Firearms knowledge for the novice, curious and experienced.
Depending on what side of the debate you’re on, the total number of people killed by firearms each year in the US is between 30,000 and 40,000 people with about half being suicides. When it comes to these deaths, the anti-gun crowd is always too quick to blame firearms and the pro-gun crowd is always quick to blame mental health. If we want to get more people on the pro-firearm side, we can’t simply brush aside these deaths as mental health problems and move one. To help discuss how we can do this appropriately, we’ve invited Michael Sodini with Walk the Talk America on the show. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode How Walk the Talk America began How the self-diagnostic tools on their website were developed and can be utilized. Is there a way to effectively distinguish between people who need help and those who don’t? What are some of the stigmas that their organization fights regarding both mental health and firearms? How can a person restrict access to a firearms, without nullifying their ability to quick access? Are gun control laws framed as providing people with mental health effective (red flag laws, reporting mental health treatment, comprehensive mental health checks before obtaining a firearm). Gun control has been a thorn in the side for almost every pro second amendment advocate for a extended period of time. However, the origins of gun control go back a lot farther than most of us realize and were applied in a very specific and discriminatory fashion. In this episode we’ve been joined by Devin Perkins from the Trench Work Chronicles to discuss the history of gun control, how its being applied now, and what we can all do to help protect the second amendment for everyone. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode Let’s start off with the basic question. A lot of people new to guns, think the attack on the second amendment is fairly recent, but the history of gun control has a much earlier and darker history. Can you kick things off by explaining the origins? During this era, what were some of the most common gun control laws put on the books? Even after the era of slavery, when black people were “guaranteed” the same second amendment rights as white people, black people still faced challenges with gun ownership. Can you elaborate a little on what these challenges were? Why are people so scared to see black people with guns and what are some of the things that the pro-2A community (black and white) do to help eliminate this fear? Do you see any correlation between the gun controls laws established back then and the gun control laws being established now? Another thing that people get confused about is the general shift in gun ownership. Back in the day a lot of homes had guns in them, now not so much and the majority of pro-2A point to this shift in culture as a reason for more gun control laws being passed. Do you think disarming black people in the past created a sense of “security” among the population that added to this mindset? As a concealed firearm carrier you’ve decided that you’re willing to defend the lives of not only yourself, but friends, family and even strangers. While most people train and prepare themselves for a gunfight, it’s just as important to train for the aftermath as well. Ideally in a gunfight the attacker would be the only person sustaining injuries. However, there is a good chance that you or another innocent person in your vicinity will be shot. Knowing the ins and outs of tactical medicine is a must for not only this scenario, but many others. On this episode we’ve invited Shawn Whittington to discuss tactical medicine. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode In lieu of a tactical medicine trauma kit, a lot of people probably carry a first aid kit. Can you start of by explaining the basic differences between a first aid kit and a trauma kit? When is it appropriate to carry a first aid kit, and at a bare minimum what should it consist of? When is it appropriate to carry a trauma kit, and at a bare minimum what should it consist of? Is there a good mix between a first aid kit and a trauma kit? At the risk of carrying a paramedics bag around with you at all times, what are some of the other essential items to carry in your trauma kit to make yourself even more prepared? What would you say is the single most important item to keep in your trauma kit? Is there anything that you see in a typical trauma kit that you really think people can go without? If you look up tools that should be in your everyday carry gear a flashlight is always on that list. However there really isn’t a discussion on whether or not your flashlight should be weapon mounted. To help discuss this we’ve brought back Jon Terry. In season two Jon explained the importance of situational awareness. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode Why should a flashlight be part of your everyday carry gear? Where should you keep a flashlight? How many flashlights should you carry? Is there an actual use for multi-setting flashlights? Should you mount a light to your weapon? Things you can do to eliminate the risks associated with weapon mounted lights? How to eliminate the risks associated with activating your weapon mounted light? Firearm Rights Advocacy When it comes to advocating for almost anything in this life there are certain challenges. Sometimes what you’re advocating for goes against the grain of popular opinion, our day to day lives can get in the way and sometimes people are just more comfortable with the status quo. Now more than ever advocating for firearm rights has become a major issue. In the past you would see certain groups of people talk about restricting firearms rights then not really follow up on their talk. However at this moment, not only politicians, but media, anti-gun advocacy groups and sadly one of the most influential group of people, celebrities, bring up the issue of gun rights continuously again. On this episode we’ve invited Jerah Hutchins on the show to discuss some of the challenges, successes and the ongoing fight for firearm rights. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode The role she has played in launching multiple gun ranges. Why she became a firearms instructor and what personal touches she’s used when creating classes. How she has differentiated her ranges to be more accepting to all firearm owners. How she became a firearm rights advocate. Her advice on becoming a firearm rights advocate. How to become a firearm rights advocate regardless of your time and financial resources. How to get your voice heard when the media won’t let you talk. Why being honest is important when advocating for firearms rights. Why your local gun range can and should be the most important firearm rights advocate in your community. It’s on everybody’s mind right now. We cannot get away from COVID-19. It’s on every news channel and website. However, what should we be doing as responsible adults to get through this and prepare for future emergency situations? While recording our May episode on weapon mounted lights, we realized that it was only proper to address this issue. Our guest Jon Terry was gracious to spend extra time discussing this vital topic. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode How you should be preparing and behaving during this pandemic and future pandemics? How much food and what type should you have at the ready? How much water should you have at the ready? How much fuel should you have stored? Should you be buying a firearm and how much ammo should you have on hand? Relationship Between Children and Firearms When it comes to firearms one of hardest concepts to understand can be how firearms and children can coexist. If you ask one person they’ll tell you there isn’t anything wrong to start kids shooting the second they’re able to lift up their arms. You ask another person and they’ll tell you that children shouldn’t even know what a firearm is. From knowing when and if you should expose your children to firearms, to dealing with tragedies involving children, the subject of children and firearms is both sensitive and emotionally charged. On this episode we’re excited to have author, professional firearms trainer / consultant, and member of multiple firearms related organization board, Rob Pincus on the show. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode When is it appropriate to introduce children to firearms and how should you start this conversation? How do you start this conversation if your child has no perceived interest in firearms, but you still want them to know the basics to keep them safe? Why creating a home defense plan is essential to keeping your family safe. Why staging firearms is important to a home defense plan, although everyone seems to recommend locking them up. Why evading and barricading in a self-defense situation is more important than confronting a potential attacker. How schools almost always start with barricading instead of evading during active killer situations? What are the real products keeping your children safe at school? How we can get schools to start teaching firearm education again. Judaism and Firearms When you think about Judaism and firearms what comes to mind? Do you think of anti-gun politicians like Michael Bloomberg and Bernie Sanders or do you think about how millions of Jews might not have died during WWII at the hands of Hitler. As one of the oldest groups of people, Jews have faced persecution and violence for thousands of years and yet there still seems to be an anti-gun mentality attached to people of the Jewish faith To help clarify this perceived conflict of interest and provide better insight, we’ve asked award winning Second Amendment Advocate, author and public speaker Yehuda Remer or as most of you might know him “The PewPewJew” on the show. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode The positive benefits of the NRA’s Eddie Eagle program and how Yehuda has provided additional information and benefits to this program with his books. How firearm use and pro-gun beliefs transcend across all faiths and religions. Myths concerning why firearms have no place in Judaism: Jews shouldn’t use firearms, because eating hunted food isn’t Kosher. If Jews are willing to put rules and restrictions in place to make things Kosher, then it makes perfect sense to put rules and restrictions on firearms. That Judaism doesn’t permit the use of firearms for self-defense or kill people. Judaism instructs that Jews should want to live in a Utopian society; therefore the use of firearms is not permitted. Jews shouldn’t use firearms, because the NRA is an anti-Semitic organization. The myth used by anti-gun rights advocates that Hitler didn’t ban firearms to Jews and firearms had nothing to do with their fate. One thing you should know about Judaism and firearms. We preach it to everyone we meet when talking about firearms, training! We preach that no matter what type of firearm or even weapon you carry, it doesn’t matter without the proper training. We preach dry fire training, live fire training, shooting drills, etc. While all of these training methods are things you should work on, there is another area of training seldom discussed, mental training. Just like how your choice of firearm doesn’t matter unless you have the right physical training. Your physical training won’t matter unless you have the proper mental training. To discuss in depth we’ve asked lead instructor at Top Firearms Instruction and author of the book Fundamental Handgun Mastery Tyson Kilbey to be on the show. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode What are the most common mental mistakes that people make when training with or shooting firearms? What can you do mentally and physically to make sure following the four rules of gun safety becomes second nature? Which of the four basic rules of gun safety seems to get broke the most? How do you mentally overcome the anticipation of your shot breaking? What type of mindset should you have when you’re firing at the range, a competition and in a self-defense situation? What type of shooting competitions are great for beginner shooters? Why you shouldn’t let costs keep you away from shooting and training? What can you do at the range to prepare yourself for a self-defense situation? How to mentally prepare for a self-defense situation? How to counter the argument that concealed carriers only want to be heroes? How to overcome mental stagnation with firearms training? What accessories can you actually install on your firearm to help with your skill level? What type of advancements are we going to see in firearm training both physically and mentally? Understanding the Confusing World of Firearm Laws We all need help understanding the confusing world of firearm laws. Firearm laws can be extremely difficult to comprehend; they’re different from state to state and can even differ from city to city within the same state. Even when you have them figured out, it seems like they’re always about to change, have already changed or have changed without you even knowing it. How does the government have the right to differentiate the rights assigned between firearms and firearm accessories? What gives private companies the right to pass regulations that infringe on our constitutional rights? What are the largest threats to firearm owners (currently and in the future)? Myths Surrounding Women and Firearms with Kerry Slone With the rate of women carrying concealed firearms continuously on the rise, it seems ridiculous to us that an argument actually exists against them doing so. There seems to be a vast amount of ridiculous arguments on why women shouldn’t carry firearms for protection. In this episode of Trigger Discipline we’re going to dispel the myth of why women shouldn’t carry concealed firearms. To help us, we’ve asked Kerry Slone, President and Founder of We the Female to be a guest on our show. About Kerry Kerry started We the Female about a year ago to stand up for domestic violence victims. Specifically when Washington State passed House Bill 1639, she decided to take a stand and let everyone know how this bill “designed” to reduce gun violence actually hurts victims of domestic violence. When not speaking in front of crowds on the steps of Washington’s state capitol building she’s traveling around the country explaining the importance of situational awareness as a key to an individual’s survival. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode The personal experiences that have shaped who she is and what she has become. Is it really more dangerous and even deadly for a victim of domestic violence to be armed? The challenges women face and advice for when deciding to become firearm owners and concealed carriers. Are women more susceptible to prosecution when using a firearm to prevent domestic abuse or sexual assault? How the pro-gun community can help their own cause. The existence of liberal second amendment supporters actually exists and how we can work with them. The NRA isn’t all bad. Additional Tools – What Else Should You be Carrying besides Your Firearm? So you just purchased your firearm, you’ve completed any mandatory training, passed your background checks and have that little piece of paper stating you are legally allowed to carry your firearm concealed in public. Do you think you’re ready to go out in public? The quick answer is probably not. In previous episodes this season we’ve discussed the need for additional training and the need to have the right mindset. Besides your firearm what other tools should you be carrying on you at all times. What other tools are essential when carrying your firearm in public. In this episode we’re going to discuss three things: what tools are essential to carry while concealing a firearm, what tools are important, but not vital and what tools are being put out in the tacticool universe that are never really needed. Situational Awareness...The Most Important Tool One of the most important habits for people to work on is their ability to be aware of surroundings at all times. Whether at work, driving your car or simply relaxing at home, staying cognitive of your outside environment can be a key to success and even a matter of survival. The term used to describe this phenomenon is situational awareness. Depending on the application situational awareness is definable in many ways. In this episode of Trigger Discipline we’re discussing situational awareness and how it applies to concealed firearm carriers. To help us explain situational awareness in more depth, we’ve brought Jonathan Terry a certified NRA and CCW instructor on as a guest. John Terry is an Army qualified Ranger and Army Sniper with numerous other qualifications, deployed to Iraq between 2005 and 2007 and Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011. He’s performed numerous protective details, body guard and sensitive site security detail work both abroad and stateside. Currently he works as a part time instructor at 88 Tactical Range and Readiness Center. Here he teaches self-defense, handgun and carbine classes each with different level of complexity. He also teaches the Nebraska State approved CCW class. When not teaching, he’s performing private in home and corporate safety and security assessments. He also works to develop safety and security policies and is involved in personal high risk mitigation consulting. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode: How do you define situational awareness? Why is situational awareness important in your everyday life? Is situational awareness inherited or can it be learned? How to hone your situational awareness skills? How to combat stigma related to situational awareness? How to maintain situational awareness in today’s world of over stimulation and complacency? What are Cooper’s Levels of Awareness? Is it okay to relax and how you can decompress? Is profiling okay? Additional Training for Concealed Firearm Carriers with Jordan Bradley Our first episode of the season kicks off with a bang! A lot of firearm Owners had the benefit of growing up with firearms in their household and had certain tactics and training ingrained into their memory as children (like Pete). Unfortunately, for a large amount of people interested in firearms this was not an option (like Nick). Before Nick picked up a firearm and starting shooting he took a “handgun basics” class. The class lasted about four hours, but covered basic safety rules, including dry and live firing exercises. This class might not have been comprehensive, but provided more than enough training for him to reach the level of comfort needed to go to the range by himself. However, it’s always been clear to him that his skills could always improve with additional training. Many people’s first experience with firearms are classes required to obtain your concealed carry permit. At the time of this recording 38 states require a training class prior to obtaining your permit. While it’s our constitutional right and honestly awesome that the remaining states don’t require you to take this class, it is always a good idea to use your best judgment and realize if and when you should take some sort of training. In this episode we’re going to talk about training that every concealed firearm carrier or even firearm owner should invest in. To help us out, we brought Jordan Bradley on as a guest. Jordan has ten years of experience in law enforcement with time spent on the force as a member of a SWAT team and firearms instructor. As an instructor he has taught multiple classes including courses in active shooters and close quarters battle. Currently he works for the Department of Defense. Topics and Questions Addressed in This Episode: Should you be a concealed firearm carrier? What should you know before becoming a concealed firearm carrier? What is the minimum amount of training a new concealed firearm carrier should have? Do you have the humility to know how much training you need and to accept that you need that training? What type of CCW class is right for you? What type of basic safety training should every concealed firearm carrier acquire? What are some advanced training tactics that a concealed firearm carrier can pursue? How much training should you have to be effective as a concealed firearm carrier? Episode 2 - The four basic rules of gun safety In this episode we go over the four basic rules of gun safety. It's almost a guarantee that if you follow these four basic rules you will never have to worry about accidentally hurting somebody with you gun. Additionally, if everybody followed these rules we could almost guarantee that accidents involving guns would be practically eliminated. So what are the four basic rules of gun safety? 1) Assume that every gun you come across is loaded until you have personally cleared it. That means that even if you clear your firearm, leave the room for a second and come back to your firearm - CLEAR IT AGAIN! 2) Never, ever point your gun at something that you are not ready and willing to destroy. It's simple. Do you want to shoot your best friend? No, then don't point your gun at them. Do you want to shoot that target at the range? Yes, then go ahead point your gun at it. This seems simple, but takes self awareness. 3) It's our namesake. Trigger Discipline! This is another one that will take some practice, but is fairly simple. DO NOT put your finger on the trigger until you are ready to take your shot. It's been ingrained into our heads that our finger belongs on the trigger when picking up a gun, unfortunately this is a good way to shoot the floor, ceiling, yourself or worse somebody else. 4) Be aware of your surroundings before you shoot. Be aware of whats behind what your shooting and what's to your sides. Would you shoot at a target if your friend was standing behind it? Of course not. Would you shoot at a target if somebody was running from the side towards your target? Of course not. Before you take your shot, make sure every thing around you is clear.
It’s our very first official episode! We’re keeping it simple and want to provide some basic firearm knowledge to the person who has absolutely no idea what guns are. We’re covering what some basic gun slang actually means and what terms you should be using. We’ll address common ammunition calibers and also go over some basic types of fire arms. If you’re an experienced in firearm use, this episode probably won’t expand you knowledge much, but hopefully you’ll tune in and get to know us a little more. Who We Are I’ve had an interest in firearms ever since I can remember. However, at home my passion of firearms was not shared with my family and unfortunately never had the chance to fully develop. Fast forward, about 25 years (marriage, career, children, etc.), during a random conversation with my wife, we both discovered a shared interest in visiting a shooting range. After shooting my first round, all of the love and passion for guns locked away in my childhood memories immediately flooded back. With what I call my true experience only extending just over a year, I asked my friend Pete to help discuss these issues in a real and factual based way. Knowing that Pete being a former county sheriff, swat team member, firearms instructor and an individual who’s been around firearms his entire life would be an invaluable resource. Our Belief We believe that guns can be safe, do not need to be scary, can be useful, vital and even fun with the littlest of effort by the gun user. Our Mission Trigger Discipline’s primary mission is to provide valuable information for people interested in entering the firearm world, fosters curiosity about firearms or wants to expand their existing knowledge. There are a lot of resources that currently exist, but the majority of available information requires some basic knowledge and understanding of firearms. There is no doubt when you jumping into the firearms pool it can seem like you are being pushed into the deep end without a lifeguard in sight. Don’t get us wrong. There are a lot of sources out there who can provide the exact guidance you may need and we would be happy to recommend any of these to you. However, we strive to differ ourselves by providing information in multiple formats allowing anybody to learn regardless of their schedule Additionally, if you have followed the news at all you no doubt have realized that gun control in this country is a polarizing topic. According to all of the information readily available to citizens of the United States of America and even the entire world, you are allowed to have one of two opinions on gun control. Either, guns are the root of all evil and all pro-gun advocates are gun clinging psychopaths with a disproportionate love affair for guns who care about nothing else other than their guns. Therefore nobody should have guns, or anti-gun advocates are attempting to disarm all citizens to enslave us and warp our minds to conform to their view of a utopian society where we are all pawns in their human version of chess. Therefore everybody should be gifted a gun (or maybe even a tank) at birth, to protect society from evil dictators. Our secondary mission is to clear a path through all of the misinformation and smear campaigns generated by both sides of the above extremes. We realized that this is a difficult task. People have been indoctrinated to the point where these concerns are valid in their mind. When a gun involved tragedy occurs, both sides retreat to the same extreme point of view. Unfortunately, this does nothing to solve a problem. The only thing this accomplishes is personal reaffirmation of an individual’s existing point of view. Trigger Discipline feels the need to productively discuss facts in an effort to bring people closer together, giving them the ability to see things from a different perspective and willingness to compromise in a way that we can protect people, provide safety and ensure that the rights of every citizen guaranteed to them by our Constitution are upheld.
