2024. What the Hell happened?  This was the year that rushed up at us like a freak storm. This year, all the eco-systems were fully committed to the Sixth Extinction, and so are we. 2025. We awake from a deep sleep and change completely. Our bodies are ecosystems, too, knowing the Earth. This is a wild party we can't refuse.  Our clothes are tearing, and the wind is peeling away our walls.  We searched, but we found that our logical thinking was gone.  We must find our love.  Make the Earth's storm more wild?  Nothing can change without our love. Initially a critique of consumerism, it now focuses on environmental justice, climate change, gentrification, and social issues. The church's services blend music, theater, and preaching to inspire direct action and community engagement. It also provides support to marginalized groups, including migrants, and promotes social change through local activism.

Neil Young, Talking Stick Amphitheater, Phoenix, AZ, 4/27/2024RAGGED GLORYMaybe Neil Young isn't as spry as he used to be, but who is? At 78, to be playing hard core rock with the passion he displays isn't only a goddam miracle, it's a revelation.  And, just like young Micah Nelson, who filled in for Nils Lofgren (who's on tour with his other Sensei, Bruce Springsteen) to jam with Crazy Horse stalwarts Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums - demonstrates a generational melding that gives hope to us aging rockers. So, also when my son suggested that he and I fly to Phoenix to catch Neil's latest (I won't say last because who the fuck knows) tour, I gratefully accepted the familial love that was being offered. And, what a show it was! The opening act of Reverend Billy and the Church of the Stop Shopping Choir was a weird, trippy, and funk-fueled way to begin the evening.  But since combining positive energy against Climate Change with tornado-like rock and roll force is Neil's thing, it didn't surprise me that he recruited this legendary street performer to be his emissary. The early spring evening temp in Phoenix was perfect, and Neil was in a generous mood to give this fans what they craved - the golden oldies from Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Zuma, and Rust Never Sleeps - with a short acoustic interlude playing Comes a Time and Heart of Gold (which everybody sang along to). It felt like a fucking campfire. And, looooong kick ass jams, which is what my son was craving. Down by the River and Cortez the Killer were at least 15 minutes each. And, what Neil may have lost in dexterity, he more than makes up for with heart-tugging, sonic crunching lyricism. For my money, he's one of the best rock guitarists who ever slung an axe. There are compensations to getting older; one of which is sharing your heroes with your children, and having them love them along with you.

Why do we mow our lawns? That's the question posed by our guest, artist and urban ecologist Chris Kennedy of the Urban Systems Lab and Central Texas Mycological Society; the answer is a tangle of municipal policy, attitudes toward property ownership, and status anxiety. Chris joins the pod to tell us about his research into city lawn ordinances and weed-control laws in the United States. In the City of Austin, having “grass and weeds more than 12 inches in height is considered an unsanitary condition and a code violation,” and many homeowners' associations mandate that turfgrass must comprise a minimum of 25% of a front yard, despite local water restrictions. We discuss how these strictures are rooted in redlining practices and fear of the natural world, how they stand in opposition to sustainable or regenerative landscaping practices, and what citizens here in town, and around the country, are doing about it. Mentioned in this episode: Austin's Tall Weeds and Grass Ordinance; the municipal code; a cringe video about weeds on the city's official YouTube page; “Rethinking The American Lawn” by Will McCarthy in Texas Monthly, about Lewisville, Texas;  “Weeding Out Bad Vegetation Ordinances” by Bret Rappaport and Bevin Horn; Sustainable Development Code; updates to codes to allow managed natural landscapes in Minneapolis, Austin; pushback from residents in Ontario and Chicago in 2018 and 2019; a sunflower citation in south Austin in 2021; complaints about how the city fails to follow its own rules; San Antonio DSA's Code Busters; Texas Senate Bill 198 “relating to restrictive covenants regulating drought-resistant landscaping or water-conserving natural turf;” Joan Nassauer's “Cues to Care”; and the “NYC Glyphosate Map” by Reverend Billy. Christians & Jews celebrate control over the Earth, its storms & bodies of water & animals. An obedient natural world is the theatrical frame of Moses and Jesus. But that is the virtual reality of faith. In fact, of course, the Earth is in control & never more than now, as we careen into the Sixth Extinction. **Cities After…will be taking a short hiatus. We'll be back with new episodes in September!** Continuing with Pt. 3 of Cities After…Summer Climate Change series, Prof. Robles-Durán talks to the world-renowned performance artist and activist William Tallen, famously known for his character Reverend Billy, described in a recent National Public Radio article as a Veteran anti-consumerist crusader taking aim at capitalism and climate change. Tallen and Robles-Durán discuss the destruction of NY's East River Park, the inseparable connection between art and the environment, the Sixth Extinction, greenwashing, and more. About our guest: William Tallen began performing as Reverend Billy on the sidewalk at Times Square in 1998 outside the Disney Store, where he proclaimed Mickey Mouse to be the anti-Christ, duct-taping Mickey Mouse to a cross. Reverend Billy's early sermons decried the evils of consumerism and the racism of sweatshop labor and what Talen saw as the loss of neighborhood spirit in Rudolph Giuliani's New York. According to William Tallen, the Reverend Billy character isn't so much a parody of a preacher as a preacher motif used to blur the lines between performance and religious experience. "It's definitely a church service," Talen explained to Alternet, but, he added, it's "a political rally, it's theater, it's all three, it's none of them." Alisa Solomon, the theater critic at the Village Voice said of Reverend Billy's persona, "The collar is fake, the calling is real." Along with the Church of Stop Shopping, a project directed by his life partner Savitri D, they have been referred to by academics as "performance activism," "carnivalesque protest," and "commercial disobedience." In addition to protest performances throughout a given year, Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping have organized various campaigns focused on consumerist and environmental issues, often highlighting a particular company they feel best symbolizes the issue. The group stages actions in public spaces near the targets of their actions, often in the lobbies, halls, and plazas in buildings owned by the companies they protest.  Since April 2020, Reverend Billy and Savitri D, have been hosting the EARTH RIOT podcast, which they describe as a comedy-infused, music-filled exploration of humanity's most urgent issue—the planet's Sixth Extinction. Made by "Earth-loving urban activists" from The Church of Stop Shopping, their podcast educates, inspires, and urges listeners to embrace reality and take action.
