In this episode I'm talking with Utah-based songwriter and US Army vet Andrew Wiscombe. A former Army Sniper turned Berklee trained award-winning songwriter, Andrew's ability to clothe stories, words, and emotions in American roots music has received great praise from fans and critics alike. He has drawn many comparisons to some of the great contemporary songwriters/poets of our time. Wiscombe has shared the stage with the likes of Ray Wylie Hubbard, .38 Special, Mary Gauthier, Julian Lage, Dorothy, The Lil Smokies, Micky and the Motorcars and many others. Whether singing through the eyes of a child, the hands of a hard-working family man (he is a dedicated husband and father of three boys) or through the scope of his sniper rifle, Andrew has a story to share that will resonate with the most human parts of the listener.to get your hands on THE TRIAD METHOD: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/product/the-triad-method/Become a Blues Guitar Show Member: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribeHead over to www.thebluesguitarshow.com to subscribe to the mailing listIf you find this stuff useful leave me a review on Spotify or Apple PodcastsShoot me a question to cover in the upcoming episodes by emailing ben@thebluesguitarshow.comBecome a plus member now: https://www.buzzsprout.com/950998/subscribe Download the Triad Method: https://thebluesguitarshow.com/the-triad-method/Support the show
Yemen's Houthi militia attacked two commercial ships in the Red Sea with drones on Monday. A Houthi spokesman identified the vessels as the Panama-flagged MSC Clara and the Norwegian owned Swan Atlantic. The Houthis said the ships were attacked because they failed to respond to calls from the group to stop their movement through the Red Sea. The Houthis say they have been attacking vessels on the Red Sea with links to Israel in protest of the Jewish State's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. World War 3 is heating up and expanding. Now the founder of the Maverick Survival School, Craig combines valuable survival skills and mental health support, with himself continuing to be on a rehabilitation journey for the severe PTSD caused by his service, and what happened after he made that record-breaking shot. In this episode, Evan and Austin from Griffin Armament discuss their stories of attending sniper school in Fort Chaffee, Arkansas. From dirtying up ghillie suits to ruck marching in the heat, the Griffin brothers talk about the mental toughness they had to develop in order to endure the stress of training in harsh environments. Additionally, they mention the historical significance of this program, and how their success in graduating sniper school has applied a leadership mindset to their current successful careers. On this week's podcast, Rad interviews Ricardo Perez, former US Army sniper, author of Born To Fail: Embrace Hardship To Forge Your Warrior Spirit, and current research scientist at the University of Washington Department of Virology. He shares his deployment in Kandahar, from carrying around a 50-cal sniper rifle to documenting everything he could through writing. This became the basis for his book as well as his story of growing up and his journey to become a scientist after life in the army. Ricardo shares that he struggled with depression after his deployment. He recalls the difficulty of finding jobs even as a college graduate and how a strong mindset overcame it. For Ricardo, his family remains his primary motivation to achieve his dreams. The proceeds of his book go into the production of his audiobook which features controversial conversations during the Afghanistan war. James Eagleman is a 26 year Army Sniper and Instructor. He was selected as the Honor Graduate of the U.S. Army Sniper School and U.S. Army Special Operations Target Interdiction Course (SOTIC). James was a Master Instructor for the US Army teaching ITC. He has the distinct ability to take the most difficult Ballistic subject and teach it in a manner that anyone can understand and apply. Because of his unique training abilities he is recognized by many as one of the best long-range instructors in the civilian world today, and is also the former Director of Shooting Instruction for Gunwerks Long-Range University
Ricardo came from the wide open space of south Texas where target shooting and growing up tough were the norms. He joined the Army and soon found himself competing against Army Rangers for a spot as a sniper. Ricardo was a member of the infamous 5th brigade who was struck with high casualty rates and a blemish that forever soiled the unit. 5th brigade has gone down in history for the terrible story of the "Kill Team" that caused an international incident that left host nation relationships strained. Ricardo wrote a book to tell the story of those who served in the 5th honorably. The servicemembers who fought for each other and did great things for the uniform. Ricardo talks about how his time in south Texas shaped his life in and out of the uniform. A chat with Craig Harrison, former British Army sniper and author of 'The Longest Kill'.In The Longest Kill, his unflinching autobiography, Craig catapults us into the heat of the action as he describes his active service in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, and gives heart-stopping accounts of his sniper ops as he fought for his life on the rooftops of Basra and the barren hills of Helmand province. Craig was blown up by an IED in Afghanistan and left battling severe PTSD. After his identity was revealed in the press he also had to cope with Al Qaeda threats against him and his family. Mark Spicer one of the world's best snipers who as a sniper instructor has trained snipers of many of the world's military and paramilitary forces talks to Nataliya about his incredible skill set and how an ability to outthink others is what makes a sniper special. He discusses his journey from the military to the corporate world and how as we become increasingly unaware of our surroundings, focusing on our phones, we are making it much easier for someone to get close to us. Mark Spicer is the CEO of Osprey Group USA and requested by name by the top echelon blue chips in both the private and public sectors. He has over three decades leading Military, Government, and Corporate Training including compliance in cybersecurity and physical security. Hands on experience in antiterrorism and counter terrorism including leading some of the largest task forces in the UK and the US. This is a fascinating insight into a world that is usually very low profile with content that is thought-provoking and informative. KEY TAKEAWAYS Being a sniper is one of the last roles on the battlefield where its man against man My Christian upbringing impacts on how I think I teach people to think like the threat they are facing It's the ability to outthink other people that makes the difference The only real weapon we have is knowledge, if I have more knowledge than you I'm going to win It's the easiest thing to get close to people now because everyone is constantly looking at their phones As long as you have a believable story and tell it with confidence people will believe you I've risked my life all my life, why stop now and I have so much information that I want to give back to the men and women who are still holding the line All the stuff I have spent my life doing is now extremely relevant The media create their own news and people believe it The media is a great tool, you can be in people's houses every night and if you keep telling them something at least half will believe it There is an overall lack of awareness and understanding of human nature Guns are just tools it's all about how you treat them and what you do with them A gun can't hurt you it's the person who picks it up BEST MOMENTS ‘Wherever they are, people are not looking around them' ‘You can get into secure buildings if you watch the routines and have a believable story' ‘A lot of people don't understand the threat of cyber-attack' ‘He educated me on how savage the human race can be' VALUABLE RESOURCES Beehive Household podcast Mark Spicer LinkedIn ABOUT THE HOST Nataliya Lloyd is a finance expert and after 15 years of studying and working in the industry, she changed tack and went with her dream of becoming an entrepreneur and followed her creative call. Duztin Watson’s military career has influenced his leadership style and mindset, but it’s not the only thing that defines him. In our conversation, he was clear to point out that his military experience is just one part of his lifelong journey, which has been characterized by many ups and downs along the way. The series of sales and business development roles he held after reacclimating to civilian life were instrumental to developing the confidence and skills he needed to start and build his own company.Duztin knew that the security industry, which is defined by protecting human life and valuable property, was something that aligned with his interests and core beliefs. In 2012, he launched The RiP Group to provide the type of high-quality, high-touch security and related services that he believed was lacking in the marketplace. From the outset, Duztin has focused on building a team where integrity, accountability, professionalism, safety, and constant training lie at the heart of his company’s culture. If you have any questions or if you’d like to chat, you can reach me at my contact info below. In this week's episode of Change Your POV Podcast I have the pleasure of sitting down with Julian Mather as we discuss changing careers. This is a very scary proposition for many, and something we as Veterans do quite often, but why? Getting out of the military and landing in a specific career field that you spend the rest of your career in is not very common. Many, (myself included) find out through trial and error, that certain career fields don't end up as once thought or as advertised. The question becomes, do you have what it takes to walk away from a career in spite of your better judgment to pursue something different that you have more passion for? Many find themselves on that ledge but never make the leap. Julian Mather had what it took to make that leap of faith on more than one occasion. Check out this episode as he explains how and more importantly, why! It is critical, maintaining an open mind and willingness to Change Your Perspective as you progress through your life. Changing Careers once, twice, or even more may be what you NEED to do, you may not want to, and it will be uncomfortable, but necessary all the same! IN THIS PARTICULAR EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Transitioning from an Army Sniper to a 25-year career in photojournalism as a cameraman, to a children's magician to podcast host…? What? Ya, that's what I thought too so I had to have Julian on the show and I am very glad I did! Be sure to check out everything he has going on and please leave any comments below in the comments section if you resonate with Julian's story, or have a similar one, we would love to hear it! In this episode we brought on special guests from the Army Sniper community, Christopher Roberts and Christopher Rance. Both Roberts and Rance have spent some time not only as Snipers but as instructors at the US Army Sniper School in Fort Benning, GA. At Modern Day Sniper, we want to ensure the term "Modern Day Sniper" doesn't just revolve around what "Caylen and Phil" are up to, but to ensure all of our audience understands that being a Modern Day Sniper is a mindset that we are always learning and always evolving to be as proficient as we can in how we employ our long range precision rifle system, regardless of application. Obviously, for military snipers, it's the development on how to be as proficient and lethal on the battlefield as we can be. For the longest time we've wanted our Army counter-parts to talk about their community and some of the differences of being employed as a Sniper in the Army versus as a Marine Scout Sniper. We've decided we wanted to make this a series, to ensure those that are listening are getting the full understanding of the Army side of the house, from their pipeline, to how their employed, their weapon systems and what are some curriculum differences between their program and the Marine Scout Sniper program. We hope you enjoy this series and please let us know if you have any questions about the Army Sniper program in the comments for the next podcast for us to answer.Don't forget to grab your free pass to the Modern Day Rifleman Virtual Summit. Those interviews will be live from Sept 28 thru Oct 2. But if you want all those interviews immediately and for a life time access, we recommend checking out upgrading to the All Access pass. My guest today is a guy that I am absolutely blessed to call my friend and someone you have heard me speak about many times before on the podcast, Matt Roberson. Matt is a field pastor with Revelation Outdoors, he is an ex-Army Sniper who served two tours in Iraq, came home to be a sheriff’s deputy with the Cross County Sheriff’s Department then joined the Arkansas Highway Patrol. Matt and I connected several years ago when I messaged him about possibly coming up and filming a speckled belly goose hunt. What grabbed my attention was how open and intentional Matt was about his faith and how he uses goose hunting to share the gospel. I didn’t know then, that that weekend spent with Matt on his farm outside of Wynne AR would be the start of way more than a friendship. Matt has been a spiritual grounding rod for me, when I need to talk to someone or need some guidance… whatever it is, Matt doesn’t always tell me what I want to hear, but everything he tells me is firmly based on our common faith and convictions and what we both know is biblical truth. He is a speckled belly goose fanatic and has a drive to figure out what birds are doing and thinking like no one else I have every hunted with. He is the chairman of the L’Anguille River Christian Waterfowler’s Association and one of the funniest guys I know. Believe me I spent 4 days in a truck roundtrip to and from Canada with him and at several points had to beg him to stop because my face hurt from laughing so hard. Today we talk about Matt’s time in the army and how his two tours in Iraq helped shape and define his own personal faith in Christ. We talk about our trip to Canada and tell of few stories from that trip and just have a good time catching up. I said before that he is ADD about two things: Jesus and Speckled Belly geese
Situational Awareness...The Most Important Tool One of the most important habits for people to work on is their ability to be aware of surroundings at all times. Whether at work, driving your car or simply relaxing at home, staying cognitive of your outside environment can be a key to success and even a matter of survival. The term used to describe this phenomenon is situational awareness. Depending on the application situational awareness is definable in many ways. In this episode of Trigger Discipline we’re discussing situational awareness and how it applies to concealed firearm carriers. To help us explain situational awareness in more depth, we’ve brought Jonathan Terry a certified NRA and CCW instructor on as a guest. John Terry is an Army qualified Ranger and Army Sniper with numerous other qualifications, deployed to Iraq between 2005 and 2007 and Afghanistan from 2010 to 2011. He’s performed numerous protective details, body guard and sensitive site security detail work both abroad and stateside. Currently he works as a part time instructor at 88 Tactical Range and Readiness Center. Here he teaches self-defense, handgun and carbine classes each with different level of complexity. He also teaches the Nebraska State approved CCW class. When not teaching, he’s performing private in home and corporate safety and security assessments. He also works to develop safety and security policies and is involved in personal high risk mitigation consulting. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode: How do you define situational awareness? Why is situational awareness important in your everyday life? Is situational awareness inherited or can it be learned? How to hone your situational awareness skills? How to combat stigma related to situational awareness? How to maintain situational awareness in today’s world of over stimulation and complacency? What are Cooper’s Levels of Awareness? Is it okay to relax and how you can decompress? Is profiling okay? Why is planning important? When I think of an army sniper, I usually think of Bob Lee Swagger, tough, gritty, All-American and not giving a crap. But I was surprised when I spoke with guest that he not only was a sniper, but a lawyer, professor, writer and app developer. Ryan Cleckner is an US Army Ranger Sniper and served two combat deployments in Afghanistan. Once he left the Army, Ryan took a different route and went to law school. Along the way he also worked for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and Remington Outdoor Company. Ryan also started teaching Constitutional Law at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Ryan is an author who not only writes articles online but he published two books: The Long Range Shooting Handbook and There’s Only One You, which is a gun safety book for children. Both are very successful. Finally, Ryan has a significant online presence with his Mayday Safety app which is meant to get your list of people to know when your in trouble and Rocket FFL, which is an online training course to get your Federal Firearms License. Joining the military had been a lifelong dream for Nick Irving. He even knew from a young age that he wanted to be a sniper, taking BB gun shots at just about every inanimate object in his neighborhood, using his homemade ghillie suit as camouflage. And like many who know they want to be a part of the best the military has to offer, Nick set out in high school to join the elite Special Operations Forces of the U.S. military. Through hard work, preparation, and perseverance he became a sniper with the Army's 75th Ranger Regiment, where he completed 6 combat deployments to both Iraq and Afghanistan. While with the 75th he also set a single deployment record with 33 kills in a 3-1/2 month timeframe, earning him the sobriquet, "The Reaper." Nick takes us through the mind of a sniper, on and off the battlefield, and what it was like to come home as The Reaper, in this captivating conversation. www.reaper33.com | "The Reaper" | "Way of the Reaper"
It is safe to call former Army Ranger sniper Nick Irving a very busy man. He in fact has another book hitting shelves next year co-authored by former Army General and fiction writer A.J. Tata who's joined us before on SOFREP Radio. "Reaper: Ghost Target" is set to be the first in a series of sniper novels based around protagonist Vick Harwood who may (or my not) be based around a certain sniper you're all familiar with. Nick also tells us the future of The Reaper TV series we first heard about a couple of years back, and last year learned would be produced by Jay-Z. You will not want to miss this exclusive announcement he shares with our audience. Nick also dives into sniper mentality, Ranger stories, and putting the past away to start anew. We also cover some hard-hitting stories in the spec ops world including the killing of Green Beret Staff Sgt. Logan J. Melgar allegedly by two suspected members of SEAL Team 6, as well as the story of Astafa al-Imam, one of the alleged perpetrators of the attack on the Benghazi consulate being captured by U.S. special operations forces and FBI agents in Libya. Wrapping things up, we give a Jack Murphy approved Throat Punch of the Week. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
