Riding Shotgun With Charlie #180 The DCP Gals & GOAL    On August 27, Gun Owners Action League hosted an event called The 2A Freedom Celebration. They pulled in some names you've seen on RSWC. Amanda Suffecool (#009), Holly Sullivan (#036), Jared Yanis (#051). And some locals like Toby Leary, (#143) Kerrie Ann Auclair (#139). We were able to film a show with a few of the local DCP gals, Moe Palmer & Bonnie Marshall. Mike Harris, Director of Public Policy, also joined us. Yeah… it was a car full of teal shirts!   There were several folks that sent some love GOAL's way. Todd Eccles from Patriot Defense Podcast, Nikki Goeser, Michael Sodini, David Coy, Klint Macro, John Petrolino, and the closing video was Cam Edwards. Of course Jim Wallace spoke, Jon Green (#030 & #034), Mike & Angi gave away a couple rifles. And Garet & Jeff from the GOAL Podcast (#177) were there as well. It was really a great time. Lots of fun catching up with everyone. I've said for a long time, these kinds of events are family get-togethers.    We gave everyone the hot shotgun seat for today's show. Starting with Kerrie Ann, she doesn't get into Boston often so she was excited to see so much. We talked about the Gun Law Listening Tour and how it turned into HD.4420. But she talked about going to one of the stops and speaking with a woman who said she knew she would be dead if she tried to use a gun against her domestic abuser. Kerrie Ann helped her re-think if she had a gun and some training, the gun could have been an equalizer.    Mike Harris talked about his time working in the State House in Boston and learning the ropes there. But he also acted as a tour guide. He does know a bit of Boston history and how to get around BeanTown.    Holly Sullivan took the next spotlight. She brought up that the GOAL event is the kind of event where the states need to get together and have a conversation about what is working and what isn't. This is one of the things she really wants to work on and connect state groups so we can be just as organized as the antis.    Bonnie Marshall has only been shooting for a few years. She's become a Range Safety Officer and started helping Kerrie Ann with her other group, The Well Armed Woman. It was great to have Bonnie break out of her shell and join us for the fun adventure.    Moe Palmer is also a local Quincy MA gal. She's also an RSO working with some local instructors to run the shooting line at live fire courses. Moe reached out to me a few years ago.  We took a road trip to SIG Academy in 2022 when they opened. She's also a regular on the Patriot Defense Podcast with Todd Eccles.    And our closer is Amanda Suffecool. DC Project Advisor. NRA BOD member. Host of Eye On The Target Radio. Instructor. And my conscience. Amanda was great at the event. She talked about how GOAL is winning even though it feels like we may not be all the time. She had a busy week. She was in Nashville on Monday with the DCP. She met with Shelley Hill from The Complete Combatant in Georgia. Then she headed to Boston for the weekend. The following week, she headed to Dallas for NRA BOD meetings.    We stopped for selfies, got sidetracked, and saw some sights in Boston. Like Cheers, The Granary Burial Ground, The Old State House & where the Boston Massacre started. Kenmore Square and drove next to Fenway Park, followed by going down Boylston Street, where the Marathon bombings happened and finally up Newbury Street.    Yeah…it was an undertaking editing this beast with 6 cameras all together. Some of the batteries ran out, but we did the best we could. This is a long show, the longest I've done. But I wanted everyone to get some time Riding Shotgun.    Favorite quotes:  Kerrie Ann: “If you had a gun it creates an equalizer for someone that's 5'1”.” Mike: “The unintended consequences of that (covid) a lot of people were more activated so it's easier to get people focused on this bill (HD.4420)” Holly: “In such tiny states in New England, non-resident permits make life accessible.”  Bonnie: “It's a bunch of like minded people, really fun.” Moe: “I didn't know there was a community out there. I didn't realize it was a passion.” Amanda: “It's great when your life comes together and you have a mission that will make a difference and leave a legacy.”   The DC Project https://www.dcproject.info/   Gun Owners Action League https://goal.org/   Connecticut Citizens Defense League https://www.ccdl.us/   Eye On The Target Radio https://eyeonthetargetradio.com/   Sisters In Arms- A Firearms Story https://www.youtube.com/@SIA-AFirearmStory   Armed Women of America https://armedwomen.org/ Second Amendment Foundation https://secure.anedot.com/saf/donate?sc=RidingShotgun   Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/   Buy a Powertac Flashlight, use RSWC as the discount code and save 15% www.powertac.com/RSWC

Walk the Talk America is a 401(c)(3) organization that is attempting and currently succeeding in bridging the gap between the fields of mental health and firearms ownership. WTTA provides both mental healthcare professionals, and firearms owners with the resources they need and works closely with large corporations like Zephyr Wellness and Mental Health America to connect those in need with gun-neutral mental health advice. WTTA also offers free, anonymous mental health screenings online that should help those curious to see if they might need further resources. Walk The Talk America believes that improving the quality and availability of mental health resources to gun owners can reduce suicide by firearm. About two-thirds of gun deaths each year are suicides. It's an incredible challenge facing the gun-owning community. It's also one they've begun organizing to address. One person leading that effort is Michael Sodini of Walk The Talk America. He joins the show this week to discuss how the industry and gun owners alike have partnered with mental health professionals to try and reduce the number of gun suicides each year. Sodini said explained the way the program came about and how it fills an important gap. When he first attempted to use the resources of his gun distribution company to fund a mental health intervention program for gun owners, he found there was nothing in place. So, he helped form Walk The Talk America to develop a program by gun owners and for gun owners. He said destigmatizing seeking mental health resources is an important way to help gun owners struggling with suicidal ideation. One key part of doing that is ensuring people that they can reach out for help without having to worry about losing their firearms. Often that's one key reason gun owners are hesitant. That's why Walk The Talk America works directly with mental health professionals to help them better understand how to reach out to gun owners without alienating them. They have also started a network of approved providers who have experience working with gun owners. They've begun connecting those in crisis with those trained and able to help. Sodini said the issue is one that the community needs to take seriously and do more to address. He lost a friend to gun suicide and knows exactly how devastating it can be. I, unfortunately, can say the same. The more gun owners can do to look out for each other, the fewer we will lose to suicide. That's the key takeaway, according to Sodini. Plus, Contributing Writer Jake Fogelman and I discuss how a new California gun law is dashing the dreams of a young female Olympic hopeful. And we talk a bit about my girlfriend's search for a concealed carry gun and Jake's own carry gun update. Special Guest: Michael Sodini.

She was nice enough to offer me some cookies and milk.    John, often known as Crump, or even Crumpy, has lots of things going on. He tells us that he grew up in a house full of Democrats and he was the only Constitutionalist in the family. So he's been consistent throughout. Once he gets into something, he's ALL in.  When he got into firearms, he ended up starting one gun store and buying another just to have the inventory. He submitted something to Ammoland and it was published.  The next week, he sent another article to them and that was published.  Then a third the next week. Eventually, Ammoland just said John should write for them.    He's got his hand in some other content, too.  He's got a daily YouTube channel, John Crump Live.  There's a variety of guests and topics, covering just about anything that is firearm or freedom related. Then there's John Crump News. Like the title says, it's where he puts out news of what's going on. He's also helping other content creators, too.  Folks like DLD After Dark, Flying Rich, Trench Work Chronicles, Shooting Gallery New England (RSWC #106), and 2A EDU.  Plus he creates t-shirts and patches.  All of this is under the Black Swan Media brand.  There's a story behind Black Swan Media that he shares with us.  One of the things that keeps John going is being an insomniac and not sleeping much.    John also tells us a bit about buying firearms in Virginia.  He also talks about his connection to Gun Owners of America (GOA) and their involvement with Virginia Citizens Defense League. I was a little surprised that an 18 year old can buy a handgun and carry it openly. Much of northern Virginia is ‘occupied territory' and the rest of Virginia is ‘free America' as I often call regions like these.    With all of the interviews he's done, he did a compilation of sorts.  He took some transcripts of the best interviews and turned it into a book called Speaking With Giants. Some of the interviewees are RSWC passengers! Stephen Willeford (#088), Anthony Colandro (#003 & 025), Sarah Joy Albrecht (#092), Rhonda Ezell (#037), Michael Sodini (# 067).  But there's others, too. Willes Lee, Maj Toure, Tim Kennedy, and more. The proceeds from the book went to help John's sick niece. The proceeds still get donated.    John also gets into telling us about his favorite guest, Tony Simon (#041).  He said the conversation went from “Karens” to how we got to socialism and it only took 4 hours!    John had some great quotes, which you'll find below. I really enjoyed him talking about learning about yourself when you interview someone.  And how the interviewee also learns something about themselves when they're guests on a show. I learn something from all of my passengers and I think its a good thing about taking folks Riding Shotgun.    Favorite quotes: “I believe we should live within the Constitution and everything else is infringement.” “When I go to sleep, I'm writing in my head. So when I wake up, I have an article usually pre-written in my head.” “You learn a little bit about yourself when you talk to someone.” “Life isn't easy because it's not meant to be easy. Anything that's worth something is hard.”   Timestamp 00:00 Intro 01:20 John Crump 01:45 Beginnings 02:21 Constitutionalist & growing up 05:03 Engineering of firearms 06:19 VA info & GOA 09:35 Buying gun stores 10:18 Journalism & writing 12:08 Black Swan Media 15:53 Internet traffic 16:41 T shirts 18:50 Staying on top of things 25:14 Speaking with Giants book 29:49 Favorite Guests 34:04 GOA/VCDL Connection 39:40 Europe 41:58 Wrap up Black Swan Media on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Johncrumplive   John Crump News YouTube https://www.youtube.com/johncrumpnews   John Crump Live YouTube https://www.youtube.com/johncrumplive   Ammoland-John Crump https://www.ammoland.com/author/johncrump/   Crumpy Website http://crumpy.com/   Speaking With Giants https://www.amazon.com/Speaking-Giants-Interviews-John-Crump/dp/B08CP9DJL6   Gun Owners of America https://www.gunowners.org/   Virginia Citizens Defense League https://vcdl.org/ Second Amendment Foundation http://saf.org/   Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms https://www.ccrkba.org/     Please support the Riding Shotgun With Charlie sponsors and supporters.    Buy RSWC & GunGram shirts & hoodies, stickers & patches, and mugs at the store! http://ridingshotgunwithcharlie.com/rswc-shop/   Keyhole Holsters  Veteran Owned, American Made http://www.keyholeholsters.com/   Dennis McCurdy Author, Speaker, Firewalker http://www.find-away.com/   Self Defense Radio Network http://sdrn.us/

At Aquarian Anarchy, you know we are all about solutions and bringing you important voices to offer a perspective you may not have considered. This week's guest is no exception. Michael Sodini is the founder and president of “Walk the Talk America,” an organization designed to bring the two a community together with the mental health community to remove the stigma associated with seeking treatment for trauma and other mental health issues. All too often, firearms owners were foregoing mental health services for fear of losing their firearm rights, while many mental health practitioners lacked the training to properly serve members of the 2A Community. In July 2018, Michael founded Walk the Talk America to address the issue head-on. Trigger warning: discussion on firearms, suicide, and violence. As the discussion around firearm ownership and accessibility becomes more and more heated in America, the conversation around mental health can be overshadowed. Politics and passion aside; focusing on having accessible mental health care without judgment for everyone (including those who own firearms) is critical. We recorded this episode a few months ago, however, I did not publish it when I planned due to multiple suicides by firearm deaths that happened in our community at the time. I felt the timing was not appropriate at that moment with these incidents still fresh. The more I held on to release, the more incidents kept happening around the country. I realized there would never be a "right" time to talk about it. The right time is now. In this episode, I talk to Jake Wiskerchen, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Zephyr Wellness, and Michael Sodini, Founder of the non-profit Walk the Talk America. They have partnered to make mental health resources more accessible to firearm owners, as well as delivering training to mental health professionals to be more culturally competent when treating people in crisis who own firearms (are afraid of the ramifications of disclosing that information). It was an eye-opening conversation and I learned so much more about the importance of treating the source of the problem and not just the symptom.   Depending on what side of the debate you’re on, the total number of people killed by firearms each year in the US is between 30,000 and 40,000 people with about half being suicides.  When it comes to these deaths, the anti-gun crowd is always too quick to blame firearms and the pro-gun crowd is always quick to blame mental health.  If we want to get more people on the pro-firearm side, we can’t simply brush aside these deaths as mental health problems and move one.  To help discuss how we can do this appropriately, we’ve invited Michael Sodini with Walk the Talk America on the show. Topics and Questions Addressed in this Episode   How Walk the Talk America began How the self-diagnostic tools on their website were developed and can be utilized. Is there a way to effectively distinguish between people who need help and those who don’t? What are some of the stigmas that their organization fights regarding both mental health and firearms? How can a person restrict access to a firearms, without nullifying their ability to quick access? With COVID 19 still prevalent and the uncertainty on when a vaccine will be available paired with the social divide caused by the protesting , rioting and looting across the Nation, our mental health is being stressed to the max. These two non-profit organizations exist to help both our citizens and our Nation's protectors understand and manage good mental health stability and get people the help they need. Walk The Talk America: (WTTA) Our goal is to raise awareness and create a change in the misunderstandings in regard to mental illness and firearms by bringing together industry leaders to reduce gun violence, negligence, suicide and the trauma created by these events. Develop programs for suicide prevention, firearms negligence, trauma mitigation, and child safety. Sheep Dog Impact Assistance: (SDIA) exists to engage, assist and empower our nation’s “Sheep Dogs” (Veterans, Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue, and EMS personnel) to #GetOffTheCouch and reengage in living an active, meaningful and productive life with a renewed sense of purpose. The US Department of Veterans Affairs states that more than 6,000 veterans die by suicide each year, and other statistics show that twice as many First Responders die by suicide than in the line of duty. Post-traumatic stress, injuries, depression, addiction, and isolation plague our Sheep Dogs to the point of thinking about and/or attempting suicide. By gathering together Sheep Dogs who have suffered similar traumas and experiences for an opportunity to continue serving, we strive to prevent suicides in our Veteran and First Responder communities.

We are doing a series called Ameri-CAN. Talking about the CAN-DO spirit that is part of our American DNA. So much about our lives has been turned upside down by this Corona Virus / Covid-19, and we have been hearing a lot about what we CAN’T do and where we CAN’T go, but our guests during this series are going to talk to us about their area of expertise and all of the ways we still CAN learn and grow, train, connect, and expand our freedoms in ways we maybe haven’t thought about before. Our guests today are Michael Sodini, Founder of Walk The Talk America and Jake Wiskerchen, the co-founder, co-owner, and chief clinical officer at Zephyr Wellness, a mental health outpatient practice in northern Nevada. During this time fear, loss and having our daily routines restricted one thing we don’t hear enough about is how all of that impacts us emotionally. 1) Jake, talk to us, from a mental health professional’s perspective, what are you seeing people struggle with and how are you offering them help? 2) Michael, when you started WTTA, no one could have imagined HOW important it would be to have your organization up and running. At WTTA you have some free and anonymous tools available – what are those and how do people accss them? 3) Jake, you are also helping to train the helpers. You and I met at an event in Reno, NV where you were part of bridging the communication and culture gap between Mental Health Professionals and clients who might be gun owners. And now there are literally millions more first-time gun owners, so the timing could not have been more important. How is that bridge-building going? 4) Mike, WTTA is a not-for-profit organization – for people who have a heart to help continue and further the work you are doing, how can they donate? 5) How do people find and follow you both and the work you do?

Riding Shotgun With Charlie #067 Michael Sondini Walk The Talk America   You never know what is going to happen or who you’re going to meet at the Gun Rights Policy Conference.  This year, Kerry Slone from We The Female (RSWC #55) approached me and said “You HAVE to have Michael Sodini from WTTA!”  An exchange of info and a few text messages and it’s a done deal.    Michael Sodini had family that worked in the gun industry for 3 generations as an importer.  He says he’s “the most un-gun gun guy” but really enjoyed the people in the industry. After getting a DUI, one of his colleagues thought that he would never be able to work in the firearm industry. Sadly, his friend took his own life thinking there was nothing else for him to do.    Michael eventually founded Walk The Talk America (WTTA).  WTTA focuses on the mental health issues and suicide prevention in the firearm community. It started over a conversation with a woman in New Orleans who asked about what happens when there’s a school shooting.  They agreed that one side blames the guns, while the other blames mental health. And they decided that there has to be a way for both sides to work together for a common solution.    Knowing that there are good people in the firearm community who do care when there are mass and school shootings, he set out to do more research about people who struggle with mental health.  He came across Mental Health America and their Proposition Statement 72: Violence: Community Mental Health Response (see link for the article) and discovered that only 5% of people who suffer with mental health commit acts of violence.    WTTA is working to take the stigma away from having mental health issues and owning a firearm. Their website offers a screening quiz to see if you’re experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition. The link is here.  https://walkthetalkamerica.org/love//  Looking at the website, there are several types of tests that you can take. He shares that some of his own family members did a screening and ended up realizing that they have some concerns that can easily be dealt with.   Michael says that mental health education is just as important as physical education. And we should have courses in school about this topic.  We know that it’s easy to see if we need some physical exercise to help ourselves. But we can’t see when someone needs with mental health issues.    We have a great conversation about the mental health issues and owning a firearm and that struggling with depression, PTSD, and anxiety, should not be a permanent disqualifier for owning a firearm. Whether you help build a house, or provide library books or a school to children, or help fund research for a disease, the world is becoming a slightly better place with each donation. As you become generous, you feel powerful and walk taller. You see the world in a more positive light. As you notice the plight of others, your perspective shifts and you don't look upon your own problems as much. The little things can be ignored, because you realize how little they truly are. Eagle Imports is the importer of brands such as Bersa, MAC, and Llama. They are one of the biggest gun companies in the world, but Mike is the "ungun gun guy." He grew up in the liberal haven of San Francisco before moving to New York for his modeling career. He met his model ex-wife and the mother of his children while traveling the world, but he needed a change which led Mike into guns. A chance meeting in a restaurant years later and coming across a proposition paper by Mental Health America inspired him to try to combat the stigma of mental health and help those who need help the most. He founded "Walk the Talk America" (wtta.org) to accomplish this mission. Being a sufferer of anxiety makes this topic very near and dear to my heart. I had to have him on the podcast. This topic isn't always an easy topic to deal with, but one that is necessary to confront.  Please Visit: https://www.wtta.org for more information and take their free screening at https://walkthetalkamerica.org/love/
