From 1984 until 1992 five National Garden Festivals were held in UK. One of them was in Gateshead in 1990. It lasted 157 days across that summer and received over three million visitors. People loved it and still talk about it today. The Garden Festivals were the idea of UK Conservative environment secretary Michael Heseltine in 1980. They were based on the German post-war Bundesgartenschau concept for reclaiming large areas of derelict land in cities. All the festivals were held in areas that had become derelict and poisonous in the wake of industrial decline. They each cost between £25 - £70 million. I made an edit of TV footage from the Gateshead Garden Festival and put this mix on it as a soundtrack. If anything the original footage is weirder than my edit. It presents a very strange world; giant inflatable Jonathan Swift characters, Civil War/Norman conquest re-enactors, Native Americans banging drums, Baphomet sculptures in amongst the begonias and what look like South Sea islanders with no clothes on playing cricket in front of Gateshead OAPS. A giant space ship was also situated near the banks of the River Tyne, It invited people on board for MISSION:TYNE & WEAR and experience a flight into the stars complete with adapted flight simulator hydraulics and night club lighting. The whole festival looks brilliant. You can watch the film here >>>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OinAh76S6BE&t=644s The garden festival itself is presented like some mad dream and in some ways it is. The festivals were produced to encourage global business into areas that were in steep decline. For Gateshead it was hoped the site would be occupied by Japanese and European technological companies. But it never happened and the land that the festival used remained empty for the next 10 years. The area around the River Team, a once highly toxic tributary of the River Tyne, got redeveloped into a nature park and in 2002 the festival site ended up having expensive Scandinavian inspired houses built on it designed by the Red or Dead fashion designer Wayne Hemingway. You can still trace the pathways of the Garden Festival as you walk along the River Team today. If you look closely too, in amongst the empty bottles of white cider, discarded laptops, torn suitcases, condoms and nitrous oxide bulbs you'll find remnants of the festival's sculptures and the foundations of the mad caterpillar monorail. It's become an eerie interzone that makes the footage of the Garden Festival seem all the more unreal. MM

It is with great sadness that the Mangalore Sugar Cane Interests Plc has been dissolved. Our esteemed CEO Peter Mangalore is no longer with us. The board decided that we should make a special mix of music dedicated to his memory. As well as being the chair and lead of Mangalore Sugar Cane Interests Plc for over 40 years Peter Mangalore was engaged in many numerous philanthropic activities supporting the community, too numerous to list in full these activities included: Exorcisms for Tesco's East Lancashire sites, mobile local cat alerts in his old white Mercedes, birds of prey community outreach in the wilds of Northumberland and finally single handedly keeping in business ALL of the second hand and charity shops in the North West & North East of England (with a special notation to Blyth Town Centre Salvation Army Charity Shop who without Peter's continuous support would no longer be trading). This is a live recording of my friend Peter Mangalore playing records just over 10 years ago at a night we used to do called Road to Rimini in Newcastle upon Tyne. Peter was the main DJ and played the final hour after Wee DJs live slot. It was an off shoot night called Face Your Fate which took place in the Northumberland Arms a literal underground boozer - the DJ set up by day served as a hot plate that would keep mince & dumplings warm for high street shoppers and Newcastle's professional shoplifting community. It was the perfect set up for Peter. Peter died this weekend. He was 42. Never got round to uploading this mix. This night was very special as it was the first time me and my mates had met Peter, we became firm friends after this and he would visit us up in the North East regularly. Pete had friends in the North East that loved him very much. We had originally connected through mutual friends - Ali Renault and the Human Shield Record Company crew/Magic Waves crowd who we had met a year previously. It's an understatement to say Peter was unique. He was a true outsider, supreme raconteur and a lot of fun to be around. We became very close. When on form and positive, he was a supreme force for good and an amazing individual. His enthusiasm for people, his generosity, talking to animals ('Alreet myeet'), seeing the absolute wonder in the most mundane and oblique shit - a champion of the weirdo. For the last few years Peter struggled with addictions and really poor health. At his peak though he was a mercurial force, egoless when it came to music and a generous creative talent. The loss of Peter will be felt by loads of folk especially in the North of England. He had a giant personality. I always felt this mix summed him up perfectly, a true outsider with a immense talent and raw energy. A live mix can really put you back in a time and place, especially when you can hear the crowd through the needles, it's an emotional mix for me and a proper time capsule of emotion and feelings. He had an incredible influence on me and introduced me and my peers and friends to so much good music - not just dance stuff. Peter saw the cracks in the reality tunnel and I owe him a great deal. Life was never dull around Peter. Michael x

For the Museums Association (MA) annual conference and exhibition this year we set up a private and confidential Failure Confessional™. We invited museum professionals to unburden themselves of the shame of museum failure and embrace a more reflective practice. We initially thought of it as a humorous provocation but then people started to pile into it across the two days and some people became really emotional and found it a really positive therapeutic experience, which took us by surprise. Luckily we were prepared as our Museum Confessor® was a trained CBT therapist. I also went around with a mic irritating and interupting people who were having a nice time at the conference to talk about failure and tried to work around museum language and ask questions about failure. Unsurprisingly many people find it an uncomfortable topic. Why don't museums talk about it? Why don't they admit failure? Or do they? What is failure to them? The conference is a big deal for museums in the UK, there are 100s of delegates who attend from all over the country representing different museums. The conference and exhibition also includes many companies and organisations that are connected to what is called the Heritage Industry; designers, consultants and people selling things to museums. This year it took place at the Manchester Conference Centre. They are usually pretty dry affairs but this year the MA organised a creative fringe programme called Festival of Change to stir things up a bit - the Failure Confessional™ was part of that. This mix is an edit of some of the interviews and includes a specially themed FAILURE playlist that includes Swans, The Smiths, New Edition, Patsy Cline, The Beach Boys, Loretta Lynn and Perry Como. We set up a twitter account to further wind up museum professionals about their institutional failures. https://twitter.com/MuseumFailures https://www.museumsassociation.org/news/02102017-festival-of-change-will-see-creative-interventions-at-manchester-2017
