And a young Air Force medic from Flint who boarded anyway.In this Radio Free Flint interview, Flint‑born Air Force hero Sgt. Phillip Wise recounts the harrowing crash of an Air Force transport plane loaded with hundreds of orphaned Vietnamese‑American babies, his survival in the cargo hold, and his decades‑long quest to honor the lost and the rescued.Wise traces his journey from Flint Southwestern High School to the U.S. Air Force, where he served as a senior medical technician on aeromedical missions across Southeast Asia. When President Gerald Ford authorized Operation Babylift to evacuate Vietnamese orphans, Wise's unit transitioned from the DC-9 Nightingale to the massive C-5A Galaxy to move hundreds of children in a single flight.Fifteen minutes after takeoff from Saigon, the rear cargo doors failed. The aircraft rapidly decompressed. Hydraulics were crippled. The crew fought to return to Tan Son Nhut Air Base before the C-5A crash-landed in rice fields outside the city.The disaster became one of the most devastating aviation accidents of the Vietnam War.Wise survived the cargo compartment impact and later received the Airman's Medal for heroism. He reflects on rescue efforts, months of recovery, reunions with now-adult adoptees, and the complicated legacy of Operation Babylift—heroism, loss, identity, and the ethics of wartime evacuation.This is a firsthand account of the 1975 Operation Babylift crash, told by a Michigan veteran who lived through one of the final tragedies of the Vietnam War.Sgt. Wise wrote the book "Fragile Delivery: Operation Babylift" which sheds light on the Boeing C-5A crash. His writing sheds light on the doomed flight, the brave men and women involved in Operation Babylift, and one man's story of near-impossible survival in the horrifying shadow of death as the plane split violently apart in swampy rice paddies.Sgt Wise was the only crew on the cargo area of the plane to survive the tragic plane crash. Wise told the Flint Journal, "The doctors thought I would be a vegetable. They thought I wouldn't be able to see out of my left eye or to walk,” the Flint resident and decorated veteran said. “I came through with 20-20 vision. I became a mailman. Greg begins with the real backstory: indulgence-selling tied to the fundraising machine behind the rebuilding of St. Peter’s Basilica and a chain of financial incentives involving an ambitious archbishop, borrowed money, and a gifted salesman—Johann Tetzel—whose catchy jingle promised liberation from purgatory at the drop of a coin. When Luther’s parishioners return with indulgences in hand, Luther doesn’t set out to start a revolution. He does what academics do: he drafts 95 points for debate and posts them publicly—more like a community bulletin board than a Hollywood act of defiance. But the moment doesn’t stay local. Two forces amplify it: A new technology: the printing press A predictable catalyst: students who love promoting their professor What was intended as a small-town disputation spreads rapidly, lands on the pope’s desk in Rome, and triggers a reaction Luther never expected—one that escalates through excommunication threats, imperial hearings, and eventually Luther’s dramatic stand before the emperor. James and Greg then trace the chain reaction: 1519 (Leipzig Debate): authority begins shifting toward Scripture over popes/councils 1520 (papal bull): Luther publicly rejects Rome’s demand to recant 1521 (Diet of Worms): Luther expects debate; Rome demands recantation Luther requests 24 hours, returns, and refuses to recant unless convinced by Scripture and plain reason Luther leaves under “safe conduct,” is “kidnapped” by agents of Frederick the Wise, and hidden at Wartburg Castle as “Knight George” In hiding, Luther produces a major turning point: his rapid German New Testament translation From there, the conversation turns to a crucial clarification often missed today: Luther did not teach modern “private interpretation” as individual autonomy. He wanted Scripture accessible, yes—but not atomized. That’s why catechesisand the teaching office matter: a catechism functions as a faithful constraint that helps the church read Scripture with shared boundaries rather than endless fragmentation. The episode closes by reframing the word Reformation itself: Luther never intended to create a new church. He aimed to reform the existing one—and the birth of Lutheran Protestant identity becomes, in many ways, an unintended necessity once Rome refuses the correction. However, the role gold plays in a long-term investment strategy is often misunderstood. In this episode of Healthy, Wealthy & Wise, Tessa speaks with Tyler Cunningham, Financial Planner at BWFA, about when gold may fit into a portfolio and when it may introduce risks that investors do not fully expect. Wisdom beats winning

Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Read more about Project23 and partner with us as we teach every verse of the Bible on video. Our text today is 1 Corinthians 4:1-5. We all make judgments every day. We should. Wise judgment is part of following Jesus—choosing what's right, resisting what's wrong, and evaluating what's healthy or harmful. But Paul is talking about something very different here: This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful. But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God. — 1 Corinthians 4:1–5 There's a difference between making wise judgments and pronouncing eternal judgment—and the Corinthians confused the two. They weren't just evaluating behavior. They were assigning motives, ranking leaders, critiquing hearts, and acting like they could see what only God sees. Paul says, "Your judgment—and even my own self‑evaluation—is too small to define me." Human judgment is horizontal. God's judgment is eternal. Paul isn't telling believers to stop using discernment. He's telling them to stop pretending they can see what only God sees. You can evaluate actions and doctrine. You should evaluate behavior. But you cannot evaluate a person's motives or eternal standing. That belongs to God alone. Live for God's approval, not human applause. People will misjudge you. You'll even misjudge yourself—thinking you're doing great when you're not, or failing when God says you're being faithful. But none of that settles anything. The final evaluation belongs to God. He will expose motives, reveal what's hidden, and reward faithfulness no one ever saw. And when He speaks, He will get it right. So live for that moment. Live for His verdict. DO THIS: Release one place where you've been overly self‑critical or overly concerned about someone else's opinion. Say: "Lord, I want to be faithful—You handle the final judgment." ASK THIS: Where am I confusing wise judgment with eternal judgment? Whose opinion has too much influence over my confidence? What would change if I lived for God's verdict instead of people's reactions? PRAY THIS: Lord, help me judge wisely but never assume Your role. Teach me to live for Your approval, trust Your timing, and surrender every final judgment to You. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Only Jesus"
