What role does fear and trust play in the gun safety debate? I recently sat down for a follow up conversation on the topic of gun safety with 2 friends of mine from Braver Angels. In December of 2021, I conducted a round table event with some friends on the same topic. A lot of things were left unsaid and unresolved in that conversation, as many conversations go when it comes to contentious topics. I asked my friends Mark Beckwith and Paul Norris to rejoin me for this follow-up conversation.Paul Norris graduated from UC Berkeley. He has a bachelor's degree in psychology and a masters' in counseling. A gun owner from age 12, he is an NRA Benefactor member and an advocate for gun safety. He worked at Apple Computer and UCSF in software development and the application of software to business and human needs. He is currently retired but still works part time in counseling. He is active in Braver Angels, serving as a moderator and state coordinator. Mark Beckwith Is a a bishop in the Episcopal Church and a long-time gun violence prevention activist. Mark is one of the co-founders of Bishops United Against Gun Violence.  Mark too is a leader in Braver Angels. He is passionate about helping people move beyond the confines of their political and religious silos in order to find common ground. Kristin Song became a gun safety activist after her 15-year-old son Ethan was killed with an unsecured gun in his best friend's house. After learning that the negligent gun owner would not be charged, but instead, his 14-year-old son would be charged with manslaughter, Kristin was determined to strengthen Connecticut's safe storage law and put the responsibility on gun owners instead of children.Kristin's unifying approach in Connecticut was instrumental in bringing together both major political parties to put aside their affiliation, leave their egos at the door and keep kids safe. Ethan's Law requires all guns to be secured if a child or unauthorized person can gain access, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support.Kristin expanded her mission to keep kids safe to the federal level. Ethan's Law was introduced in the Senate and House in 2021. We're closing in on 400 million guns in America, weapons that have been used to kill 1.5 million Americans between 1968 and 2017. In 2020 alone there were more than 45,000 gun deaths. The beyond tragic and senseless mass shootings at schools has become all too routine. Most Americans want stricter gun laws which they believe will reduce the senseless killing in our country, which leads the world in both the number of privately owned firearms and gun-related deaths. The Supreme Court, of course, didn't take public opinion into account when it struck down a more than century old New York City ban on concealed firearms. Politicians do, however, pay close attention to polls. At the federal level, President Joe Biden signed a bipartisan law designed to make Americans safer in our gun-toting nation. Hailed as a "great start" and a rare but welcome exercise in reaching across the aisle, the law will result in safer citizens, but didn't include much of what gun advocates say is really needed to effect meaningful change. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a new law that gives citizens incentives to pursue gun manufacturers and dealers who sell illegal firearms. In New York, Democratic leaders, undaunted by the Supreme Court, have pushed through new gun restrictions at vulnerable locations like schools, malls, and stadiums.  But what can lawyers and lawsuits do about it? Plenty. What reasonable measurers can be put into place that will not infringe on Second Amendment rights?  Several. Are we seeing litigation over these issues? You bet.  For more specifics, listen to my interview with Adam Skaggs, chief counsel and policy director at leading gun safety advocacy group Giffords Law Center, co-founded by former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords. Prior to Giffords Law Center Adam was senior counsel at Everytown for Gun Safety and at the Brennan Center for Justice, where he worked on election law issues.  Adam's commentary has been published in Slate, Politico, the Atlantic, and the New York Times, among other publications, and he has been widely quoted by media ranging from the Wall Street Journal and Fox News to the New York Times and MSNBC. Adam graduated summa cum laude from Brooklyn Law School, received an MS in Urban Affairs from Hunter College of the City University of New York, and holds a BA, awarded with distinction, from Swarthmore College. If you would like to learn more about Giffords Law Center and how you can get engaged, please reach out to to them. Produced by KSQD90.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 5:00pm (PDT) “How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!” ― Thomas Jefferson How do we do politics right when the Republican Party has abandoned America? Americans were in “possession of” and were building upon, the “precious blessings” of the traditions, principles, values, rights, and the Rule of Law that no other people on earth enjoyed until the Republican Party abandoned: Truth, Science, Women (Choice/ERA), LGBTQ+ citizens, Black citizens, Voting, Healthcare, Unions, Public Education, Child Care, Separation of Church and State, Higher Education, Minimum Wage, Equality, Environmental Issues, Covid Masks/Vaccine, Gun Safety, Fair Elections, the Climate Crisis, and even Democracy itself. How do we do American politics right when over the past four+ decades, Republicans and some Democrats have subjected the American people to massive amounts of stress and levels of strain that could make our society crack? Interview Guest: Egberto Willies, producer and host of “Politics Done Right,” is an activist, author, political blogger, radio show host, business owner, software developer, web designer, and mechanical engineer in Kingwood, TX. Egberto Willies is an ardent Liberal who believes tolerance is essential. His favorite phrase is “political involvement should be a requirement for citizenship.” Egberto also believes that we must get away from the current policies that reward those who simply move money and capital to become wealthy but who produce nothing tangible for our society. If a change in these policies does not occur, America will be no different from other oligarchic societies where a few accumulate massive wealth while the rest are mathematically left out because it is impossible to catch up. Egberto discusses these issues daily on his Pacifica Network radio show, “Politics Done Right” and at his blog www.egbertowillies.com.

Moe is joined by Andy Parker, Director of the SuperPAC, "Andy's Fight," and Author of the book, "For Alison: The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father's Fight for Gun Safety." On August 26, 2015, the lives of Andy and Barbara Parker changed forever when their daughter Alison, a journalist for WDBJ7, was murdered on live television near Roanoke, Virginia. Vowing to do whatever it takes, Andy turned his anger into outspoken activism and action to fight gun violence. From branding the NRA a terrorist organization to publicly calling out legislators for their cowardice, Andy is willing to say what others only think. With assistance from the Georgetown University Civil Rights Law Clinic, he has now taken on Google in an effort to remove the video of Alison's murder from YouTube. Moe and Andy discuss his new SuperPAC, "Andy's Fight," which launched earlier this month. Andy's Fight is different from other gun-violence prevention groups, in both focus and tactics. Andy believes: A. Disinformation plays an enormous role, with violent imagery organizations like Facebook not only unwilling in trying to to stop, but actively promoting for engagement/clicks, killing us. No country's perfect, but other democracies like Germany, U.K., Canada, etc have at least tried to rein in disinformation from Q-anon types. B. Andy goes further than other gun reform groups that seek to put band-aids on gaping wounds. They will call for universal background checks and red flag laws, but often stop short of fully supporting an assault weapons bans and high capacity magazine bans. Andy thinks both of these measures are essential. C. Aggressiveness. Andy's Super-PAC will not be playing nice with Republican Senators like Pat Toomey or Susan Collins in the hope for bipartisan legislation. If you are failing to protect your constituents, they don't care who likes you, or about bipartisanship, or that you're a good golfer. They're coming for you to tell your constituents what kind of ghoul you are. The website for the PAC is www.AndysFight.com Moe and Andy alson discuss his most recent piece for 'The Independent,' which is titled, "My daughter was killed by a shooter. A bipartisan bill in Congress is one step forward for gun safety, but the Supreme Court just pushed us two steps back. As the legislative path to reducing gun violence has closed, we might have more success if we can influence the way people think about guns in America. How can we change hearts and minds rather than laws, and, in doing so, make gun culture anathema instead of something we celebrate or just roll our eyes at?

Moe is joined by Andy Parker, Director of the SuperPAC, "Andy's Fight," and Author of the book, "For Alison: The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father's Fight for Gun Safety."On August 26, 2015, the lives of Andy and Barbara Parker changed forever when their daughter Alison, a journalist for WDBJ7, was murdered on live television near Roanoke, Virginia.Vowing to do whatever it takes, Andy turned his anger into outspoken activism and action to fight gun violence. From branding the NRA a terrorist organization to publicly calling out legislators for their cowardice, Andy is willing to say what others only think. With assistance from the Georgetown University Civil Rights Law Clinic, he has now taken on Google in an effort to remove the video of Alison's murder from YouTube.Moe and Andy discuss his new SuperPAC, "Andy's Fight," which launched earlier this month.Andy's Fight is different from other gun-violence prevention groups, in both focus and tactics. Andy believes:A. Disinformation plays an enormous role, with violent imagery organizations like Facebook not only unwilling in trying to to stop, but actively promoting for engagement/clicks, killing us. No country's perfect, but other democracies like Germany, U.K., Canada, etc have at least tried to rein in disinformation from Q-anon types.B. Andy goes further than other gun reform groups that seek to put band-aids on gaping wounds. They will call for universal background checks and red flag laws, but often stop short of fully supporting an assault weapons bans and high capacity magazine bans. Andy thinks both of these measures are essential.C. They're coming for you to tell your constituents what kind of ghoul you are.The website for the PAC is www.AndysFight.comMoe and Andy alson discuss his most recent piece for 'The Independent,' which is titled, "My daughter was killed by a shooter. None of us want Republicans' thoughts and prayers." Not having the right support or guidance, I had quickly maxed out my credit cards and had student loans was in so much debt. I did not even understand the idea of having an emergency fund.  I worked for big corporations and learned a lot about debt and money management.   It wasn't until the birth of my first child that I made the decision to really get out of debt and take control of my financial freedom. Changing my money mindset, establishing a plan and sticking to it, self-discipline, and seeing the positive outcome really helped me reach my financial goals. I loved the feeling it has provided and I want to share that with as many people as possible.
