Welcome to a special edition of The Writing Glitch podcast, where we delve into the fascinating world of puppetry and its role in enhancing literacy skills. In this episode, we enjoyed hosting Carol Richards and Linnea Smith, the dynamic duo behind Richard's Learning Systems. This revolutionary literacy program incorporates puppets, animation, and multisensory learning to teach reading. Join us as we explore the magic behind their approach and how it's transforming how children learn to read. The Genesis of Richard's Learning SystemsCarol Richards, the founder of Richard's Learning Systems, shared her journey from starting a tutoring service to developing a comprehensive literacy program. With the challenge of making her science of reading program accessible and practical, Carol had a eureka moment that led to creating a unique video-based curriculum. These videos, devoid of adult presence, feature puppets and animation to engage children in learning sounds, blends, digraphs, and eventually syllables, culminating in the ability to read complex words like "antidisestablishmentarianism."The Puppets of LiteracyThe program boasts a cast of charming puppets, each with a specific role in teaching literacy concepts. Miss Alice teaches the short "a" sound, while Silly Ball, the syllable scientist, helps students break words into syllables. Chef Cookie teaches blends with her whisk and animated ingredients, and Sophie introduces non-phonetic "red words" through arm tapping.A Family AffairLinnea Smith, Carol's daughter, brings her creative expertise and personal experience as a struggling reader. She played a pivotal role in producing the video series and creating the puppets, transforming them from simple sock puppets to the engaging characters used today.ExpandRichard's Learning Systems is not just for young learners. The program has succeeded with older students, refugees, immigrants, and even adults in the workforce. Its simplicity and effectiveness make it a valuable tool for many learners, including non-verbal students who have shown remarkable progress.Incorporating Writing Skills:The program also addresses writing skills through tracing practice, spelling exercises, and gentle introductions to sentence structure. The focus is on making learning as multisensory as possible, with tactile letter cards and activities reinforcing the connection between reading and writing.Accessible and Affordable:Richard's Learning Systems is designed to be both accessible and affordable. With a subscription model, teachers and parents can access the materials and videos needed to implement the program effectively. The emphasis is on short, daily sessions that fit easily into any schedule. Conclusion:Richard's Learning Systems is a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in education. By harnessing the appeal of puppets and the principles of multisensory learning, Carol Richards and Linnea Smith have created a literacy program that teaches children how to read and instills a love for reading. As we explore the potential of puppetry in education, Richard's Learning Systems stands as a shining example of how thinking outside the box can lead to remarkable outcomes in literacy development.Visit Richard's Learning Systems for more information and to explore the magical world of literacy puppets.Contact Carol and LinneaContact CheriUpcoming Event: May 11, 2024Being RecordedTier 1,2,3 Non-Academic Interventions to enhance structured literacy and writing skills ★ Support this podcast ★

What pace should we use to reach our audience in various situations, and how can we improve our communication using variations of pace? Christine explains how variations of speed, accented syllables, consideration of our listener and our environment can all affect proficiency of communication when it comes to pace. KEY TAKEAWAYS Speaking too slowly causes a sense of monotony and boredom to the listener. The points being made may not be heard as a result. I often have to speed up YouTube videos.Speaking too fast becomes garbled and hard to follow, losing your audience and creating irritation or even insult.   The choice of pace is affected by how we feel. When we are excited we speak faster, when less energised we talk more slowly, with less enthusiasm. Consonant clusters, new and borrowed words and phrases make articulation difficult when speaking a different language. Consider the acoustics of the room you are going to speak in before deciding on pace. Think about the people in your audience, their language, age and capacity.Consider consistency in your rhythm, slower for the more important words and faster for prepositions and articles.  BEST MOMENTS ‘I'm referring to pace in English. In a future episode, we will explore the fascinating features of pace across languages.''Speaking rate needs to be adjusted to different audiences. When we're not used to certain accents, our brains can't process what's being said as quickly.'‘We can also show when we are being reflective or trying to remember something by using a slower rate.' ‘You're Polish, used to speaking to Germans. Your German counterparts are used to your accent and speaking pace. Then, you go into an American company to talk to people in Southern America. On top of not being used to your accent or rhythm, they may have an unconscious bias that fires immediate judgement when you speak.'  CONTACT METHODEmail : christine@languagecouragecoaching.comWebsite : www.languagecouragecoaching.com2024 update - discount is finished! Having great skin is about more than just great skin care products. If your diet isn't right, if you're not moving your body enough, even if your mental health is not in great shape, then that's all likely going to show up on your skin. But sexual wellness might be a free (and fun) contributor to getting your glow on – so why aren't more skincare brands pushing this agenda? Studies have shown that sexual encounters (with a partner or on our own) have long-term skin benefits beyond causing that immediate glow. Self-pleasure can lead to a release of oxytocin, which lowers cortisol levels, leads to better sleep, and helps the skin repair itself. We speak to Erika Schwass, Science and Wellness Manager for clean-beauty brand Consonant Wellness, about:The science behind how our sexual release can improve our skin health by releasing estrogen, oxytocin, and other skin-enhancing hormones. How we can overcome the stigma of self-pleasure.Surprising facts: The anatomy of the female clitoris wasn't fully discovered until the 2000s.Consonant skincare's new “Come and Glow” kit.

One of the hardest parts of English pronunciation are what's called 'consonant clusters'. These are when two or more consonants are joined together without a vowel like FR as in friend or BR as in brown etc. In this episode, Jay will take you through all the possible 'R' clusters making sure that you can say each of them perfectly clearly. EPISODE 196: Yoga Nidra, Rest & Sleep Habits: How They Affect Sex & Relationships (00:05): You're listening to the Sex with Dr. Jess podcast. Sex and relationship advice you can use tonight. Brandon (0:19): Welcome to the Sex With Dr. Jess Podcast. I'm your co host Brandon Ware, here with my lovely other half, Dr. Jess. Dr. Jess (0:26): Hello, how did you sleep last night? That's what's on my mind. How'd you sleep? Brandon (0:30): That's what's on your mind. I slept okay. Wasn't bad, had a hard time falling asleep. But once I'm asleep I'm usually out for the count. Dr. Jess (0:38): Except when I wake you up in the night. Brandon (0:40): Except when you wake me up, and my default has been to start to rub your hand before I fall back asleep. Dr. Jess (0:46): I think you just hold it. Brandon (0:49): What do you know? You don't even know anyways, you're probably asleep. Dr. Jess (0:52): I'm feeling actually a little bit better today. My sleep has been so poor lately. With everything that's been going on, you know my schedule has been turned upside down. I don't know if we talked about the fact that we've been going to bed so early and I've been waking up by five. Brandon (1:10): We go to bed embarrassingly early, the last six weeks. Dr. Jess (1:13): But it's so weird because my whole life I've been a night owl, like my ideal would be to stay up 'til about 2:30 every night and get up by 6. Brandon (1:23): Really, 2:30? I'd be asleep by 12, 12:30, and I'd like to get up around the same, around 6. Dr. Jess (1:32): Yeah but I can't do that. I mean it's not enough sleep. I did it for so many years, and it's not healthy and that's what we're going to be talking about today. About how important feeling rested and getting a good night's sleep is to overall health and wellbeing, but also to relationships and to your sex life. So before we dive into that. I want to say thank you to “Let's Get Checked”, check them out if you are looking to do any medical health testing at home, http://www.letsgetchecked.com.
