He asked me what I would do with my life if I weren't an author. Immediately, I blurted out, “I want to be a literary agent.” After I realized the weight of what I had said, we talked it through. He asked me to speak with my agent regarding the steps in that regard. I had a conversation with my agent, and in a few short months, he had signed me to his agency. Although I was excited about this new venture, I was still unsure whether I was qualified or even had the business sense to do the task. Although there were no books or manuals on how to become a literary agent, I knew that if I listened to the Holy Spirit, He would guide me step by step. I have now been with the agency for eight years. Of the 130 books sold, almost 1/4 are my deals. It is shocking to think that I have made that many deals in the eight short years that I've worked for him. Yet when God has nudged me, and I have used my gift of discernment and wisdom to sign a client or shop around their deals, God has placed their work in the right hands at the right time. The prideful side of me can boast that I did all that on my own. But the humble (or rational) side of me understands that unless the Holy Spirit was guiding my steps, I never could have done any of that on my own. God was good and allowed me to use my gifts and my heart to help others receive the gospel message through different genres of books and get them into the hands of readers. People are being blessed because of my diligence in working with publishers and getting authors the right deals at the right time. As humans, we have many plans and desires. While there's nothing wrong with having goals and visions for our lives, we need to make sure those desires and dreams align with God's will. Although it is not entirely possible to know whether our desires are our own or from the Lord, it is essential to follow God's guidance step by step. Is there an area of your life that you feel you want to take the next step, but don't know how? Do you question whether this desire God has placed on your heart is from God or from yourself? The best way to know whether this is from God is to pray about it. Additionally, we need to surround ourselves with godly people who have been through life and are willing not only to pray for us and our triumphs but also to challenge us when we're down. If we're making a bad decision, we need to surround ourselves with people we can test these words on and know whether they're from God or from us. A person who goes about making decisions without carefully weighing them, with those they trust, or who would have a warning from a loved one, will only make matters worse. With God, the decision they make is not irreversible. Still, it could pose a significant danger to their future if they make haphazard decisions without first allowing the Holy Spirit to guide their steps. Father, let us be people who listen to you. Let us allow you to orient our steps. Let us take each day as an opportunity to take a baby step in faith toward what you are calling us to. Let us be people who listen to others and keep our word, so we can make all the decisions for you. Amen. Today we'll continue Lloyd's verse by verse study through the Proverbs. These words of wisdom, penned by King Solomon, provide us with a plethora of practical insights on how to do the most important thing we can do on this earth - please God! Turn to Proverbs chapter Twenty-two.

Sometimes I wonder if “wise livelihood” is possible in the law. Can we support ourselves and our organizations and not deal in intoxicants, poisons, weapons, or humans…given the many nuanced interpretations of those words? Including the ways we might, from some perspective we can't quite see, inadvertently be dealing in one of those ways? And can we ever completely do no harm, in our adversary system? In our divided country? Our impacted world? Maybe. And then I wonder, what if no one does that perfectly, but everyone stays committed? That alone feels like a huge deal. A win. One that could, maybe, turn the tide. And if it doesn't, then at least at the end we'll be able to say, “I pointed my work; pointed my heart and mind, towards wisdom.” Which is, by itself, a great thing. Happy Lunar New Year. Many homeowners assume that once they live in the property for two out of five years, they qualify for the full capital gains exclusion when they sell. However, tax law does not always work that way. In this episode of Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, Tessa speaks with BWFA Senior Tax & Planning Advisor Larry Post about how the rules changed in 2008 and why converting a vacation home into a primary residence can create unexpected tax consequences. The key issue involves how the IRS allocates gain between qualified and non-qualified use. Time spent using the property as a vacation home after January 1, 2009 is treated differently than time used as a primary residence. The conversation walks through how gains must first be divided based on use before applying the $250,000 or $500,000 exclusion. In many cases, part of the gain remains taxable even if the homeowner meets the two-year residency rule. Larry also explains why this issue becomes more complicated when rental property is involved. Converting a rental to a primary residence can trigger depreciation recapture and potentially eliminate suspended passive losses. Your ability to sleep anywhere determines your quality of life on the road. ∙ The loneliness comes in waves — plan for it. It's not an if, it's a when. Schedule regular calls with close friends, use coworking spaces, join group activities. Don't pretend you're above needing human connection. ∙ Know your monthly burn rate. Track what you actually spend across different tiers of city. From ancient times to modern markets, gold and silver have captured people's attention—especially during seasons of uncertainty. It's one reason more believers are asking whether precious metals belong in their investment portfolios. The question isn't simply financial; it's also about stewardship. Where do metals fit—and where don't they—when we're seeking to make wise, faithful decisions with what God has entrusted to us?A Long History as a Store of ValuePrecious metals are among the oldest forms of money in human history. For thousands of years, gold and silver have served as a store of value. Even today, in an economy dominated by fiat currencies, they still carry an aura of stability and permanence.There's a practical reason for that: governments can print more dollars, but they can't print more gold or silver. As a result, investors often turn to metals during periods of inflation, geopolitical tensions, or financial instability. They're commonly viewed as a hedge—an asset that may preserve purchasing power when confidence in broader systems begins to waver.That perception holds some truth. But it's also important to separate reality from myth. Precious metals are not magic assets, and they don't function like traditional growth investments.How Precious Metals Differ from Traditional InvestmentsThey Don't Produce IncomeStocks may pay dividends, bonds generate interest, and real estate can produce rental income. Precious metals, by contrast, do not produce income. They simply exist as assets whose value rises or falls over time.That doesn't mean they can't appreciate. But it does mean their return profile is fundamentally different from owning productive assets. Gold sits still; businesses build.Prices Can Be VolatileMetals are often described as “safe,” yet their market prices can swing sharply. There have been extended seasons when gold and silver prices barely moved—or declined—reminding investors that stability and growth are not the same thing.Costs MatterOwning physical metals involves more than just the purchase price. Coins and bars often carry premiums, and they require storage, insurance, and security considerations.For those who prefer not to handle physical metals, exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and similar vehicles offer another path. These track the price of gold or silver without the logistical challenges of storing them, making them a practical option for many investors.Allocation Is KeyFinancial professionals who favor precious metals typically recommend keeping them as a small portion of a diversified portfolio—often around 5%, and rarely more than 10%. When metals dominate a portfolio, they can crowd out assets better suited for long-term growth.What Scripture Says About Wealth and SecurityThe Bible references gold and silver frequently—not only as commodities, but also as symbols of value, beauty, craftsmanship, and worship. Yet Scripture consistently warns against placing our trust in them.Paul writes, “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God” (1 Timothy 6:17).The issue isn't money itself; it's misplaced hope. Gold cannot redeem us, rescue us, or ultimately secure our future. Only the Lord can do that.Proverbs echoes this truth: “The wealth of the rich is their fortified city; they imagine it a wall too high to scale” (Proverbs 18:11). The key word is imagine. Wealth—even in solid forms like precious metals—can create an illusion of safety.That's especially important to remember because metals often attract attention during periods of fear. But fear is not a reliable investment strategy. Wisdom is. Fear rushes; wisdom moves slowly, with patience and prayer.Three Principles for Faithful Investors1. Metals Are a Tool, Not a TreasurePrecious metals don't need to be spiritualized or demonized. They're simply one part of God's created resources—useful when held with open hands and proper perspective.2. They Should Complement, Not Replace, DiversificationSome investors feel tempted to go all-in on gold during uncertain times. But Scripture doesn't call us to make decisions rooted in fear. Metals may play a role, but they shouldn't replace a well-diversified plan built for long-term growth and stability.3. Every Financial Decision Is Ultimately SpiritualWhether investing in index funds, bonds, real estate, or bullion, the deeper question remains: Lord, how can I honor You with what You've entrusted to me?If precious metals help reduce risk, preserve purchasing power, or support generosity over time, they may serve a wise purpose. But if they fuel anxiety or foster a bunker mentality, they can quietly pull our hearts off course.Precious metals may help preserve purchasing power, but they don't produce income, guarantee returns, or provide ultimate security. They are a hedge—not a haven.Our true security isn't found in vaults, markets, or accounts. It's found in Christ alone.
