Austin Unruh returns for another deep, practical conversation on silvopasture — this time focusing on “the dip,” livestock pressure, pruning, shade strategy, pigs and poultry in tree systems, and what to do in Year Zero before you ever put a seedling in the ground. If you've ever stared at your pastures on a hot day wishing you had more shade… this one will light a fire under you. What we cover in this episode:The “dip” in silvopasture: why years 1–4 feel like a grindShade as the low-hanging fruit — and why it's only the beginningLivestock pressure: how to protect trees when cattle, horses, and wildlife want to destroy themPruning young vs. established trees (and the dangers of over-pruning)Species selection for different goals: shade, fodder, privacy screens, and livestock feedWhy mulberries and persimmons shine for pigs and poultryRunning pigs IN establishment-phase silvopasture (pros, cons, protection methods)Tree spacing, patterns, and why grids usually beat random placementsManaging compaction, vole pressure, and bark hardeningYear Zero → Year Two: fall tasks, maintenance, ordering trees, and setting up for successWhy early wins matter psychologically (and how to get them)Continuous grazing vs rotational grazing when it comes to tree cropsIf you're serious about silvopasture, this episode gives you a roadmap from the ground up — from species selection and timing to realistic maintenance and livestock integration. Austin breaks down the parts most graziers underestimate: the grind, the setbacks, and the discipline it takes before shade and feed finally show up. Whether you're planting five trees or five hundred, you'll walk away with clearer steps and fewer unknowns.Resources mentioned:Trees for Graziers — treesforgraziers.comCastor oil vole deterrent productsAcres U.S.A. This week we're discussing every album by Nine Inch Nails. Made up solely of Trent Reznor (and later on Atticus Ross), NIN is a band that we've all heard and most likely already enjoy quite a bit. Whether we're loudly screaming the lyrics to "Closer" at family gatherings or just rolling around in mud in our free time, Nine Inch Nails is a band that no one isn't familiar with. However, we haven't heard all of their albums until now. Britain in the summer of 1976 was hot, angry, on strike and broke; a country on the brink. In the shadows, four raw, unpolished young punks were limbering up on the sidelines, unaware of the impact they would make. From half-empty art school shows to now-legendary gigs at Manchester's Lesser Free Trade Hall and London's 100 Club Punk Festival, Episode 2 takes you inside the band's earliest and most shambolic shows. At the heart of it all: a band more interested in provocation than perfection. As guitarist Steve Jones told the NME during this period: “We're not into music, we're into chaos.”Fights broke out, glasses were thrown, and punk ripped itself from the underground onto the front pages. The Pistols were forming a following, and they were soundtracking a country crying out for change. The Sex Pistols were ready to deliver it, whether Britain wanted it or not.Episode 2 features archive interviews from: Johnny Rotten, Glen Matlock, London club promoter Jack Barrie, Paul Cook, Peter Hook from Joy Division and New Order, Sid Vicious, Siouxsie Sioux, Malcolm McLaren and 100 Club promoter Ron Watts.Alongside this, there is a new interview from TV Smith from The Adverts.Presented by Gina Birch and Steve LamacqA BBC Audio Production
I had so much fun chatting with Chris Wade and Will Menaker of the podcast Chapo Trap House about Year Zero #1, published by Bad Egg in 2025 which is billed as “5 scintillating tales of madness” which promise to cross “time, genres, and good taste”. This comic anthology blends historical research, social commentary, and flights of fancy from several genres, all in keeping with their Dirtbag Left sensibility. The book features stories from Amber A'Lee Frost, Chris Wade, Will Menaker, Felix Beiderman, and Matt Christman, with art from comics superstars Simon Roy, Justin Greenwood, David Cousens, Ken Knudtsen, and Dean Kotz. Year Zero #1 is the first of three oversized books. Chris Wade is a podcast producer for Chapo Trap House, Hell on Earth and Hell of Presidents, And Introducing, and Infinite Cast. He's also produced and directed short films, music festivals, and many years ago written for Slate.com. He co-hosted both Hell on Earth (a series on the 30 Years War) and Hell of Presidents (a series on POTUSes) with Matt Christman. Check the New Books back catalog for our conversation about Hell on Earth, one of the three times I had the honor of interviewing the great Matt Christman. Will Menaker is Host Number One of Chapo Trap House, a political commentary and comedy podcast which debuted in March 2016. Along with his fellow Chapos he wrote The Chapo Guide to Revolution, which I talked to Matt Christman amount in a past episode here. Learn more about your ad choices. As always there are spoilers ahead! You can follow the podcast on social media on Threads, Instagram and Bluesky. If you would like to be a patron of the podcast you can join Patreon and for £3 or $3 a month you can get ad free version of the show. https://www.patreon.com/everyscififilm There is a trigger warning for discussion of rape in this episode. I have marked the beginning of that part of the discussion with a beep and the discussion lasts for four minutes and four seconds after the beep if you wanted to skip past it. Last week we told you “Don't Panic!” but this week we focus in on the panic. Panic in Year Zero was directed by and stars Ray Milland and is about a father taking his family on the road to do some camping. One the way there a nuclear bomb is dropped on Los Angeles and the world starts to fall into disarray. Not because of the bomb causing devastation or radiation but because of how human s are absolute nutters given the slightest chance. This film has a very 1950s sensibility but with a Jazz laden soundtrack that hints at the unruly decade ahead. The Federal Civil Defense Administration in the US in the early 50s was set up by President Truman to educate and prepare the public in case of an attack on US soil. The short film mentioned in the discussion The House in the Middle can be viewed on YouTube here. This episode we talk not just about the film but the human fascination with apocalypse. I have the perfect guests for the task. Steven Schlozman is a psychiatrist and a writer of books including the novel The Zombie Autopsies which was being adapted to film by George Romero before his death in 2017. John Wills is a Professor of American Media and Culture at the University of Kent. He has written lots about popular culture including 1950s American and Nuclear film. Chapters 00:00 Introduction 01:52 The non-nuclear nuclear film 07:10 Nuclear drills in schools 10:07 USA nuclear prep: Civilian education and CONELRAD 16:33 Jazz music and sociopaths 20:05 Daddy's gaze 26:39 The fun of Armageddon 32:02 The developmental stage of apocalypse fantasy 37:35 Ann is always wrong 39:21 Sexual violence 43:27 A pre-cursor to zombie apocalypse 48:25 Legacy 52:45 Recommendations for the listener Recommendations Steven: The Day After (1983) is a made for TV film. John: The book Every Home a Fortress: Cold War Fatherhood and the Family Fallout Shelter by Thomas Bishop NEXT EPISODE! Next episode we will be discussing The Day of the Triffids! Although we will be using the 1963 film as a starting point there will be a lot of discussion about the original novel and the differences between the theme heavy book and the fun 50s style scifi of the film. The film can be found on Fubo, Roku, Pluto and Plex and a few other online streaming platforms in the US and UK. The Just Watch website is a good resource to find where the film may be available in your region.

This is an abridged version of a long overdue conversation with Scott Welker, long-time gamer and successful game designer with titles based in Savage Worlds, D20, Year Zero, and soon a system of his own making. Scott is one half of Thieves Guild Gaming. Our conversation is a full on, open-minded examination about focused attention in RPGs - otherwise known colloquially but ambiguously and unhelpfully as immersion. You can watch the full conversation, with its load of annotations and notes, on YouTube: https://youtu.be/LdqytLSQd9oScott likes to say "Immersion is impossible!" We get into what he means by that. I, as you know, Dear Listener, like to say that immersion, like so many other things, is frequently misunderstood. We get into that, too. For added value, one way we explore the topic is through Scott's games and how they were written. Like many things, there used to be a bipartisan consensus that in a disaster, you help as many people get through it as quickly and safely as possible. In the past 20+ years, though, we've seen a shift in how the right responds to climate catastrophes — including building out a robust selection of conspiracy theories from chemtrails to Flat Earth. Our Witch Images series continues onward as we explore the music videos of Ghost. This week, we take a look at the band's second music video, Year Zero, once again directed by Amir Chamdin. The uncensored video premiered March 25, 2013 on Stereogum, and depicts a coven of witches who welcome a dark stranger into their midst as they prepare for the coming of Satan, in child form. A censored version of the video was uploaded to Ghost's official YouTube channel two days later, on March 27, 2013. Mike is joined by Emily Intravia (The Feminine Critique) and screenwriter Howard A. Rodman for a sobering descent into Panic in Year Zero! (1962), directed by and starring Ray Milland. Loosely inspired by Ward Moore's chilling short stories “Lot” and “Lot's Daughter,” the film imagines a Los Angeles family thrust into chaos after a nuclear attack decimates the city. As Henry Baldwin, Milland leads his wife (Jean Hagen) and children (Mary Mitchel and Frankie Avalon) on a desperate quest for survival in a world unraveling by the hour. With Cold War dread baked into every frame, Panic in Year Zero! is an eerily prescient slice of apocalyptic Americana—a proto-survivalist tale that predates The Road and The Walking Dead by decades. We unpack its moral ambiguity, its place in the post-bomb canon, and why it remains a startling relic of atomic-age anxiety.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.

Thematic trilogies are fascinating and exciting. Though characters may reappear, they are really trilogies around a theme or fascination or concern. Italian master Roberto Rossellini rose to the top of world cinema in the 1940's with his trilogy of movies focused on World War II and its immediate after effects: Rome, Open City (1945), Paisan (1946), and Germany Year Zero (1948). The first two movies deal with the war and the occupation of Italy first by Nazis then by American soldiers. The last movie suddenly jumps into the belly of the beast and examines immediate post-WWII deprivation from the point of view of a German boy and his struggling family in a bombed out Berlin. These movies helped create and define Italian neo-realism and shared a singular focus on war's effects on everyday people. Secret Movie Club founder.programmer Craig Hammill talks about these movies and other interesting thematic trilogies like Wong Kar Wai's Love trilogy and Steven Spielberg's 9/11 trilogy along the way.

Calling Slow Noodles her one story, Chantha Nguon recounts being hesitant to write about her life until her collaborator, Kim Green, suggested that she write a recipe book. When she began reviving these food-related memories, she didn't realize they would lead to her telling her life story. Here, she talks about Year Zero, food and hunger, and her work experience in NGOs, the creation of Stung Treng Women's Development Center, and the significance of ‘slow noodles'.To support Chantha's work, please donate to: https://mekongblue.com/donate/.

Dylan Jones – writer, former editor of i-D, Arena and GQ - was 15 in 1975 and dressed like Henry McCullough of Wings (“a lot of denim and silk scarves”), a time he thinks had enormous influence on the following five decades. There are many highlights in his latest book ‘1975: The Year The World Forgot', a lot of them discussed here with David and Mark, including … … the lasting impact of the cover of Patti Smith's Horses. … the “frightening” Millie Jackson, 50 years ahead of her time. … why Blood On The Tracks was the first middle-aged rock album. … the information black-out and the value of the ‘70s rock press - particularly Street Life – for such experimental music. … how the sarcasm of Steely Dan still feels contemporary – “Donald Trump is a figure they could have made up 50 years ago”. … the three key rhythms of the ‘70s – Fela Kuti's afro-beat, James Brown's funk and Klaus Dinger's Neu!-beat. … the reason Donna Summer's Love To Love You Baby is 17 minutes long. … how Brian Eno's accident led to the birth of ambient music. … “writing about pop music allows you to write about anything”. … how the sophistication and intellect of the mid-‘70s was pilloried in Punk's Year Zero. … the Quiet Storm genre - aka “foreplay music” – from Sade to Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. ... the unrecognised power of the female record-buyer and the sexism of the rock press. … and the greatest record of 1975! Howard Goldenthal hostingIn the countryside across Cambodia, mass graves known as the killing fields, haunt the landscape. They are reminders of the reign of Pol Pot, one of the 20th century's most violent political leaders. He was the leader of the Khmer Rouge. When they seized power they undertook a radical experiment to create a pure Communist utopia. The plan was called "Year Zero."Pol Pot's communist utopia led to the murder of approximately two million Cambodians. Cities were emptied and citizens were forced into rural labour camps. Only the lucky survived. In Howard Goldenthal's documentary, Year Zero Plus 50, he follows the stories of survivors of that era. For them, the quest for justice remains. Produced by Howard Goldenthal and Joan Webber, originally aired on Sunday Magazine.Storylines is part of the CBC Audio Doc Unit

Today on the Free Outside Podcast, I talk with Connor “Jackrabbit” Chapdelaine, who's attempting the Calendar Year Triple Crown—thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail all in a single year. We break down how the idea got planted during a hike on the AT, what it takes to train for 8,000 miles, and why he's bringing a pillow, a stove, and maybe even a thermos.Follow Connor/Jackrabbit online: https://www.instagram.com/JackrabbitHikes/Connor shares his strategy for navigating snow in the Sierra, reroutes on the PCT, and fires on the CDT—plus his plan to survive town stops without spending his entire budget. We also get into ultralight gear hacks, and his favorite trail meals. Connor breaks down his food tier list (spoiler: mushroom Knorr = trail exile) and how his dad is helping run the back-end logistics with a label maker and full “dad command center.”Support us by supporting our sponsors: CS Coffee: https://www.csinstant.coffee/Janji: https://janji.com/Garage Grown Gear: https://www.garagegrowngear.com/If you've ever been curious about the logistics, gear, food, and mindset needed to thru-hike the PCT, CDT, and AT in one year, this episode is packed with real insight and ridiculous stories—including tuna and peanut butter wraps, dry-scooped coffee, and a thru-hiker potluck that no one asked for.Chapters04:00 The Aspiration of the Calendar Year Triple Crown10:30 Overcoming Obstacles in the Journey13:51 Planning and Timing for Success19:25 Budgeting for the Adventure24:20 Family Support and Logistics25:12 Training for High Mileage31:29 Food Choices on the Trail37:58 The Quirks of Trail Humor38:51 Trail Food Favorites and Disasters40:56 Resupply Strategies and Bargain Finds41:59 The Art of Coffee on the Trail43:46 The Triple Crown Experience45:38 Friendships Formed on the Trail47:59 The Emotional Connection to Hiking50:04 Gear Essentials for Long Trails56:14 The Importance of Comfort Items59:34 Post-Hike Plans and Future Goals01:05:15 Memorable Trail Names and Their StoriesSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

After the communist Khmer Rouge took over Cambodia on April 17, 1975, they herded everybody out of the cities and into socialist “cooperatives.” Radha Manickam and family were sent to the country's northwest, where they and 1.8 million others were dumped out of trains and told to start building villages. It was Year Zero, supposedly the start of the agrarian utopia promised by their Marxist masters.Instead, Radha watched the Khmer Rouge turn Cambodia into the realm of the dead. This series tells a hard and brutal story, but it's also a story of hope and, ultimately, redemption. It's based on my recent interviews with Radha, along with my 2016 book about his experiences. The book and this series are titled “Intended for Evil.”Support WORLD News Group at wng.org/donate
