"The earth seemed unearthly." The character of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness is one of the most enigmatic depictions of villainy in modern times. By the time Marlow reaches Kurtz' compound, his reality has completely been dismantled. Nothing is stable and everything he thinks he knows is subject to deconstruction. Author Joseph Conrad uses doubles, paradoxes, and ironies to show Kurtz as both representative and enemy of the civilizing mission. Admist the confusion and chaos, Marlow outlines his controversial views of the people he sees in the Congo, while we as readers ask ourselves to what extent is the evil represented in Heart of Darkness representative of a universal condition? This episode is part 4 in a larger series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers all of chapter 2, right up until the fateful moment where Marlow comes face to face with Kurtz. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! Leadership is often framed around qualities like authenticity, empathy, and vulnerability. Larry Coval believes effective leadership ultimately depends on something more practical: the skills and behaviors required to help other people succeed. In this episode, Dr. Cindra Kamphoff speaks with Larry, a seasoned business executive, leadership strategist, and founder of Arcane Leadership Concepts. After nearly four decades leading people and organizations, Larry wrote the leadership manual he wishes he had received when he first became a supervisor at 23. Larry explains why many leaders are unprepared for today's workplace, including the challenges created by hybrid teams, increasingly diverse workforces, and artificial intelligence. He also introduces the ARCANE model, a continuous process leaders can use to recognize their shortcomings, commit to meaningful change, and become more effective for the people they lead. In this episode, you'll learn: Why leadership should be viewed as a set of learnable skills and behaviors How the ARCANE model helps leaders identify and address performance gaps What business leaders can learn from the way sports coaches observe and develop people Why delegation should be used as a developmental tool How leaders can approach performance improvement plans more effectively Why AI represents a shift in the skills employees need rather than clear evidence of a widespread jobs collapse How leaders can better support hybrid and diverse teams Episode Resources & Links Lary's Website: https://arcaneleadership.com/ Mentally Strong Institute: https://mentallystronginstitute.com/ Request a Free Mental Breakthrough Call: https://freementalbreakthroughcall.com/ Download the National Confidence Research Study: https://confidencestudy.com/ Pre-order The Confidence Habit: https://www.confidencetools.com/

Today I'm reviewing Vicious Miscreations by Jenn Neal, the first book in The Fractured Worlds series—a New Adult dark urban fantasy pitched as Six of Crows meets Arcane, with one particularly deadly twist: the plants can kill you.
In 1993, Hollywood took the bright colours, bouncing rhythms and cheerful nonsense of Super Mario Bros. and transformed them into a wet cyberpunk dystopia filled with fungus, humanoid dinosaurs and Dennis Hopper. It was only the beginning. For the next three decades, video game adaptations repeatedly reproduced the names, costumes, monsters and locations that players recognised, while struggling to understand the experience that made those games matter. Street Fighter tried to turn a character-select screen into a military action film. Resident Evil replaced vulnerability with superhuman spectacle. Assassin's Creed recreated the rooftops but kept dragging audiences back into rooms where people explained genetic memory. In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave explores why video games presented Hollywood with an adaptation problem unlike books, comics or television. Games are not only stories or worlds. They are things players do, built around movement, timing, failure, discovery and the relationship between a player's hands and a responsive world. From Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider and Doom to Detective Pikachu, Sonic and the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, the industry slowly began to stop apologising for the source material. Then television pushed the breakthrough further, using Castlevania, Arcane, Twisted Metal, The Last of Us and Fallout to find new ways of replacing the controller without losing the feeling behind it.Video game movies were never cursed.Hollywood was simply using the wrong controls...Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Describing the sound of Sacred Harp singing can be difficult. Arcane, otherworldly, and overwhelming, it's a unique a cappella form of shape note Christian hymn singing that was born in England in the 18th century, but took root in the American south. It's not something you listen to so much something as experience. This week on Transmissions, host Jason P. Woodbury speaks with Matt Hinton. Along with his wife, Erica Hinton, he's the director of the 2006 documentary Awake, My Soul: The Story of The Sacred Harp; in 2025, the duo returned to the film, remastering it and crafting a full update. This month, the film is screening in the Los Angeles area, including showings in Glendale, and Santa Monica, at the Laemmle Glendale, Laemmle Royal, and the Monica Film Center. Sacred Harp utilizes a shape note system, in which shapes—triangles, circles, squares, and diamonds—are paired with syllables—fa, sol, la, and mi—to represent the notes in the traditional scale. Awake, My Soul explores the culture that centers around this form of communal worship, and invites viewers into this strange musical world. In addition to his work as a documentarian, Matt Hinton is a musician himself. He's a member of the rock band Luxury, which features three Orthodox priests. He made a film about that group too, the 2019 movie Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury. Though the soundtrack for Awake, My Soul, as well as a companion disc, Help Me to Sing: Songs of the Sacred Harp, featuring John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin, Danielson, Richard Buckner, The Innocence Mission, author Rick Moody, and more, have long been out of print, they returned to streaming last month as the film celebrates its 20th anniversary. Join us this episode as we dig into the nature of communal singing, folk traditions, and the mysteries of sacred sound. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
As Marlow travels deeper into the heart of darkness, we get our first look at the enigmatic Kurtz. At first just a peripheral figure who is important to the ivory collection operation of the nameless "Company," Kurtz comes to occupy more of Marlow's thoughts the further into the Congo he goes. Marlow also meets the characters of the Manager and the Brickmaker, who put different theories of authoritarianism and imperialism to the test. How complicit was the average grunt in the imperial operation? This episode is part 3 in a larger series on Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. It covers the end of chapter one and the beginnings of Marlow's crisis at the intersection of belief and reality. Midnighters, this one is built on groove. It is late July on the island. The nights barely cool down and everything I play out here lately has that rolling, physical quality. Episode 217 came together with that in mind.We open with a KASIA double: "No Competition" with Equinøx on Arcane, then "The Realm," her Drumcode collaboration with Layton Giordani. After that it breathes. Pablo Say's "I'm a Dreamer" is the melodic moment of the hour. If you write in about one track this week, my money is on this one. Then the groove takes over. A.D.H.S. on DCLTD, RHAPSODIE's "Void," and a middle stretch with four Natura Viva Black records, the second week running the label lands that many in the show. Pig&Dan's "Aptitude" is my pick of the four. Play this section loud. Monika Kruse's "Latex" on Terminal M anchors the back half, KENZ's "Blade" brings the Drumcode peak, and JJ Mullor and Gombok Project close with "Grooveaholic." Fitting title.Full track IDs are on 1001Tracklists, as always. Hit reply and tell me which track hit hardest. I read everything. And if you are on the island this week: I am playing Friday at Tomorrowland Rooftop Sessions Ibiza. This is the music from the show, played live, open air, sunset into night. Urban fantasy tales are built around magic being real, whether hidden behind a veil or out in the open, but where did it come from? Has it always been there? Was there an event or a catalyst? Maybe a god or a figure from history (recent or ancient) who unlocked the magic of the world.Arcane Awakenings is about the emergence of magic, about the start of the supernatural story, the blindfolds dropping from the eyes of those with the talent or skill to see it. It might be the story of how magic came to a city, or maybe the origin story of a new urban fantasy heroine. We seek to share the sense of wonder, terror, or pure chaotic confusion across cities where characters are experiencing magic for the first time. Midnighters,Four Natura Viva Black records in one hour. That was not the plan when I started digging this week, but the label is on a run right now, and it shows. Daniele Papini's Hidden Source opens the show, AKKI and Kaspar hold the middle with Horizon, and DJ Dextro closes everything down with Unbalance. When one imprint bookends your whole set, you pay attention. In between, Drumcode does what Drumcode does. Rafael Cerato and Charles D bring Right Now, a track I have been hearing everywhere this summer, and Mark Reeve drops a tool called Work that is exactly that: no frills, all function. Listen also for the two Arcane cuts back to back around the halfway mark. KASIA and Shalev called their track I Like It Raw, and after Linska and Duss set it up with Criminal, raw is precisely what you get.The stretch from Sophie van Hayden's The Void into Ignacio Arfeli and Tommahawk's The Unknown is my favorite moment this week. Two titles about darkness and uncertainty, and somehow the most hypnotic ten minutes of the hour.If this episode does something for you, comment and share it with one person who needs a proper hour of techno. That is worth more to me than any algorithm.SebastiaanThis podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

As Marlow prepares for his journey to the Congo, he visits a psychiatrist who gives him his first glimpse at what he is getting himself into. His introduction into the pseudoscience of phrenology is an ideological starting point for his journey to Africa. Reader and character alike are hit with a wave of disorienting feelings as Marlow has his first interactions with the people of Congo, seeing how they are dehumanized. In the modern day, controversy rages around whether this depiction of Africans represents author Joseph Conrad's view, a larger western view that has been enshrined in the study of history, or just the viewpoint of a character in a book. This is the second episode in a series on Heart of Darkness. It covers most of Chapter 1 of the book, Marlow's journey to Africa, and his first interactions with the people of the Congo. We also discuss Chinua Achebe's famous critique of the book. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. Midnighters,Six months into 2026, and these are the tracks that never left my bag. This is a bonus episode of The Midnight Project. One hour of the records that defined my sets in the first half of the year. Recorded in one take from the studio in Ibiza. You will hear a lot of Terminal M, Drumcode, and Arcane in this one. That was not planned; it is just where the energy lived these past six months. Monika Kruse appears twice, once with a brand new remix and once with a remastered classic that still destroys rooms 25 years after it first did. Some records earn their place in a midyear list by being new. Others earn it by refusing to age.Full disclosure: two of my own tracks made the cut, Paws and a private edit of HI-LO's REESE. What's it look like when a Yordle has sex? Not everyone is brave enough to ask those sorts of questions, but we here at Hard Choices fear nothing, not even getting a little addicted to humming "Enemy" over and over. Look, the opening credits to this show are compelling and we will make not apologies for our feelings on the matter. Nor will we apologize for all of our takes on the fuckability of these characters who are all wildly different flavors of sad! Join hosts Dan Mulkerin, Claire Vannette, MeganBob, and making her Hard Choices debut, Anna Emmaline, as they riot through Zaun and Piltover, ranking characters with such scrupulous scientific accuracy that they make Viktor and Jayce look like amateurs. Who could possibly be the zenith, median, and nadir of fuckability in a world that has everything from sexy (and unsexy) drug lords to cosmically powerful scientists to pit fighters to political powerhouses to brutal warriors? We'll do math until we know for certain! Will Dan no-scope Bob's number one? Will Claire read us a fanfic about her Arcane fave? Will anyone correctly guess how big Ambessa Medarda's strap-on is? This episode is full of surprises, so grab your favorite drink at The Last Drop, put in your airpods, and prepare for two hours of filthy, filthy joy! Persona is heading to live-action, and Netflix has the rights. The breakdown covers the creative team now attached, what the deal signals about Netflix's growing video game pipeline, and why Persona 5 fans should keep their expectations measured for now. This one runs through the names that matter: Christopher Monfette as writer and showrunner, with Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood of 21 Laps producing, the same banner behind Stranger Things. From there it widens out to Netflix's track record with adaptations like The Witcher, Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Castlevania, then lands on the bigger picture for the franchise, with Persona 6 confirmed this month and Persona 4 Revival on the way. Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness (1899) is both a scathing critique of European imperialism and a reminder that all humans have the capacity to succumb to the heart of darkness. It also is not without controversy, as people have been debating it's meaning and essence for over a century now. What exactly is the heart of darkness? Was the Belgian Congo a unique circumstance of imperialism or just another example of human nature at work? Is the text of Heart of Darkness a legitimate critique of the imperial mindset, or is it actually just upholding the very norms and imperialistic conventions it is ostensibly dismantling? This is the first episode in a series covering the book. It provides an overview of the historical context of European imperialism in Africa, including the ivory and rubber boom in the Congo. We also set the ideological stage for the narrative of the book. The civilizing mission is discussed and we wonder if we are all just prisoners of our own historical moment? Was european imperialism just another cycle of histories that have already happened long ago? We also dive into Marlow's origins, back story, and recruitment with "The Company." -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify! The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Vidare pratar vi också mer om Nolans kommande storfilm The Odyssey, uppföljaren till The Social Network - The Social Reckoning, att Doctor Who tappar sin showrunner samt att Anthony Head har gått bort - kanske mest känd som Giles i Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I filmdelen har Niklas sett actionskräckfilmen They Will Kill You och pixars nya animerade film Hoppers. Tove å sin sida har sett Sacha Baron Cohens flippade rulle Ladies First. Slutligen har Jonas spelat Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library, ett tillfredsställande slags sorteringsspel. Tack & Förlåt! Puss Hej!

Show Notes Can neuroscience and physics explain how D&D spell slots actually work? In this episode of FGGGbT (Fascinating Gadgets, Gizmos & Gear-Based Technologies), the Brain Trust — Daniel J. Glenn, Dr. Michael Dennin, and Ben Sieper — crack open the skulls of arcane magic users to figure out what’s really going on inside. We break down Vancian magic and why wizards forget spells after casting them (spoiler: it’s RAM, neural pathways, and sleep science). We explore spell slots as discrete energy units using battery analogies — from AA batteries to D batteries to full-on thermal runaway. We also dig into magic scrolls as portable energy storage, the key brain differences between wizards, sorcerers, and warlocks, and the science of necromancy. Plus, Dr. Dennin introduces his original house rule — Dennin’s Law of Unused Magical Energy — which asks: what if you could downcast a spell by forcing high-level energy through a low-level spell slot? (Hint: it involves lithium battery fires and a barbarian with a fan.) Whether you’re a D&D player, a science nerd, a fantasy fan, or all three, this episode will change the way you think about magic forever. Doug and Justin dig into one of the most relatable questions on the internet: what was cool, attractive, or impressive at 18 that is straight-up embarrassing by the time you hit 30? The answers get deeply personal, very funny, and honestly a little painful. Stories include: Doug's era of competitive eating and genuinely bragging about how much food he could put away in one sitting, Justin serenading girls with acoustic guitar and firmly believing it was working, Doug entering a male beauty pageant at Augustana College specifically to wear David-statue underwear in the swimsuit competition and performing an original heartfelt song called "Chill" in front of a full auditorium, Justin spending his UPS paychecks exclusively on throwing stars and nunchucks from the mall, and both hosts processing the cringe of house party concerts they gave while extremely over-served. The community and Reddit weigh in with their own entries: basement dates at your parents' house, wearing overalls when you're not a farmer, bragging about how often you drink, living with a mattress on the floor and no groceries like it's a personality, getting into street fights, decorating your apartment with empty booze bottles, and refusing to put your shopping cart back. Also this episode: Doug has big news — he got a new job. And even bigger news — Natalie finally watched Top Gun Maverick and her reaction did not disappoint. Sweaty palms, wide eyes, hand-holding during the final act, and the ultimate compliment: "Why did you wait so long to show me this?" Plus a discussion of what's next on Natalie's movie journey: Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Hunger Games, and the story of what happened when Daredevil Born Again Season 2 was accidentally too intense for a 10-year-old. And Justin still hasn't watched Arcane. Doug is working on it. Then it's time for The Verdict: the Letterboxd review guessing game. This round features reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu, Obsession, The Florida Project, How to Train Your Dragon (live action), Silence of the Lambs, The Lighthouse, Don't Worry Darling, and the new Superman. This week's recommendations: Justin — Win Win (2011). Paul Giamatti and Bobby Cannavale. Underseen gem. Rent it for $3.99. Doug — Daredevil Born Again Season 2 on Disney+. Charlie Cox is phenomenal. This 13 part podcast series explores these massive questions and more through the lens of Nazi Germany and the ordinary people who collaborated or resisted as the Third Reich expanded. You'll not only learn about the horrifying, surprising, and powerful ways in which the Nazis seized and maintained power, but also fundamental lessons about what fascism is-how to spot it and why it spreads. Through exploring the past, I hope to unlock lessons that everyone can apply to the present day. Check it out on my Patreon page at: https://www.patreon.com/reflectinghistory. As atrocities and human rights violations continue in the Congo Free State, King Leopold II of Belgium sends out a "Commission of Inquiry" to the Congo to clear his name. Things don't go as planned. After one final hail mary attempt to sway public opinion, Leopold finally agrees to sell his colony to the state of Belgium. For many, the long nightmare was now over. For others, it was only beginning. This is Part 6 in a series on the Congo Free State. It covers how Leopold lost control of his colony, some of his last ditch attempts to maintain it for himself, the transition to Belgian Colonial Rule, and a brief history of Congo after independence. The last episode will cover what historian Adam Hochschild calls "The Great Forgetting." -Consider Supporting the Podcast!- Leave a rating or review on apple podcasts or spotify!
